Celebrated a birthday dinner here with 7 people and the service and food was amazing! Everyone in my party ordered a lot of sushi and sake and enjoyed it. I ordered their chicken teriyaki which comes with a salad, soup, rice and mixed tempura plate for $16.95. This is a ton of food to share or take 1/2 home. The restaurant even remembered it was dads birthday and brought out some delicious green tea ice cream and cake dessert. They turned off the lights and all the staff in the restaurant sang happy birthday. Everyone working here was so friendly and accommodating. They also take reservations which is great. I was bummed to get almost no service on Sunday. Was given a menu by hostess, server came and I ordered. Requested some extra ginger. Food was put on table without a word spoken. Almost no ginger, I was nor worried as I figured I'd ask during a check up. While eating I noticed the shrimp was shriveled up and a bit dry,but okay it's covid conditions so I understand. No follow up from server at all, never once stopped at my table. I was planning on ordering more sushi snf a drink when the server finally came over and dropped my bill on the table and said here's your bill. I felt uncared for as a customer and left still hungry. TOTAL FAIL! NOT RECOMMENDED! Disgusting dinner here 12/8/2019. We've been eating at Hakane for years, but never again. It's taken a sharp downhill slide beyond bad. I'm grateful we didn't order sushi, given our meal. The chicken teriyaki entrees were tough and mealy, the vegetables tasted off, tempura tasted of old cooking oil..... Miso soup was lukewarm and smelled fishy, ugh. I told the waiter frankly we were disappointed & disgusted, he actually agreed (!) but no one came to talk to us or apologize, nor did anyone offer to comp any of the food. In fact, the check overcharged for our beers, and we had to point it out and ask for it to be fixed (the waiter blamed the POS system - wait, what?) - and management still charged us full price for everything, even though we left 90% of our entrees on the plates. This was our first time at Hakane. We loved it! We liked that it's away from the hubbub section of Ojai Ave. Less cars, less congestion, easy parking. We sat outside, in the front of the restaurant. Perfectly shaded. It's got a good vibe inside and out. The waitress was very attentive, and happened to be a local, so I could reminisce about things in Ojai. I ordered the Omakase and it was very reasonably proced for an Omakase. The quality was very high in my opinion. Everything tasted very fresh: Uni, Spanish Mackrel, Scallop .... Delicious! My wife had a Ramen lunch plate with Gyoza and California Roll. They cooked the gyoza perfectly, the skin was lightly crisp along the edges. The Ramen was quite tasty. We will definitely be back for lunch next time we are in Ojai. read more

The portions were substantial to say the least. The edamame was a good size and so buttery. This is probably my new favorite place for a salmon skin roll because it was manageable! I ordered a spicy scallop handroll and the love love roll which has no rice. Out of the two, I really enjoyed the love love roll. It was tuna wrapped with spicy tuna, avocado, scallop and topped with a creamy sauce. The spicy scallop handroll had a little too much mayo for me but it still tasted fresh. I don't like sushi but my wife loves it so I never really went to many sushi places but my wife told me they had good chicken teriyaki so I chanced it. Long story short I've eaten there probably close to 5-6 times in the last 3 weeks. The chicken is tender and juicy and the sauce is amazing and I'm told all their Sauces are made in house. The rice was also nice and soft but not mushy which was a treat because most places have stale rice or undercooked in my experience. Noticed that they changed staff a lot recently but every time I've gone I was immediately seated, got my food fast and was well attended. I've been going to Hakane since they opened and have been within 10 minutes walking distance ever since. I'm an Ojai local and I like to stand up for the places I believe to be decent and bring my friends to. That said, this is the only place I've ever wanted to write a bad review for...ever. Technically, this is my first Yelp! review. Me and a few friends decided to go out on a double date. Our server was great, very quick, even let us know that if we were drinking, that we could wait for five minutes until Happy Hour. I ordered a Hot Night roll, some soup and a Sapporo. Not bad at all! ...I looked to my left. I swear on my Grandfathers grave, there was a rat from behind the booth corner,closest to the door by the street that hopped up on the table, jammed over to the one closest to us ( the one over, second to the other door) and sat in a kangaroo position. It was a GREY RAT WITH PINK EARS AND TAIL. IT RAN OVER TWO TABLES TO LOOK AT OUR FOOD. Don't get me wrong, I've bred rats when I was a kid, but this thing was one second from ON OUR TABLE?! So. We informed our waiter that there was a rat crawling behind the booth area. I couldn't stop trying to see if the head popped out again, so I brought my phone out and started recording the corner with the 'rat escape'. Apparently, now the Manager was paying attention, because she (10 minutes later) ran past me looking at the camera with a piece of paper. Not to block my camera, apparently to... catch a rat with? To make this long story short, I we were assured that it would be dealt with by morning. The tables WERE NEVER WIPED OFF. **DUDE, THEY NEVER WIPED THE TABLES OFF!** Well obviously this was taken care of. AFTER WE GOT OUR FULL BILL. And by taken care of, I mean that my friend asked if "...Do we get a Rattatoui discount?" ......We got %10 off. I'm never going back here, it's being reported to the health department, and it's officially the most disgusting place I've ever eaten... and I'm sickened to say how many times I'd eaten there before. read more

The sushi is great and I would recommend this to anyone. Dog friendly, Hakane Sushi has a wide, varied menu selection that was much to my taste from spicy, sweet, and savory! I'm not a fan of seaweed so I got soy paper. The paper is yellow but don't let that fool you! You won't even know it's there! The service was very fast, I would recommend the Rainbow Roll for it had several varied fish types, crab and avocado! I also ordered water for my dog, and it was here in seconds.
