Went there for lunch. Started with stuffed mushrooms and mozzarella sticks which were very tasty.Enjoyed the salad bar, which boasted fresh vegetables and real bacon bits along with some fresh bread. I've been here a few times, and since I don't live in the area I don't get there too often. Middle of the road 'American' fare, helpful and speedy service, and fair prices. There's a small salad bar, which is always well stocked with a great variety of salad items, as well as items you might not expect to put on a salad, like cottage cheese. If you go, try the French onion soup - delicious broth, chock full of onions and very cheesy. Grumpy's is a good reason to cross over the border from Woonsocket to Bellingham. read more

Lobster roll with shredded lobster meat from a can? they used to have the best, with fresh lobster pieces, now it is uneatable. fried calamari used to be very good, now it is deep fried clumps of batter with a bowl of peppers on the side. i heard that there had been some changes in management/chefs, and if so, they were changes to the wrong way. very unfortunate. it seems that cost cutting efforts have been put in place in a big way, and it shows. read more

i'm new to the area and, needing an affordable restaurant with a large variety of food, a friend who grew up here recommended grumpy's for a belated mother's day lunch. i have to say, i'm very grateful for her recommendation. service was pleasant and quick. the food was good and freshly prepared. my mom and i both went for seafood: she got the baked stuffed shrimp, and i got the seafood stuffed haddock. she was happy with her shrimp, but i was over the moon about my seafood stuffing. the seasoning was excellent, and the seafood was plentiful (both in the stuffing, and the actual piece of haddock). we also both started with rhode island style clam chowder (clear broth). the chowder had huge flavor, though it could have been hotter. my brother, visiting my st. louis (a landlocked state) opted for the fried clams and they were fried PERFECTLY. they were crisp without too much breading, and the tender seafood was juicy and delicious. my dad got the grumpy's burger which he ate right up, and my significant other opted for the french dip. he said his sandwich was delicious, but the jus was a little salty. french fries had by the men appeared to be handcut, and were fried a nice deep, golden brown. overall, we had a great experience, and lunch for 5 at under $90, which is pretty affordable in my book, considering three of us had seafood entrees (not lunch portions). being new to the area, we have a lot of places to try. but we will definitely come back to grumpy's someday. read more

I think the problem here is that they can't decide if they want to be a Bar or a Restaurant. Clearly they cannot be both. They really need to just expand the bar into the small dining area to the right. It's a BAR, and a loud one. Theres no separation and who can have a quiet night out to dinner there with all the loud noise and bar chatter. I went in tonight and you're greeted at the entry door in a cloud of cigarrette smoke because they apparently allow that and smokers are too lazy to walk away from the entrance. Then you make it to the 2nd set of door to see some chic groping her man at the bar. This is not a place to go out and eat. It's becoming a dive Bar. I left because it was way too noisy. I've been visiting Grumpy's since I was a kid and I've always loved it. What you need to understand going into it is that it's bar/pub food, i.e. you're not coming there for an angus steak. In addition, you're not going to get a brightly lit and gleaming restaurant. In my experience they have great sandwiches and Itailan entrees, plus their salad bar is pretty delicious. I strongly recommend the ultimate chicken sandwich - I get it everytime and it's some of my favorite chicken ever. Their fries are really great, too. Always friendly service and a good bar area if you want to watch the game, but the dining area is nicely separated so you can feel more set off from the group. Also a great beer selection. read more

I got a Groupon for this restaurant and was kind of weary after seeing the mixed reviews but my crew of 6 had a great time and enjoyed our meals! I had the prime rib and it was pretty darn good! We started with the nachos with chili and loved them! The chili was chunky and full of flavor. Two of my friends got quesadillas and were happy. Overall, we enjoyed our time! It is great if you're looking for some good buffalo nacho dip, burgers, and delicious lemonade. On Fridays, it has Live music, which can be a little loud considering the place is not too big. But the pub food is pretty good. I came here twice with two different groupons. It was satisfying. Not sure if I would come here without the groupons. Let me start this by saying that I used to be a big fan of this place, but after my last 2 visits I will never go back again! The food used to be very good and fresh. The last 2 times we ate here the quality was literally horrendous and not a picky person. Examples 1. Grilled chicken sandwich. Bread was soggy, and there must of been half of a raw onion on it. That was my gf's meal. I got the steak tips and stuffed scallop platter. Stuffed scallops? No try small scallops with a little bit of bread crumbs thrown on top. And the tips? Tasted like they were weeks old and had no freshness to them at all. I could literally cut them in half using only my fork! I added sautéed mushrooms and onions, because funny enough they didn't come with the tips. Found it very weird that the waitress walked to the back and right back out with them, showing me they weren't freshly sautéed. This meal was our last straw. 2. On our last 2 visits their waitresses were god awful. One was completely new and it showed. She was a lady in her late 40's to early 50's. She was a very nice person but she either needed better training or a different job because it didn't fit her. Our other waitress the time before that was much worse. I asked her for a 2nd beer and literally 20 minutes later I was still sitting there starting to get withdrawals. She stayed at the server screen with pissed off faces and body language because it seemed like the POS system wouldn't do what she wanted. She walked by once or twice, still no beer! She also may have forgot to put in our food but based on how bad the quality is it could just be that the chef sucks! I wrote a novel and I still don't feel like I've really made my point.. I hope if you read this you realize I took this much time to really give you a honest review you can use. And I hope the owner sees it and comes to the realization that a once good restaurant is now disgusting and forcing customers away. read more

A hidden gem! I purchased a groupon to try out Grumpy's and my husband made fun of me for it, as he said, "you don't order food there." Boy, has he changed his tune after dinner there tonight. I have to say that the owner of Grumpy's needs to do some major marketing to play up the quality of the food and change people's opinions that it's "just a bar." My husband ordered one quahog, as the waitress Jessica said she could split the appetizer cost. He could not stop talking about how tasty it was, after every bite. He ordered the $10 entree special of swordfish, a baked potato, summer squash, and salad bar. He stated it was the best swordfish he has ever had. It was very buttery and seasoned with lemon pepper. After I tasted it, I realized that it's the first time I haven't tasted dried-out swordfish. I ordered the bourbon steak tips and (bay) scallops, with mashed potatoes. The steak tips were seasoned and cooked perfectly. My entree also came with the salad bar, and it was your average salad bar, nothing negative to say about it. We also ordered the potato skins, of which we brought three of the four home, as after we ate everything else, we had no room left. Oh, and my husband ordered a beer on tap, it was $3.50 for 20 oz. Finally, our waitress let us know that we had not spent all of our groupon money, so she suggested we order a dessert (to go), in order to get our money's worth. I thought that was nice of her to let us know...I was honestly going to just let it be, considering how much food we actually got for $40. Overall, if you can overlook a somewhat run-down dining area and a small salad bar, you really should give Grumpy's a try. Appearances can be deceiving. They offer the $10 entree special Monday-Thursday, with approximately 6 choices. The portions were decent, and we will obviously be going back. I just moved to the area at the beginning of last year and stumbled upon Grumpy's looking for some dinner and drinks with my wife one night. We sat at the bar and were immediately welcomed. I am a big fan of appetizer specials, which they have M-Th, so I ordered a couple of apps which were very good. They have martini specials there also which keeps my wife happy. She always orders the special of the week. We have been back periodically and have gotten to know a few of the bartenders and locals, they are always very nice. They also have free popcorn for guests, which is a little plus, because it is hard to come by these days. A lot of places in the area seem to just cater to the younger generation of bar goers, but Grumpy's seems to have all types of characters at any age. read more

This place is terrible. As soon as you walk in someone will sit you and then the wait begins. The waitress will take your drink order and then go hangout at the bar or outback for 15 minutes then come back most of the time with the wrong drinks. Other wait staff will walk by you and say nothing and ignore questions Never order beer on tap....it comes half full of beer and half full of foam. Never order martinis or margaritas.....they use the cheapest of alcohol even if you ask for topshelf and put the least amount of alcohol in it. The drinks cost around $10 so its a complete waste. If you complain it doesnt matter you'll never get stuff taken off the check regardless of how nasty it is. Management is a joke as is most of the wait staff. I just went to Grumpys after not going for about a year. (the last time was awful) . We decided to try it again....BAD MISTAKE...Being a lifetime waitress and bartender the first thing I noticed was nobody had swept or vacuummed the carpet from the night before. (whole potato skins were on the floor with other food like items)We went on a Sunday at 1:00 in the afternoon. Now just for a little fyi I have 5 kids and had a free day with my husband for the first time in a long time. We ordered bloody marys, (not good), mushrooms (first one was burnt and they didnt serve them ) wait a little longer and the new ones came out..(dry as hell) We then ordered salad many bins empty, (not happy) then we waited to tell the waitress ( its like she forgot us there) went to the bar and my husband asked the bartender for a second of his time the bartender said "im too busy" he had about 7 ppl at bar. Went after buying a groupon and I completely regret it. When you walk in no one is there to greet you, the atmosphere is dusty and out dated, and none of the food is fresh. The food is obviously frozen of from a can. Most of it had a metal taste and the salad bar is not sanitary and the rolls taste like iron. On top of that the food was over priced for the quality it was. The prices are suited for fresh and flavorful food not tasteless, canned/frozen, metal-tasting food. I have given this place three chances over the last ten years and was disappointed each time more than the last. My most recent visit is mentioned next and i will never step foot back in this restaurant. If you go, get a beer or wine- something they cant mess up. I ordered a peach sangria that was disgusting (tasted like cough syrup) i asked to trade it in for something else- they were going to charge me still. Waitress sent a manager over who completely patronized me. She did exchange the drink for my request, a rum and coke, which had literally no rum in it. I think the only good thing about Grumpy's in the loyalty of their customers, and if your not paying extreme close attention, they will get seated before you when waiting for a table after they walked in 5 minutes after you did. (this actually happened, and we over heard them bragging about it). Out side of that it only got worst from there. The restaurant is very out dated, run down and dark. Almost too dark to see how dirty the place is. We sat a booth that had some Disney animatronic wall art that had at least a few years of dust and food stuck to it. Food wasn't great, served us cold mozzarella sticks for an appetizer and burnt chicken parm. Wanted to complain but by the time the wait staff stopped socializing with their regulars and checked on us, we just wanted to get out of there. I knew this was going to be bar food,Which i usually LOVE. Food was horrible, my boyfriends steak was not even cooked in the middle, he asked for the gravy on the side, they brought it out on it, the waitress said I know you wanted it on the side but the chef said its much more tender on it.... Today was my first trip to Grumpy's. I LOVED it. Met friends there for lunch and we had a variety of items. The salad bar was small but very well stocked. I had the schrod and fries and it was delicious. One friend had a taco salad and he enjoyed it very much. Other friend and my husband had the clam bellies and they both thought they were very good. My husband said the quantity wasn't huge, but then neither was the price. Service was friendly and always checking to see about refills and anything else we needed.
