Ate at H3 with some coworkers recently. The ambiance is cool and has the western vibes you expect from a restaurant in the stock yards. It was fairly busy for a Monday, but the service we received from the staff was on point. Unfortunately my meal wasn't at the level I expected. I got the sirloin and asked for med-rare (which it was) and also opted for the standard baked potato. Other than being cooked properly, that is the end of the highlights. It did not have any seasoning that I could detect, nor would I know that it was cooked over wood if I hadn't seen it on the menu. It had almost no flavor and was also pretty chewy. It seemed more like a choice grade steak from the supermarket. The baked potato, on the other hand, had a big pat of butter (normally not a complaint), but it was extremely salty. My brother got the Chicken Fried Steak, and I was able to sneak and taste... so good! Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the meats on the menu. H3 Ranch was another one of the spots that I was convinced was a must-visit for my trip to DFW. We got stuck in the inevitable traffic jam that is the Stockyards on a weekend, and caved to the parking fee that allowed us to park off the other end. We didn't have a reservation but was given an estimate of 40 minutes for a party of two. No calling ahead to put your name down, you actually have to approach the host to get on the waitlist. We had fun exploring the rest of the Stockyards while we waited, and the wait time was for the most part accurate. Once we were seated, we ordered the 16 oz smoked sirloin steak with a side of roasted ear of corn, baked pork and beans, and ranch fries, as well as the filet mignon with a side of creamed corn and baked potato. The house bread paired very well with the whipped butter and went down easily, my filet mignon came wrapped in a slice of bacon and had that warm pink center that was promised with ordering medium rare. The baked potato comes with sour cream, cheese, and green onions if you want those, so the toppings are included. The sauce that came with the filet mignon was heavenly, you have to dip the meat in that sauce! The house fries were unfortunately quite cold once they reached our table, but our server was quick to give us another baked potato once we informed her that the fries missed the mark. A visit with out of town guests was an expensive disappointment! The six of us ordered different items and had entirely different experiences. Our reservations were for 6:00 PM We were warmly greeted and seated immediately.The ambiance is nice - and very appropriate for the Stockyards environment and enjoyed by all. Our waitress arrived promptly and suggested queso or salsa & chips, of which we ordered all three. All of which were great. Our waitress took our order promptly and answer a number of questions on the menu with knowledge and grace. I asked for a simplified version of their standard salad which exceeded my simple expectations. Their vinaigrette dressing is simply outstanding ! Then the wheels fell off. The chicken that my wife ordered was OK, however her French fries were cold. (Not cool - but COLD ). Of course this was not identified until our waitress left- therefore, we had to flag her down. She graciously asked if she could bring my wife some new fries or possibly a baked potato. My wife chose the potato. I ordered the small Prime Rib medium well ( slightly pink ) - as I always order. The slice of meat was larger than expected, but was decidedly red and VERY rare and room temperature. ( not warm ). I was very hungry and in spite of the conditions - was eagerly looking forward to devouring my serving ( I have often ordered steak tartare- so no real problem there ), however upon cutting into my meat, it became clear that my cut had more (70%) of an inedible knot and large vein of gristle than edible meat (30%). Of the 30%. I ended up with a large pile of scrap and a few bites of meat. All was thought to not be lost as the flavorful cap was part of the 30% of the entire cut that I was able to salvage. Unfortunately the cap and the remaining of the meat was about as bland as cardboard. When I shared the vast amount of meat that I could not cut through ( much less eat ) she barely broke stride and said "that happens sometime with a Ribeye !". I had a split second to decide to not remind her that I ordered Prime Rib - not a Ribeye. Therefore the best part of my expensive meal was the simple salad with the great vinaigrette dressing. read more

We were super excited to try here, love the location, love the atmosphere and decor, however food and service are just so so. We had reservations, got there around 4pm, so not too busy when we arrived, in fact there was only one other table seated when we arrived. First bad encounter was the hostess, she walked us to the table with very little to say, we were being conversational with her, however she refused to have conversation. When we got to our table there was multiple ketchup drops in my chair, lots of crumbs, a few smears of who knows what and gunk. I pointed it out, she just stood there. As there were only cloth napkins for our party on the table that were wrapping our silverware I asked for a napkin, still she just stood there with no words. I look around and find a stack of paper napkins by the tea pitchers they have set out on a table, I grab a few to clean my own seat off. My husband pulls his chair out and similar filth is on his chair, he asks hostess right out for help, she turns and walks back to hostess stand with no words!! We take care of our seat cleaning. Our server was not thrilled to be working either, she had no smile till it was time for us to leave and tip, but by then her actions and treatment to us already determined her tip. We tip well, and will gladly add lots more for great service, and on a bill for $240, she'd be getting a bit for doing a good job and lots for a great job. She was not pleasant to have, she did not help with the menu, she showed zero personality, she was very robotic and missing for long lengths of time. Only half the burnt ends appetizer was ok, as other half was chewy and stiff. The 18 ounce bone in rib eye was not flavorful at all, very disappointed. The porterhouse steak was tolerated. The chicken fried steak was an over well done chewy steak in bland batter with generic gravy, come on, this is Texas, give us tender steak, great batter and gravy like it should be. The fried catfish was just a regular old run of the mill catfish, nothing great. The skillet potatoes were awful, I couldn't even eat them, one bite and not another one at all, due to them being soggy and flavorless! Skillet potatoes normally have some sort of crisp or crunch to them, they seemed soggy from steaming in their own heat for who knows how long after getting off a skillet. The tea had an off aftertaste to it. The plastic cheap bread dish was laughable, if we're paying hundreds for dinner don't give us plastic! Oh, and we can't forget the guy who goes around with a spoon and baked potato toppings to spoon out on your potato got them all over the table, including in a drink, and not much actually made it to the potato. They are definitely not fall off the bone. They lack flavor. And via aroma and essence of the ribs it resembled more like sandwich meat, rather than the smokiness of a good rib. A turkey leg would be the equivalent in terms of texture, except that would be doing a turkey leg an injustice. Fries were a toddler serving size and not great. Anyway don't get the ribs. Let me start by saying I've eaten here a few times. The Hostess aren't customer friendly. On this visit as we were being seated at a table we saw a booth and asked if we could have it. Nope. 10 minutes later they seated a couple down. No biggie.. several other booths are open. Our waitress was great but the kitchen got our order wrong. The steak was ordered well done and arrived med rare. Had to send it back....it came back burnt on the outer side and medium (super pink) on the inside. Everything we had to eat was good and the atmosphere was quintessential Western and Texas. The open fire pit in the left side of the restaurant creates a prefecture environment and the three buffalo head mounts over our table have an air of credibility to H3. Great steak, well cooked as ordered. The skillet potatoes are fantastic - nice chunks of cut potato fried crispy but not overcooked. The best part, though, was the service. Our server was attentive, conversational but not intruding, and made some great suggestions about the menu along the way.
