Celebrated a birthday dinner here with 7 people and the service and food was amazing! Everyone in my party ordered a lot of sushi and sake and enjoyed it. I ordered their chicken teriyaki which comes with a salad, soup, rice and mixed tempura plate for $16.95. This is a ton of food to share or take 1/2 home. The restaurant even remembered it was dads birthday and brought out some delicious green tea ice cream and cake dessert. They turned off the lights and all the staff in the restaurant sang happy birthday. Everyone working here was so friendly and accommodating. They also take reservations which is great. Would definitely come back when visiting Ojai. read more

I would rate this place about average. The service was not bad but they took a long time to bring the check. The food is just alright. My family ordered four roles of sushi. I may come back in the future but I'm not going out of my way. They do have a very large selection of roles which is a plus. read more

Meh. I've been here before and I remember it being amazing! My partner and I were pretty disappointed by the size of the rolls as well as the flavor of the vegetarian rolls in particular. The vegetarian one wrapped in cucumber tasted like pretty much nothing. read more

The food is great although, unfortunately the service is really poor. Every time I have dined in the food has taken way too long to come out. If you are going you should expect to wait at least 45-60 minutes for even a miso soup to come out. I asked for a refill of water twice and the waiter did not bring it out after asking. He finally brought out the water as he was bringing the check out. As an Ojai local I truly hope they better their service because the food truly is so delicious. I suggest trying Sakura which is just as delicious and the service is MUCH faster. read more

Here I am again! Jessica roll was calling my name again! Agusta continues to provide the best customer service! I'm so glad she's there. We love this restaurant! My husband is so picky and doesn't eat fish, sushi or any of it! I do! But he found the tempura and teriyaki chicken and it's the best we've had! The service is always friendly and good. Any sushi dish I've gotten is delicious! This place deserves 5 stars! And it's reasonably priced! read more

We used to live in Ojai and we miss Hakane a lot! They have so many delicious vegan options and their miso soup is vegan, too! Always super friendly service and such a nice and welcoming atmosphere. read more

Sushi take-out during the Pandemic, just what the doctor ordered. They get the Spider Roll right. Tuna was fantastic. And the side green salad is not iceberg lettuce but fresh greens, and the dressing is delicious. My thought after splurging a little $, "absolutely, without a doubt, worth it." read more

Hours on yelp say close at 8:30pm hours on sign of store say 5pm-9pm. It's 7pm and they're closed. Inconsistent.

Charming little family sushi spot with fresh fish choices and artful presentation. The specials are always tasty too and Jay the owner and his staff give friendly efficient service. Love his salmon skin hand rolls so crispy with fresh veg and the spicy scallop rolls and halibut sashimi with ponzu always delish. read more

Really inconsistent with their times. if you're going to put out a certain time you're closed at follow through with it not some random hour you chose. Showed up at 7 & was told it was closed despite their sign outside saying 9 & their yelp saying 8:30. read more

I was in town for business and had a taste for sushi. The reviews for Hakane Sushi looked good, so I gave it a try. I had two rainbow rolls and one of the abercole rolls...delicious. Three rolls was just enough though I probably could have handled a fourth...highly recommended if you are in Ojai and have a taste for sushi. read more

I'm a local fan...such great food and consistently good service. I love their sake selection too. Lovely patio for outdoor dining. I have found their sushi to be fresh and tasty every single time I order it. And their tempura is light and crispy, not at all greasy. read more

Love this restaurant! The food is always fresh and the owners and staff are so personable. Always a joy to eat there.

Had dinner there tonight (June 3, 2020). Everything clean, following health guidelines, masks on waiter, cook and staff, disposable implements. I was the only person dining at the back patio, one other guest at front patio. A number of take out customers came by while I was there. The best part: yummy salmon bento box! I felt safe, and enjoyed a good meal. Thanks Hakane Sushi! Still loving your aloha spirit and Hawaiian music to dine by. read more

I was bummed to get almost no service on Sunday. Was given a menu by hostess, server came and I ordered. Requested some extra ginger. Food was put on table without a word spoken. Almost no ginger, I was nor worried as I figured I'd ask during a check up. While eating I noticed the shrimp was shriveled up and a bit dry,but okay it's covid conditions so I understand. No follow up from server at all, never once stopped at my table. I was planning on ordering more sushi snf a drink when the server finally came over and dropped my bill on the table and said here's your bill. I felt uncared for as a customer and left still hungry. I get covid conditions, but to not even once check on me and rush me out 8n 25mi utes was a real bummer. I'll try again because I really hope this is a one off. read more

TOTAL FAIL! NOT RECOMMENDED! Disgusting dinner here 12/8/2019. We've been eating at Hakane for years, but never again. It's taken a sharp downhill slide beyond bad. I'm grateful we didn't order sushi, given our meal. The chicken teriyaki entrees were tough and mealy, the vegetables tasted off, tempura tasted of old cooking oil..... Miso soup was lukewarm and smelled fishy, ugh. I told the waiter frankly we were disappointed & disgusted, he actually agreed (!) but no one came to talk to us or apologize, nor did anyone offer to comp any of the food. In fact, the check overcharged for our beers, and we had to point it out and ask for it to be fixed (the waiter blamed the POS system - wait, what?) - and management still charged us full price for everything, even though we left 90% of our entrees on the plates. We left the restaurant annoyed and hungry. Oh, the restroom was filthy. UGH! read more

Exceptional purist sushi experience at VERY reasonable prices. Highly recommended by L.A. sushi snob.

For years I am escaping to this little authentic best-kept secret. Come and check for yourself.!

This was our first time at Hakane. We loved it! We liked that it's away from the hubbub section of Ojai Ave. Less cars, less congestion, easy parking. We sat outside, in the front of the restaurant. Perfectly shaded. It's got a good vibe inside and out. The waitress was very attentive, and happened to be a local, so I could reminisce about things in Ojai. I ordered the Omakase and it was very reasonably proced for an Omakase. The quality was very high in my opinion. Everything tasted very fresh: Uni, Spanish Mackrel, Scallop .... Delicious! My wife had a Ramen lunch plate with Gyoza and California Roll. They cooked the gyoza perfectly, the skin was lightly crisp along the edges. The Ramen was quite tasty. We will definitely be back for lunch next time we are in Ojai. read more

As a regular customer of Hakane, I expect great food, atmosphere, and service. This place has it all. The owner-chef is so great and kind, the food and service are wow, amazing. I can tell how fresh the fish is and the hard effort the owners put to make this restaurant AMAZING~. And the patio, is pet friendly and has a nice view of the East end. Definitely one of my favorite restaurant and definitely recommend to anyone. WE LOVE HAKANE! read more

My go to spot for sushi for years. Family owned and operated. Fresh always. Varied menu w rolls galore, sashimi that will make your mouth water, cooked items made w finesse. Amazing super fresh sushi. Adorable atmosphere. I love the sushi chef. If there's space sit at the bar. One of favorite dates spots.

Service was the worst I've ever had. I always tip didn't here. I do not live here but if this place is still open next time I'm in town I won't go there. Look at the health score pretty scary. Bathroom is more filthy then than one in a crap town gas station read more

I don't like sushi but my wife loves it so I never really went to many sushi places but my wife told me they had good chicken teriyaki so I chanced it. Long story short I've eaten there probably close to 5-6 times in the last 3 weeks. The chicken is tender and juicy and the sauce is amazing and I'm told all their Sauces are made in house. The rice was also nice and soft but not mushy which was a treat because most places have stale rice or undercooked in my experience. Noticed that they changed staff a lot recently but every time I've gone I was immediately seated, got my food fast and was well attended. Also heard they are doing $1 sake on Wednesdays so I'm looking forward to today ;) I definitely recommend it and is my favorite place to eat in ojai now read more

Definitely our FAVORITE restaurant and THEE BEST Sushi around. Hakane has the freshest fish, excellent customer service, and it is VERY reasonable for all the food you get. I don't know why I have never been here... Such a quirky spot with great indoor and outdoor seating. So much to look at! We ordered edamame, chirashi bowl, pink lady roll and a salmon skin roll. The portions were substantial to say the least. The edamame was a good size and so buttery. This is probably my new favorite place for a salmon skin roll because it was manageable! Most places roll it into a large pinwheel you have to tear apart. I love that their rolls are more than 6 pieces long. We had great service and the food was phenomenal! The price was comparative to other high quality sushi places we visit. We'll definitely be back. read more

This is the best sushi restuarant in town! Their special rolls are huge and delicious. The lunch specials during the week are a great deal! I've been going to Hakane since they opened and have been within 10 minutes walking distance ever since. I'm an Ojai local and I like to stand up for the places I believe to be decent and bring my friends to. That said, this is the only place I've ever wanted to write a bad review for...ever. Technically, this is my first Yelp! review. Me and a few friends decided to go out on a double date. Our server was great, very quick, even let us know that if we were drinking, that we could wait for five minutes until Happy Hour. I ordered a Hot Night roll, some soup and a Sapporo. Not bad at all! ...I looked to my left. I swear on my Grandfathers grave, there was a rat from behind the booth corner, closest to the door by the street that hopped up on the table, jammed over to the one closest to us ( the one over, second to the other door) and sat in a kangaroo position. It was a GREY RAT WITH PINK EARS AND TAIL. IT RAN OVER TWO TABLES TO LOOK AT OUR FOOD. Don't get me wrong, I've bred rats when I was a kid, but this thing was one second from ON OUR TABLE?! So. We informed our waiter that there was a rat crawling behind the booth area. I couldn't stop trying to see if the head popped out again, so I brought my phone out and started recording the corner with the 'rat escape'. Apparently, now the Manager was paying attention, because she (10 minutes later) ran past me looking at the camera with a piece of paper. Not to block my camera, apparently to... catch a rat with? To make this long story short, I we were assured that it would be dealt with by morning. The tables WERE NEVER WIPED OFF. **DUDE, THEY NEVER WIPED THE TABLES OFF!** Well obviously this was taken care of. AFTER WE GOT OUR FULL BILL. And by taken care of, I mean that my friend asked if "...Do we get a Rattatoui discount?" ......We got %10 off. I'm never going back here, it's being reported to the health department, and it's officially the most disgusting place I've ever eaten... and I'm sickened to say how many times I'd eaten there before. read more

I was up in Ojai for work and was craving some sushi. Surprisingly, the sushi was pretty good here and the staff was super friendly. I ordered a spicy scallop handroll and the love love roll which has no rice. Out of the two, I really enjoyed the love love roll. It was tuna wrapped with spicy tuna, avocado, scallop and topped with a creamy sauce. The spicy scallop handroll had a little too much mayo for me but it still tasted fresh. If you're looking for Asian food in the area, the options are limited and I would stop here again. read more

Always the best sushi in Ojai!!! Love Jay (the owner) and everything he makes is a piece of art, fresh, and so good! My personal favorites are his ebi sushi (shrimp) which are big, fresh and juicy unlike other sushi bars, and his SALMON SKIN HANDROLL, Albacore Tataki sushi, spicy scallop handroll, SALMON BELLY (soooo creamy and fresh, better than toro) and sunomono salad with tako (octopus)! read more
