I'm Greek and grew up in Queens. This is by far the worst "Greek food" I've ever had.. 3 souvlaki sandwiches $50. The meat was completely inedible that I had to throw it out. The "pork" in the souvlaki was gray. I tried to salvage it by frying it up and adding seasoning and literally had to spit out this mystery meat. I'm so upset and disgusted. Never, ever again. If rather drive 70 miles back to queens than to eat that mess again. read more

This place is pathetic. Over priced and disgusting. I ordered a gryo by itself...$17! When I went to eat it, it was rancid. My whole house smelled and I almost vomited. I went back to get a refund and the guy told me it's not his problem if I didn't like it. I told him it was spoiled and told him to smell it. I used to enjoy their grilled eggplant, but they ran out. I ordered fries with black pepper and a grilled shrimp pita with onion sauce on side. Their was a miscommunication due to my crummy phone and I discovered they only have fried shrimp when I received my order. The fries were cold, limp and unseasoned. They tasted store bought.The shrimp was store bought and frozen before being fried. The house made onion sauce was tasty. I wish everything was fresh and made in house! I did a phone order and staff was friendly. The portions were generous. The price was 19 for a shrimp pita, fries. That is the price one should pay for fresh, home style cooked, authentic food. I felt a little as if we were an inconvenience when we stopped by for lunch the other day. The lady running the place became friendlier the longer we stayed, but we felt a little unwelcome during our visit. The lunch prices were okay and the food was good, with decent-sized portions. The falafel was nice and crispy and the pita bread was excellent! The yogurt sauce was unusual to me, with strips of cucumber in it (it almost looked like cole slaw), but was very flavorful. My complaint is that they are not serving sit-down customers with an earth-friendly approach. While I expect disposable (recyclable) to-go containers, it would have been nice to be served on real plates with real silverware. Instead, our food was served on styrofoam plates with plastic silverware, and dressings and sauces in those little disposable cups with lids. If I had know of this wasteful practice in this restaurant ahead of time, we would not have eaten here. I'm not expecting anything fancy, just something that can be reused by the restaurant. I've been here numerous times over the last year and a half and I've always had a good experience. I've always ordered to-go. I always get the gyro and it's huuuuge. They put so much meat on the pita it's falling off the sides and you can literally make two gyros out of it. The gyros taste great, and the tzatziki sauce is delicious and always very fresh tasting. The hummus is also very good and the appetizer is a good sized portion. I've never really tried any of their other dishes just because of how awesome their gyro is. So let me give you guys an overview. I have been going here for 4 years. I moved to sound beach back in 2010 I believe and this is when I decided to try new eats in the area. I've always loved gyros so I decided to try this place as a spur of the moment kind of thing. This place is amazing to say the least. Of you see my profile I rarely ever give out 5 stars and this place nailed it. First off let me tell you that the staff is the best staff you will find in any small town mom and pops restaurant. The owner of the store is named George and he is super friendly. He is always at the register and is always happy to greet you with a smile. Seriously being 100% honest this guy is so freakin cool and hard working. Now the food. I mainly go there to get gyros. Up front I have never been a fan of souvlaki so I never really got it (with exception that is). Their gyros are amazing. George always gives me a heavy helping of meat on top of my pita bread. No joke it is so much meat it is enough to feed a helping of like 2-3. Not only that, the tzatiki sauce that you get is amazing as well. Thick, not soupy. Very creamy and delicious. Their vegetables are always fresh. I have had their lamb soulvaki and it was pretty good. Again keep in mind I do not like soulvaki. The lamb was not overcooked and juicy and it was very well seasoned. I may be biased because the people that greet and serve you there are awesome and the portion sizes and the quality of food you receive are off the chain for the price you pay. I bought a gyro: the meat was very tasty and there was twice as much as needed (though I'm not sure I really need that, and it's not unusual for me to find that the amount of meat on a gyro is excessive). The tomatoes were borderline as far as texture goes, and the pita could've been warmer. The sauce was very good. As many have noted, service wasn't the most pleasant. My main complaint was that I paid over $13 for a gyro sandwich after tax. I thought maybe times have changed, so just checked the web sites of local Greek restaurants, and I saw that everyone else is ~$9, and you can add a few bucks for a platter, just as I expected. I'm familiar with most of these places, and a few of them are top-rated Greek restaurants. Unfortunately, I'll have to find another place for my next gyro fix: not recommended. read more

The sauce is excellent, it is kinda like a cucumber cole slaw rather than a soupy yogurt that you get at other places. I had gone there for take out and it seemed it is frequented by many regulars. People who worked there were nice, and the place was clean. As far as the food, I was not entirely impressed with my souvlaki. The chunks of meat were very large, and this made for it not to be very tender nor flavorful. The souvlaki had a hint of marinate, but needed more flavor. It was not greasy which is a plus, and the meat used for it looked good. I had ordered the souvlaki dinner so I got rice pilaf with it that was rather undercooked. The rice was chewy. It seems like they cooked a giant pork chop and then cut it up into cubes, the reverse of the process one would expect when preparing this dish. It would have fared better if they had cut it up finer and cooked it on a spit. I had also ordered a chicken souvlaki pita for my wife, and it was prepared better with smaller cubes and it tasted a bit more flavorful but then again chicken takes up marinade a little quicker than pork. The portions were good, and the salad looked fresh and excellent. I dont eat salad but it was a very fresh looking salad! The prices are relatively high with a souvlaki plater @17.75 and a chicken souvlaki pita alone costing $8.15. This is about 20-30% higher than comparable places I have been. Portions were good, but paying $28 for a dinner, and a sandwich with no drinks etc is a bit high. read more

I usually get extras pitas so I can make multiple gyros from it, love it, delicious yogurt sauce and Greek salad, I'm pregnant now and get my gyro cravings so I definitely visit there at least 4 times a month and will continue to go there! I wanted a kids gyro because I wasn't going to eat a whole regular gyro so the lady asked if its for me and I said yes then she said okay I'll give you extra but I insisted I don't need it but she gave it anyway.. when I got home the Gyro meat was burnt... No wonder why they were willing to give extra.. To get rid of there bad cooking and now I got a nasty stomach feeling. Food Is good. The yogurt sauce is the best I have ever had. They are cheap as hell. Charge for everything. Even one grape leaf in a Greek salad is extra! Lol What kills this place is the attitude of (I'm assuming the owners) Phone orders make you feel uncomfortable, that is how nasty they are. Face to face they are cold and make you feel unwelcome. I am copying and pasting my google review, but adding a paragraph (2nd one and part of 3rd down).... Honestly the best Greek food around and the portions are enough to have 2nd and 3rd meals. Yes, there is Alexandros up the road in Mt. Sinai and their food is excellent as well, but it comes with a huge price tag and you're paying for the "ambiance" of the establishment. Is Gyro Palace a fancy eat in type of place? No, but the food more than makes up for it and you can take it home and eat it. (Here is what I am adding)--The ones on Yelp or Google who are criticizing over price is totally absurd. Do you think it's McDonalds where you can walk out paying under $10?? If you think that well then take a walk to Mickey D's. Yeah you may be paying $20 for a HUGE meal, but if you break it up you have easily like two meals so do the math if you're smart enough (Yes inserting sarcasm) Joanne (owner) is one of the nicest people within the food industry I've encountered. I can honestly say this as I travel throughout the island into Queens and Brooklyn. You want rudeness- go out that way and there's plenty of it. I first went to Gyro palace back in 2012 for the first time and always suggest it when i have family or relatives visit on LI I usually go there for take out but i have ate inside the cozy dining section. You order the food at the counter and they leave it up on the counter to take when ready. I always got the hummus appetizer which comes with pita tomato cucumber all over lettuce. It ROCKED! After that i got the beef gyro lunch special with a side of fries. I have yet to take someone there who has had the pride of saying they slayed the beast. This thing is a mammoth. It comes stacked up with raw onion and tomato under a single pita with the tziki sauce. This place is where its at if you are looking for a lunch idea other than a boring burger or chinese. Gyro Palace is surely one of the things I miss about my hometown. The food is delicious. My most favorite is a Greek salad with falafel, and a side of dolmades. Their salad dressing is homemade and delicious in every which way. Also, the pita bread that they use is perfect. Not too thick, but not thin and flimsy like a lot of the ones that other Greek restaurants often use. Falafel has always been prepared and cooked perfectly. I've had their gyro meat before too. Very tender and delicious. And don't get me started on their desserts...their galaktoboureko is out of this world! Prices have gone up a bit, but the portions are always huge. I usually get a couple of meals out of them. It's a small restaurant, so seating is limited, but I've generally never had a problem. Even when I have gone with larger groups of people. The staff has a very dry sense of humor, which I could see could maybe turn some people off at first. Once you get to know them, they're wonderful, hilarious people who are very personable and warm. This place could easily get four stars if it wasn't for the two biggest knock against it...price and service. The gyro's aren't your standard fare of generic greasy gyro, decent quality gyro meat for those who've had higher quality gyros. Pita's are warmed to order on the grill, and the Tzatziki sauce isn't your generic yogurt sauce, it has more of a shredded cucumber to it, closer to coleslaw than regular yogurt sauce which is extremely tastey. Now for the bad, first and foremost, 8.95 for just a gyro is a bit expensive, you get simply just a gyro for 9 bucks. No fries, no small salad, nothing. As opposed to many other greek places which usually for the same price get's you a side of fries which here costs around 4 bucks...so out the door you're looking at 13-14 dollars for a gyro and fries. Secondly, I live a good 15-20 minutes away from this place, if I call in and order a gyro and say it'll be ready when I get there and it's not, it's aggravating. Good food, there's better to be had at other similar greek and turkish places, definitely worth it if you're in the area, but price and service miss the mark. read more

I walked up to the counter and ordered a lamb gyro and this guy told me they don't use lamb anymore but beef. I swear I almost walked out right then. How can you call yourself a Greek place and not serve lamb gyros? If I wanted to eat beef I could have gone to any danm restaurant, but I was in the mood for lamb so natually I though gyros. He gave me an excuse like "we don't keep lamp because it expires sooner than beef" which to me translated as "too cheap to carry the real stuff." Very nice place! Ownership is family run! Long time in business. My gyro was emended and packed. But the meat was dry. The yogurt sauce was the best I've ever ate! I was also introduced to a tea that was very good but was specially grime Greece and was I felt a little high price but almost worth nit! This place used to be great. That is not that case anymore. Where is George??! The gyros have gotten smaller and the prices have risen. We used to eat here all the time because the food was great and George was very kind. Now - the staff is rude, the prices are outrageous, and the food is lacking. The gyro is still decent but you have to hurdle the steep prices, the rude employees, and the extreme wait time for take out. I recently ordered over $70 worth of food and was told it would take 35 minutes. Upon arriving, I was told it would be another 40 minutes. This place has gone down hill fast. I was here for a lunch menu/special walking in one can't ignore The sizzling Halel. The color of the rotating meat seemed better than most other joints and street carts I've expierienced- Maybe all other joints. The personal photos and Greek artifacts give you the sense these people are actually from Greece.Yes, the joint is comfy cozy small it's a Café' feel. They have standard beer and I believe a Mediterranean beer as well. I liked the way this place feels and the confidence of the guy at the counter who put my food together got my Spidey sense that this is something special. My order was to go. The Gyro platter W/ the sauce on the side. I got a glimpse of the foil wrapped Gyro it was huge. I assumed it was deconstructed the pita wrapped along with the Gyro guts all in the foil to make the illusion. Ain't no illusion this sucker was large! Effin' Big. The Pita was fresh and tasty; The Gyro-Normous (ha-ha) portion of meat was so flavorful and lacked any weird grease pellets or random crunchiness that can occur. The Dill sauce truly is unique. I've been here several times and usually get the chicken souvlaki in hopes that it'll be better but much to my dismay it's not. The chunks of chicken are always so big that I have trouble wrapping the pita around it. In addition, the chicken is dry and poorly seasoned. Their yogurt sauce is very good and has more of a coleslaw like feel to it. Their rice pilaf that comes with the platter is ok, could be seasoned better. Their Greek salad always tastes fresh but once again, their house dressing also lacks flavor and excitement. I've also tasted their spanakopita which tastes freshly made.
