Overall: Satisfied with the taste & large portions, dissatisfied with slow service and frequent incorrect orders. - Would I return?: I return because my friend loves the noodle soup here, and I think the food is good. My Food ---------- * Ordered- "Pad Thai with Tofu", "Shrimp Panang Curry", and a side of white rice. * Flavor & Taste- The Pad Thai and Curry are good, but they don't stand out over other Thai places. * Order again?- Yes, I would order either again. * Portion Size vs. Price- Typically around $13-18 for an entree, but they give very large portions that I always take home for leftovers. * Menu Variety- Typical Thai menu The Place -------------- * Atmosphere- Thai-style, not super modern. Moderate amount of seating. Good small bathroom. * Service- Nice waiters but they've gotten my order wrong multiple times. They always correct it, but the food also takes a long time to be made. * Crowd Levels- Fridays/Saturdays 5pm moderate, not that crowded. * Cleanliness- clean * Location- Right next to a railroad, nice neighborhood * Parking- Large parking lot

The past week marks the second time we've been to Gumrai in the past two years and our sentiment across both instances is about the same - some hits, some misses, overall decent experience. There's been ample seating for us to do walk-ins despite coming on Friday evenings during prime dinner hours. There's also a convenient parking lot next to the restaurant, removing the need to worry about finding street parking nearby. The service here has been solid and anything we needed was always taken care of promptly. The food however is where we had mixed feelings. As a big fan of crab rangoons, Gumrai's crab rangoons are fantastic. They are larger than most others I've seen at other restaurants and provide for very fulfilling bites with plenty of filling. It also comes in a serving tray shaped in a boat if you're dining in. We also ordered two of the house specialties - the crispy catfish pudped and the roasted duck curry. Both were overall okay. The crispy catfish's outer layer was pleasantly light despite being both deep fried and then stir fried. The dish also packs a nice kick if you opt to keep it spicy. The flavor though felt a bit lackluster and I couldn't tell if it's from the combination of ingredients that just didn't quite work for me or if they needed to add something to bring out the flavors more. The roasted duck curry was overall solid, just a bit inconsistent with the duck. Some pieces (generally the fattier parts) were great but then other parts that were meatier were on the drier side. I also paired our food with a Thai ice tea, which was on the better half of thai iced tea's I've gotten from Thai places.

We've dined here twice now and enjoyed both visits equally. Gumrai has a great location with ample off-street parking. The décor is simple but bright and cheerful. Umbrellas hanging from the ceiling add a nice touch. The hard chairs are not fanny-friendly, though. The extensive menu offers both Thai and Chinese specialties. I began with tom yum soup with tofu. The fragrant broth had just the right balance of hot & sour and was stocked with chopped mushrooms and large cubes of fried tofu (yummy ... actually "yum" is Thai for "mix"). The "small" bowl was more than I could finish. My companions had praise for the equally well-stocked wonton soup. Cucumber salad was freshly prepared and the portion was generous. Chicken pot stickers (fried) were excellent and the accompanying sauce was thicker and more flavorful than Chinese soy+rice vinegar. Our party ordered 3 entrees - sweet & sour chicken, pepper steak, and "peanut sauce delight" (with chicken). The kitchen heeded my companions' requests to tone down hotness, nonetheless the dishes were still flavorful. The beautifully plated "delight" arrived barely lukewarm and had to be rewarmed in order to delight. Our server took the time to explain various dishes and answer questions. Thai restaurants tend to serve items in no particular order, sometimes bringing out everything at once, but here, our meal was paced "western style." Aroy!

Visited here on a Monday night, a few customers, plenty of pickups. Nice quiet dinner. Service was great having only one waitress... Started out with shrimp and veggie tempura, this is a meal on its own!!!! Make sure to ask for extra dipping sauce. Entree went with chicken tom yum noodles, a little spicy but good!!! On the side ordered beef pad see you... yes, my eyes were bigger then my stomach!! No room for dessert. Will come back!!!

I pass by Gumrai Thai from work to home all the time and finally decided to check it out. The interior is spacious and cozy, providing a comfortable dining atmosphere. I sampled a variety of dishes: crab rangoon, red curry, panang curry, pad thai, pepper steak, and a sip of their pho soup. The food gives off a very homey vibe and the portions are generous. I loved how big the crab rangoons were, though you taste more cream cheese than crab. Still delicious! The panang curry with tofu and the pad thai were standout dishes--flavorful and satisfying. The pepper steak, however, tasted like an ordinary stir fry I've made at home and didn't impress me as much. The pho soup had a unique twist which was new but enjoyable. For the spice level, we opted for a 2 and added chili oil on the side. The service was good, adding to the overall pleasant experience. While it wasn't the best Thai food I've ever had, it was still delicious and worth returning for. I'll be back to try more items on their menu!

Ordered to-go ... Basil Fried Rice with Shrimp (spicy), Pad Thai, and the Peanut Sauce Delight--all were excellent ... The Basil Fried Rice had perfect texture--not sticky, just right ... Pad Thai was flavorful and balanced, and the Peanut Sauce was straight-up awesome ... Solid spot for Thai takeout. Definitely ordering again ...

    Khao Soi Curry Noodle*

I heard many great things of this restaurant and I was finally in the area to try it. The young man at the door was very nice, greeted me and brought me to my table. I ordered the sampler platter which had 3 Crab Ragon (which were pretty good, the homemade sauce was different then the normal sweet & sour sauce), 3 Fried Pot Stickers (which were very tasty with the sweet soy sauce), and 3 Egg Rolls (which were very disappointing. It had so much cabbage in it and no taste of anything else. ) I also ordered the Khao Soi with Fried Tofu and specified that i want Crispy Tofu. It was fried for sure but it was like they pre fried it and then put it in the curry. It wasn't Crispy at all. The noodles were luke warm not hot in temperature. I've had Khao Soi before and it's usually more flavorful then this. You usually taste the spiciness from the curry, they usually put pickled cabbage in it for the tartness with the lime. But unfortunately they didn't have pickled cabbage. They had Shallots, cilantro, ginger and lime. Overall it was ok. If you ask if I would be back. Unfortunately, no I will not be returning to this restaurant. Also, the ambiance was very clean. But in the women's restaurant it smelled like someone was smoking inside or near there. It smelled really bad. The One Star is for the only young man with glasses serving who tried hard to make everyone happy. I understand working in a restaurant where your not familiar with the food can be hard. I feel the young boy needs a bit more training on Thai food.

Quiet place I went there last weekend and this time I did not have a good experience. Place was empty. Plenty of take out orders. One guy had his headphones on and was screaming and laughing. He did that for 15min until he realized that there are customers sitting in the restaurant. The service was very slow. May be they had new staff, but we did not like the service or the food this time. We ordered soup and we said we gonna share, but still they came and left soup at our table and went inside. We had to wait 4-5 min for someone to come out, so we can ask for bowls and spoons. Soup was not so amazing. We tried Magnolian Tofu, which was nothing like that but saturated with high salt soy sauce. Fried rice were fine. We had asked for chilli oil when we placed our order but nothing came with it. Again we had to wait for someone to be seen, when we asked for again, they got us sriracha sauce. When asked, they said that this is the only thing we have. Food was below average this time and service was bad. We were disappointed by our visit.

This place really has amazing food, I loved it. I was here with couple other friends on a Friday night, we got a table immediately (place didn't see to be fully occupied). It took little more than usual time for someone to attend to us. The lady who attend us was super cool and witty, really enjoyed the conversations with her!! Ordered Papaya salad, pad Se ew, Pad keemao and Pad woonsen. food could have arrive little early but it's worth the wait. Papaya salad was super good, although it was bit spicy for me(ordered medium, should've done mild maybe). Portions were great and other dishes were delicious but Pad Kee Mao is my absolute favorite. It's a perfect balance of sweet and spice for me. Definitely worth the visit !!!

We tried a mix across the menu, and what stood out right away was how many dishes can be made vegan, which makes it a great option for vegetarians or mixed groups. A few must-tries for me: * The Thai wrap -- DIY style and easily one of the more fun dishes on the menu * Red curry * Curry fried rice * Basil dish The papaya salad was also really well done and worth ordering. Portions here are generous -- most mains are easily enough for two people, so it works really well if you're sharing across the table. For the amount of food you're getting, pricing felt very reasonable (around $20-30 per person when sharing), which makes it a strong value spot in the suburbs. It's also on Resy, so if you have an Amex Platinum or Gold card, you can use your dining credit here. Overall, a solid pick if you're looking for flavorful Thai food with good portions and plenty of vegetarian-friendly options in the Arlington Heights area.

On the most recent occasion, we had a very picky toddler with us, and the staff noticed she wasn't eating and brought an off-menu item to better cater to her bland palate. That was very kind! For the rest of us who enjoy flavor in our food ;) the regular restaurant menu has a lot to offer. My usual orders are the Panang Curry or the Beef Salad. We ordered from Thai House Restaurant! I was in the mood for some Tom Yum Veggie Soup and Pad See-Iew. We also ordered Hawaiian Chicken and Fried Rice. For starters we had Mee Krob and Fried Vegetarian Won Ton. The Mee Krob is one of my favorites. The sweet and sour sauce mixed with crispy rice noodles topped with fried tofu is really good. And the fried veggie won ton has a perfectly seasoned tofu stuffed inside. The Tom Yum Veggie Soup had that yummy tang that hit the spot. The veggies still had a nice crunch to them. The Pad-See-Iew was sweet but not too sweet. What I really love are the veggies and the smoked / charred taste to them. It's like the wok has years and years of seasoning embedded in it. So good, The Hawaiian chicken was cooked just right. It was not dry and was very juicy and it was great with the fried rice.
