Gyros (pronounced YEE-ROWs) Stop is what some people refer to as the Akropolis of Greek food in…read morewestern Illinois, and deservedly so. It has been named Springfields best place to Stop for gyros 8 years running. In the volatile melting pot of American cuisine, this classical dish has stood the test of time to become a staple at any Greek joint worth its salt. As you enter the Stop, prepare to embark on an odyssey as the overwhelmingly pleasant scent of kebab meat beckons you to step forward and place your order. I would hardly consider the Gyros Stop the home of democracy as the staff practically orders you to consume their renowned wraps. There are a multitude of items on the menu, but the only word you'll be able to mutter as you salivate over the thought of indulging in a tzatziki touting treat, is gyro. at first glance it may not appear to be much, but heed my warning, this is by no means a paltry platter. A steaming heap of gyro meat, a varied array of fresh vegetables, and a glob of my favorite white sauce comprise this meal. The beautifully orchestrated clash of flavors between the sweetness of the tzatziki sauce and the saltiness of the meat will eradicate any hesitations you may have had about foreign cooking. My sole qualm lies with the pita bread itself. The bread lacks the character that the rest of the ingredients bring to this dynamic dining storyline. It is clearly store bought and fails to bring the authentic flavors one wants in a dish as revered as the gyro. And for that, I must remove the Best gyro crown from the Gyros Stop until a new victor can be found.
