Clean, cool, friendly, steady amount of customers. I got the beef & lamb gyros and Greek salad. It was delicious. So so delicious. I feel like kicking myself for not going sooner especially since the Habitat for Humanity store is right next door & I go there more regularly than normal for 2nd hand. Salad was fresh & crisp & the dressing was perfect, it had a lot of feta cheese. The man who works the front is a bit serious but I think that's just his personality, he's just not warm & fuzzy which is ok. Tried walnut baklava, & chocolate & it was good but not great. I like when baklava has honey in it & this one doesn't. But the baklava is priced right (1.50 I think). Maybe I should give 5 stars cuz I love eating here. read more

This amazing find was a total accident. We intended to go next door to the Egyptian market, but their kitchen in the back was closed, so we called an audible and went down a few doors in the plaza to the Gyro Plus restaurant. Our order consisted of a beef/lamb gyro, and a hummus & falafel gyro, lentil soup, fries and a beef/lamb platter. We were in a hurry, which was not a problem because the food came out very quickly. The first taste was of the beef/lamb gyro and it completely blew us away. The Hallal meat was seasoned perfectly, the vegetables were fresh, the tzatziki sauce was authentically delicious and the pita bread was pillowy soft on the inside with the right amount of buttery crisp on the outside. The lentil soup was also extraordinary; hot, the right amount of zing from lemon and generously portioned. We did not have any room left for our platter, but are excited for the amazing left overs. The menu had numerous Hallal and vegan options and you could customize your gyro to your liking with adding items like feta cheese. The restaurant itself was very clean, with numerous booths and tables to enjoy your food with fun, Middle Eastern "pop" music to listen to as you dine. Beautiful posters of Lebanese cities were adorning the walls and there were cases of sweet treats like Baklava in numerous flavors to enjoy... if you had any room left! The staff was friendly and multiple orders were placed while we sat and ate, and the man at the counter was able to quickly and efficiently prepare each order for the customers to take out and enjoy at home. We are from the Detroit area, and have had the pleasure of dining at numerous Middle Eastern family owned restaurants and were even spoiled by our generous neighbors to home cooked meals, and this reminded us of home. I dont know if y'all ever been to Lebanon, but I love this place more for the no bullshit Lebanese grandpa that works in the front than anything else. There are plenty of food options, but the baklava and pastries are even more vast. I always get the Gyro as that's what they're most well known for but I have tried many things on the menu and never been disappointed. If you're trying to go on a date here though, the ambiance isn't necessarily anything to ride home about, and the service isn't gonna be anything memorable either. Definitely try it, and if you're craving fries get them, it's a pretty big portion. read more

My family and I were on our way to the VA for a visit when we decided to look up a restaurant with vegan foods near by. We found this place in our search while a lot of its competitors were closed on a Monday. The place is very clean and costumer service is flawless for sure! There is outside seating as well as inside seating along with clean restrooms. Parking is a little tricky as there are way more parking spaces in the back along with a back door to get into the restaurant. We all decided to order the falafel hummus wrap with a side of fries and I also ordered the Turkish coffee. Everything was good. There are also vegan pastries that looked very tasty but we were all too stuffed to try them. Next time we are in Gainesville we will stop by again. read more

This place was moved to 13th street, but it was my first time trying it. Gyro Plus is a very hole in the wall type of restaurant, but those are usually the best kind! I got the beef gyro without tomatoes and it was just what I was looking for!! It only took about 5-7 minutes for my food, and the gyro was fresh and delicious. You have an option to get it with fries and a drink, but I am small and couldn't even finish the gyro. Granted, the decor isn't fancy or anything like that but the place itself is clean and the food is fresh. Definitely coming next time I'm craving gyros or falafel! read more

I do feel like there are other Mediterranean restaurants in town where you get more food for less, this was on the pricey side. We've been eating here for over 20 years. Always delicious and a great experience. Family owned and operated. They just moved back to their original location on 13th street next to where they make their bread. Talk about a stroll down memory lane. Where I had my very first gyro...... Flatbread is soft and crunchy, melt in your mouth. I always have such a hard time deciding whether to get a gyro or the falafel because they're both delicious. This time I went vegan. The hummus and tabbouleh are perfect and seasoned well. The falafel is fluffy and light with the best crunchy outside. Their French fries are delicious and I always loved their smoothies. Didn't get one this time but I was thinking about it! There's an Egyptian market in the same strip as well that's pretty cool. You can also get everything by the pound which we have done before. The Lebanese food is the best I have tasted in North Florida in my 29 years living here. The lamb and beef meet combination platter was delicious! The hummus is amazing, and the tzatziki dip was very generous! At other places, they never give enough. We ordered the falafels and two of the several types of baklava to go and we had them for dinner. SOOO good! Please don't call this a Greek place, as Lebanon shares many of the same cuisines but the cuisine is clearly Lebanese - the other side of the eastern Mediterranean ocean. Just look at their beautiful canvass posters and you will see it is not Greece, but beautiful LEBANON. read more

Stopped in and got my old standby - the gyro platter with rice. It was amazing (or fire, as the kids say). I wish we had food this good in Miami. Gyro Plus Grocery is a Mediterranean restaurant conveniently located between the University of Florida's campus and downtown. I ordered two separate dishes here (the falafel sandwich with hummus &the beef gyro platter) and was not impressed with either. The falafel sandwich was definitely my favorite of the two but both dishes were overloaded with lettuce and in my opinion did not stay true to traditional Arabic food. I will be returning to try other menu options and hope that I have a better experience. read more

OK it's been a while since I've had a gyro at Gyro's Plus. Mostly getting my greek Tarpon Springs. Here's why one star down from 4. Went in for 1 lb of gyro meat. Got my order to-go. tzatziki sauce was in the bag. They are obviously buying their gyro meat from a new supplier. Definitely a cheap cut of gyro meat now. Used to have a more lamb flavor, more greek spice with lots of garlic flavor. Almost tasteless meat now. Very weird texture also. Here's the kicker. I would have only taken them down to three (3) stars for switching to a lower quality of gyro meat. But the tzatziki sauce has pickles in it. They are taking advantage of college students and not having any other gyro competition in gainesville and making a tzatziki sauce that tastes like sourcream and relish. There aren't pickles or relish in tzatziki !! It's greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, mint or greek seasons, and that's it ! I am shocked on this last finding. Ozzy and Omar should know better, and are obviously cutting corners to make an extra $. Shame shame. On my boycott list now ! No soup for you ! One STAR !! read more

Hole in the wall with slow service, but delicious and fresh gyros! I was craving a gyro and my husband said he drives by here all the time so we decided to try it. We both got the gyro sandwich with fries. There were four other groups waiting and two to-go orders waiting. Our food took about 20 minutes (maybe a little less), but the gyro and grilled pita were incredibly fresh and the fries were crisp and had clearly just been made! I just wanted to update as I ate here tonight (30 November 2010). The beef gyro--served in a combo with Gyro Plus' outstanding French fries--was as good as ever and the French fries I would still say are the very best in town, anywhere. The service is always very friendly and also, quite prompt. The restaurant space and atmosphere itself hasn't changed in years--at least since 2004--but that's neither here nor there as this isn't a fancy place or somewhere you come for the atmosphere. The only thing I found substandard--and this has happened a couple times over the course of the current year--is that the baklava, though once normally outstanding, has apparently fallen upon hard times. My walnut baklava was tough and looked like it had sat around far too long. Before ordering it, I'd even asked "which baklava [of their several kinds] is most fresh?" and the owner said "all, all are fresh" so I chose the walnut. It wasn't so fresh. I don't know for a fact, but suspect their baklava is bought from a place in Jacksonville and not made at Gyro Plus. There are a couple Middle Eastern grocers in Jax that make baklava and ship to restaurants in Florida and Georgia and I expect that's the deal here, and would explain why if it doesn't sell quickly it might be stale. I will certainly go back for the gyros, fries, and smoothie-shakes--which for nearly a decade have never failed me. I won't be purchasing any more baklava though. read more

The falafel here falls short, but the sides come to the rescue. Their baba ghanoush is smokey and intense, the hummus is a revelation to anyone who is used to store bought stand-ins, and the flatbread is fluffy and tasty. However, I come here for falafel with friends sometimes, always order a falafel sandwich, and am always left wanting more out of the falafel itself. The hummus and tahini sauce? Bomb. The flatbread? Warm and fluffy. But the overall toned down approach to the flavors in the Falafel and sandwich itself earns just a passing grade. Do yourself a favor and order bread, hummus, baba ghanoush, and lentil soup or tabbouleh if you want to experience memorable flavors here. Gyro plus grocery has a large space and many different menu options. First of, don't let the guy at the counter's intense stare intimidate you! I tried the falafel vegan hummus wrap, which was stuffed with falafel, lettuce, tomatoes, and tahini sauce. It was a good size for it's price ($6.66 including tax) although if you need a more substantial meal, I would get a platter. Although I like my falafel on the crispier side, I liked how there wasn't too much sauce so you could still taste the ingredients (compared to sababba where you mainly taste the sauce). I also recommend the fries! There is also A LOT of seating here both indoors and outdoors, and a tiny little section where they sell canned sauces (I guess that explains why they are called "grocery"). They give you your food in a tray with your drink so you can sit and enjoy outside or inside. We were sitting outside, but the cigarette smoke from the bar next door was getting to be too much, so we ended up moving indoors. The service is minimal, but overall the food was tasty and a quick bite to eat with no fuss. read more

Typically, unless there are a few egregious dishes or some major missteps,I would never go with a two. Then why today? I was blatantly lied to!I Asked at the outset if they used a donar. An immediate yes was the response. A lot of Greek restaurants in my area of SE FL use a pre-made loaf of gyro meat slice it thin and it sucks. That is what I received today. The meat was sliced with surgical precision to about a thirty secondth and under cooked and more uniform than any human short of Morito. If that ever saw a donar I would be amazed and that person should be working at Shands as a surgeon. The fries were among the best I have ever has since frozen fries were introduced. The tzatziki sauce was good albeit a bit on the runny side. Great salad. Everything is served in styrofoam. Nice pita. They also made false claims about the size of the side order of tzatziki and it's cost. You will be nickle and dimed for everything. It is too bad that one lie ruined the whole meal. After all this place is called Gyro Plus. Plus what? If you are a fan of the fake loaf then the rest of the stuff is good; if not stay away. By the way I threw out most of my meal! read more
