Stopped in for something different from the local fare and pub food. Decided to try Italian and were happy we did. Service was excellent. We were seated right away and were able to get drinks quickly. We ordered spaghetti and meatballs, chicken cacciatore and the gamberoni pasta. All the dishes were delicious. If you like Italian food and know anything about real Italian food this isn't for you. We had been on search for dinner. Few places had no seating and others were out of so many of their dishes we settled on this place. Smelled good,good location but THT is where it stops. We ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and lasagna. The meatballs were very small and didn't taste homemade. They tasted like chef boraydee meatballs. Lasagna was not impressive either. Save your time, money and belly Another note: they kept trying to seat people by the table leading to the bathroom that was halfway into the doorway to the bathroom. 5 x and no one would sit there (could you blame them). Another note note: Bathrooms were awful with what appeared to be vomit on the walls. All stalls had swarming flies in them (50 plus) disgusting and I wish I had visited it before ordering. read more

Bella Italia is located at the intersection of the Royal Mile and North Bridge in Edinburgh. I was a bit apprehensive dining here based on the many reviews which are either highly positive or very critical, with not much in between. It's a quaint Italian food eatery with pleasant atmosphere and nice decor, and food at reasonable prices. Our waitress recommended the mozzarella sticks over the dough balls and flatbread, so we started off with those. We made sure to ask for a tomato-based sauce (pomodoro) for dipping since it comes with some chipotle chili jam which didn't sound appetizing at all. They were fine, but nothing noteworthy. We went with the margherita pizza and pomodoro mozzarella for our meals. While certainly not the best we've ever had, both were tasty and prepared using very fresh and high quality ingredients, so we were happy with our meal here. Service was quick and friendly, with no issues of rudeness some other reviews have mentioned. I would recommend a visit if you've got a hankering for Italian food in the Royal Mile area of Edinburgh. read more

Bella Italia was such a surprising gem! Located right on the Royal Mile, the location is super easy to get to. After a long day of travel and walking around the city, we were looking for a casual, filling meal which is exactly what we received. The staff was knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. Even though the restaurant was packed, our waiter was quick and our food was out in less than ten minutes. This being said, we never felt rushed and were able to enjoy our bottle of wine while people-watching as people walked by on the Royal Mile. I don't recommend this place at all. Reasons? 1) Host came over and asked us to leave within a minute of paying the bill through the online app. Both my wife and I were incensed over such rude behavior. We had been at our table only an hour, and much of that time was waiting for the food. Nowhere in Scotland had we experienced that. 2) The lasagne I ordered was lousy! The flat lasagne noodles they used were essentially invisible since they were paper thin. In the US, lasagne noodles are thick and give the dish some weight. Our waitress told us the sauce was "meaty" but in all honesty, I did not see a single chunk of beef or sausage in it. In order to give the dish some structure we had to add some garlic ciabatta bread to layer the "lasagne" over. It had the texture of a bowl of spaghetti sauce, but without the sphagetti. BTW, we tried to eat at a Bella Italia in Inverness, and since we did not have a reservation, were willing to wait. But we were told, it was "first come, first served", but they would not even take our name on a wait list. Just told us to leave. Amazingly poor customer service. Really unimpressed read more

I really can't begin to convey how pitiful this business is and our waiter in particular (Dan or Man the man as he says... over and over) The Waiter Let's start with what I seriously believe to be unstable hazard to patrons. He berated my table and others with a pseudo Italian accent and even sexually harassed one of our tables females calling her his "ex girlfriend" to his other wait staff at an attempt at a joke. When we complained about the time it was taking to get our orders after 3 surrounding tables of similar meals were all served what did "Dan the Man" do? He argued and berated me and my table for 10min! Until the manager had to get involved. Saying it takes a long time to cook food and that it was our fault for ordering appetizers? Then when we did get our food one order was wrong and how long did it take to cook their made to order pizza? 7min this time! So what happened last time Dan? Why did it take so long? I can't understand how in this day in age someone like him is employed and allowed to harass and argue with customers like that. The food If it was simply a bad waiter I would have conceded and gave this place more stars, however the food was equally as bad on all orders! The pizza's of which we ordered three were all burnt, thin, stiff, and lacking any cheeses or sauce. This is some of the toughest, most cardboard like pizza I have ever tasted in my life. I don't think it is made to order and I dont think they have competent kitchen staff either frankly. The speciality pizza's were lacking ingredients and using sub par quality ingredients. Everyone at my table noted how downright absurd the quality was here. I can't understand how this place has a licence to operate. Overall Avoid this place at all costs. It has a nice interior and location, thats about all it has going for it. The wait time is long, other reviews mention similar issues, it has from what I can tel now a track history with downright appalling customer service and food quality. They leech on tourists that are unsuspecting looking for the first place that looks nice to eat at and scam them of money with awful food and an unstable staff. Welp...we had had a great time here the previous year and returned to find it quite different. A busy, bustling noisy place ... we loved the atmosphere. We are all retired professional people in our 60's and were having a great time. We were told that we needed to be quiet because a table had complained. Listen, we were a group of 8 sitting smack in the middle of a touristy loud restaurant. Are you kidding me? Do you suppose the manager didn't like Americans? Or perhaps the complaining table? Ok so, this is not an authentic Italian. It doesn't try to be. This is a chain of restaurants that provides a decent quality restaurant food Italian Style.. It is not for a formal occasion. We arrived pretty ravenous after a swim and wanted somewhere to sit and something to fill our bellies with. On arrival we were greeted and invited to anywhere we'd fancied. The table was bare save napkins and cutlery. Our waitress provided the menus. We took wine and I had a pasta with prawns and chilli. Lovely. Now for the best part: they have just recently introduced "mini desserts" - Yes sir. You can order 3 or 5 desserts and they come in shot glasses - pannacotta, banana toffee (Banoffee), tiramisu, cheesecake and a deep chocolate ganache like thingy. Brilliant for sharing and this was simply wonderful in execution and taste. if you want authentic Italian, go to an authentic Italian. Really enjoyed our dinner here one night. The level of service here is amazing. Every single staff member was extremely friendly and welcoming throughout our whole time here. At one point while eating our meals my coat had fallen off the back of my chair and a waiter noticed and put it back on my chair which was such a lovely gesture and left me really impressed. The food here was amazing! I got the Pollo a la Crema which was full of flavour and for desert I got the Cookie Dough which was superb. Bella Italia is a chain Italian restaurant with various locations around Edinburgh. This one on North Bridge seems to always be packed, I guess it attracts the tourists. The restaurant itself is nice enough while attempting to maintain authenticity. The staff are usually nice but the service can be a little slow due to how busy it is. But everything just seems a little bland and boring, as it is just another chain restaurant. It lacks the charm that those authentic little Italian restaurants have. The menu offers your standard Italian food, and if you look online you can usually find money off vouchers. Hence my reason for ever going. I usually end up getting a panini or burger, I know that isn't exactly Italian but looking at my dining partners pasta I have never been too impressed. And I like chips. I will say that their "Godfather" dessert is pretty good. I am a sucker for fatty, chocolatey, ice-creamy desserts that come in big bowls and that does just that. I would probably give this place a miss and head to one of the more authentic Italian restaurants because the food will be miles better. read more

Bella Italia is a series of Italian restaurants which are open up and down the country. This one is situated on the Royal Mile and so is certainly targetting the tourists. As a result, none of it is particularly cheap and most mains cost £10 or more, especially if you go for the seafood. I came here with some friends a few months ago. Although the food was good, you can definitely find better in the locality for far cheaper. The menu has a good range of authentic Italian dishes and I went for the penne with chicken in a roasted pepper and wine sauce. Our food took a while to arrive, but when it did it was served in decent portions and tasted pretty good. Bella Itali has some nice food on offer, but you'll probably go away expecting more for your money. read more

I went with a group of 6 and we waited 20 minutes for a table, which was okay. When we finally got seated, our waiter came to take our order. When we said that we'd just be ordering desserts, we were then told by the waiter that this "wasn't a coffee shop" and then told us that we were "honestly not worth holding a table for"; we immediately left afterwards. This waiter gave us the rudest customer service we have ever experienced, as we were willing to spend money there. I went to Bella Italia for lunch and the food was great! We tried a dessert sampler which was also amazing! A few days later after dinner went group and I were looking for dessert and thought we would stop in. They made us wait 20 minutes for a table which isn't a problem because there is six of us and it is a busy time and a smaller location. However, once our waiter comes over to us he kicks us out and informs us it is not worth it for him to serve us just dessert. He was extremely rude and could have handled the situation much better. He embarrassed us and handled the situation very unprofessionally. Sorry but get off your high horse this is not a 5 star Italian restaurant, you don't have the clout to act like this. Few minutes late, he asked the people form behind me go to the table before me. What does he mean first come first serve? .. Fine, I waited for another 10 minutes. Great food in general. We ate here a few times while in Edinburgh. It was around the corner from our hotel and easy to find seating during busy evenings when we didn't make reservations. Their pizza was so good. It had the right amount of sauce and cheese with the perfect amount of crunch to the crust. I have to say I was very glad I found this place our second day of visiting. We were greeted and seated pretty quickly and our waiter was actually our waiter each time we visited, but I think that was just a fluke. LOL. He was spot on. We didn't have to ask for anything for the most part. He was there and refilling glasses, taking orders, and bringing napkins. If you are near the Royal Mile, stop in.
