The Spicy Tuna Poke bowl has been a go-to each time we frequent Hakuya. Over the years, it has changed a bit. The bed of lettuce used to be romaine, but now it is solely iceberg lettuce. I still enjoy the big pieces of fish and mix of cucumbers, avocado, seaweed with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. There was a time it included edamame but doesn't look like it is included anymore. My kids ordered the spider roll, dragon roll and beef udon that came with a california roll. The rolls were a good size and had a good ratio of rice to other ingredients. The pieces of sashimi are good sized with appropriate amount of rice in each piece. The salmon kama is a nice appetizer. It comes out scorching hot and crispy. It can be tricky to eat because of the bones, but worth the work! I really like the design of the booths with the authentic decor resembling Japanese architecture. I don't like that the tables are consistently sticky when we eat there and if we don't get a booth, the tables are wobbly. No matter where we sit, there is always a table with a wobbly leg. The service is always super welcoming and friendly. Our waiter may have been new and still in training because we waited 24 mins from when we asked for the check until it was brought to us. And even then, I had to ask the busboy to remind our server for the check because he kept walking in and out of the room taking other tables' orders and refilling water. Upon realizing the long waiting time, the server was apologetic and still very kind which I appreciated. Their shrimp bibimbap is my favorite in the area, and #1 on my list of what to get for lunch. I could eat it every day, it is so delicious. This definitely feels like a Korean-owned Japanese restaurant for anyone who is looking for traditionally Japanese food. But with that said, the poke bowl is "rent-free, living in my mind." Best. Poke. Bowl. Around. It's about the same price as any of those stand-alone poke restaurants, but tastes way better and has better ingredients. So satisfying. 10/10 would recommend salmon poke bowl. Nice, quiet ambience with some booth seating that provides some privacy. Big enough for a group outing. And they're very sweet and accommodating. We went here on a lark, not realizing Hakuya Sushi was here. After a quick scan of Yelp's reviews and thought this would be a good place. In honesty, we were planning to go to a different spot but I realized their parking lot is usually full this time of the evening (about 6:30 on a Thursday). And, I'm glad we stopped here. First, it wasn't crowded (and I hope it does get more crowded than what we saw). We were immediately greeted and seated in this cool area where they built semi-enclosed booths. I didn't take photos since there are plenty posted already. We ordered wine, Miso Soup, and four Maki4 rolls. First, their house Pinot Grigio is quite good, suprisingly so. So was the Miso Soup. When it came to the Maki Rolls, we ordered an Boston Roll (Tuna, Avocado and Cucumber), a Salmon Avocado Roll, Tuna Roll, and one special roll, the Valentine Roll (Sliced tuna over salmon, cucumber, avocado, cilantro, teriyaki, spicy mayo and lemon.) The presentation was nice. But more so, the food was delicious. This is on our list of Sushi Restaurants we will return to. read more

Cute Japanese restaurant in Buffalo Grove located in an unassuming strip plaza. Had good ratings so we decided to check it out. Food was pretty good and portions were fairly large. -Poke bowl w/black rice - delicious, would get it again, but without all the spicy mayo on it, it was a little overkill honestly. -Chicken Katsu, enough to share with two people. -Udon - tasty Tempura - so good and such a large portion, there were a couple pieces though where the batter was undercooked. Service was alright, nothing to write home about, young guy just kinda did his job - but didn't seem too enthusiastic about much. Ordered: Vegetable + Shrimp Tempura, items were lightly fried and service blazing HOT! It's a good portion too. Spicy Salmon Roll Mojito Lime and 1 more mystery roll, it was good They indicate spicy but it wasn't spicy to my levels. All 3 rolls were good, recommend. Beef Teriyaki, this was good! Service 21/2 server was very in experienced . I asked him for a few things and he just want listening . Ordered udone with spicy salmon roll . Ground salmon with a very little . Not a lot of spice did taste garlic, the rice had very little akazu . We had shrimp tempura very scarce with shrimp The decor was plywood sections as a divider by the booth The udone was good the stock was devoid of flavor . It had a tad of richness due to the tempura crumbs they use and two floating green onion. This has been on my list and finally tried it. The menu looks great as the food but my experience was very mediocre. read more

This was our first visit to Hakuya Sushi for my mother's birthday and it was a good experience overall! Our server was very attentive and helpful in recommending certain dishes; we ordered a variety of appetizers and some special rolls, including the spicy tuna, king dragon, and mango gaga. The rolls are absolutely massive compared to other sushi venues, so I would order conservatively at first and decide if you need more. We ordered entrees of udon, chirashi, and whaeduhbop (korean sashimi salad over rice); unfortunately there was a hair in the whaeduhbop, but it appeared to be an honest mistake and the server apologized / re-ordered the dish. We live just down the road, and decided to try it for dinner one night. From the outside it looks all different with the decal covering all of the windows, and when you walk in it's as though you walked into the neighborhoods of Japan! We tried a few different things among us, the Golden Mustang, Pink Lady, Hakuya Roll, and the Super Crunchy Roll. My favorite was Golden Mustang and the Hakuya roll. The Golden Mustang was wrapped in avocado and each bite was delicious! The Hakuya roll was refreshing, the cilantro really adds a nice crunch to each bite! We also decided to share the Tokyo nachos! It was indicated as a specialty so of course we had to try it, and it was great. :) The ratio between the poke and the chip was 50:50 so it made each bite enjoyable! The owner also came over to the table and checked in on us a few times. He was lovely, and it was so nice to see him interact with the guest through out the restaurant! I was very upset and disappointed by my meal. I got delivered a Spider Roll.amd a Dragon Roll. My order arrived and ate a few slices of each roll to notice that they used imitation crab meat to fill the roll. The actual shrimp and soft shell crab were barely visible. This is an awesome place for fresh sushi and huge maki rolls. Very reasonably priced. The party tray is a great value but bring your appetite because it is huge. The miso soup is great for a cold day. The salmon poke bowl is served with lots of fresh fish and vegetables. The serving is much larger than what I had expected. My friend was visiting from out of town & wanted to meet somewhere close to where she was staying so found this place with great reviews. The restaurant is in a strip mall with plenty of parking. The windows are covered but there is signage outside. The restaurant is spacious with both booths & tables. We were seated in the back. As we were looking at our menus, the Friendly owner stopped by our table to say hello and answer any questions. Their menu consists of Japanese and Korean entrees. I was originally going to order the Combo A Dinner with 3 pre-selected Maki Rolls but he recommended their special from Tues-Thurs which was less expensive and I got to choose my 3 Maki Rolls instead. The service is always super friendly and efficient. The restaurant is honestly quite cozy as well. The takeout is done properly. I have no cons to add to this. I had no idea sushi was meant to be eaten as finger food until tonight!! My boyfriend and I frequent this restaurant and have never had an issue. Tonight we ordered $65 worth of sushi (takeout) and we are extremely disappointed. While the food quality was delicious the way the sushi was put together was not well. We attempted to use our chopsticks and the pieces of sushi fell apart! We used a spatula to scoop out some sushi from the to-go container and that seemed to help but when we would use our chopsticks on our again the sushi fell apart. We had to eat our meal with our hands, literally fingers and we're not impressed. We waited about 45 mins for the sushi, it was ready when we arrived and the overall taste was incredible but to have the sushi fall apart as we ate it completely ruined the meal for us. It looks like we are taking our business back to Sushi Station, meaning driving all the way to Rolling Meadows from Buffalo Grove to get sushi that stays together. Amazing lunch special! Cute little nooks in the back that offers privacy. You can still hear other people talk though but that's on the loud people. They play great music!! I don't understand how Hakuya Sushi gets good reviews. After a not so great sushi experience a few years ago, we decided to try it again today. We got carry out and order different rolls, nigiri, and noodles. The ONLY thing that was good was the tofu noodles. They are great and you get a decent portion. But the sushi is terrible. Rice is too vinegary. Fish is not fresh. The tuna nigiri tasted like a freezer that was defrosted. The rolls are very poorly made with very little fish. The scallions are old and dried out. The avocado is old and brown. Looks like we won't be returning for sushi, unless maybe will be back for some noodles only. read more
