They are a young, sweet family with a new company and although ours would have only been their…read morethird project, we wanted to give them a shot. We've been deciding on whether to write this review, but are doing so others are aware of red flags, wishing we had the same opportunity.
We wanted a small remodel on our kitchen and laundry room and were told 3 weeks and X amount of dollars. We understand that with any project, an estimate is just that. However, they went way beyond what was quoted, both time-wise, monetarily AND left the job unfinished.
David installed our new dishwasher and washer/dryer combo incorrectly, which resulted in service repair calls to fix. He wasn't aware of basic building codes, which caused our first inspection to not pass. Everything he built had to be redone or repaired, the most serious being the rickety housing for the new extremely heavy sink (see photos). One of the 2x4's was severely cracked. He covered it up with face plate panels he cut too short, yet installed anyway, thinking no one would notice how crooked they were and then didn't bother to attach the door. His own subcontractor Rudy laughed at his work, which was not reassuring. Subsequent contractors just shook their heads.
Except for the subcontractors who did the tile work and counter (gorgeous, hence 2 stars), their others proved to be rude, dishonest and extremely unreliable. One (fired) yelled at me because he was late and didn't appreciate getting "chewed out" by Colleen, the other lied constantly about when he was coming to work, but most of the time would not show up at all. "Where's Rudy?" became a mutual joke with the Hungerford's. He lied about the work he was supposedly doing for us offsite, then complained they weren't paying him enough. After work, the jobsite was left a mess with trash everywhere.
During week 6, we mentioned my husband would be out of town with his family while his mother was ill and needed to know when this project would be finished so he could return to a clean, quiet house. David promised it would be finished Friday. In typical fashion, no priority was taken to accomplish this. That Friday afternoon, David decided to walk off the job - the same day my MIL passed away. When he realized he wouldn't finish as promised, he unapologetically blamed us instead of taking responsibility for not keeping his word, his own lack of time management, professionalism and skills. They started October 5th, we were told it would be finished October 23rd and he walked off Friday, November 16th.
We're grateful for the small amount owed because we're left with an unfinished project, although most of that was spent fixing the sink. As homeowners, we're not new to contractors and home improvement, so we weren't unrealistic with our expectations - to get what was promised, what we paid for, in a reasonable amount of time.
It really is a shame... We trusted them, welcomed them and their children into our home and treated them kindly. Although there were many avoidable, frustrating and sometime heated moments, we were looking forward to having a cheerful completion which didn't happen. In summation, we wish them well and hope they gain some integrity and have learned from this fiasco, so it never happens to another client.
PS: I ran this by my husband before posting and he said I'm far kinder here than they were to us and lucky for them, this is a short list of issues.
