I could never imagine coming to Scotland and eating Italian food, but I'm so glad we did. The service was excellent, and the food was delicious. It has a really cute vibe and atmosphere, very family style oriented. For appetizers, we got the bruschetta and the caprino e pera. Both were phenomenal. I also got the pasta special for the day, which was a homemade pasta with Gorgonzola, wild mushrooms, and Italian sausage. Highly recommend getting a daily special. For dessert, we split the sticky toffee pudding and the vanilla ice cream, strawberries, and Bailey's dessert (the name escapes me). Oh, and it had the best espresso martini I've ever tasted. My brother in law heard this place was great from our hotel bartender if you want good Italian. We got four meals and nobody was happy. We all thought it was "fine". We did get takeaway and it was quite expensive. My food was nearly £30. Also I ordered focaccia but got garlic bread so I received the wrong, cheaper item. The garlic bread was the best item I had, and I didn't even order it. I got pollo e pepperoni. I didn't see pepperoni on the list of ingredients but I assumed it's in the name, so it must be there. Nope. That's on me I suppose. I don't eat Italian often so I just assumed it would come with pepperoni. The chicken was good but not great. My in-laws all said the pre-packaged pasta from Mark and Spencer's was better than their meals. read more

Mamma Roma Ristorante 5.0++ One of the very best meals we had as a family was at Mamma Roma Ristorante. The restaurant has an extensive menu and wine list. We started or our meal with a nice selection of cocktails. We followed with a nice selection of appetizers. Our main courses included fish and pastas dishes. All were excellent. They have an especially large selection of Italian wines and at reasonable prices. We topped off an excellent meal with an assortment of deserts. I usually don't eat Italian out but the reviews on this place was good so I had to try and I'm glad I did. I got an app, bread, pasta and dessert and I wasn't disappointed at all. The bread to me Was probably the best. They make all their bread from scratch and u can tell. I had just the plain Focaccia... I could tell it came out right from the oven to my table. Usually places like they only give you like 4 pieces but this bowl was full of bread. The pasta was good... I wish it had more meat in it. The dessert was different: lemon ice cream with frozen limoncello inside of it!! Overall I would recommend checking out this place. read more

This was our first meal in Scotland. We had a completely miserable train ride where we had to stand all 2 hours of the trip and we just wanted something quick and easy for dinner. The manager and/or owner, a lovely italian lady, said that she had a table in the smaller bistro side but that we would have to eat in somewhat of a hurry because she needed the table after about an hour and 15 minutes. My partner was looking at reviews and not sure which site but said that a lot of people included this detail in their review so we started thinking this was her gimmick to turn tables quickly. Either way, we didn't feel rushed at all. We both got the chicken parm although it was called soemthing different on the menu. It was great. The service was great. We needed a relatively quick meal and ended up at Mamma Roma. A space was made for us and we sat down. A large menu, lovely service, nice drinks (we liked the mocktails) and great food. They offer a shared pizza and pasta dish, which works out very well. In addition we had an interesting ravioli, a couple more nice pizzas and a tasty pork tenderloin. I ordered via the justeat app. meal was 24.50. I ordered aglio olio. I received approx 15-20 pieces of pasta that cost 8.50. much of it has spilled out into the plastic bag used for delivery. I had to pour the contents back into the container before putting it in the microwave. I could have made a better aglio olio from the contents of my cupboard, it would have been cheaper, but wanted a treat. the calamari was a bit better, but the salad that came with it was wilted, and had one quarter of a tomato with two pieces of wilted lettuce. the garlic bread with cheese was the only thing that filled me up somewhat. just shocking. I reckon the restaurant sees the address, and knows it's unlikely I'll turn up at their door, because they're so far away. My meal of 24.00 fitted onto a small plate! read more

Oddly you have two restaurants next door to each other serving the same menu. The bistro less formal and smaller, serves the same menu as the larger restaurant next door. The food is solid, but not outstanding. The service is outstanding, friendly, and fun. Prices are moderate to low. read more

I'll get straight to the food, first trip I had one of the specials, Mezze Lune. Little pasta pockets stuffed with goats cheese in a creamy tomato sauce. Yummy. Second trip, we couldn't get a table. Waited for 20 minutes then left. Third trip I had Fieleto Diana, which was £18 but they gave me like half a cow served with a sweet onion sauce. A three course lunch menu for under £7 is always a winner in my book, and the fact that Mamma Roma's is an Italian restaurant sealed the deal for me. This is the type of place that I love; the type of place that feels like you've just come for lunch in the kitchen of a big Italian family. We were warmly welcomed even though it was absolutely mobbed when we went, and seated pretty much straight away. The lunch menu has restricted choices, but quite a bit of variety. I had the delicious Minestrone for starter, it was delicious with plenty of pasta in it, and then the lasagne for my main, piping hot with creamy cheese sauce...delicious. I could hardly fit a desert in, but I did my best with a portion of lemon sorbet which was really refreshing and ended the meal perfectly. All our courses were served in good time, and even though the place was busy we were attended to really well, and asked if we were ok or needed anything about three times. I would 100% recommend the lunch menu in here, because you'll be hard pushed to find a better lunch deal in the City. read more

It is *casual*, not fine dining, but sometimes that suits the bill. The staff are friendly and speak to each other in Italian (if that is important to you!). The house red is distinctly drinkable and the service is fast and friendly. We walked in here on a whim before going to Wicked and ordered a pizza & a pasta, with two house reds and a coffee. The food came out in around 10 minutes and was fresh and tasty. The bill came to £30 and was provided swiftly, knowing that we were going to a show (from pleasant small talk when taking our orders). I had to write a review about this restaurant.. The food is amazing. You can taste that the pasta is fresh. The price is affordable. The staff is a bit serious but you can crack a smile from them if you start a conversation. If you are around Edinburgh you should try this family owned restaurant. This is really your average run-of-the-mill Italian restaurant. We made a reservation, but really did not need it. There was only one other party at the restaurant when we got there, though it may be busier with playhouse traffic. As for food, the prices are reasonable, the food was good (but nothing great or unusual) and the service was fine. The decor and music in the restaurant was a little cheesy. Though the food was good, I don't think I would waste my time going back there again as there are plenty of great restaurants in Edinburgh to go to instead. read more

had Mothers Day lunch there with my son and his girlfriend. My son had booked the lunch. The food was delicious. However the thin waiter with the red hair was very rude to my son 3 times, making fun of his size. It was not funny, and definitely not funny 3 times. Central, overpriced and quasi Italian, that is Mama Roma. Its personnel treats you more like a takeaway customer than a restaurant guest. The menu contains most of the popular Italian dishes, however, most of them come in small postions, especially the starters, and have bland taste due to improper cooking. Perhaps the management wants to get by thin and buys the cheapest ingredients possible. On top of that, the prices are true rip off for the quality you get. read more
