Harold's Place New Years Eve Celebration 2015
    Shane O.

Harold's Place is cool. Its not meant to be Ritz or the Beverly Hilton, it's Harold's Place. It's a place where you can be yourself without any front, a place where you can "Let Your Hair Down" and have some good old fun with the friends who you may bring with you or the friends you make while having a night out watching any variety of local bands who perform there on given Friday or Saturday night. And, have I Mentioned any New Year Eve Celebration held there yet? Well, let's just say that "they are over the top". O'Briens Edge band is a regular for this night of the year for at least the past ten years. No Cover and great drink prices with a rocking band who perform their own written songs all night, and you never know who they have sitting in at any given point of their shows.

It's currently closed. Don't know when it will reopen. Has something to do with the California Dept. of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

I am a local. and I had never been here, until this past weekend. However, I know it from…read moretelevision. Not because it was featured on a news segment, or something similar, but because I saw it on an episode of Monk. It was used as a background prop. Funny what writing helps you remember, and hopefully what you remember is good stuff. Before I stepped into this bar, I expected it to be a Diver bar, in the grittiest sense, but I was wrong, it is a Dive bar in the most exciting of ways: It is a collection of tchotchkes (a fancy word for trinkets) that when admired as a whole and then independently give this place a whimsical personality. Imagine having a friend that when invited to a pool party wears a bikini with a fun print--- like cherries or flamingos, and is always down for a shot and playful mayhem. Being around this type of personality amps up the party soul of a moment because their vibe is that of a buzz-nurturer. Meaning that when I was in the bar, and all it has to offer, made me want to have a good time, regardless of what I carried in from the outside. The place gives immediate Tiki Bar vibes but does not carry the moment to full fruition. For example, in my pictures I show curtains with Tiki Idols, and a light fixture adorn with its own hula skirt but the Tiki motif does not transport one to a Luau where dancers sway as they wait for a pig to finish roasting. Instead, the Tiki vibes are sharply contrasted with posters and other keepsakes that are both aspiration and life lessons. For instance, one reminds us to leave your drama outside. Another hanging placard lists advisories that (straight) men should adhere when hitting on women. One of these is the fact that some women's sexual preference is NO. Another poster explains what happens when girls drink too much. One of the 10 outcomes is that women confuse the kitchen floor for their mattress when laying down. Like I said, all of these small and bigger touches combine to give this place a personality that draws one to have a good time. For me, there were two standout items in the place- 1) a jukebox and a 2) pool table. I was with three people that played pool better than me. One of them explained the purpose of a chalk mound. One is suppose to rub the place between their thumb and index finger to get chalk right in there. Then rub the chalk on the stick. This will create less friction which will help you shoot better. I did all that. This moment also allowed me and another member of my group to have a lot of hard wood jokes-- what are you going to do, we were having a good time at this place, and these jokes felt right. The jukebox was also free. I played Ariana Grande's version of Popular from Wicked and I felt the song. I was warbling loudly, and off key, and dancing because I was feeling the tune and the drinks. At the end, some of the people in the bar clapped and hollered. I went to put in another song I was stopped, the regulars were watching football on a Sunday, go figure. That is the thing about this bar, it is a regular's bar. People knew each other, people knew I was the first timer. Like when I spoke, two or three people answered my question. When I was looking for the key a customer directed me to it. So this place is definitely a place where regulars are at. And if you know anything about dive bar culture, regulars who know each other make a community. So you will need to navigate these dynamics if you attend. For instance, one of my friends was in the bathroom, doing the business of two. A regular opened the door and my friend was like, I am here, closed the door. The regular did not close the door, instead he made a joke about leaving the door just a bit open, while being a bro about it. I was horrified just being a witness. But between bar flies these type of jokes might be understood as joyful. But it would take me an alternate life to find humor in potty politics. I was introduced to the White Tea shot and it has become my new shot so this place left a mark on my taste buds. The shot at the end had this strong green tea taste. The prices were right too! I can't wait to go here again, when the party vibe calls me forth! Oh and it is cash only, unless you spend 40 and above then it is card appropriate.

Service, drinks , ambiance are great! Karaoke DJ Andy is super cool.We will surely go back.read more

This bar has become my usual haunt, or watering hole, or my third place. I once heard someone talk…read moreabout how each person needs three places to be happy-- a job that fits well, a home that feels peaceful and the third place is one where one feels like one with the crowd. They are just a regular person, not their woes, hopes, titles (or lack there of), they are another joe/jane/jonx, and are seen as such, with respect and acceptance. I do not know if Crimsin has become my third place, I love the gym, and places where I am invited to romp, and places where culture has esteem, but this place is definitely a place where I feel engaged by the mood, vibe, staff, and possibility so maybe one day in the future this place will be my third, I just can't say that, today. This place is definitely a dive bar--- meaning one comes for the beers and the shots, not necessarily to be impressed on transported by a mixologist. For me that was a point against the house of Crimsin, but then an unlikely hero came into play: Channel. I think I got her name right, I can easily see how an S can replaced the C. Whether her name is spelled with an S or C, one thing is clear, her talents are a gift to this place. I described to her how I do not really like the taste of alcohol, thus I gravitate toward drinks that are sugary cocktails. She took my limited explanation and concocted a raspberry lemon drop worthy of being held by a rom-com heroine as she described her latest fancy-free quarrel with her best friend in a NY hot-spot. Of course, both the heroine and the the bff have french tip nails that are to die. Since understanding my flavor profile, and my proclivities toward glitz in sip, she has crafted wonderful drink after wonderful drink. I appreciate her candy apple cocktail, and her black bitters drink that she warned me about before sipping, real bitters were in the drink, so I may have to chew or straight-up gulp. If you are in the area, port before a cruise, or coming to or from the fish market, stop here and ask for her, if you tend to like a drink served in martini glass. However, Jules, another bartender from this joint recently made me a blueberry cocktail- that I loved to the last hearty sip- and she served in a regular glass. I always paired cocktails with martini glasses, like I imagine coffee on a mug, but if you let it cool morning coffee would taste just as good in milk glass. The place has a man-cave kind of feel for sure. In the back there is a pool table (put a quarter down if you wan to play) that is often populated. If you never play pool, find an opponent that is at your level, and you will grow to understand its purpose. But if you play someone better than you will just hate the game. More broadly, this is true about life, that is why equity for all lives matter. They also have televisions that play all major events, and a juke box of modern times, where you can pay via an app. So this place has all the trimmings needed for a good time at bar, including a shuffle board table and a policy that allows you to bring in food from nearby eaters, or I guess even from your home. Another bar tender that you should ask for is Garrett. I stopped going for a while and then he made me feel like I could come back once and again. I really cannot remember how he did that so the words of Virgil are true--- people will often forget what you said, but you never forget how they made you feel. Weird how one can be nostalgic for a bar, but I can also see if you have. bar to call your own, that seems more ordinary than unique. A lot of people like Garrett he has this salt-to--the earth kind of vibe, which reminds most goers, that someone human can listen to you and respond with simple words that ring true, in a super good easy way. Visit Crimsin and make a Tuesday or Wednesday one where something fun can happen.

1 Star - Worst Experience I've Ever Had at a Bar…read more I've been to The Blind Donkey in downtown Long Beach before but what happened last night deserves to be shared. I came here with a friend last night and ordered a blonde beer that tasted completely off -- it genuinely tasted like blue cheese. My friend encouraged me to ask for a replacement since something was clearly wrong with it. When she brought it to the bar, the bartender told her he'd replace it and that it was on the house, but then made her pay for the second drink anyway. If I had known she'd still be charged, I would've just not asked for another drink. When I came up to the bar to clarify why she paid for something he said was comped, the bartender backtracked and said he "didn't mean" that. I asked if they could void the second charge, since this was supposed to be a simple replacement. He kept explaining that he is charging us for this second one because it was not a blonde, it was a white ale. I told him that's fine, but why did he say it was "on the house" and now charging us anyway? He ended up bringing over the manager. The manager was a short, Latino man with a hat on. He was incredibly rude from the moment he arrived explaining the beer was a blonde- which I know what I ordered, but tasted whack. He didn't look at us, didn't listen to anything we were saying, and without asking a single question he grabbed both drinks we paid for and dumped them down the drain. We were stunned -- we paid for both of them and now had nothing. When he came back, I calmly told him we paid for both drinks he just threw out. His response? "Don't expect to come here and get free drinks." Which is wild considering we never asked for anything free -- we were just trying to get the mistaken charge fixed. When I told him he needed to void the drink he dumped, he called security on us. We weren't loud, drunk, or confrontational. Security refused to give us the manager's name, and only one finally whispered "Ken," though at that point it felt like they were just saying anything to get us out the door. I've worked in customer-facing roles before. I understand dive bars aren't known for luxury service, but this wasn't about service -- it was about basic respect, integrity, and not charging customers for drinks you throw away yourself. I'm leaving this review as a Long Beach local, it's saddening to see how a popular bar like The Blind Donkey treats their customers. This was the worst experience I've ever had.
