In fact, I didn't know there were BAD dentists until I heard the complaints about others from friends. After taking a long hiatus from going to the Dentist, I did the walk of shame into Dr. Shieh's office, and there was no nagging or questions as to where I had been, but just a "hello! Good to see you". He doesn't try to sell you anything (except on the need to floss....). He also doesn't try to convince you of unnecessary procedures. Thanks to my dental hiatus, I was mighty close to needing a root canal. Since I had bad reactions to the numbing agents used, Dr. Shieh made sure he did the procedure that would be best for me AND my teeth. So if you need a dentist, go to Dr. Shieh. He makes it about as pleasant as I figure any Dentist can be (I mean - the Novocaine shot didn't hurt a bit. That is some mad skill.)

Yes, I still have all my teeth, I don't tend to go because I have excellent teeth (thx, genetics!) and have a solid dental hygiene routine. Dr. Betts took a full set of x-rays (it had been a while), did a thorough cleaning with an ultra-sonic scaling tool of some kind, and did a full mouth exam. The ultra-sonic thing was kind of cool, it didn't give the same icky scraping sensation, however there is a high pitched whine that I found somewhat bothersome. After getting my clean bill of dental health I was on my merry way. At just over 2 hours, the process was a bit of a time-suck, and I can think of plenty of ways I'd rather spend 2 hours. Also, the office is on the less-charming side of retro; while I believe I received excellent care, "antique" and "dental tools" are not words that are comforting to hear in one sentence.

As I feel comfortable with dentists, I got a second and third opinion. They both read my X-rays differently. Both professionals saw no need for any dental work (that could have been invasive and cost a few thousand). What confirmed that Dr. Gregory made unnecessary leaps was my gum exam. He said an extremely high number when examining a pocket near where he claimed I might need extra dental work. A second dentist (my new, permanent one) went over the same area and only low numbers came up. I asked her to please go over it, again. She said nothing was out of the ordinary. That in fact, the number he'd told me would have showed up on the X-rays as serious bone-loss. I was recommended this dentist by a friend who got a crown from him (also without a single symptom). From very specific floss to a specific specialist, it all turned out to be unnecessary. My floss - I floss daily - works great. My X-rays from here were blurry and I paid more than I have at other offices (with flat screens on the ceiling and complimentary Nespressos) for an exam, X-rays and a cleaning. His office sent me multiple texts about an upcoming appointment (which I did not opt into), left me a voicemail (who does this) and sent an email: PLEASE CONFIRM IF YOU WILL BE ABLE TO COME TOMORROW all within a few hours. Emails with all-cap subject headers: OVERDUE FOR CLEANING AND EXAM and UPCOMING DENTAL APPOINTMENT read like an intense old-school parent. Also, as unprofessional. I went in thinking I would have to have my tooth pulled (it just hurt so bad I couldn't imagine another option) Dr. Hoang and Dr. Shen looked at they x-ray of my tooth and asked if I was sure I wanted them to pull it? They said it could be saved with a root canal. I was thrilled and told them to go for it. About 2 hours later I walked out feeling much better. I told them about my previous dental experience and they told me they could see that I had some work that needed to be done but said it doesn't need to be all done at once and we can do it little by little. I went back this week for a regular check up and cleaning. They did full x-rays and found a cavity that the previous dentist had told me I needed a root canal on. Dr. Shen said it was close, but felt a big filing would be fine, and they fixed it. Not only are they efficient, friendly, & compassionate, but they are honest and I truly appreciate it. The front desk woman is friendly and will help with insurance questions. The area is right across from Target. Street parking is tight but there is a small lot for the business which has space for four cars and another handicap space. Most spaces are open when I've been there so you shouldn't have a problem with parking. Dr. Shen doesn't really practice anymore but I met with Dr. Chou and she was great! She gave me the most thorough cleaning I've EVER had. My mouth was kind of sore after because she spent so much time on my teeth. Highly recommend!

He assured me that he was very experienced at repairing hernias, and when I asked if he could provide patient referrals, he skirted the question by directing me to his 3 positive reviews on Yelp :-( He scheduled me for an operation within a week, at my request. But first he insisted I come back for an EKG before the surgery. When I returned for the 'mandatory' EKG he informed me that he planned to do a rectal, pelvic and breast examination as well. WHAT!?! for a hernia operation??? I think NOT! He really had a strange vibe that I was not comfortable with. He said that just because I look and feel healthy, doesn't mean that I am(?) and therefore I needed all of these other tests(???) I don't know what his real reasons were and I don't want to falsely accuse him of something he did not intend. But I did not feel good about his tactics and I left without doing any of his tests and cancelled my operation. I have chosen to take my business elsewhere. I have asked others in the medical profession about this and everyone I've spoken to says that it just doesn't add up to do all of these tests (except for the EKG) prior to a hernia procedure. Also, people think it's strange that he didn't even recognize my hernia until I convinced him. Just sayin' Be-aware.
