We used to patronize Gurnee Donuts every week for years...years. The following trends drove us away... Over time the donuts got smaller...much smaller; probably about a third smaller than they used to be. Did the prices goes down? No. Did the prices stay the same? No. Guess what? They went up. That's a good business model. No matter what time you get there: 7am ; 7:30 am ; 8am ; 8:30 am they are half empty. You can never get the donuts you want. I'm talking about standard donuts: bismarks ; chocolate cake ; buttermilk ; etc. Lastly, the straw that broke the Ube's back. They have gotten nuts over the Dictator's 'orders'. NO matter how well we 'complied' with their social distancing, only five inside and the rest have to wait out in the rain, cold, heat, etc....we got yelled at. The party in front of us in line, just inside their front door, moved up to the next position in line. The party that just got served at the counter left. We opened the front door to that them out. We walked in to stand on the spot that the party in front of us had occupied, and had just vacated. The lady 'in charge' (who btw we had never seen before in like 10 years of visiting) went ballistic on us. No reason, just told us to get the hell back outside. We tried to explain that the line had moved up. She is nuts. She is treating her customers like animals. There is a much better way to treat people. if there was something wrong then tell us; don't yet at us. We drove several miles to give you our business...during a time when you need every single dollar. How rude. how nasty. how absolutely stupid. If you're so scared about this stuff then don't open up at all. If it's so bad then the petty little rules that you've implemented won't do anything at all. Good bye. We did a search here on yelp and found a place with much bigger, better, fresher donuts...slightly cheaper. CJ's in Zion. They haven't given us a crumb of trouble...just great donuts and a big friendly thank you. read more

Gurnee Donuts has finally reopened after being closed for 10 months, due to repairs after a fire. Thank God they're back. The Apple Fritter (capitalized because it is THE Apple Fritter to which other apple fritters bow down) is probably the best thing to come from the village of Gurnee. The other donuts are great too. Nothing fancy, just the classics. There's no skimping, no tiny blob of custard on one side of the Boston Creme - the fillings are generous and the donuts are a good size (the Apple Fritter is large enough to share, though perhaps too delicious to share). Speaking of generous, the Asian lady who owns this store has ALWAYS given me 1-2 extra donuts with my purchase. I order six and come out with eight. This is not something that I expect or take for granted. Just one more reason I will always gladly buy from Gurnee Donuts. read more

While we were visiting our daughter in Lindenhurst (near Chicago) I mentioned that I wanted to get some donuts for breakfast. She recommended the Gurnee donut shop. I wasn't disappointed! They have a huge fresh assortment and if you want a similar version of what they have, like my daughter wanted cake donuts with toasted coconut on top, they made some for us. My personal favorite is their fried cinnamon roll. I bought a dozen of a variety of them and cut them in to pieces to share. They were all very good. You can't go wrong at this place! read more

Finally tried Lee Donuts in Libertyville, Gurnee Donuts beats it hands down! I still stand by my original review. I hope this place never goes out of business. My favorite donut shack! The owner is very friendly and helpful. The best donuts are the french glazed and dipped, old fashioned glazed and dipped, chocolate cake and best in class apple fritters. On a good day, the owner will toss one or two in as a favor! The quality is great and the value is even better. They take credit cards when the owner's square payment attachment is working from her cell phone. Cash is a better option here. Buy local and get a better product at a better value! read more

These are some amazing donuts! My in-laws live out this way so I always try to pay a visit whenever i'm in town and they never disappoint. They can seriously give the city donuts a run for their money. The old fashioned donut is mine and my daughter's favorite, but the blueberry and apple fritters are amazing as well. The family who owns it are SOOOO super nice and recently recovered the shop after 2 fires hit them last year - I am so happy they are back up and running and better than ever. They even remembered me! AND they added amazing gourmet coffee that tastes exactly like viet coffee - sweet and strong...love it! The fact that they are still a local moms and pops shop and so highly admired in the community makes them a must visit for anyone in the Gurnee area! read more

On our recent trip, we got chocolate, maple bacon, and red velvet donuts; an apple fritter; and a couple of cinnamon rolls. You can tell that all of these were fresh and made with care. I have known Kevin for years and I am ashamed to say that I have never tried one of his donuts until this past Sunday. I went to Donutfest in Wicker Park, a festival of donuts in which Gurnee Donuts was one of the participating vendors. Their offering for the show was a taro root donut. The donut in my opinion is the best practical use of the vegetable in any pastry or dessert I have ever tasted. Wanted to love these donuts, but felt after tasting that I was left with only a feeling of like. The texture of the donuts were light and airy, but the biggest issue was the greasy after taste. The bavarian cream donut had too little cream, 2-3 bites to actually get to the cream. The cream also had a bland taste. So, overall had high expectations, and felt they were just ok. In fact, Tim Horton's donuts (available in Michigan and Canada) are superior to these. read more

Went here this morning with my kids. The donuts were great, and I was happy to support a local, family run establishment. If you go in the morning, there are a number of "regulars" there at the tables who meet there for breakfast and are a friendly bunch. We stayed and had some of our donuts there for breakfast. They had balloons for the kids (donuts AND balloons - my kids really hit the jackpot this morning!) and Kim threw in a couple extra donuts into my box of a dozen, which was a nice touch.
