Pizza con carne
Shaji K.

One of the very very few places still serving food late at night in the city. Given that, most of the tables were taken for eat-in. Opted to take the order to go as they generally don't take long to make the food. Settled on the Pizza Con Carne (£12.50) - a layering of sausage, chicken, pepperoni, ham with cheese and marinara sauce. Pizza was out of the oven within 15 minutes in a sturdy box. Overall the pizza is pretty good - meat is as advertised and plentiful. Particularly liked the chicken over the other toppings. Marinara sauce is sweeter than expected, but the cheese was just the right amount. For some late night last.minute food, not bad at all. Would have preferred just slices over having to order a whole pie. Nonetheless a good go-to spot after some drinks

We love this restaurant. We have been to Edinburgh now for the 4th time for Fringe and Military Tattoo. Just discovered this WONDERFUL restaurant last year when we ate here 3 times. Came back this year and are back at this great find. Will be here at least 1 more time this 5 day visit. Service by waiters Jude and Mimmo was EXCELLENT..smiling, sweet personalities, helpful, great sense of humor, EFFICIENT..BOTH WERE GREAT! THE FOOD IS EXCELLENT AS IS THE AMBIANCE AND SERVICE..DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER! Complimentary after dinner drink was a plus as well..not sure what it was and forgot to ask.

My two adult children and I were warmly welcomed by a kind staff member that led us into Bar Napoli's adjacent/overflow dining room for dinner. The restaurant was bustling with business and the smells upon entering made our mouths water! Unfortunately, the waiter assigned to us was an older, impatient, grumpy gentleman. We placed our orders for drinks and a bruschetta appetizer, which was delicious. For mains, I ordered the Gnocchi Della Casa (also delicious), my daughter ordered the Tagliatelle Genovese as she is a huge fan of pesto, and my son had one of their meat-based pasta dishes. When the orders arrived, my daughter was disappointed that she instead was served the Tagliatelle Della Zia (a mushroom dish) but was too afraid of our grumpy waiter to let him know! She did ask him for some red pepper to add flavor to her dish but he never brought it. By the end of meal when we asked for our bill, he told me I had to come with him to pay for the meal with my credit card at their register due to a "poor connection" which doesn't make sense at all (as he didn't require this of the nearby tables). We think he knew we were Americans, and he knows Americans are used to tipping. Here, you have to know how much the tip will be BEFORE ringing it up on the card, it is not added afterward as it is in the United States because tips are generally not given here where servers receive a living wage. He wanted me to come with him so that I would give him a tip that he could ring up. The waiter ruined what could have been a good experience at Bar Napoli.

Two stars for the effort and for being open late. It's weird many restaurants/shops close early. So finding this one open late was a plus. Now for the food. We came here in Hope's to try their lobster meal. But to my disappointment, my server told me that they dont serve lobster anymore and needed to revise the menu. Bummer!!! I was ready to leave but knowing everything is closed already, we might as well stay and try other meal. So I tried their lasagna and pizza. Lasagna was ehhh... if you like your lasagna drowning in sauce and cheese then this is for you. Pasta disintegrated in between sauce and cheese. Overall, not impressed.

Stopped by for Lunch one day during my Euro trip and had some amazing seafood pasta. Highly recommend!

If you're looking for cheap and cheerful Italian food Bar Napoli is the place to get it. The quality isn't great; however the waiters are funny and cheerful, it's easy to get a table and the prices are low. The 3 course lunch for £4.45 (how on earth do they manage it?) and its proximity to Princes Street ensure that there are always people eating in here. I'm generally suspicious of restaurants that have huge menus and Bar Napoli has a HUGE menu, so it's probably a good idea to stick to ordering popular things like margherita pizza and spaghetti carbonara: my rationale being that if lots of people are ordering it, then it's bound to be fresh. I'd advise you to avoid the antipasti platter and not to bother with the stale bread, probably a good idea to go somewhere else for dessert too.

I had lasagna and my friend had a chicken dish. Both were full of flavor. Then we decided to treat ourselves to dessert since they are famous fir their gelato. Wow! Dessert was even better than the meal. Not sure when I will be back to Edinburgh but I will definitely return here if so.

I ordered the Haggis Ravioli as it was on my list of delicacies to eat in Edinburgh but the rest of our orders were the sweet stuff. We got the Affogato served with espresso in a moka pot which was a first time for us. The crepe and the chocolate caked served with gelato were even better. The main restaurant has Italian caricatures and murals which was a nice touch. The secondary dining area (The Hispaniola) had feels of a Spanish pirate ship which was odd for an Italian themed restaurant. The latter was the site of the Rutherford's Bar (1834-2007) frequented by famous clientele and then was transformed into a Treasure Island themed restaurant. Food was really good. I'll even come back when in Edinburgh. Service could use a little work though.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. Pork cracklins were a bit hard and crunchy, but everything else was perfect. We had fresh bread and langostinis for starters, along with a smokey whiskey cocktail, the Smoked Indiscretion! For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. Highly recommend a visit to the Devil's Advocate, if you can book a table in advance.

The Devil's Advocate is undoubtedly a treasure to find in Old Town Edinburgh, especially if you…read moreaccidentally take the News Steps to get there, only to realize you should have simply taken the steps up Advocate's Close from Cockburn Street. But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.
