I used to go here all the time and always got the creamy crab as well as the pitchers. Workers are always very friendly and usually everything comes out great. However, I went there again last Saturday after a long break due to covid to get a sandwich. I came back home with a creamy crab 14" and had to throw it all away (that's $15 I won't ever get back). The imitation crab that they had used was rotten, the sandwich was sour and acidic, almost like a burnt taste. I took a couple bites of my sandwich and realized it was the crab - it also had a very mushy texture after opening up the sandwich. I felt nauseas for the rest of the night and I'm sad that quality control has gone down as this used to be my go to place before the bars. Edit: It really shows a lot about a business when the owner reaches out to you. He has insured me a full investigation will go on to see what could've been the cause. He has also tried to make this right, so I have updated my review as this is just a one off from all my previous visits with very attentive management! Half fast I think is completely hit or miss. There is a good chance that your bun will get soggy if you don't eat it quick, so it's better to gobble it down ASAP. I've tried the buff chick and the chicken caesar subs and they made me feel really disgusting afterwards. Also they were pretty slimey. Just tried the pizza steak and loved it, but it still made me feel really gross afterwards. Man, I love me a good sub & this place has like over 100 to choose from! I usually get The Godfather 2 (II), it's like a loaded Italian. Top shelf ingredients of only the freshest caliber. It's a bit pricey for a sub ($13 average for the large) but it's a 14-incher so that some what makes up for it. 2 or 3 people can eat from one. Now as a young professional I still manage to find myself back there during lunch breaks. After years away from Boulder, I finally revisited (twice) within the last month. I have ordered the BBQ veggie and Portabella Boomer. The BBQ veggie had a lot more sauce than I was hoping for but the flavor was still very savory and had a hint of spiciness. The Portabella Boomer definitely knocked it out of the park. Not only do they offer some delicious and savory sandwiches that are made to order - but they even sell "Strong" Islands! This is a great place to come with a group of people to enjoy some sandwiches and have a drink. Disclaimer: you may not need more than one! One of our favorite Boulder places. The outside clock is set to 4:20, haha! Plus they are open really late, so it's a great midnight snack. They will card you at the door though because the patio is almost always full of college kids drinking. The food is always on point here. They toast the bread, but not everything in the sandwich, so the bread is crunchy but the lettuce and tomato are chilled. I almost always get a seafood selection. The creamy crab has bacon in it with imitation crab mixture. Oh so good. The section is outrageous, and the menu wraps over 2 walls. The Italian subs and even veggie sandwich are also amazing. I also remember the menu being huge and looking specifically for the word "fried" I found it and saw heaven. Standing room only (I think) and super crowded with some of the most incredible people watching I've seen in a while. So, more than a few of my roots to back to Boulder, CO. My parents grew up there. My grandparents all lived there and my great grandparents lived in or around Boulder. My grandpa (on dad's side) was probably the toughest guy I knew. Not a tall man; or a big one. But fit and wiry and tough as nails. He rode the rails as a young man, living a rough and tumble life and worked on the roads in Rocky Mountain National Park. Finally, he met the love of his life and settled back down in Boulder, working for forty-odd years at the Dugout Cleaners (now Boulder Cleaners). I would go visit him on 13th Street when I was a little kid and the smell of a dry cleaners reminds me of him to this day. My dad tells the story of me trying to help out and grabbing a bag of laundry just like my grandpa--swinging it over my shoulder and the weight of the thing pitched me right over on my five-year-old ass. Long story, short: Half Fast Subs is located in the same building that was once home to the Dugout. I sure miss my grandpa. And visiting him at the Dugout. But Half Fast is, I guess, the next best thing. If grandpa were still here. And if we were eating at Half Fast, he wouldn't say a word. He'd just eat. And that would be his highest compliment. If you can't find something you like here, you're just too picky. I've never taken the time to count, but they probably have 50 different sandwiches to choose from (with three different types of bread!). It's a good thing the line is usually pretty long, because you need that much time to decide what to get! I've only tried about 5 different sandwiches. Once I find something I like, I find it hard to order anything else. My favorites are the Buff Chick with grilled chicken and the Thai sub. My wife has eaten their salads. I love Half Fast. I would love even more if the service wasn't twice as slow as normal restaurants. Also I would love it if they kept the same bread they used to use a couple of years ago. They have THE BIGGEST MENU sandwich-wise and I'm making it a goal to try as many different ones as I can. They have also added salads to the menu and are very vegetarian friendly. If you get a veggie sub, I highly recommend the Portabello Boomer. Don't get the Italian sub if you're expecting a normal one with pepperoni, salami, etc. because you'll get a couple of slabs of what looks like sausage patties in marinara sauce. Usually the sandwiches here are pretty good, and they're definitely always creative. I mean, the menu takes up the entire back wall! There must be a hundred subs to choose from. So if you're super picky and nothing at any other restaurant looks good to you, walk into Half Fast and pick away to your heart's content. If what you want is a ham and shrimp sandwich with cucmbers and cheddar cheese and bean sprouts, I'm sure you'll find an approximation. If you don't see anything at all that you want on this menu, then congratulations, you're probably pregnant. Non-pregnant cravings just don't get that specific. However, if you're a little less picky and can cede a little control to a sub place with a, I don't know, a theme, like just being American or Italian or something, I'd go elsewhere (my recommendation: Salvaggio's, right down the street). I just don't think it's possible for a place to have this huge of a menu and have all of it be good. I've had fatty, tangled cuts of meat buried in there many a time, or have it be missing cheese. Yes, when this place hits a homer, it hits a homer. I'll admit that. That Thanksgivingy one... with turkey and mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce... always hits the spot, as does that Thai one with chicken and crunchy noodles. Service was friendly, even though I was absolutely out of place here, being well over 40 yrs. old, and not drinking the margaritas in the cute mini-pitchers like almost everyone else out on the patio on a warm breezy weeknight on the hill. If you have someone who is a picky eater this is the place for you. There isn't one thing on their massive menu that couldn't suit someone's picky pallet. My bf is very very picky and of course there was something on the menu for him. We both got the traditional philly cheese steak sandwich. The meat was juicy and was chopped perfectly. The green peppers and onions were cooked to perfection. Only a little bit of oil dripped from the sandwich as it was not soggy at all. The best part of this establishment is that you can choose steak or chicken. I will def try the chicken next time. Even better is that you can choose which bread you want. I went with the traditional French as my bf went with wheat and he loved it more than any other philly he has ever tried. Great quick service as the food is brought out to you. I heard good things about Half Fast and finally agreed to a CU friend of mine taking me there. The menu was fantastic! Any sandwich you can imagine is already on the menu there. Ordering was a lot of fun! The food, however, was another story. I found it to be quite tasteless. It makes me sad to say this, but I wouldn't go again. The bread bordered on stale, there was little meat and the avocado on my turkey, bacon, avocado was mushy and brown. It took seriously liberal amounts of salt to make it decent. If you want great sandwiches on fresh baked bread, Jimmy's Sub Shack is the best option in Boulder. The menu is smaller but the owners are on premises to make sure you really enjoy their food. If you're a poor college student, Half Fast may be the option for you. Those days are long over for me and I prefer better quality over insane quantity. I think I'll stick to Jimmy's. read more

Wow! Amazing customer service! We ordered subs for the CU girls Lacrosse tailgate party. The customer service was amazing - the gentleman who took the order was very patient and nice. Having the party subs delivered to the field was no problem for them - they were happy to do it. We even called 45 minutes before the delivery to add on - and the shop could not have been more accommodating. The delivery driver was very kind and actually set up the subs with the signs, identifying the different subs. To me these guys went above and beyond! The subs were delicious, prepared as requested, (sauce on the side) and the bread was amazing. If up in Boulder and it calls for subs; this will be the place to go! read more

I just went to this place tonight after a production meeting of sorts at CU. First of all, the number of sandwiches they have is insane. I spent 10 minutes reading the whole set of boards they had up that displayed them all. They have everything you can think of, hot and cold, meaty and vegetarian. They also have a good selection of beers, including 3 New Belgium beers on tap and even more bottled. I went with an Easy Street Wheat (good stuff) and a 7" Philly Cheese. They use an interesting system that uses playing cards to identify your order. A cool idea, but it doesn't work all that well, and they seemed to be wandering around trying to find the tables, as there was no stand or anything for the cards. Overall though, good experience. The sandwich was delicious and cost a reasonable price, the beer selection was good (also reasonably priced), and the atmosphere of the place is fun. If I'm back in the CU area looking for somewhere to eat I'll definitely go back. read more

Dude. So like, check it out brah: Me and my best buddy were like totally chillin on the hill O.C. style when my buddy says to me "yo homey we should totally bust a gnarly munch right now..." Ok, enough of that crap. Just wanted to set the appropriate mood for giving a review of a restaurant on "The Hill" (aka: californiado). This is one of my favorite sandwhich shops, even if you have to fight through crowds of intellectually void california rich kids to get to it. The reasons I like it so much are simple: 1. Selection. LOTS of options here. 2. Price. One of the few places in Boulder that is actually affordable, that is if you're not on mommy and daddy's bankroll and you have to work for your own dinner. 3. Taste. So I haven't tried everything on the menu, but what I have had is muy bien. What else do you need? Well maybe a way to filter out the a fore mentioned plague on society; but if you could free Boulder from California it might actually make the whole town more appealing. read more
