Stopped by Gypsy Grill in the walking area of Jersey City and was pleasantly surprised. It's a small spot with lots of Middle Eastern options. I ordered the beef and lamb shawarma for a quick bite, and it did not disappoint. Packed with flavorful sauces, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles, every bite was delicious. The guy taking my order was also super friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better. It's a super casual place with no bells and whistles. But great food! My go-to order was the chicken shawafel sandwich. They offer three spice levels and the garlic sauce is amazing. I've had shawarma sandwiches at many places across the country and this one is among my top favorites. Their kofta sandwich was great too, the gypsy fries are well seasoned and crispy, and their baklava is delicious. Good value overall. The restaurant is family run and the people are incredibly kind and courteous - a couple of times they got my order slightly wrong and went out of their way to make it right. The Gypsy Grill is a great spot for some middle eastern cuisine. Portions are huge but they do cost you. My plate was about 20 dollars with chicken kabob rice, mixed greens and a side of pita. They give you a tzatziki sauce and a red hot sauce (which is super hot) but enjoyable lol. The employees provided good service and made sure we got exactly what we wanted. This place doesn't have too much seating and seems to be more of a to go joint. Additional seating was provided outside. Gypsy Grill is right in pedestrian plaza, which is home to a ton of other bars and restaurants. This place is worth checking out. read more

I really enjoy the food at this restaurant. Everything is seasoned well and tasty. The cost is also very fair. My only complaint is that I have found hair in my food on two different orders so I am completely turned off by their food. They need to do better in the hygiene department. I usually give restaurants a second chance if I find hair because it might have been a one off but not here I guess... read more

The guys behind the counter were super friendly! Food was awesome! My wife and I enjoyed the large loaded gypsy fries and the large lamb and beef shawarma plate. Quality and taste was very good. Absolutely delicious 10/10 falafel pita sandwich! The people who work here are so friendly and even gave us a free falafel ball each as we were waiting. I was craving a falafel sandwich and this hit the spot - incredibly flavorful falafel - tender and moist, accompanied by generous helping of hummus, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, peppers, garlic sauce and ESPECIALLY their hot sauce. Honestly the food was kinda buns. Got the BBQ Chicken Gypsy Box. Pita was cold and kinda stale, Chicken was undercooked (pink in center and def not the pink smoke ring), rice was bland, didnt give me the hummus. No frills place with shwarma and falafel. I got a lamb box that comes in a round tin plate you'd find anywhere in NYC similar to halal guys. It's a pretty quick place to grab lunch to go. I thought it was pretty funny they kept their pita bread warm in a big rice cooker. Lots of funny stuff mounted as decorations on the wall. I don't understand the hype about Gypsy Grill. It's good, not great. I had the mixed shawarma box, gypsy fries, and hummus. The box was good, as were the fries, but the hummus was kind of gross and watery. The pita is not fresh and may as well have been a giant cracker by the time it arrived. After two infuriating forays into Jersey City outdoor Phase 2 dining - many maskless revelers and multiple service errors from one prominent place understandably struggling with the new procedures - I was delighted to have such a pleasant experience at Gypsy Grill. (Necessary evils of 2020 details first, then food) There are three small outdoor tables. I got the one closest to the street. It's downtown JC so it's not pure isolation but it was relatively safe. And the food was super-quick which means less lingering. I got the Saturday-only koshary, a splendid assortment of carbs and sauces. Rice and macaroni are accompanied by lentils, chick peas and fried onions. Tomato sauce is already in the dish but there are extra containers of it, plus a container of the spicy dakka sauce, which I didn't know about before but seemed harissa-esque to this untrained observer. read more

Whenever I go I get the gypsy platter which has their falafel (which is phenomenal), rice, hummus, and chicken (also very very good) it comes with two sauces; the red spicy sauce is the perfect pairing with everything to add a kick. The employees are always very nice and helpful when I've asked questions about the different items on their menu. Their fries have a really good seasoning on them. I walked up to the counter and ordered a Weekend Special Hawashi. It's oven baked and grilled mixed ground. The mixed ground is lamb and beef. It's stuffed into a homemade pita. It comes with a salad, pickles, and fries.(10.99) The person taking the order was professional, helpful, and quick. The persons putting the food together looked very clean and their station appeared very clean as well. I won't order the Hawashi again. I didn't enjoy it. I imagine it is authentic. It was well put together. I just think I would enjoy other items more. They have lunch specials M-F 11 am - 4pm, I will come back for that and try the shawarma. read more

We got three shawarma sandwiches and a side order of hummus. The shawarma sandwiches are larger than expected and one is definitely enough! The shawarma was pretty good - not Dearborn good, but pretty good. I would definitely order again if I was craving some good chicken shawarma. Lamp chops and kebabs were both a bit overcooked. Sauce and seasoning on protein tasted great. Rice was a lot - bottom part was greasy. Salads and pickles on the top were great. Great food, first experience ordering food from here for pickup. Food was packaged well, everything looked clean, and the person at the cash register was nice. I ordered the lamb and beef shawarma with tahini sauce. Very good flavor with yellow rice, I think for full flavor you should def order the tahini sauce all the time. My only recommendation is order an extra sauce because it wasn't enough. The food portion was great though! I'm a pretty big guy, 6'4 and weigh 190lbs and I couldn't finish my food! So, I love that.
