But as someone who knows how hard it is to find the perfect salon, I knew it was important to let the community know about a little salon in Fairport. I have had the worst luck with salons in the past. I've never stayed in one place for longer than five years as an adult. The closest I got to that was the salon I went to in middle school and high school, where my mom and sister went as well. But that ended ten days before my high school graduation, where my request to have my hair "just dusting my shoulders" resulted in a chin length blunt bob that poofed out when dry, making me look like a mushroom wearing a graduation cap. As I was stylistically challenged (and still am, to a good extent), you can imagine how well this worked out for me. I bounced around from one fancy salon to the next in college, coming home on breaks for haircuts and not having any idea how to maintain my new look. I started going to Cuts International a solid two years before I moved back to Rochester, and I'm proud to say that it's my longest salon relationship ever. Ever since I started seeing Amelia for my hair needs, I have walked away happy and confident that I can replicate what was done to me during the styling process. Amelia is very intuitive and knows what will work for me and what won't. Last year I decided I wanted highlights to camouflage the increasing number of gray hairs and she helped me pick out a color that would look good against my dark hair and would mask the grays as best we could. Instead of the traditional foil method, she used a plastic hat to pull small strands through to ensure a natural look. While this was going on, I looked just like Gollum, if Gollum were waiting to rinse out his new highlights. Everyone at the salon is friendly and enthusiastic about their clients and what they can do. Whenever I have an appointment, it's like walking into a family reunion or happy hour at Cheers. I've never once felt like a transaction here, and I have definitely felt that way at other salons. Cuts International is not only a family salon, but one that really takes the idea of family to heart. Finally, where else can you get a fancy salon quality cut and style for $26? I used to pay twice as much for other salons in the past and I'm never going to go back. You can try to entice me with fancy furniture and decor and the privilege of saying I go to your salon, but it won't work. I'm sticking with Cuts International, where I know I can maintain my new look with my meager styling skills.

Their website is a bit 1990's so don't let that dissuade you. I made an appt with Lory Aponte a few days ahead of time for an express hair cut and a groom with razor finish. I get a buzz cut but keep a full beard and have learned not to try to maintain it on my own. Just not a skill I have. This spot is tiny, four chairs and 2 for hair wash. Not much character to the place really. Pros, super comfy chairs. I'm a big dude and usually a barbers chair is a squeeze for me, these were nice. My $30 service which it said would take an hour only took my 40 minutes, it did not include a hair wash that may come with the $35 option. I did miss sitting in a massage chair with a scalp massage, so Mens club gets a point there. Lory was great, she was very intense and focused on what she was doing. She definitely came off as an expert and she did a good job. A buzz cut is pretty simple. My beard I tend to give more freedom to the barber as they are the expert. I tell them shorter by x amount and clean up\even up sides edges tops and bottoms. Lory did an ok job on the beard, not a good as my usual barber but pretty close. I'd say she made it a little less edgy then he does. It was a few bucks cheaper and over all a good experience, not sure I have found a new barber YET but I will probably give them another try.

I went crawling back to Austen and he said that the other stylist had bleached my hair which they don't do. He tamed my highlights back to the honey blond color I prefer and gave me truly full highlights (not hit or miss). Austen also does a great job with my cuts. My hair has been getting longer since I started seeing him, and he always gets it back into shape without cutting it too short. I had previously thought that my hair would be straggly if it got too long, but Austen proved that it all depends on how it's cut, as it looks great at the longer length with his cuts. His styling is beautiful and his prices are still reasonable. Plus Austen has a British accent which is always enjoyable to hear. Several win-wins!!

They saw me and didn't say a thing. If this place doesn't take walk-ins, they need a sign that says so. If they DO take walk-ins, then their customer service absolutely sucks. No matter what kind of business it is, a greeting of every customer walking through that door is normal. 15 minutes of time wasted just sitting there.
