So happy to find this venue. I met and started dating as San Pedro woman almost 3 years ago. I'm from the south Bay and had no idea about San Pedro. We started going there regularly. I can't count the number of times but dozens at least and I've never been disappointed. The talent has been amazing, and the acoustics are fantastic. What a fun spot! First time here. This is an actual, legit showroom. It's associated with a music academy next door under the same name. It is not a bar or restaurant. There's street parking, and a lot of the other businesses on the street seem to be shuttered, so parking shouldn't be an issue. There's also an Italian deli on the corner, about 500' away, where you can grab a bite beforehand if you want. The people here are all great and welcoming. Bottled water is sold for $1, but they also have a water fountain where you can refill the bottle at no cost. Or bring your own bottle. They also offer hot water and an assortment of tea bags and even bags of Maxwell House coffee to steep, again at no charge. They're really about supporting the artist and not trying to profit on amenities. The front row has comfy, low seating that you can pretty much recline in. Ample leg room. Next are a couple rows of regular seats, behind which are seats with tables. I believe I heard you can bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks here, but please check before doing so. Such a great small little venue. Lots of parking available. Really great sound. Got to see a Pink Floyd cover-band for our first outing here. Great night. Suggestion, get there early to get your preferred spot to sit. It really doesn't matter where you sit technically because you'll be able to see/hear everything well. Problem is if you have a larger group you may not be able to sit together. Just in case that's a deal breaker for ya, it's something to keep in mind. read more

What a cool venue this is. Easy to get to, plenty of parking, pretty cheap tickets. Came here for a CD release event for Eclectic Trio. The entire front row was papasan chairs. I immediately sat in one and it was like the band was playing in my living room. Full view of the band. Only issue is those chairs are so low to the ground it was a challenge for this 41 year old to get out of the chair. All the other rows were regular chairs. Cool place. Check out their website for the schedule. Most bands seem to be in the jazz category. You can bring in your own drinks and snacks as long as they are non alcoholic. read more

Had the ultimate pleasure of enjoying Jim Curry and his Rocky Mountain Christmas show tonight. I'd previously been to Alvas once before, so when Jim's show appeared on my Facebook feed, I was all over it! I got to surprise my mom - who listens to John Denver music with her heart - with a little bit - no scratch that - a big bit of Christmas cheer. This is a great, little, intimate venue. You feel like you're watching a show in someone's living room, except said living room has great acoustics. Keep those great shows coming and we'll be back! read more

This is one of the best places to see bands in Los Angeles. It's very close and intimate without speakers that are so loud like at the forum that when you're close up, you can barely hear your friends speak. However, note that they do not serve food or alcohol so it's best to have a bite nearby. There's a great Italian restaurant a couple doors down and there's a really great steakhouse a few minutes away. Free parking after 6 o'clock on the street . The building has a really interesting history as well that goes back to old-time Hollywood that you can look it up on their website, but it used to be a dance studio. read more

Some of the best live music that I have heard has been here. Allan Holdsworth, Virgil Donato, David Garfield, Steve Ferrone, Steve Gadd... What else do I have to say? It's small, intimate, great acoustics and the perfect place to really soak it in and enjoy not only the music, but the experience of brilliant musicians expertly and seemingly effortlessly laying it all out there. This place is a great little venue set in a small neighborhood in San Pedro. One of the nicer little neighborhoods in San Pedro. The studio is connected to a full service old school music store which Ian awesome too. The sounds system and acoustics are also top notch. We're going to see a buddy of mine fellow Yelper Ben K. The band is called the Baker Brothers big band and Ben plays lead sax and he is bad ass. September 28th if you want to see some good old school music. Friends took us to a Christmassy Jazz concert here the year before Covid and we were new to town and we were surprised by the excellent sound quality and professionalism of the musicians and arrangements as well as the intimate setting. It was a great first experience with the place. We hope the shows will keep rolling and that we will be able to attend many more musical events at Alva's. read more

We have played there twice in the past year and the whole band loves this spot...Great sound and lights (in no small part due to a great Soundman - Art Alvarez) and wonderful spacious staging. Playing most clubs in L.A. is a drag due to small stages and bad monitoring systems but Alvas Showroom breaks the mold. This really helps especially for large bands such as us (Big Daddy is seven pieces). ...Check out this comfortable room..great for the audience and for the artist. read more

What a great performance space this lil' gem is. Thanks to Dave G for putting this on our radar for future intimate shows. His Trio Eclectic had their CD release party here recently, and we were not only blown away by the music, but by the venue itself. He also shared the night with a very creative local abstract artist as well. Great date night! The bookings lean heavily on Jazz, but one of my favorite blues performers/writers Doug Macleod was recently on the calendar too. Keep an eye on their schedule, and even if you don't recognize any of the artists, do yourself a favor and just blindly pick a night and check them out. A nice plus is that it is BYOB, at least on the night we went, but you may want to call ahead to confirm. Looking forward to another visit soon! read more

This is a hidden gem. Went to see an amazing singer songwriter on 7/20/13. It was a doggone dirty shame that the place wasn't even half full. It is such a shame that the South Bay does not support the steller talent that must go through there as it should have had more people in attendance. Great venue, loved the very intimate setting of only sixty seats and $20.tic price. BYOB and glasses. There is no food or bar. On this Saturday night, the downtown area was empty, so your pick of 100's of parking places. The business also sells lots of gorgeous guitars in a beautiful music store next door. Fear not San Pedro, come here to get your fix in arts and culture! Attached to the Alva's dance studio and music store (it's a one stop kinda area), this intimate space features some of the most talented musicians in the world. Off the top of my head- Airto and Flora Purim, John Daversa, Larry Koonse, Katisse Buckingham, Strunz and Farah and various other acts. This is a huge variety of "jazz", with edgy fusions that you will only find in LA. Who said NY was better than LA? There is a whole movement happening beneath our noses here! A whole new generation that demands quality music and will go out to seek it! All concerts are donation based and the owners (real lovers of music) go out of their way to provide this lovely opportunity for all of Los Angeles. The acoustics are just perfect, and if you're feeling like you're in the mood for some wine, bring your own bottle (or two), at no charge. Make sure to bring some snacks and cups as well. This is a terrific venue! I saw Dirk Hamilton here on Friday night. It was like sitting with a group of my friends in my living room seeing a performer whom I love. If you get there early, you can score one of the comfortable papasan chairs in the front row. the rest of the seating consists of cocktail tables for two. The downside is that they don't serve any food or drink. The upside is that you can BYOB, snacks, and glassware. the place is super clean. The sound is super clean. If you're a musician, you can get there early and shop at the music store next door. There's typically a discount if you buy something the same day as your concert. RECOMMEND!!!! read more

Alva's Showroom is a hidden gem in my own back yard. One of the few places you can go to see great jazz in L.A. Seriously. There's the Baked Potato, La Ve Lee, Catalina's and the Jazz Bakery which I'm not sure is open still. There are other clubs but none have thee roster of top flight artists coming through on a consistent basis like these clubs. Add to this small list Alva's Showroom. Functioning as a dance studio by day then transforming to a world class jazz club on the weekend in the evenings. The stage set up is large enough to give the performers a little room to breath In a great sounding room. Seating is comfortable and there isn't a bad seat in the house. Great show for short money seeing The Shagwells doing great British invasion classic rock. Great free parking right in front, a very quaint venue. No obstructed views, a few spots for dancing, great lighting and sound! All seats have tons of legroom and shoulder space which is great for me 'cause I'm a buffalo. Tables at each seat.. all facing forward. I was sitting in the 6th row... The back row.. 30 feet from stage. It is unique as you may bring in food and non-alcohol drinks. My wife and I have been to many performances at Alva's, usually with friends, and we have all been blown away by the quality of entertainment without fail. Most recently, we saw Clapton Road, a Clapton tribute band that had the place packed on January 5. In addition to being extremely talented musicians, they had great interplay amongst themselves and with the audience, and they clearly loved the intimate venue - and believe me, the audience loved them back. I hope they return soon, but in the meantime, I am certain that whatever we choose to experience from Alva's bookings will be top-notch and leave us ready to come back again and again. Cozy small concert venue in a "1950's" section of San Pedro (Averill Park, Weymouth). A dance studio by day and a world-class live music venue on some nights. South Bay and Long Beach/OC music fans need to get hip to this place. It's worth the drive. BYOB and sanwiches, pay the reasonable asking price and watch good music (jazz, prog rock, fusion, folk, blues, etc) up close with good lighting and sound. Seating is cozy, theater style, with a little shelf for drinks or water. I've caught great musicians here and even saw an early showing of the film Wrecking Crew featuring the director and some musicians. Highly recommend! read more

As a one of the best ballet teachers around, I just wish that Palma would be more professional in not showing favoritism in class. It would be perfect if she would treat all the students the same and especially show the same concern for injuries equally among the students. Other than that, she's the best. read more

I love this place! I almost hesitate to write a review lest too many people find out about it. When I am in LA, my father and I will go here. I feel like they are doing a public service by offering access to great music, in an intimate setting, and at a low cost. It's located in a small town (San Pedro) that shuts down at night so there is ample parking right out front. The last show we saw was $20 for a jazz quartet. You bring your own wine and food (bring your own wine glasses). They provide bottles of water. The acoustics are great, seats are comfortable, as I said the venue is small (seats 60), plus the owners and staff are incredibly friendly. You can't go wrong. Just look at their schedule and pick someone you'd enjoy listening too; and even if it wasn't someone you love, it's the best deal going for live entertainment. This place rocks! read more

This is a totally great venue! Here you can hear some of the greatest musicians in a very small and very intimate setting. By day it's a dance studio and at night it's transformed in a concert room. It works! And the acoustics are good. What is hot coming up? It will be Dave Liebman - the soprano sax virtuoso (on 10-25-14) and check out Andy Waddell (guitar) on 10-12-14. He is a great performing as well as composer - he has a wonderful group! I usually get out to see David Garfeild (keys) who never disappoints - always a killer show. Davids is the keyboardist and musical for George Benson (guitar). David is often out on the road with him - but when he gets back in town - go see him! He'll be there on 11-1-14 with the long time fusion band Karizma. Also flute master Tim Weisberg will be there 11-15-14. Alvas is an amazing place - where else can you hear world class musicians in such a small relaxed setting? Love it! read more
