Was in the mood for sushi. Yelp reviews were pretty good. Overall I would say meh. The appetizer sampler, the edamame seemed old, the crab Rangoon was definitely a 10! The chicken fried was okay, could have been a little better. The king dragon sushi roll was massive, you have to cut one piece in half to actually eat it. There was barely any soft shell crab.

This definitely feels like a Korean-owned Japanese restaurant for anyone who is looking for traditionally Japanese food. But with that said, the poke bowl is "rent-free, living in my mind." Best. Poke. Bowl. Around. It's about the same price as any of those stand-alone poke restaurants, but tastes way better and has better ingredients. So satisfying. 10/10 would recommend salmon poke bowl. Nice, quiet ambience with some booth seating that provides some privacy. Big enough for a group outing. And they're very sweet and accommodating. They don't make it seem like you're a hassle if you have young children.

We went here on a lark, not realizing Hakuya Sushi was here. After a quick scan of Yelp's reviews and thought this would be a good place. In honesty, we were planning to go to a different spot but I realized their parking lot is usually full this time of the evening (about 6:30 on a Thursday). And, I'm glad we stopped here. First, it wasn't crowded (and I hope it does get more crowded than what we saw). We were immediately greeted and seated in this cool area where they built semi-enclosed booths. I didn't take photos since there are plenty posted already. We ordered wine, Miso Soup, and four Maki4 rolls. First, their house Pinot Grigio is quite good, suprisingly so. So was the Miso Soup. When it came to the Maki Rolls, we ordered an Boston Roll (Tuna, Avocado and Cucumber), a Salmon Avocado Roll, Tuna Roll, and one special roll, the Valentine Roll (Sliced tuna over salmon, cucumber, avocado, cilantro, teriyaki, spicy mayo and lemon.) The presentation was nice. But more so, the food was delicious. This is on our list of Sushi Restaurants we will return to.

Cute Japanese restaurant in Buffalo Grove located in an unassuming strip plaza. Had good ratings so we decided to check it out. Food was pretty good and portions were fairly large. -Poke bowl w/black rice - delicious, would get it again, but without all the spicy mayo on it, it was a little overkill honestly. -Chicken Katsu, enough to share with two people. -Udon - tasty Tempura - so good and such a large portion, there were a couple pieces though where the batter was undercooked. Service was alright, nothing to write home about, young guy just kinda did his job - but didn't seem too enthusiastic about much. Overall, decent spot, I'd go again should I be in the area.

Visited here on a Tuesday evening, a couple of tables, noise and lighting was low/dim. First time here, you know I had to over order. Ordered: Vegetable + Shrimp Tempura, items were lightly fried and service blazing HOT! It's a good portion too. Spicy Salmon Roll Mojito Lime and 1 more mystery roll, it was good They indicate spicy but it wasn't spicy to my levels. All 3 rolls were good, recommend. Beef Teriyaki, this was good! Service was good, team effort, everyone made sure I clean napkins and filled drinks. Coming back to try out page 2 of the sushi rolls.

Service 21/2 server was very in experienced . I asked him for a few things and he just want listening . Ordered udone with spicy salmon roll . Ground salmon with a very little . Not a lot of spice did taste garlic, the rice had very little akazu . We had shrimp tempura very scarce with shrimp The decor was plywood sections as a divider by the booth The udone was good the stock was devoid of flavor . It had a tad of richness due to the tempura crumbs they use and two floating green onion. This has been on my list and finally tried it. The menu looks great as the food but my experience was very mediocre.

Delicious and fresh food. Price is reasonable. Lunch special is particularly of value. Nice staff and clean environment. Would be back and try more things!

We live just down the road, and decided to try it for dinner one night. From the outside it looks all different with the decal covering all of the windows, and when you walk in it's as though you walked into the neighborhoods of Japan! We tried a few different things among us, the Golden Mustang, Pink Lady, Hakuya Roll, and the Super Crunchy Roll. My favorite was Golden Mustang and the Hakuya roll. The Golden Mustang was wrapped in avocado and each bite was delicious! The Hakuya roll was refreshing, the cilantro really adds a nice crunch to each bite! We also decided to share the Tokyo nachos! It was indicated as a specialty so of course we had to try it, and it was great. :) The ratio between the poke and the chip was 50:50 so it made each bite enjoyable! The owner also came over to the table and checked in on us a few times. He was lovely, and it was so nice to see him interact with the guest through out the restaurant! We will certainly be back- we have all the other rolls to still try! :)

How expensive did people find it?

It's not expensive at all! The lunch specials are downright cheap considering all the yummy food you get.

    Do they have cooked sushi?

heck yes they had a bunch of super interesting tempura or fried rolls.

To clear things up about their dining area, they have 2 small tables outside and 1 small and 2 big tables inside. Small tables - 2 chairs. Big tables - 4 chairs. On weekdays, you don't need to make a reservation. On the weekends due to their limited dine in area, I would recommend a reservation to be safe. You can make a reservation through Google/Yelp or phone call. Parking is easy since it's in a strip mall. There is also a 3% charge if you use plastic. Just a note, I tried looking at their food pictures on their website, but it kind of runs slow. Sometimes it would freeze. I think they need to fix it. I would return here to try other items. I would highly recommend ordering off their Malaysian menu instead of the miscellaneous. Don't order orange chicken or General Tao's chicken. Very cringe because you can get that literally anywhere. Get the Malaysian food because it's hard to find in Illinois. The owner is very sweet and the service is attentive. We ordered lor bak, nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, hokkien mee, and kuih talam. Just a FYI, the portions are very generous. For 2 people, I would recommend ordering 2 dishes. Prices are reasonable for what you get. A pot of tea is $6. -lor bak 5 - I highly recommend this appetizer. It has crispy pork sausage with shrimp fritters, beancurd, and cucumber. It comes with two sauces. Everything was delicious. -nasi lemak 5 - I love the chicken rendang. The meat is very tender and it has a deep flavor. You can taste the spices that went into it. -Hainanese chicken rice 3.5 - I gave Penang Malaysian Cuisine a 4 because the rice was delicious. HD's version, the rice was not as moist and flavorful. The chicken was not bad, it's about the same as Penang's. It could be a bit more succulent without the sauces. -hokkien mee 4 - this won't be as tasty as in Malaysia. I liked the big pieces of shrimp, an adequate amount of sliced pork and hard boiled egg. The broth is still very good. If it's your first time having this, I still recommend it. -kuih talam 5 - I would suggest this if you like pandan. It's not sweet. It has a soft and bouncy texture.

There's a kind of "night out" vibe here, even if you're just grabbing dinner on a random weeknight. The menu is creative, with specialty rolls and fusion-style dishes that feel a little more elevated than your standard lineup. When it's on, it's really on. Service is iffy to be honest. Staff is attentive and knowledgeable, and the whole experience feels polished. Drinks are well-crafted, and the patio (when open) adds a whole extra layer to the experience. That said, this is where the missing fifth star lives. Shakou can be a little inconsistent. Some visits feel like a five-star experience, others land closer to "really good, but not unforgettable." A few dishes might lean a bit too sweet or not quite balance the flavors, and during busier times, things can feel a little rushed or loud. But even with that, it's still an easy recommendation. This is a great spot when you want sushi that feels a little more upscale without going full fine dining. It's stylish, flavorful, and usually delivers a really solid experience. Four stars, comfortably... with just enough flashes of brilliance to make you keep coming back!

We had to stand in the lobby for 5 minutes without much information, while other groups who came in without a reservation after us were seated before us. Furthermore, the reservation was for the "Patio" and while technically we were seated on the "Patio", I would say it was the bottom rung of the patio. Sat at the first table outside the restaurant, underneath the awning with a bird's nest overhead chirping the entire time. Essentially in my opinion, when you make a reservation somewhere, you don't really expect to be seated in probably the worst location they have to offer. Food was pretty decent. We had two bowls basically. Both were okay, like any Sushi style restaurant, prices were a bit high, especially considering their location in the heart of the AH downtown. They unfortunately don't do reservations for a group as small as 2 people; but for a bigger group, call ahead. The inside had an elegant aesthetic with four rotary lines all connected to the back kitchen area. One is sat at a table with an ipad to view the menu, ingredients in each item, and lists out beverages you can order. The table comes with chopsticks and soy sauce but one can call the attendant for utensils, water, or your check. It's $3.69 for every plate grabbed from the rotary. Once you finish the plate, you discard it into the table slot. The ipad tracks your plate count and for every 10 finished, you get a gachapon toy from the machine above the central rotary track. If you like wasabi or ginger, no worries as these are constantly in rotation to grab. Our favorites of the evening were the vegetable rolls, crab rangoon, tempura sweet potato roll, and the different nigiri's (umami beef, spicy kani, seared scallop, etc). If you don't see a roll on the rotary you wanted, check the ipad as you may be able to order for no upcharge. The nice robot on the top track will bring your dish right out to the table! Place is on the end of a shopping plaza. Not much to see but it looked clean and inviting. Staff was kind and explained the process. This place functions like I would expect. Each plate is a set price, you pick what you want and feed the plate into a chute on the side for your tally. If you don't find something on the conveyor belt, then you get a tablet and put it in to be shuttle delivered to your table. It's very cool to watch and be a part of. So that aspect was fun. The sushi was okay but heavily Americanized. Lots of heavily sauced and beef options. No seasoning of the rice, Tamago had torched spicy mayonnaise on top but was cold, some rolls were composed well but others were kind of bland. We did have a volcano roll that was not great. Still had to pay for the plate, which was not fun. Thankfully not much got wasted. A rotary sushi place is a gimmick in of itself. It's a good operating model, but it's a rarity in the states so there is that appeal to try something new. Then there's the plate game, if you feed ten plates into the chute you get a capsule prize. Then you get a frequent diner card that if you pay 25 dollars you get a stamp and if you get 10 stamps you get to spin the prize wheel. I appreciate game systems, but this place skirts that edge of too many. As a restaurant, it's neat to try and not too bad on price for decent sushi. There's a lot going on, but if you focus on the food then it's a nice place to have a bite.
