My family has loved going here for years, and I can see why. Everyone was passionate, positive, and knew their stuff. They handled men's haircuts well for a reasonable price and knew the style I was asking for despite not personally being a regular. It was easy to chat with the stylists, and I could talk about the style decisions without feeling rushed. I only come by once a year these days, but I can still rely on this place to consistently get a good haircut, so it doesn't get much better than that! My parents don't write reviews, but they love going here. When my mom visited, she thanked her stylist with some of her homemade cookies. That is her way of leaving a 5-star review. I had never had this done and knew nothing about it. When I went to appt, I learned she'd quit. Scheduled with another stylist & owner agreed to the price the previous stylist had quoted me. First I went to the new stylist for a cut, and then scheduled the money piece 2 weeks later. I told her I'd timed the money piece perfectly, because I was going to visit my daughter and wanted my hair to look nice. I told her I wanted to make sure the appointment went smoothly, so we went over the details. I spoke with stylist about the price adjustment (which I was told by receptionist was only $10 cheaper). Stylist flew off the handle. She said to do a money piece, my hair needed 7 foils, and quoted me a price that was double the amount. The receptionist then told stylist the owner agreed to it and stylist angrily blurted out, "Elaine (owner) better pay me my full commission on this!" I was mortified. Stylist told me that some stylists get paid hourly but she gets a percentage of the cost of the service. I shrunk, and left apologizing, saying I didn't know about commissions (and planned to tip her very heavily to make up for it). I was assured everything was all set. (note: due to her appallingly unprofessional behavior, I had already decided that after my money piece, I would not return to the this stylist). I showed up 2 weeks later for my money piece and stylist immediately said, "So we're doing just the 3 foils today?" I was confused and corrected that she had said my hair would take 7 foils. " She said, "I know I said 7 but you booked it for only 3 foils, and I don't have time to do 7." Of course, no customer calls in and says "I'd like to make an appointment for 3 foils (what customer speaks in foils???)." It never happened. It was clear the appointment was for the 7 foils and she was not only there, but a participant. And she was WELL aware that I'd timed this just before my trip to see my daughter. She clearly planned this charade pretending I'd "booked it for 3 foils" because she was worried about getting her commission. Of course I wasn't going to have only half my hair done. I got up, in a daze, and started to leave, holding back tears. (I had also taken an hour out of my day to drive there and back, and this salon cost me $10 in gas money). On my way out, I last remember her face right in mine, gritting her teeth and ANGRILY barking at me, "Have a nice day!" (MEAN, as though I had somehow done something to deserve her anger). I had been nothing but polite and friendly to her. Yet, she had intentionally put me in this position, worried about her commission. I went to my car shaking and sat there crying. My hair would not be done for the visit to my daughter. I left messages for the owner, but she never returned them. I messaged through FB asking if the owner was going to return my calls. Instead, the district manager messaged me back (at 10pm!) stating she "knew the whole story", that the stylist had immediately gone to her office and explained what happened (of course it was fiction--as the stylist tried to preempt a call from a distraught customer), and manager said she's "known the stylist for years" and "trusts her"; therefore, didn't bother asking me, the customer, what had happened. Manager then began a defense of stylist while spewing a story that was completely foreign to me, because it wasn't what happened. read more

I have had all the girls color my hair, my hair makes it difficult as it's dark brown, and I have them bleach to white. and the cut they give me is always my favorite cut each time I leave. I am so regretful about my decision to try out the Hairzoo on Empire Boulevard in Webster, NY. Out of decency, I am not going to name my colorist. My honest intent of this review is to save somebody else the upset of the troubling experience I went through. My highlight did not come out as anticipated, so I went back in for a quick "adjustment" toner. Unfortunately, my hair turned very brassy-orange hued from the toner. When I called my colorist (holding back tears) she apologized and told me there was simply nothing more she could do. To add insult to injury, the salon operations manager went so far as to accuse ME of selecting the brassy-orange hued toner. Why on earth would a person who wanted a cool-icy toned highlight pick out a warm-orange toner?? Although specific pricing was discussed in detail prior to my service, I have been told repeatedly that I am at fault due to my limited budget. Talk about penny wise pound foolish, I now have to spend a lot of money on corrective color services at another salon. More than anything else, I am surprised and incredibly disappointed by the lack of empathy and support that I received from the Hairzoo corporate operations manager. Sadly, I genuinely expected a much higher standard of customer care from this establishment. Live and learn I suppose. read more

I normally try not to write a bad review about a place unless I've been there more than once but I was so disappointed with my recent experience here that I needed to sound off because it was a hot mess. I had an appointment for a cut and color with Cheryl (DO NOT GO TO HER) and she was very terse and cold when I first saw her. For starters, I told her I just wanted to get my split ends cut and my hair colored over to get the burgundy color out (I normally just dye it a single, permanent color that is dark brown/black). Instead of listening to me, she insisted I just needed a filler but would probably need to come back for a second appointment. Normally when I get my hair done, I am shown a color palette and select how dark I would like to go, but there was none of that here. She informed me the price would be $80+ accounting for the length of my hair requiring additional dye but I could purchase the color package for $120 which would include a blow dry and styling. I declined as I do not understand why I need to pay an extra $40 to get a blow dry when I'm getting my hair colored or to account for extra hair dye when I'm getting inches of dead ends cut off to begin with. She did offer me a beverage but was very curt otherwise. Anytime I moved a smidge or checked messages on my phone, she constantly kept reminding me she would not be held accountable if dye gets on me. She informed me that I should not wash my hair much for the next week or the color would fade. I was confused, did she use a semi-permanent tint on me when I really wanted a single color? I waited a half hour for my color to set it and during this time, I overheard her talking to another stylist about me, telling them I wasn't social. Of course I'm not social, you're rude af. To be fair, I can be very transactional when I get my hair done because I just want to relax, but her behavior was very unprofessional and did not take into account that every client is different. She tried to show nuggets of being nice (when I was getting closer to pay) and do small talk but it was honestly too little, too late. Then after washing the color out of my hair, before she cut my hair, she told me to grab my stuff and go to another room. I clearly struggled with putting my stuff on the hook that was there and she offered no assistance whatsoever to move it to a more suitable place. She proceeded to cut my hair, then blow dried my hair a little so I wouldn't walk out with my head ALL wet. Needless to say, I paid $97 (before tip, $115 after tip, because I am still a nice person and know I will NOT return ever) to walk out with a half wet head (I finished blow drying my hair at home, thanks), hair I can barely shampoo until after a week or the color will fade and which the color could overrun on my pillows and clothes, and when I got home, I noticed dye on my face and ears that she clearly did not try hard enough to scrub off (photos attached). Sometimes, I go to Larijames in Webster and I pay a lot less for a lot more in terms of customer service and overall quality - I regret giving Hairzoo a chance. I would not recommend Cheryl to anyone and will never return to Hairzoo. read more

I always go for just a cut and have had decent enough experiences but the last few times I was there I felt like my cut was rushed and the very last time I was there she didn't even wet my hair for the cut....I have tried to work with the cut I got but it is pretty unmanageable this time and will have to find someone to fix my hair cut....This is with me scheduling my apt as well...The girl I was scheduled with was still on lunch when I got there and my apt was not on time...she also had someone waiting for her behind me...maybe that was the rush...maybe they should look at how they are scheduling people and if enough time is being allowed for hair cuts...and make sure you are not scheduling people during some ones lunch! read more

I have to say that this salon is very unprofessional. I took my young son in for a haircut and I was embarrassed to have even gone there. The girls were all dressed very inappropriately to be working with the public. Since I am a mom on a tight schedule- we stayed for the cut. While he was in the chair, all the girls around him were talking about how they spent their evenings going clubbing etc and talking about men problems. This is not professional in any way. Especially in front of a young child. Happy with the cut but disappointed in the workers behavior. read more

In response to hair zoo.... The time to "ensure customer satisfaction", and to offer to correct the situation was when I went back the following day, NOT after I left a bad review! Why would I give you a third chance to further mess up my hair? It would probably fall out after being colored 3 times in a week! And worse yet, you would probably charge me once again to do it. I believe in second chances, but you had yours and blew it. I stand by my bad review, and feel that you've more than earned it. Not only was your provided service horrible. After my fiasco with Shannon, I spoke with Elaine and she had her Manager Jenn look at my hair. Jenn took over after many pictures she took to show Elaine. Jenn repaired my color and was able to stack the back. It will take months to grow out the sides, I still look better than I did after Shannon ruined my hair. I plan on going back to Jenn. read more

I hadn't had a hair cut since my baby was born over 6months ago, and wanted a new style, something other than my usual "throw it up into a bun" look. Ryli was a great listener during my consultation to make sure I would leave a happy client. Made appoint with Kay since she had great reviews. Got in there a few minutes early and she saw me right away. She spent 15 minutes for a haircut and 5 minutes of it was talking with me about what I wanted. I told her to cut my hair as the way it grows and use her stylist eyes to decide what would look best on me. I must admit, though I don't like to do this, that the haircut was very very bad and disappointing to me. It was many years since I went to a salon for a haircut and I understand why. When I got home I ended up doing further trimming on my hair. This should never be the way it is. Needless to say, be very careful when reading these types of reviews. Upon further review - this has to be the absolute worst haircut I have had in 20 years. Keep in mind that I asked her to do what she thought would look best. i got my hair butchered at the hair zoo in Newark,n.y. and the manager covered up for her stylist by telling me she was having some family medical problems!! I contacted the Webster office for a refund! They told me the Newark manager said i was happy when i left the salon. Which was a lie because i went back after the cut and the manager tried to fix it! They are so desperate for money they refuse to give me a refund!! I had a witness with me! I am taking this matter a few steps further! i want my money back! I had long hair and now i have a short uneven half bob that is only one inch short all down the back of my head! Absolutely terrible. I went in there for a wash cut and blow. I have thick hair and I asked for it to be blow dried. She asked me if I wanted it left curly and I specifically said no, I want it blow dried. She started blow drying it and I noticed that she was taking huge pieces of my hair and just blow drying it without the nozzle on the hairdryer, so my hair wasn't getting straight, just dry and very bushy. I didn't say anything thinking she would fix it later, but then why she had 'finished' it all and started applying the finishing product I couldn't believe that she would send me out looking like that! I was so angry, I couldn't even say anything and besides I didn't want her to continue. She was friendly enough and perhaps she is good with others, but they were very busy that day and I felt like my hairdo was being rushed. Even the haircut was bad because she trimmed my ends but my hair is layered so she didn't even attempt to cut those ends. So now I have trimmed bottom ends but the rest is dry and split as it was when I walked in. For $35 I expect more. I had to go home and fix my own hair! Not what you want to do after coming from a salon. So disappointed and never going back! read more

I have to say i love writing reviews for good service and the bad and in this case creepy. I have been in the hair zoo empire several times and spent way too much for being watched by incognito cameras. i noticed that in this salon there are ceiling cameras placed randomly throughout the bldg. I found out recently the owner Gary has a not such an innocent history with the young girls and this is fact in public records now that I researched. I was concerned with the one camera perfectly placed right over the sink where I get my hair washed. Hoping it wasn't what i thought, I asked the stylist what that was and she said a camera, we are watched and the owners have a tv upstairs to monitor the customers and the staff. for what I can't figure out, but can only imagine. I felt totally violated as i am getting my hair washed and my eyes are closed and i am trying to relax i have someone watching me. NO thanks!. Seriously I am all for using a camera for security at the back door, front entrance and stations where money is handled but not at hair wash stations and cutting coloring areas??? Is there some peep hole in the rest room as well that we can't see? I read the review previous that of course was there lol referencing a prior bad review and looked for IT but it was not there, not a surprise the negative one was deleted. If one of you read this I got the message across and am satisfied. word of mouth is the best advertisement and I have lots of contacts so you may be working harder at the empire location. :) I will not be returning to be watched and creeped out by the owners & whoever else is upstairs in the "office" doing whatever you do there while i am sopposed to be relaxing as a paying guest. I am wondering if this goes on at the other hair zoo locations as well?? regarding my son and fiancé haircuts on Sunday January 25,2015. Both of there haircuts are awful. Not blended at all lines are way to low around the head neck lines crooked. Top was cut with scissors very choppy and uneven. Can see the lines from the stylist fingers. A patch off long hair was left around the neck. When they both were done they were COVERED in hair they never took the time to actually wipe the hair off there necks or face. I had to do it in the waiting area. The stylists were both very nice. Just the worst haircuts I have ever see in my life. I was a stylists for 10 years,and a manager of a salon for 8 I chose not to cut there hair this wkend to save me time. Instead I had to fix it along with pay 25$ for 2 haircuts plus 5$ tip for both girls total of 35$. I had the worst hair cut !! I went in with hair below my shoulders. The girl that cut it was what I thought was the receptionist. She said she fills in when it's busy. I told her I want 1-2 inches cut off. My hair is very curly and I don't want it short. I wondered why all of a sudden she had me stand up and finished cutting it standing up away from the mirror. I told her I like to put it in a pony tail when it's hot out. She put my WET hair in a pony tail. I just wanted to get out and see what went wrong. Well, my long hair is cut at CHIN length !! I look like someone put a bowl on my head and cut it. Now I have to go to a REAL hair dresser to fix this. She cut 5-6 inches off. !!! read more

This location is very convenient to my house, so I've been there a few times but would never go for a complex cut. The last time I went was a truly awful experience. They had a new person (Kristen is what my receipt says) working on a Saturday. She kept pulling people away because she didn't know how to use the register or where things were or, most importantly, HOW TO CUT HAIR! She caused other stylists to take longer because she kept pulling them away to help her cut hair (basic men's cuts). I have no idea why they had her working on a busy Saturday! There were at least 5 people working, so I waited 40 min (even though they said 20 when I came in). Of course I got her and nobody else was close to ready and I needed my hair cut. I am not high maintence about my hair, but I gave her very simple instructions on what I wanted (hair completely off the back of my neck, about half an inch off all around. Keep the layers..etc.) and didn't get it at all. I felt like she didn't understand what I was saying. This was especially disappointing because the haircut before this one was the best I'd ever had (that stylist has since left and wouldn't tell me where she was going, or else I would have followed her). Friends told me to go back, but I think it's so irresponsible to have a new person who clearly doesn't know how to cut hair working on a Saturday and taking up everyone else's time that I will just go elsewhere from now on. read more

I've been going to this hair zoo for a long, long time and no I don't go every 6 weeks but enough to notice that they are slowly going down hill. I just wanted a wash + trim. It was a Thursday and only 2 people waiting, myself included that took 15 mins. OK fine, finally they call me up an I tell the lady what I want. We get over to her table and start the cutting of my hair and I start to notice she isn't paying as much attention to the left side as the right side of my head. I don't think to much into it cause I figure she knows what she was doing till she says "finished" and I go wait I wanted an can u cut so I have layers in front? she did and I was okay with the hair cut but I noticed through the whole hair cutting process she wasn't paying attention or was nervous maybe. I get home and brush my hair and measure it out myself and like I kind a figured the left side is longer then the right, so I cut my own hair to even it out. I'm not one to complain at all cause I know how some clients can be but for me to have to come home an cut my own hair to even it out, is not okay!
