We visited Ojai for my birthday and we were in town on a Monday night with no dinner plans. We settled on Hakane and headed over. They have a parking lot in the back which was super convenient. We didn't have a reservation but we were seated at a table immediately. The dining room is cozy and the decor is sophisticated, but not pretentious. Our server was friendly but not intrusive. We were a little hesitant about having sushi on a Monday but there was no reason. Everything was super fresh. Nothing fishy. We had 2 rolls, 3 sets of pieces, the gyoza, and the stuffed jalapeños. I had a craving for spicy tuna over crispy rice, so I asked our server if they could make some since I didn't see it on the menu. They did and it was 10 out of 10. I would say the portion sizes are pretty generous. The individual pieces of sushi were more like the size of 2 I'm most other restaurants. If I could offer one suggestion it would be to go a bit easier on the sauce for the rolls. Let the flavor of the food be the star. read more

My guess is that it's hard to have a successful sushi establishment in Ojai, maybe I'm wrong, but that's what my gut tells me. But when I walked in and saw the sushi chef and I watched him walk over a plate of sushi with dedicated care and pride in his work, I was already interested. The place is small and quaint. Not flashy. And Yelp has a different address for this place and it was only an accident we found it. But glad we did!! The sushi was excellent and we got 4 rolls and some sushi and were pleased with everything! Fresh fish and great flavor. Staff was friendly. Recently, we lost our favorite sushi place that was actually quite a ways away from the valley. So we decided we've tried every sushi place in town except this location. My memory served me that it used to be further down next to the golf course, but come to find out it moved. Pretty cool setting its bamboo trees and the ambience is kind of nice. The food was really good. Fresh and portions were very nice. The service was pretty good overall. Pricing was maybe on the higher side, but nevertheless the food was delicious. The chicken karage was gelatinous, barely edible. I came back from a hike and I was so hungry but this made it worse. Even the rice wasn't good. The service was not super good either. The sushi was good and the prices were very reasonable. However, the service could use some improvement. For a place this size, two waiters should be enough, but that didn't seem to be the case. The water cups are small, and don't expect your server to check in very often. The other waiter only tended to her own tables, so I ended up getting up to refill my own water. Family / friends and I have been going here at least once a month for the past two years. Sushi is always very good and the service has always been fine. Cut to lunch time this past Memorial day. 8 of us were the first to be sat when they opened. Had to ask for water / drinks / waiter to take our food choices (it's an all you can eat deal). First round eventually arrived and we had our second round already noted on the order sheet. No one picked it up until ONE HOUR LATER!! I couldn't get anyone to help us. I got up and handed the order sheet to the hostess. Eventually round 2 was delivered but no one refilled waters / asked for more drinks nor took away the pile of empty serving plates. I had to take the empty plates to the hostess again. After close to 2 hours we'd had enough and I went to let the hostess to send over the manager so that I could discuss the horrific service...no one showed up. I went back to the hostess to get my bill. Of course they added 18% gratuity to the bill for the 8 of us. Will we be back? Not sure. read more

The sign for parking is hard to see and they need flags or something to lower people in the food was over the top great very authentic.Loco moco I was confused about their hours. Seems to be printed differently on different signs. We went for brunch, but it doesn't open till 11 and we were the only ones in the restaurant. I hope they make it at this location because the food is too good to miss. The only reason I gave four stars was about the posted hours the parking sign and the lack of invitation to come to the restaurant meeting banners or flags. They need something. I came to Hakane on a Friday night, it was super busy, my friends and I waited for 30 mins to be seated. The ambiance was hectic and chaotic, the atmosphere and people working there seemed really stressed and understaffed. Thankfully the food made up for the service. My food was served hot and I highly recommend the Korean Beef Bulgogi if you're looking for a hot tasty plate. It also comes with a side salad, rice, and miso soup. They forgot to bring us menus and my friend did not get her food with us and when she got it her food was not hot. We had to constantly remind our waiter for menus, food, and condiments. I gave a 3/5, hopefully it was just a rough night and next time will be a better overall experience. read more

Everything we ordered was delicious and fresh: Tempura calamari - good 4/5 Albacore Tataki roll $12.95 - very good 5/5 (Seared albacore tuna, cucumber, avocado rolled in rice & topped with albacore tuna, avocado, onion, garlic chip, drizzled over with a garlic ponzu sauce) Baked Salmon roll $11.95- very good 5/5 (Imitation crab meat, avocado, cucumber rolled in rice & topped with baked salmon, masago, drizzled with eel sauce) Westmoreland roll $11.95 - good 4/5 (Imitation crab meat, avocado, rolled in rice & topped with salmon and deep fried, drizzled over with eel sauce) Each roll is 12 pieces and I really like how they cut the rolls thin which makes is manageable to eat and fit in your mouth. Stopped in here for dinner while I was spending a weekend in Ojai. We called ahead to reserve a table at around 6 for 6.30. The parking is kind of tricky, there's a tiny lot behind, but we ended up parking on the street a block or so away. Most spots on the street are free for 2 hours until 6pm, IIRC. It's a cosy wee spot, there are a few 2-tops and 4-tops inside and they were also seating on the back patio, though I didn't see it. The servers were very accommodating and got us seated right away. They were definitely rushed off their feet, so waiting to get their attention took awhile at points, but they were doing their best. Everything we had was very good, we had a couple of specials, a bunch of nigiri, and a roll. The roll was very small with lots of pieces. All the classic nigiri pieces were good, we got our usual selection of albacore, yellowtail, salmon, scallop and shrimp. Everything was on the colder side, though, more chilled than I'm used to. I think this is just a preference thing, but it did mean that the fattier cuts we ordered didn't melt in the mouth. The oyster in the oyster shooter I got was also still quite frozen in the middle. Nevertheless, it was all well presented and I enjoyed the little additions like a dab of a wasabi-based sauce on the scallop. Recommended. read more

*Note, the entrance is on the side of the parking lot opposite of the street.* Came early at 5 o'clock on a Thursday and we were the first in the restaurant, and the crowd started to arrive around 6, but it has a nice cozy ambiance and decor. The staff were ready and very helpful. I was visiting with my partner from San Francisco and unfamiliar with the menu, but looking for some sushi, so we got some recommendations from our waiter on popular special rolls to get. My partner and I both got the nigiri sushi gozen which each come with a special roll, but we wanted to try more, so we ultimately tried the baked lobster, firecracker, lemon flush, and pacific special rolls, all of which we opted for real crab meat. They were fabulous. My favorite was the lemon flush because of the very delightful and refreshing flavors while my partner's favorite was the pacific roll with the coconut shrimp. To be clear, I also loved the baked lobster roll which was a delicious baked roll and definitely recommend for those who enjoy a warm roll, and I enjoyed even more our firecracker roll. With the gozen, we got tasty nigiri sushi as well as delightful tempura, a great seaweed and cucumber salad, and nice warm miso soup. We weren't able to finish all of the tempura or salad with all the food, but not because we didn't enjoy them. We also got the sake flight with 4 kinds of sake. My partner and I chose different ones as our favorites for slightly different notes, with her preferring a slightly sweeter sake, but they were all worth buying a bottle of to take home.
