10/10 service. Michelle just did my hair and I must say , I never trust anyone touching my natural curly hair but she slayed it soooo hard. Cannot wait to come back to her for something else but I highly recommend her for curly/textured hair!!!!! read more

As the type of person who typically just trims her own hair when the split ends get to be too obvious, I barely ever get haircuts. However, a few months ago I realized some professional help was necessary. I hadn't gone to a salon since I moved to the area, and found Hair Co. on Yelp by it's favorable reviews. The fact that it's 2 blocks from my house didn't hurt either. I called to make an appointment, and the girl asked how I heard about them. When I told her it was from Yelp, she informed me that the hairdresser everyone raves about (Jody) was on vacation, so she would be happy to schedule me for an appointment when she was back in 2 weeks, or she could give me an appointment at my requested time with the other stylist (her). My split ends were screaming at this point, so I decided to take the risk and go with the un-Yelped-about hairdresser. When I arrived for my appointment, I was the second customer in the small salon. The space is no-frills and has a neighborhood feel. The female stylist (sorry I don't remember her name!) was very friendly and told me about growing up in the area. She washed my hair and seemed to really listen and care about how I wanted it cut. She started out by snipping off a few inches and then added layers. I found that the layers weren't short enough, and she was happy to add more when I mentioned this. When she was done snipping, she mentioned that each haircut includes styling, as they want to see how the finished product will look. My hair is curly, so it was a nice treat to have it blow-dried straight. I looked pretty great, if I do say so myself! She also let me know that if I wash and style it my way and something is off, I can always come back and have her fix it free of charge. Curly hair can have a mind of its own, so this is great to hear since you never know how things will look in a few days. Luckily I didn't even need to return because the cut looked great both ways! I found $40 for a wash, solid haircut, and style to be very reasonable! I'm curious about the cut the raved-about Jody would have given me, but I'm still glad I took the risk and visited Hair Co when I did. I'll back back in a few years (only slightly kidding) when I find I need my next haircut! read more

I first got my hair cut with Jodi and Michelle over six years ago when I first moved to Boston, and I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. Jodi gives a killer, low maintenance & beautiful haircut and is really thoughtful and patient to give me a cut that works for ME (since - let's be honest - I'm never going to take the time to style it in the morning). She's worked with me to grow it out long and healthy, and also to brave up to cutting a lot of it off into a shorter, angled bob that had strangers stopping me and asking who cuts my hair. Bonus that both Jodi and Michelle are lovely and fun, plus super flexible to fit you in last minute. Put yourself in good hands, and go see these awesome ladies! read more

Jody at Hair Co is amazing - she listens and then energetically and enthusiastically gives you what you asked for, and more! I am always pleased with the results. She makes it relaxing and fun! I like my haircut to look natural/classic, be easy to care for, and look good for many, many weeks, and Jody makes it happen! Check out Hair Co for your next cut and color, and check out the waxing - my eyebrows never looked so good! read more

As per usual, I've waited a couple of days to write my review in order to gauge my actual disgust...so here's the thing, I won't go back and the main reason is Jodi, not the actual haircut I received at Hair Co. A co-worker of mine recently went to Hair Co. and came back with a nice cut so I thought I'd try it out. I have layers which no one in Boston can cut, for some reason, and I've been looking for a solid place since moving here 4 years ago. (Seriously.) I was warned that Jodi was a little...odd in a new-agey kind of way but that she was nice. The minute I walked in, I knew I was in for a...treat? She said, "The universe wants us to be together." Um...OK... So she evaluates my hair and decides to cut it dry. She also tells me that she doesn't cut everyone's hair like this-just mine-because my hair is different from everyone else's. FYI-my hair is straight/wavy, medium weight and well, not extraordinary. Anyway...she then called her apprentice over to show her how she was cutting my hair. Immediately, I knew this meant she was going to charge me more. Great... So the haircut took about 40 minutes. This is mainly due to the fact that while cutting my hair Jodi flitted around to other customers chatting and more notably taking her cell phone and showing it to everyone because her ex-boyfriend just called her and she "couldn't believe it!". I'd say a good 15 minutes total was taken away from my haircut because of her chatting with others. I mention this because after my cut was done, she DIDN'T WASH OR STYLE MY HAIR. Pissed doesn't even begin to describe how angry I was. She said she didn't have time to wash or style my hair because it took longer than she expected. Her apprentice couldn't do it either and asked if I could come back in 45 minutes!! FYI-I had an appointment and was not just some walk in customer. When I told her I was expecting a wash and dry she actually asked me to come back THE NEXT DAY. Seriously lady? I HAD AN APPOINTMENT!! I don't like confrontation though, so I just told her that I couldn't come back and I was disappointed because I was going out. She then had the balls to charge me $65 for a dry cut, bad company and childish 'OMG he called me!" behavior. For that kind of money, I could have easily gone to another (cleaner, saner, more luxurious) salon, not one in a mall with a crowded, unorganized space. Steer clear-Jodi's nice but for the price, you can find a place with less drama. L.H. is totally right when she said that Jodi tries too hard. read more

First, I am half black + half Italian = one FULL, THICK head of hair. I have to get my hair relaxed every 5 weeks. With that said, I have always gone to black ladies (and two black guys) to get my hair done...well things are never the same here in Boston. Jody is white, and does black relaxers DAMN well. Here is why: 1) She is prompt. My appt was at 4. She was ready for me at 4 (that gets 5* already - she really would have had to screw up for me to go down) 2) She basted my head well - I workout everyday and am not the most careful about not scratching 3) Good product - I usually use Mizani, but whatever works is good to me 4) She looked at my hair and worked well. She asked me where my hair grows the fastest (of course after 20 years of getting my hair relaxed I know this answer) 5) She rewashed b/c the product was not out, plus I have a dry scalp so THANK YOU for taking the time to do it right (even if it was the second time) 6) um...ever had a wet-to-dry flat iron used on you? I HATE the blow drying portion of the visit...there was like 10 mins total and my hair was straight and shiny from the chi flat iron. That should be enough for you to trust that she does good work, but to top it off, she wrote notes and I schedule with her for next week wash. I am done doing my own hair for a few months at least. Oh and the final reason I say go here, she is going to teach me to wrap my hair...yes I know I SHOULD wrap it, but I never learned, nor do I really want to, so I am going to show her what I look like tomorrow after sleeping without wrapping. So go visit her, she is expensive, but worth it. $130 for relaxer and flat iron. read more

I've frequented many a hairdresser, and never have I had the "loyalty" to a hairdresser that Jody inspires. She's never steered me wrong, or ceased to be a good time. She has a strong vision for hair, and I show up, and pretty much let her do whatever she likes. This arrangement works brilliantly for me, but if you have a solid idea of what you want, she might not be the best one for you. But every cut she's done has been lovely, and a good fit for the person getting the cut. I love the creative application, with out all the general hauty-ness of hipper-than-thou salons is very welcome. And the price is pretty good as well! read more

I have to agree with every last person who bought the Groupon. DON'T DO IT! Thank god I got the extra 20% off with Groupon because if I had spent any more on this atrocious mani/pedi, I would have been seriously (even more) upset--not only that, but apparently for a full price mani/pedi, it's upwards of $70!! I mean that is insanity. Don't believe me? Head to Hair Co and try it for yourself. Anyway, remember back in the day when you and your friends would have sleepovers and paint each others' nails? And maybe if you were super cool, you had one of those Homedics pedicure tub that plugged into the wall and "bubbled?" Well if you get this Groupon, you will be welcomed with a blast to the past, because that's what your pretty little toes get pampered with. Combine that with relatively uncomfortable folding chair, and you' Seriously, you ask? Yes. Seriously. As Abby G. said, "if it wasn't so pathetic, it would have been funny." Instead, it was just sad. Clearly the girl who did the mani/pedi didn't have much control over the situation, as she was very pleasant and probably did the best job she could given the circumstances. That being said, there was a very small selection of nail colors, she answered the phone a number of times while I was getting my nails done and then completed the job by blow drying my nails. Then, no fewer than 5 minutes after I left, did my toes smudge! Needless to say, this was not a stellar experience. read more

Great haircuts, but expensive and you have to put up with an eccentric personality. Jody is fun, a loud person w/ a huge personality. I liked them at first, but I don't get my hair cut very often. After a while though, they started treating me differently, and I caught some insinuations that it was because I didn't go often enough. Maybe they were just in moods. The same thing happened to my wife though, b/c she colored her own hair at home...the last time she was there, another customer told my wife "I love your hair color", and Jody said "Really?!?". -- Rude. So we found Hair International on Mass ave instead -- inexpensive, great haircuts and genuinely nice people. read more

You know that worst part about going to the salon - getting your hair cut and styled and then knowing that the next time you wash it and dry it yourself, it will look nothing like that - well Jody, the master stylist at Hair Co., makes sure that never happens. Jody listened carefully to what I like and don't like to do with my hair, and combined that with her own advice. She cut quickly and masterfully, without fussing with various products. The cut came out looking natural and perfect for my face shape. She then told me that after I wash and dry it myself, if there was anything I did not like, to come back and she would augment it for free. Well the next day I washed it and dried it very haphazardly, but it still fell into its place and looked wonderful. She was also really fun to chat with and quickly put me at ease. I will definitely be a regular at Hair Co. with Jody and highly recommend you try her as well. read more

Do not buy groupon to try the mani/pedi at this place. I was really excited to try this place and in fact, I bought 2 mani/pedi thinking it's awesome that I get to go there twice. Man, was I wrong. This place is so bad that I rather write this review than going back for my second mani pedi. 1. NOT clean. Nowadays, most places you go to, has one set of tools per customer. Not this place, same set of tools for everyone. And the buffer looks so old and dinky. 2. This place is NOT set up or equipped to do nails. For pedi, they use one those little machine that you would use at home for DiY. Never mind the comfortable chair or strong jets. 3. I asked the person not to push my cuticles in my fingernails, she then completely did not trim the sides of my cuticles and completely did nothing to my toe nails. She just filed them and moved on. 4. She did not apply a base coat (which I thought is a standard practice) or second layer of my chosen polish. 5. Once I'm done, they don't even have a dryer thing to dry my nails. So including making me sit in a small DIY pedi machine for like 15 min, the whole thing took less than an hour.... It's just ridiculous and basically she spent no time on me. 6. The Groupon was advertised as organic. I'm not sure what's so organic about it. Not organic polish and as far as I can tell, I don't think the lotion is organic either. I gave this place two starts because she was not chatty. But even that's really being generous. DO NOT go there for mani/pedi. And honestly, this salon has no business to be in the nail business. read more

I like Jodi a lot. She's really good both with the "hey, you're the expert, you figure out what to do with it" instructions and with the very particular, bordering on neurotic instructions. (I've gone with a friend before.) The highlights are a little more than I like to spend, but maybe that's just the way it is in Boston. I don't go anywhere else. read more

I am writing this review based on the Brazilian wax. They do not have an experienced technician who does Brazilian waxes. The service took a painful 1 and a half hour!! Longest Brazilian of my life. On top of that, the technician was not trained in the skills of a proper brazilian wax, and so it was VERY painful. I almost walked out sooner because I could not bare the pain. I can't speak to other services, but I am disappointed that they offer a service for which they do not have a properly trained technician. read more

I wish I could give 4.5 stars, but I cannot give a perfect 5. However, I am a fan and will return to this place. My experience was great. Ashley is a junior stylist in the salon and is very friendly, cute and fun to talk to. She listened carefully about what I wanted and explained to me how she intended to go about it before starting. She worked meticulously and I am happy with the outcome. The one complaint I have is that she did a very poor job of protecting me from getting hair clippings all down my shirt so that I would not be itchy all day; I ended up being forced to go home early instead of run errands because I had to take a shower. All in all, I am happy and will be a returning customer. read more

DO NOT BUY A GROUPON FOR A MANI/PEDI! Sometimes, Groupon purchases can be a complete waste of time and money, and this was one of them. The girl who performs the mani/Pedis seems pleasant, but her boss should be ashamed of herself. First of all, like Jasmine C. wrote, my experience was similar. This place is comprised of a small-ish room that is dirty, old, and tastelessly decorated. There are a couple of salon chairs with a small desk set up in front where one mani/pedi can be performed at a time. The young lady giving my manicure seemed to take her time and did the best she could. It was non-lasting and smudged shortly after I left. Once my manicure was finished (nothing organic was used, as advertised, btw), the young lady began preparations for the pedicure. To my shock, she returned with something that looked purchased from a yard sale, an older modeled foot whirlpool that plugs into the wall. (Yes, the plastic kind you buy at Walgreens). If it wasn't so pathetic, it would have been funny. I could really go on much more, but, suffice to say, this was by far, the worst mani/pedi I have ever received. If you do go, don't say I didn't warn you! read more

What is better than one awesome stylist? Two awesome stylists! Honestly Jody and Alicia work together as master and apprentice to treat you (me) like a queen. My hair was WRECKED by my last stylist. I had at least five colors streaming through my locks. There was blonde, blonder, pink, red, and my natural ikky brown. Alicia and Jody bounced ideas off each other and took the time to think about how to best fix my hair, the way I wanted it and for a decent price. I left feeling sexy with my hair bouncing about like a Suave commercial. I can't wait until my hair grows out so I can go back! read more

Jody is great! Not a overly fancy place, Jody knows her stuff and her assistants seemed really nice and competant as well. I've seen both stylists & was very happy with my haircuts. I will continue to come back. Convenient location & great conversation.

Another shout out for Jody. Been getting my hair cut by her for a number of years. You can find cheaper cuts, true, but if you want to strut around with sharp hair for the month, it's worth the money. Men's cut w/ all scissors is $42. Can't remember if it's a discount for cash or surcharge for credit card... but bring cash. read more

Jody just gets it. You do not even need to tell her what you want (you can though and she will execute perfectly). She just has an eye for what will look good and makes it happen. I'm new to Somerville and thought I'd give hair co a try. I had a party to go to that night and I was hoping to leave the salon with a freshly styled head of hair. First impressions are not so great, the salon is out dated and a bit dirty... This is not a place to go for a relaxing experience. Beyond the less than clean location and dated look, the staff is not very professional. They had lunch delivered during my hair cut... And proceeded to eat it. Pizza. While they were doing my hair. Ick. The conversation was also less than appropriate. They swore and talked about uncomfortable personal topics. I'm not a snobby person, but when I'm paying for a service I do expect a higher level on tact than I would see at a house party. Jodi cut my hair half while wet, then dried it, and continued to finish the cut. The result of that was me leaving with messy, not styled hair. I've never had someone finish a cut after drying my hair and I personally don't think it worked at all. All of that being said, the staff are nice people. And the hair cut I received was okay but it was not what I really was looking for. Jodi does more spunky cuts and I prefer a more classic look. My final critique is that I paid $75 for a wash and cut. It was not styled at all and when I got home, I had to wash and style my hair for the party anyway... Which was not what I was hoping for. I will not be returning to hair co. read more

Totally awful experience with a groupon; everything from booking the appointment, to them making up their own rules for using the groupon, to the actual mani/pedi itself. Salon is small and shabby; I was told to pick my color from a "bucket" on a table. It was suppose to be an "organic" mani/pedi but I am sure there was nothing "organic" about what I received. No top coat applied, my cuticles were bloodied after the manicurist "butchered" them, very little time spent on either hands or feet, no hand or foot dryers, no comfy massaging chair ~ in fact, the manicurist came out carrying one of those home foot spas and I had to lift my leg out and put it up on her knee for my less than desirable pedicure; not sure tools were really clean either and owner dropped the f-bomb a couple of times in a conversation with a client that wasn't so private. Worst mani/pedi I have ever received. read more

I recommend a visit to Hair Co. I have been bringing my hair to Jody for 4 years now. Even when I moved farther away from the salon, I still make the trip to Jody. And the funny thing is, I often meet people who have traveled long distances to get their hair done by Jody or Alicia. Every time I get my hair done, I leave happy and loving it! She takes the time to look at my hair, talk to me about what I want and recommend what she thinks would look good. Jody has an incredible eye for the right style. I have curly hair and she cuts it so that I can go curly or straight and it looks great both ways! Jody will often check my hair after she blows it dry and do some final touches, even as I am standing or walking out the door. She pays careful attention to me when I am in the chair, I am the focus of her attention. And one of the best things is that however Jody cuts my hair, it grows out and continues to look great! i never get that "hair too long, no style, gotta go back right away" look. Jody always gets my color, just right. She helps me when I want a change and it always looks great. There was a time when my head was very itchy and putting on the color would lead to more itching. she took the time to add something so I would be more comfortable! I love my time at the Hair Co. The atmosphere is friendly, funny, and caring. Jody seems to have a genuine passion to help each customer look their best and feel their best. I highly recommend the Hair Co and I am confident that you will be happy with your hair style and with your time spent at the salon. read more

I had to give it 3 stars because I had a good experience getting my hair cut here. I wanted the junior stylist (it costs less), but she was out sick two days in a row, so Jodi saw me. It was a very nice hair cut, and she charged me the junior rates. So, I decided to go back for an underarm wax. First, there is no private area to get waxed, so I was told to that I had to wear a tank top. No big deal. Turns out, you sit in the hair washing seats for waxings. I'm tall, so I never find these seats comfortable. To get waxed was awkward. My hair grows in two directions, but Jodi didn't seem to notice. She rewaxed multiple times, which left me really red and irritated and bleeding in some areas. I hardly ever bleed or get red, even when a friend waxed me. Also, she didn't take the time once she was done waxing to pluck the few strays with tweezers. When that didn't happen, I knew i would not be going back for underarm waxing there. I don't mind Jodi's eccentric personality. It's fun. For hair cuts, it's a good place, and convenient location. For waxing, not a great place. read more

I've been going to Jody for 6 or 7 years, and she is great. It took me a while to get used to her quirks - she is a ball of fire who doesn't necessarily manage her time very well - but expectations are everything and I now know to should plan extra time when i go in. She also GETS my (lightly wavy, badly frizzy, thickthickthick) hair. She has been in the business of getting dull hair animated, thick hair shapely, and haircuts that look the same when YOU wash your hair, for a long long time, and it shows. Her highlights are legendary. Completely natural and downright sexy. And her eyebrow work is easily the best in Boston. If you do nothing else, let her at your eyebrows. She could make Chewbacca look like Queen Nefertiti in one eyebrow sitting. read more

I go here for everything: eyebrows, hair cuts, up do's, highlights etc. Jody is wonderful to work with. She knows what she is doing and LISTENS to her customers. I hate getting my hair cut for two reasons: 1. every other stylist who I have been to, always cuts too much off. One inch means an inch not 4. The second reason being they cant cut hair. Jody gives a great haircut. It is always even and I have never had to re-touch it after I get my hair done here. read more

Jody is wonderful ! I'm french, first hair cut in the US... was afraid of "how will I explain what I want". Jody really helped, understood perfectly, gave advice. And... hair cut is awesome ! I know most of the reviews on here are positive, but I've had a horrible experience with this place. I went to Hair Co. because of the awesome yelp reviews, but I will never go back here. I have very curly hair and went to Jody to get it relaxed; basically, while she was talking herself up, she burned my forehead and made my hair a wreck (it went back to being curly in less than two weeks!!) This was by far the worst hair experience I've ever had. When i called back to see if something could be done, I spoke with Alicia who was very sweet and asked me if I wanted to come in for a complimentary wash and cut, but I didn't think the drive from Newton after work would be worth it. I was promised Jody would call me back (she was on vacation for a week), and I haven't heard from them since. I can see how people would love this place, but I just thought I should share my bad experience. read more

I went to get my first hair cut at the Hair Co tonight, and it was just as amazing as everyone else says it is! Jodi was so sweet and wonderful, and my hair looks great. i recently bought a groupon for a mani/pedi. i was drawn to the natural process -- for the first time my nails were treated to no cuticle cutting (rather pushing the cuticle in) and no nail polish for fingers and toes. instead a process of cleaning and buffing which gives a shiny almost glossy, and clean finish. i loved it and it lasted for over two weeks, my nails were as if it had clear nail polish as were my toenails, and the bottoms of my feet smooth. most impressive was as my cuticles grew, no hangnails! HOWEVER, the second time i went, while i thought it was the same at the time, i realized a few days later it was very inconsistent. the cuticles were not treated the same (maybe she left out a process), and my feet were not as smooth. and finger and toe nails not so shiny or clean. It's such a huge disappointment especially when i was looking forward to this being my new place for mani/pedis. on another note, after the second visit i inquired about the full price for a mani/pedi (since i was using a groupon on both occasions and was hoping to come back) and she said she thought it was $60. Now for me, I think that's a bit high considering there is no nail or toe polish involved, and the place is not exactly a salon designed for nails. The area provided for mani/pedis is small and tight fitting, and there are no modern equipment for the process (no comfortable chair for the pedicure, instead an uncomfortable chair and a bucket for your feet!). Just checked their website and it's $80 for a manicure and pedicure. read more

I just had my first hair cut with Jody. It was great. She basically gave me the haircut I've been wanting for a year but couldn't get because I didn't know how to describe it to stylists/they didn't know how to execute it. Between listening to what I wanted and making a few suggestions of her own, she gave me something I'm really happy with. And she's also really nice and fun to talk to, even though I normally don't talk to stylists very much during haircuts. read more

I've been going to Jody for a year now. She's really excellent at many things, like waxing, but I'm going to find someone else to go to. Why? First, the atmosphere there is generally chaotic. She takes walk-ins, which my previous salons did not do, which means that you can sit and wait in a tiny, uncomfortable, crummy little space for quite a long time if she happened to take a few walk-ins before your appointment. The last time I was there, I was so tense that I couldn't wait to leave. It was a combination of other people being frustrated (the woman in the chair next to me said she was going to leave if she didn't get finished soon), the annoying, grating music, and the general noise and chaos. It was NOT what I hope to experience when I go to a salon. It reminded me of taking my kids to SuperCuts. Second, I always feel as if I have to fight with her to get what I want - and even then, my haircut is not what I wanted. (As an example, she cut the back of my hair short even though I did not ask for or want the back to be short. But it was too late after it was done.) Third, she seems to be trying too hard to be cool, which is somewhat annoying in a fiftyish woman. For a place that isn't cheap, I want to feel relaxed and not as if I'm in the middle of a crowded T station at rush hour. And I HATE to argue with a hairdresser. I'm willing to listen to their opinions, and often go along with them, but I don't like to feel that going to the salon is like combat. read more
