Told my boyfriend to try this place out. He went around 10 a.m. and most of the buns/pastries were sold out. He did get a pineapple bun and red paste bun, 2 sponge cake, &...¿egg cake?(taste like an eggy pound cake) and a coconut bun?(my least favorite, bc the cream was too much but my bf ate it all). The red bean paste bun was bread with red bean paste baked on the outside, no filling but tasted great. Not too sweet or bland with a hint of bean flavor. The pineapple bun was one of the best I've tasted, with the best crispy top without being overly dry, and just the right amount of filling. And for the price?! Unbelievable! Honestly this is the best Chinese bakery in the neighborhood that doesn't disappoint. Their Milk tea and Lo mai gai (Glutenous rice chicken) is the best! Their milk tea is always consistent even when it's iced. Their lo mai gai is always cooked so perfectly and never too salty which is great. It's the perfect light breakfast when you are in a hurry. They have a 3 tables & outdoor dining but it gets packed fast so its best to go early if you want to dine in. The line is fast and quick. Tip: cash only! read more

H&L Bakery is my family's go-to bakery in Brooklyn. It's a small bakery, but the service is honestly phenomenal, definitely the best I've ever seen. The ladies are always so sweet and polite, and cracking jokes here and there with their customers. My father occasionally drops by in the early morning for their buns, while my sister and I often stop by on our way home from work for their ham and egg toast sandwiches, spam and egg toast sandwiches, egg tarts, coffee roll cakes, and a milk tea or two. I like this bakery. It has good savory and sweet buns. I stop by this place to get breakfast or a quick bite to eat before I take the subway. They are always busy which means they must have loyal customers and reasonable pricing. Ambiance - Inside the bakery, there is seating but only a couple of tables. It's more a pickup and go place. The staff are friendly and quick. My favorite food items to buy here are the red bean pineapple bun, pineapple bun, and cocktail bun. I also like their honey with lemon drink. Many thanks to my co-worker, who lives up the street, for filling me in on this neighborhood goldmine in Dyker Heights! Don't let the frugal appearance fool you, the quality here is outstanding and far superior to most (if not all) of the tourist trap Chinese bakeries you'll find in Manhattan. I highly recommend going closer to opening, if you can, to make sure you get the fresh stuff. Their stock was largely depleted by the time we got there in the later afternoon. But what we did have was incredible! The real highlight for me was that red bean bun, beautifully swirled with layers of sweet red bean paste. The dough itself was soft and perfect. The fried pork buns were also top notch, as were the various pineapple buns. If you're looking for more savory fare, they do serve pork and egg steamed rice rolls and siomai as well. Top it off with a hot or cold milk tea and you're good to go! Cash only, so come prepared. read more

This place is so awesome and I love that they exist for the locals. The food here is legit and very good. The stuff isn't cheaply made and the prices are also good. The shumai and ha gow are legit as is the chicken lotus leaf wrap. The rice rolls are also good. The chicken feet had a little too much sauce, but was also satisfying. The dim sum meatballs were also legit. I tried pai gwut fon and that was also legit. The veggie noodles had good wok hai and also very good. If you are looking for some comfort food, this place is it. I hope this place lasts for a long time because it is a true hidden gem in the neighborhood. read more

I got here early enough to get the egg tarts. The filling is more on the custard-y side, than medium firm like the other places. I like how I'm always handed nicely warmed goods, instead of those that are just sitting out. Friendly and cordial staff as always! read more

Stumbled upon this bakery while working in the area. Usually I avoid one review newbie places if there are other options but there was so much gross slush on the ground, I just went to the closest bakery. I walk in and ordered spare ribs noodles, dumplings and a hot yinyang (coffee + tea) with a little sugar. Then...I realized I don't have my wallet on me. Super flustered and embarrassed. At this point she had started to make my drink so I'm like ahhh, I don't want to be that guy who orders and leaves. I told the lady that I forgot my wallet and I gotta come back for the drink. Super gracious (and quite insistently), the owner told me it's okay and I can come back and pay her whenever. I'm like: Nooo. I can't do that. This is so embarrassing, I'm sorry. The woman wouldn't take no for an answer, tallied up and told me I owe her $5.70 next time and gave me my food. Hungry with my wounded pride, I gratefully accepted. The dumplings are okay and not very greasy. Drink was standard and the right sweetness (some places pretty much ignore customizations). I was most impressed with the noodles! It's actually the right texture and yummy. My only compliant is that the spare ribs are very bony. Someone came in to order bubble tea but they told her that they ran out of bubbles. The owner said they made it in small batches to ensure freshness and they just ran out. This is def a good sign. Thanks H&L! You guys are awesome, I'll be back tomorrow!! read more

One of the newest bakeries along New Utrecht Avenue/71st street that I've came across three months ago. It's quite small and has limited seating area. There's a good selection of baked and steamed goods to choose from. There doesn't seem to be much selection of dim sum, so wouldn't recommend coming here if you're looking for dim sum. I've had their coffee and yin yang and it was okay, but definitely not the best one. I would only recommend coming here if you need a quick bite or to buy something small to eat on the train/bus ride. There are better bakeries along 86th street. read more
