I've spent a substantial amount of time in one of NY's brown communities (Castle Hill) and the shish-kebabs here are somehow cheaper. Haandi's the open secret to every frugal foodie's South Asian fix. Last time I was here, I ordered the shish kebab (the size of my best friend's big black dick), a vegetable samosa, tea, and some potato disc thingy that I'll ask my friend for the name later. All that for, guess how much... go on, guess. FIVE DOLLARS! The shish kebab is not only girthy but sported that sweet charcoal taste I constantly crave. You can get better samosas anywhere else though. Like, probably in a dumpster. Also, when they say "vegetable" samosa, they mean potato. Is potato a vegetable? It's certainly a disappointment. The potato disc thingies were great though. Dense and flavorful enough, not to be over saturated with carbs. I've also had the meat platter. The meat platter's what you come here for. The meat platter's what the cabbies come here for. The students at the neighboring college, the underpaid TAs, the brown parents who subletting their dreams to their kids. You get the picture. The meat platter's the best deal: 2 meats, 2 apps, a side salad, a yogurt sauce, and the peace of mind that you saved some money for your daughter's college tuition (or your gambling addiction (I don't judge)). I can't tell you what the meats are because the language barrier simply breaks it down to chicken and other chicken but that's fine by me. It's your general flavored Indian food. But what I can tell you is: don't get the lentils. It's just so one dimensional and then you try to mix it with the yogurt sauce thinking it'd balance itself out and now you've lost your yogurt sauce to your shit creation. I've always been in the Curry Hill area, but never really explored many establishments other than a handful of the buffet lunch spots. It always seemed intimidating to go at dinner time because the restaurants are always filled with regulars. But I took a leap of faith and decided to finally check one out that my chef cousin and his chef friends highly recommended. Hence, that is how I found Haandi! This will be my neighborhood go to now! It is a fast casual, order at the counter and take to go or eat in kind of place. There is a buffet of food that you can chose from and the man behind the counter helps you. I chose the meat platter, which included (1) rice, (2) two meats, (3) one veggie, (4) salad, and (5) naan. All that for only $8.99! There was a good variety of curries and grilled entrees. I was so stuffed and had enough food for another meal. The price is definitely worth it and the taste is on point! Everything is so flavorful and well seasoned. The establishment attracts a very diverse crowd, so many people seem to know about the good food they serve. If you're in the area, I highly recommend Haandi! So my last review of this place was about 3 years ago, wow. Back then, they were pretty shitty and I think they got closed down by the DOH even for a time. I didn't know they were open again and because I parked a block away one late night after hanging out with friends and really hungry, I weighed my options of food in the area or on the way home and will always decide on Indian if given the option. Curry in a Hurry was nearby, but that place was trash last time I went (see my review of them on their page), and Haandi actually this time seemed like the only beckoning light from within that looked decent. Figured I'd stop in and if the food didn't look good I'd unapologetically leave. Here's what I liked and didn't like. And maybe this was because it was on a lonely Saturday night the weekend of Thanksgiving when the MidWesterners went home for the holiday weekend, so they had some more fresh or extra food hanging out, but I got lamb curry, chicken tikka masala spicy rice chick peas & eggplant and naan and it was actually very good. 3 stars (and not 4 or 5) because they did scoop from the pre-made tray and microwave it. I was concerned for my toilet bowl the next day after seeing that but by the grace of God I did not have any of those issues. The sauce was pretty hearty, the chicken slightly dry although passable, and the lamb was actually meaty, not cheap and full of cartilage like usual from these types of places. Also value- all of that for $9. Two meats, a vegetable, salad and naan. Not bad. So I suppose my advice is this- stop in, but check out the food before ordering. Maybe I was there on a good night when the "good" chef was working the stove. But this is a step in the right direction. Considered by many to be the crown jewel of curry hill, I had to make a special trip to Haandi in order to see what the big deal what this place is about. I discovered that it is indeed something special: a great indian/pakistani buffet for $10 including tax and tips. While this place technically opens at 10:00 AM, the buffet does not begin until 12:00 PM. They are quite specific about this, so I wouldn't bother showing up any earlier than 12, since they may not have fully set up the buffet table before then. However, keep in mind that as soon as you hit 12, the floodgates will open and tons of people will swarm in, so really do try to get here as close to 12 as possible without being too early. You may get confused by the upstairs/downstairs thing, but it's all the same restaurant. While you're allowed to sit anywhere, but the buffet is served downstairs, while the cooked foods to order, drinks, and everything else is served upstairs. It's pretty informal here. Just go in, take a seat, and as soon as the buffet opens downstairs, go to get your food. Not one comes here or serves you or anything, and it's kind of strange how they keep a tab on what you're eating, but I'm pretty sure someone is watching/taking notice, so just go for it. The buffet, which is the claim to fame here, is quite good. As shown by some of my photos, this is where a lot of taxi drivers come to eat. I imagine because taxi drivers have to work long shifts, buffets make sense for them, and because this place has a super reputation, especially among Indian people, this is the right choice. The buffet is $10.00, POST TAX POST TIP, which is really just a mind boggling deal, considered so many of the other places offer at $11.99, $12.99 kind of deal. Not only is this impressive because the food here is so good, but also because it's been $10 for quite a few years now- judging by previous reviews left by other yelpers, it's been at this price point for around 2 years now. As alluded to, the food is quite good. It's not the best food in the world, or even the best Indian/pakistani food you can get in curry hill, but for what it is, it's damn good. They have rice, meat curries, vegetable curries, naan, a salad bar, a rice dessert... the selection actually isn't huge, but they have everything that you'd expect of a typical south asian place. THere isn't any tandori chicken included in the buffet (you may be able to get it at the counter), but it's not a huge constraining factor, since the chicken in the other dishes are very good. The biggest downside here is that it's not super clean. Even when I came in, where I was ostensibly the first buffet customer of the day, the table was still not very clean. Still, worth it. Also the mango lassi wasn't great, kind sour, and costs $2.99, which isn't much cheaper than any other mango lassis in the area. Next time I'll probably try the plain lassi. Ordered a bunch of food from here to go. The stuff is absolutely disgusting, I'm sure if it was fresh it would be great but there was a nasty stench coming from the food like it has been sitting out all day or held on to for over a week. I will never order at the end of the day. The price does not make up for skimpy amount and lack of freshness. The packing was insanely oily, my white counter turned yellow trying to unpack from the grease spilling out and stuck to the bottom of their containers. This is a popular food place for people from South East Asia. I had the chicken seekh kabab, Dal gosht (mutton with lentils) and chai (South East Asian tea with milk). I was particularly let down by the tea as many people regard it as one of the best $1 tea in nyc. It did not have the creamy texture which is a staple of the traditional chai. The Dal gosht was okay in that the gravy had a lot of depth and the mutton was particularly tender. The only downside was that it did not have proper seasoning. The chicken seekh was really good and given the one dollar difference between 1 or 2 Kababs, I opted for the latter. I did not intend to review this cafeteria style Indo/Pak restaurant, one of many of the illustrious Curry Hill series of Lexington Avenue restaurants located virtually a block from my workplace. Hence, the absence of my usual photos and a check in. However, I ate the $10.99 ($12.00 with tax) buffet there on 10/23/18 and feel obligated to write as a public service. Decor(which is not factored in this review) is drab and depressing. This place appears to be one which serves food as human fuel, not for culinary pleasure. The inhospitable nature of this place is partially evinced by the absence of any identification for the alleged 22 or so options. So....you do not know what you are eating.....but I'll try to guess. It looked like I ate some type of Beef Stew, Chicken Biryani, Spinach with Chana Dal, Chicken Tikka Masala and plain Naan. The beef and chicken dishes were bland and hardly seasoned at all, with no discernible spices. The "gravy" which bathed those dishes was extremely oily. The spinach dish was passable. The Naan had no puff or fluff that you would generally expect. Simply put, I am virtually certain that this was the worst Indo/Pak food that I have ever eaten. BOTTOM LINE: The Curry Hill area is accurately lauded for having a number of great Indian restaurants. This is, however, one to avoid. read more

They don't really have a lot to offer here, but the quality of the food is on-point. I'll take quality over quantity any day. I go to school 4 blocks away from Haandi and I would trek out to Curry Hill whenever I have a few hours to kill and I'm craving Indian food. The servers are really laid-back here. You can just walk in , pick up a plate, grab some food, seat yourself and enjoy your food without being bothered. This is by-far the cheapest and best buffet that I've been to thus far. They offer about 10-15 varieties of Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani food here. My favorites include the chicken tikka massala, curry potatoes, spinach, basmati rice, samosas and naan. You can eat as much as you want for only $10. You can even eat til you puke. You know this place is good when you see a whole line of yellow cabs parked outside. This place is popular with cab drivers and locals. Would I be back in the future? Sure would! read more

I ordered my usual: -Seekh Kabob: nothing special and the size has been significantly reduced from what it used to be. I'd rather they increased the price then give little more than half the amount. -Chicken Curry: way too oily and and full of bones. The container was also incredibly small and it's definitely not worth $9 when they are not even giving boneless chicken pieces like other, far better restaurants across the street with actual decor and customer service. -Naan: disappointing, nothing like the real thing. It's rumored that Haandi's objective was to serve cab drivers, to be a cardamom scented break from their incense, smoke billowing across their carpeted dash boards. Their effigies and jingle jangles. All of a sudden, Lauren and I are surrounded with paper plates. There's salad, bread, and yogurt to go with our curries, our rices, and kabobs. Lauren craves Indian or Pakistani food when she's homesick. She eats with her hands, delicately dipping bread in the curry, scooping it up like her mom taught her. Her hands are slender. She takes a bite and smiles and says that her father would love Haandi. It's no frills. Her dad, full of pragmatism, hates frills. He shaves his head and wears a mustache. He's where she got her strong jawline from. She is part afraid of her parent's dynamic to part chasing it. It's my bullheadedness; she unconsciously seeks my validation, my bad animal is welcomed. She, like everyone else, is chasing her trauma. I don't try to be an unreasoning brute. I sit with her at Haandi and enjoy how much she loves it. I listen to her stories and break open samosas and let the potato steam waft on both our faces; we share things in proximity. Her misfortune rather is in knowing my thoughts on gender and philosophy. I'm much more of an order theorist than she... She sees conflict in most things... except of course in the assembled nature of Haandi. She deems it perfect. Good hot food. Well-priced. Authentic. A Curry Hill diamond mined by two brown artists. I want to marry Lauren. I tell her, I want Haandi to cater our wedding. I wonder if they'd do that. I came here with my anorexic friend who refuses to eat in front of me. Either he's really intimidated by a girl who can put away that much food or he just wants to see me eat a meal for two. Either way, we got a feast here after a long day of photography- butter chicken, naan, chapli kabab, and seekh kabab. OK, I had one shot to find a Pakistani place in Manhattan to take my former SF roommate to. I hail from the land of Shalimar, so there was a LOT riding on this. And given that my former roommate and I were denizens of Shalimar, Pakwan, and all the other joints in the Tandoori-loin, we obviously couldn't give a rat's ass if there weren't any tablecloths or all the other "elegant dining" accompaniments. It was all about the food. Now, in my few short days of being in Manhattan, I made sure to pick the brains of every single Pakistani cab driver whose car I hopped into. And as soon as they knew I was one of their people, they couldn't stop giving me suggestions. They'd hand me an old receipt and a pen and I'd be scribbling everything down, and Kabab King in Queens was consistently their #1 pick, but when am I going to have time to go to Jackson Heights with only 3 days in New York? So the Kabab King on 27th St it was. Except it was closed. And the weather was miserable outside. And we had walked around the reservour in Central Park all the way down 5th Ave till we eventually got to 27th St. Roommate, not happy. Extremely tired and hungry roommate means irate roommate. I needed to find something fas and I recalled Curry Hill wasn't too far away on Lexington so we walked over there. And all of sudden I was a kid in a candy store. I mean, for real? THIS MANY Indian and Pakistani restaurants, all smushed right next to each other? Incredible. Seeing a desi-style Chinese restaurant blew me away. Now, why I chose Haandi over all the other places, I have no idea, but that's where we went. Walking in, it immediately gave the divey aura of Shalimar. A big Pakistani family was eating by the window, and everyone else inside was digging into their food voraciously. TV was tuned to Geo News talking about the latest tragic event from the homeland. Seemed like an authentic piece of Pakistan to me. My roommate let me pick the food so I walked up to the counter, where the owner spoke so quickly I had to ask him to repeat himself. I immediately asked for seekh kebabs, which he said they ran out of. Huh? How do you run out of seekh kababs at 7 pm? Bah. So I ordered chapli and shammi kababs instead, along with chicken biryani, bhaingan (eggplant), chana daal (lentils), chicken tikka masala, aloo palak (spinach and potatoes), naan and aloo paratha. And as for the verdict: Biryani: Excellent. I could have eaten 10 plates of that. Naan: Well done. Not great but better than many other places. Bhaingan: A greasy mess. Didn't taste of much either. I don't know how much of a fan I am of having these dishes just sitting there for him to dole out vs. them being freshly cooked. Channa Daal: OK. Aloo Palak: Also ok. Chicken tikka masala: I didn't have any, but roommate thought it was excellent. Aloo paratha: That thing drowning in oil was a paratha? What? Shammi kabab: Excellent. Chapli kabab: Also good, but overcooked (too dry). So all in all, a few bright spots in the meal, and by the time we were wrapping up, the place was PACKED. The line went out the door so it was obvious this was a local community favorite. And I can see why. All that food we ate? Something like $28. TOTAL. How crazy is that? Whenever the weather is cold and crisp and I'm craving for something hardy and good to eat, I usually like to venture to this hole in the wall restaurant for some really good Pakistani food! To be honestly, I really don't know what it is about this place that I like so much. Their choices are decent--one station carries an assortment of fresh veggies like salad, tomatoes, cucumbers and pickled veggies, while the other station carries hot food. Their selections are usually interesting, not something that I'll find at other restaurants around this area and it's always well seasoned and packed with enough heat to brings out the flavor without me having to beg for water. So once upon a time we were in London and we heard about this wonderful and authentic Indian restaurant that made like the best "homecooked"-style food. We waited in line for like an hour to get into that place, managed to finagle our way ahead of another hour's worth of folks, and had a really excellent meal. Hanjan is better. It's Pakistani, not Indian, but it's homecooking at its finest. So half of you will read this, go to the location, peep the facade and the numerous taxis in front of the building, and turn around and head somewhere else. A few other brave souls will actually go in, look around, and end up walking back out and probably going across the street (we actually did this before conquering our fears and going back inside). For those of you who actually eat here you're in for a real treat. We went for lunch, too early for the buffet, but we ordered probably seven dishes. Service was slow but personal (I'm fine with that) and your food may be re-heated after ordering. We weren't brave enough to eat there (it's not that clean) but our reward when we got home was just absolutely wonderful food. I won't try to describe all the dishes we ate here. This used to be my favorite Pakistani restaurant in NYC, but recently the food has started to taste the same. The customer service is pretty bad, with whoever mans the counter seems to ignore people in the line, sometimes snappy and kind of rushing the customer. It does have a loyal following with the same people in there most of the time. I used to love their Nihari and Paye (cow feet), but recently they have started tasting bland, as if there was no heart involved in the food making. The food is authentic, no doubt about it. If you're not into spicy food, I'd advise against going. I'm used to South Asian food and I still found it spicy! It's really cheap ($8.99 per platter) so you get what you pay for. They won't make anything for you, but jut serve you ready made stuff after heating it up. That being said, the taste is still great! Awful experience. Behavior by staff and the owner have been reprehensible. We spent the evening there and a friend lost an item of deep sentimental value. When we inquired about it, several staff members gave us conflicting stories about who they were and what happened. Subsequently, we reached out to the owner to ask for his help in finding the item. We implored him to ask his employees. We appealed to their better sides and told them there would be no judgment if someone found it. We simply wanted to find the item and the behavior of the staff led us to believe they knew something about it despite their denials. First the owner ignored our appeals. Eventually he responded and showed no interest in helping at all. He was dismissive despite all the information indicating that one of his employees may know where the item was. It seemed like he was more interested in covering for his employees than doing what was right. I cant imagine patronizing a place like this ever again. They lack integrity. If they are willing to behave this way for a lost item, who knows what they are capable of regarding food safety, your credit card info, etc. Can't believe the lack of decency showed by this place. Food that tastes like mom's home cooking. Plus the prices are unbeatable. And the portion size is crazy big. The variety of food is very wide as well. However, the naan and tandoori chicken are not the best. They lack the crust formed from a tandoori oven. I would recommend any of the curries and the yellow biryani.
