No joke. * "dive bar" as in the tiki theme isnt curated by a designer. It's real of it's era * the bartender is the owner. If you're not a regular he's friendly enough but don't expect him to chat you up 2- food Nope. Don't expect any 3- drinks The pours are generous. The Mai tai mix is from a bottle but- guess what. It's good. What I loved best was , no new glass for another drink. Just some more ice and another mix. This is old school 4- hours Beats me. Prices were good and the decor is "tiki", but otherwise this is simply a neighborhood dive bar. Mai Tai was good, but unless you want a 4 person scorpion, no other tropical drinks are served. We wanted to try some variety for when friends visit for a tiki bar run. As stated by others, the place reeks of smoke. That is legal (I believe) since the owner/operator does not have employees, but improve the ventilation at least. Bartender was not friendly to potential new customers, just kind of stood there. Do not go there for specialty beers, this is a Bud/Miller place. Glad we went once after many years of seeing the place, but no need to return. read more

Hale Hawaii is definitely not closed. I just went today and it's as amazing as it has always been. Ronny, the owner, was actually saying that business has been bad since the pandemic. Stop by and grab a drink at this historic torrance gem that had been around since the 60's! Open from 4pm to 9pm Monday through Friday. Mai tai's and scorpion bowls are awesome. read more

This is a no-nonsense, nice neighborhood bar with strong maitai's. It's not a commercialized tiki bar but rather a real old fashioned local bar that makes you feel like you're in Hawaii. Friendly but not over talkative bartender. He has a group of regulars that stop by for a couple drinks before heading home. They allow outside food which is a plus since The Loft is just steps away. if you don't smoke or don't like the smell of ciggs, don't come here and don't talk crap! simple! some people like a cigarette or cigar while talking to their buddies. I don't smoke, usually, but once in a blue moon i like to enjoy a cigg. Anyways, i like the smell of smoke its soothing to me. If you come here, you HAVE to get the "Scorpion!" its the best mixed drink that comes in a shell with about 2 refills! Its so delicious and definitely kicks you in the ass. Ron is the owner and only employee so he's super chill. this is like his hobby. So he can give a rats ass if you wanted some 2012-modern bar. I have been trying to go to this place forever - as I love tiki bars. My boyfriend and I have driven by on 6 different evenings and finally it was open last night! (I can not figure out any rhyme or reason as to when they are open but you might want to try a Friday night) This isn't really a tiki bar, as they only serve two drinks that I would consider tiki bar drinks. You can get the Scorpion bowl or a Mai Tai. We opted for the Mai Tai as there was only two of us and no way could we finish an entire Scorpion bowl. My Mai Tai was pretty good but my boyfriends was almost entirely alcohol. Strong but not very tasty. Everyone else in the bar seemed to know each other and were drinking beers. Looked to all be locals. The ambiance was very lacking. Part of the bar was obviously junk storage and had old items stored in it. It looked like a bar that someone had just put tiki decorations up in. The only plus was that the drinks were only $6 each. read more

I am a big fan of tiki bars, and this is a solid one. You sort of feel like you are stepping back into a crusty 1960's tiki bar. Just look at that sign they have posted above the front door in the Yelp photos -- time warp, baby! The interior decor is well done. It is not quite as ornate as some other tiki bars, such as the Tiki Ti, but the owner has done a great job decorating. Only 4 stars because the drinks were not that amazing. I went with a Singapore Sling and my friend had a Mai Tai. Both were too sweet and syrupy, too much mixer I guess. And the hours are funky. You have to pretty much get lucky to find the place open, and they close on the early side. But it is a great experience, the owner is a very cool salty dude from the Islands. Just treat him with respect, because he doesn't care about you or anyone else and will kick your butt right out. read more

This place was finally open when I was in the area!! The irony being that today is April Fools!!! Monday at 5pm apparently is a time this place may be open for business. It was fairly full when we walked in and seemed to be full of regulars. Just came for one round almost out of obligation due to the many times we've driven by in a year only to find it closed. The owner said they are open M-F but close very early many days. That is about the most specifics he was willing to give. HOPE THIS HELPS those out there hoping to try the place. read more

A tiki bar fanatic, I was amused by the random reports I'd heard over the years of their being sporadically open and how you had to be lucky to get in. Mr. D and I happened by after work and the door was open. It's a smoky place with usual barflies consisting of older guys. Whenever a regular walked in, the bartender was already picking up a glass, loading it with ice, and pouring in the booze as he said hello and they light up a smoke. Many of the liquor bottles were slathered in years of dust. Better to have them and not need them. We parked it next to a stack of glass ashtrays, and ordered up a scorpion bowl, served in a large plastic clam shell. $10 and the excess is included in a metal cup like a milkshake. It's a solid drink. Don't expect a menu to be on hand with whimsical drawings of chi-chis and mai-tais in coconuts with umbrellas and pineapple wedges. It's very much a dive that happens to bend toward tiki. CASH ONLY with an antiquated cash register, not kept for the sake of irony. Women's panties hang from the rafters. Thongs here. G-strings there. It's not quite the Tiki-Ti, but it has much of the same ambiance with loads of tiki artifacts and sports memorabilia lining the bar. The rest of the room is filled with folding chairs beneath an outrigger canoe and a giant, wooden Filipino fork and spoon set. Indeed there are no posted hours. The one sign out front instructs people to leave parcels with Ginger at the passport photo place. read more

It's easy to forget all about Hale Hawaii when you think of Tiki in Los Angeles. That's mainly due to the fact that Hale's is more often then not closed. They subscribe to a really strange set of hours. It's open weeknights from 4 till... well, whenever the hell they want to close up. It's like the other side of town version of Tiki Ti. Especially considering that both establishments are owner operated and so they can legally smoke inside. How this law came about, I have no clue. But still, it does make it so that the bar has that ash tray smell just stuck on to everything. In that sense, it's a pretty decent bar. The decor is where I like it. While some of the place not directly at the bar feels like it's just not as flowing as others, it still does carry out that Polynesian style fairly well. It's also in a strip mall. Which you would think is odd for a bar to be in, but it's one of the last remaining examples of the strip mall tiki bar. This is as deeply rooted into tiki culture as anything else. They do make a pretty mean Mai Tai. And if you're up for the task, they do offer a really kick you in the balls Scorpion bowl. Though you have to remember that you're going to be consuming this drink in front of a lot of beer chugging football fans. It's a nice change from what you're used to in a tiki bar. Especially the newer ones that just opened. This one is far more of a dive than you would have hoped to see. It's got the pro's and cons to it. I can't hate. It's just one of those more forgotten Tiki spots in Los Angeles and deserves some loving. read more

Hale Hawaii is tucked in corner of a dingy strip mall off PCH (between Crenshaw & Hawthorne). I love a good tiki bar, but Hale Hawaii Lounge could constitute its own subclass of a dive tiki bar. There's small tiki god motif at the entrance. The place is dimly lit. There's a bar, a juke box, some scattered folding chairs and tables, and a couple of TVs. It's owner run, so smoking is allowed. The owner is an older gentleman that appears to run this place more like a hobby than a business. He opens at around 4pm and shutdown by 10pm. I ordered a Mai Tai ($6) that was nice, strong and a couple of bucks cheaper than those at Islands, down the street. BEWARE... this is a CASH ONLY establishment, so keep the plastic in your wallet or bra strap. There's an ATM at the liquor store at the opposite end of the mall - I had to walk over there. For my taste, Hale Hawaii Lounge is a solid dive tiki bar. Nothing fancy, unpretentious. A quiet place to enjoy a drink - I hear the scorpion bowl is the specialty. I can see why Hale Hawaii wouldn't appeal to the younger crowd (look at some the other reviews). If you're in your twenties, still in power drinking mode, and require a certain level of trendiness, then best to paddle your board somewhere else. read more

Boyfriend and I came here on Tuesday evening after I had a crap day at work. A friend had told me about the Hale Hawaii and mentioned that it had pretty decent tiki decor. Boyfriend said he hadn't been there in years and was willing to give it a shot. When we pulled into the mini mall parking lot (where the Hale Hawaii is located), we weren't sure if was even open. But, it was. The bar itself is decently tiki and had some good acoutrements (glass floats, tikis), but the rest of the interior is just DISMAL. Most of the chairs were FOLDING CHAIRS and ended up making the entire place look like the rec room at a senior center. The Hale Hawaii lets patrons smoke in there (since it's owner-staffed only) and there is a thick cig haze over the entire bar. I was the only woman in the joint and I decided the owner didn't actually look like a guy who wanted to make me a mai tai, so I settled for a Jack & Coke. The J&C was at least perfectly strong, but the entire vibe of the place is a bit depressing. It wasn't the worst dive I've ever been in (and I actually LIKE dives), but I really don't think I need to return. read more

Was feeling thirsty and was in the vicinity so I pulled off PCH to wet my whistle. First thing that hit me was the SMELL. The stench of last nights' cigarrettes hangs heavy in the air. Lo and behold, there are ASHTRAYS ON THE BAR!! Yuck! Gross!! This bar allows "smoking". Thumbs down before even taking a seat...what a shame. read more

This place seems to be open whenever they feel like it. No hours posted outside. We live nearby and finally happened to stop by when they were open. I quickly realized this place is probably only still in business because people can smoke inside. The Tiki theme is kinda oldskool and cheesy but very fun to look at all the little decorations. We had two drinks each and were on our way. We will not be back anytime soon. I guess if you are a local barfly that wants to be able to smoke inside while you have a few drinks this would be a perfect hangout. read more

Horrible!!!! Went for some beers with a friend who lives local to the bar, the place has no ventilation and was I was choking on cigarette smoke so bad, I didn't finish my drink and left. you can go here a say wsup to Ron. he's the owner, bartender and security gaurd. he's awesome with service and a smile. important sports games are always on and its never crowded if this is your kind of thing. people should be mostly locals but for some weird reason tons of san pedro people found their way to the cozy bar. i can imagine it getting crowded after 12pm but that takes the fun of laying low. If you do decide to go their remember to show respect to the regulars. Drink prices are reasonable compared to the rate of inflation. read more

The 1st time I tried coming here they were closed. It was a Saturday. If you go you should go on a weeknight. I finally made it back on a Wednesday night. It's owner run, so there is a lot of smoking in here. Frankly, tho I rarely pick up a cigarette I always felt drinking and smoking went hand in hand, so it was not a big deal to me. There is a fair amount of tiki-ness here and the owner, is cool. The hubs and I sat at the bar and asked what the specialties were and were told it was the scorpion bowl, but it's not a solo drink, more for sharing in a group of 4. So we went with mai tais, which were very yummy. We followed that with Primo beers (big points for carrying hawaiian beer). Drink prices were average for a tiki bar, not cheap, but within reason. All in all it's not bad if you're in the area. I suggest sitting at the bar, otherwise you'll end up sitting on a folding table and chairs. read more

Hale Hawaii is a great place to unwind , relax . I am ready to go back and see my old friends . In the 1980s it was the hot spot on the pch highway . I hope the owner is doing great . Always people havin fun after work. I was a full time regular there from 1981 to 1986. I hope many of the old regulars are ok and doing fine .
