Gusto in George St serves up classic Italian food in a modern and stylish setting, it is certainly a cut above most of the city centre's other Italian restaurants. Given the sheer size of this place you are pretty much either guaranteed a table or a very short wait for one, and if you do have to wait, it is worth it. The tables outside are ideally placed for a spot of people watching and, in this area, there are generally a few amusing characters passing by to entertain you. The food covers all bases in regards to the pizza and pasta offerings that you'd expect, but throws in a few surprises too: suckling pig anyone? The calamari is very good and never chewy or rubbery, and the figs, ham and mozzarella is a wonderfully simple and tasty dish. This is a great place to come with someone fussy, they'll find something nice and safe to enjoy (yip, they do Bolognese AND Carbonara) while you explore the more adventurous parts of the menu. read more

hmm this is a rather difficult review to write as i went here for a work xmas lunch and feel like we didn't get to sample their actual menu! this is of course a gripe of the festive season as instead of offering the normal menu all places think that everyone just wants to eat turkey and christmas pudding.... but anyway, i have to say that while gusto does put on a special menu for their xmas lunch and dinner it's very good! we arrived at 2pm and were seated right away at a long table. my only problem with this is that you were rather limited in who you could talk to as it was the people immediately across from you or next to you. one of their round booths would have been nice so i could have seen everyone, but it might have been our party was too big. also i find sitting under the mezzanine level makes things a bit dark, but perhaps some people see this as atmospheric. from their xmas menu i ordered the butternut squash soup, the turkey with all the trimmings, and the chocolate tart. although we were a large party and they appeared to have quite a few of these our food was brought out very promptly after our order! i really appreciated this as two cocktails into the drinks already and a full glass of wine in front of me, i was desperate for some food!! the soup was absolutely delicious! it was the perfect winter warmer for a cold day with a nice smooth consistency and a warm squashy taste to it. it was topped with toasted pumpkin seeds and had a side of nice freshly baked bread that i used to wipe the bowl clean. the turkey was next and i have to say it was really only ok. i found the meat to be a wee bit dry and my food cooled off far too quickly after it arrived and the brussel sprouts with pancetta were almost cold by the time i finished them. however, they were still rather tasty and the portion of stuffing was just delicious!! i also really enjoyed the extra sides of roast potatoes and sauteed veggies. my chocolate tart was lovely but i was far too full to finish it so it sadly got mostly left over! the service we had was impeccable! i really could not fault our waiter, he was so lovely and helpful and always checking to make sure we had everything we needed. he also kindly suggested frangelico instead of amaretto for an after dinner liquor which me and some of my colleauges enjoyed so much we ended up having three! so excellent suggestion from an excellent waiter! he also let us sit at the table almost two hours longer than we were told we originally had, which was a great help as our head of department was delayed and only joined us when we had almost finished the meal. however, this did not phase the waiter and he brought out her meal when she arrived and never rushed her between the courses. i definitely enjoyed my team lunch here and from that experience i'll happily be back to sample more of their normal menu. i have been here once or twice before and know they do italian food well, so although i enjoyed the meal i do wish that we'd just been able to order off their normal menu because who says you can't have pizza for xmas?!?! read more

Although Gusto is part of a chain, it can be quite easy to forget that as the food is all so tasty and the staff are very attentive. Not your bog standard Italian, as it has a very classy feel about it. A nice place to go for a first date, or somewhere to catch up with the girls. The cocktail menu is excellent. read more

Ideal place for a largish get together. Good selection of food should keep everyone happy. Similar in a lot of ways to Browns next door. It was out first visit party of 9 and I thnk everyone enjoyed the food and atmosphere. read more

Although all the reviews here seem to go back and forth, we had a pretty good experience. We found the food really tasty, especially dessert. Our waiter was extremely helpful and nice. We were given a good table quickly without a reservation and this on a pretty busy night. Maybe we were lucky in comparison to the other reviews we read on here but I had a very pleasant experience. Would definitely come back the next time in Edinburgh. One star deduction though for the sub-par toilets and area around toilets. Restaurant is well executed and then you go through the back door to the toilet area and it's all downhill from there. read more

Went here on a Saturday night at 7pm the place was bizzy with a good buzz about the place, there wasn't any problems atall with the service, we were well looked after by our waitress, the food was great I opted for the fillet steak which was cooked to perfection. we both had 3 courses and 2 btl wine and a btl water and it was £102 which we thought was quite reasonable for the quality and service we received. read more

I had an excellent experience here on my birthday and was very impressed by the service we received and viewed other customers receiving. As I'm shortly to have a baby, I was impressed by the accommodation of a family with their twins, where the waiter whipped out 2 high chairs and helped them fold away their buggy as well as letting the children eat their own food. Perhaps it was my ample belly that did it but my pizza was parma ham and mozzarella pizza was very generously stacked with rocket and parmesan. read more

Gustos is located on George Street in Edinburgh. The restaurant used to be Est Est Est but was changed to Gusto a number of months ago. The décor there is very nice and the service levels of the staff is always pretty good. The food is good and not overly expensive. Maybe don't go on a busy weekend night if you are looking for a quiet romantic meal because it can get very busy and noisy. However it is perfect for a quiet night during the week or as a large crowd during the weekend. The menu overall is great (considering this is part of a chain). Definitely worth a visit. read more

Visited for lunch a few times and always had a good time. The restaurant is very modern and you can view some of the chiefs preparing the food from the kitchen. I have sat both upstairs and in the booths, the first time I visited was on a busy saturday afternoon and it was rather loud, other times I have gone during lunchtime on a weekday and it has been fairly quiet. I recommend the farmhouse loaf for a starter and also the Italian burger, one of the best burgers I have ever had. Great place for food in the city read more

Very nice looking Italian restaurant on George street. Had a lovely lonely dinner there by myself. The staff was great and the food even better. Great marinated olives and I highly recommend the gnocchi with pulled pork, pesto and tomatoes, absolutely delicious and the serving size was perfect. The restaurant was not very full when I got there around 5pm, but filled up very quickly so I would book a table in advance. I Will definitely be back for another meal. read more

Absolutely the worst food I've ever eaten in a restaurant. I think Ikea has better meatballs, and the tomato sauce tastes like it came out of a jar from the grocery store. We also called 3 days in a row for reservations, but they said they were fully booked. We walked by the restaurant 2 of those nights, and the place had many empty tables. We stopped in and they reluctantly sat us at a table. I wish they hadn't. Don't waste your time! read more

Est Est Est is located on George Street which is a really good spot as it's full of bars and restaurants. It can be very busy and loud so isn't always good for a quiet meal but for large parties and families it is perfect. The Italian menu is excellent, I would recommend the garlic and rosemary potatoes as a side dish! read more

The place has a good atmosphere and the prices are far more reasonable than those of its predecessor 'Est Est Est'. My husband took me and our children here for dinner on a Saturday evening and it was absolutely fantastic. The waiter who served us was very knowledgeable on the food and wine but was also very good with our children (who got to make their own pizzas)! I think this restaurant is tremendous and would definitely go back for more. The food is fresh and flavoursome and the service is second to none. Last time my steak was slightly underdone and the waiter was more than happy to sort it for me. Everyone seems genuinely interested in making sure you enjoy your meal and are willing to go that extra mile to ensure that happens. We picked this directly as a result of a recommendation and were certainly not disappointed. Given that our visit was at 6.30pm on a busy Saturday during the Edinburgh Festival, we were impressed by the calm manner in which the staff did what they could to get us a table after a wait of around 20 minutes. The place was going like a fair and to be honest, the hustle and bustle added to the experience. The food was well priced and presented great value for money. The mix of pasta, pizza and meat meant that no one in our party of 6 was disappointed. Those who had left room for a dessert were well impressed by the calzone. Full marks. read more

Four of us arrived on a Tuesday evening. Although it wasn't crowded we were directed to the bar to wait for a table. This wait took about 20 minutes even though there were many tables available. Thought it might be because we are Americans, but people who came in after us got the same treatment. Our waiter seemed indifferent from the get-go, then dripped red wine on the tablecloth and didn't even bother to sop it up. After we ordered there was an interminable wait. Then somebody came over to apologize. It wasn't the waiter. The food then came out and the waiter reappeared to pour the remaining wine. He filled two glasses, draining the bottle, and asked us if we wanted more, as two of us sat there with empty glasses and two with full glasses. We were pretty much speechless. On a two week trip to Ireland and Scotland this was by far the worst service we had. I'd give one star, but the food was pretty good. read more
