We had read some great reviews on Grumpy Goat Tavern, which inspired us to go. We were drastically underwhelmed. First, the service, while very friendly, was incredibly slow. The ambiance of this place is like a low-budget wedding venue. The chairs are low quality, uncomfortable banquet chairs. But we could have forgiven all of this if the food had been excellent. It was mediocre. My husband began with the cheese quesadilla, which was over-crisped and nothing spectacular. I had their deviled eggs of the day, which is a specialty of theirs. It was pickled deviled eggs on this evening. They were bland and uninteresting. For entrees, we had the Salmon Orleans and the Nawlins Grouper. The salmon was correctly cooked, but under-seasoned. The grouper was drastically under-seasoned and bore no discernible relationship to any Cajun we have ever previously eaten. Grumpy Goat is trying hard to be more sophisticated than it really is. Very enjoyable dinner! Ate at the bar area and was glad we had reservations as it was busier than I would have expected a golf course restaurant to be. A number of beers on tap along with large choice of bourbons and whiskeys. Started out with the cheese curds and shrimp cocktail. The cheese curds portion was very ample and the shrimp were delicious. For the main course, I had the Hawaiian chicken sandwich with mac and cheese and my wife had the Avocado BLT. The chicken sandwich was absolutely excellent and the mac and cheese was delicious. My wife really enjoyed the wrap too! On top of this, the service was really good. I just left here about 3 minutes ago and had such a horrible effing experience, I couldn't wait to tell yall about it. We got there at 115 pm and did not receive food until 220. I made sure to know the time to be as accurate as possible. It took a good 20 minutes to get water and when we did, they were all filled at odd scales. Some were filled half way. Some were filled a third of the way. So were almost filled appropriately. I asked if they were taken off another table as a joke. Also, not once did they come by to refill us. Every single entree came out at different times. I had the chicken salad which was on par with what I could make at home, so, NOT worth the over hours wait. The only time the waitress was speedy or checked on us was to give us our bill and to pick you her effing tip. I'm a huge fan of Cajun and Creole cuisine and it's hard to find a local spot. Grumpy Goat is conveniently down the street and about a 5 minute drive. Went there on Sunday and ordered the Bloody Mary since that was the drink special for the day. I usually prefer to make my own because I have been unsatisfied in the past from different bartenders. But this one did not disappoint. Crawfish cakes and cheese curds were also a great starter. I had the Jambalaya as an entree and it came with a generous amount of shrimp. Anyone that knows me, knows that I love shrimp! It was packed with flavor but not too salty and the right amount of heat. I was very happy with the dish. Very disappointed with our experience. This was our first time eating there but was really looking to forward it because of it being on a golf course and the menu online sounded very promising. We were seated at a high top near a window in the bar which is perfect for us. We were given water right away and a couple minutes later our waiter literally shuffled over to take our drink order. (No hustler there) I ordered a cosmo which tasted like it had been sitting in crushed ice forever. Horrible! I told the bartender and she was apologetic and offered me something else which I then had a glass of wine. For my meal I ordered the steak salad, medium rare. Always, the steak is sliced thinly with that type of salad. My steak came medium well and CHUNKED! Yes, chunked. What chef in his right mind would cut a sirloin like that?? When asked I told the waiter the steak was overdone. He agreed and asked if I wanted another one. As my husband was half was through his jambalaya I didn't want to have to wait so I declined. The manager came over and apologized and asked again if I wanted anything else and I said at this point, no. When the bill came they had comped us everything but one of my husbands beers, his dinner (which was delicious) and one of my wines. I appreciated that gesture and though it was anice but doesn't make our experience any better. I would have rather enjoyed a delicious martini before my meal, followed by a wonderful steak salad and paid full price. Will we go back? Doubt it and I really wanted to love this place because of the view and outside eating area. They really need to step up their game. It's been a few months since our disastrous first visit. We went with friends as I wanted to give it another chance as we were going to a performance at the college again. The experience was great! Our service was attentive, knowledgeable and efficient. They have a very unique menu and their burgers are to die for... interesting combinations and something for everyone! They also have some delicious varieties of coke slaw... It's the next day and I'm still dreaming about the food! We started with the shrimp wontons. I'm not a fan of goat cheese so I tried it but didn't indulge. My friend enjoyed it thoroughly and was pleased to have it for himself instead of having to share. It was very creamy and crisp. The only thing I'd be critical about is that the dipping sauce seemed to just be regular soy sauce which seemed like a weird choice of sauce to go with the wontons. Maybe a sweet and sour or a redone soy sauce. I had a flight ($7) for 4 of their special draft beers. I was very pleased with this, what a great deal and awesome beers on draft to choose from! After my flight, I chose ODell as my glass of beer and it was delicious! My main course was the Classic Crawfish Étoufée with dirty rice. OH-EM-GEE! I didn't even get to finish all of it but I did take it home and it was an awesome second tasting of this delicious dish. It was so good and I'm already longing to have it again. They sure don't skimp out on their crawfish either!!! Definitely a must have. I got the jalapeno cornbread that came with my meal and it was a bit dry and not as great as I would have hoped. It was still good and we ate the whole thing but not the star of the show :) My friend got the Ham and Egg burger which was very satisfying but nothing necessary to write home about. The tavern fries were good, love their cut of fries! We also got a side of the Cajun Fries and they were a bit too salty for my taste. I'd pick the tavern fries over their cajun fries if I had to choose again. I'm already planning my next visit there because I need to have that Etoufee again! I really like this place....BUT... lately the service is awful. The last time we came here, we waited forever for our order to be taken, our food and OUR CHECK. The manager noticed us waiting forever and came by to apologize and gave us a certificate for our next visit. Fast forward to tonight. If our waiter was any slower, he would be walking backwards. We waited so long for our tea. We finally get it and he takes our order. Every visit, after we give our order, we get the pickled onions and pickles. I love those things. I live so close to this restaurant, how have I not been here? We went to The Grumpy Goat on a Friday evening and had a wonderful experience. The ambiance was quite nice- a bit fancier than I thought it would be- but attire was casual to business casual. The service was impeccable, with the waitress checking in the perfect number of times. We skipped appetizers in favor of desserts, but I want to try so many of the apps (definitely coming back). The beer selection was very good, and I enjoyed a delicious margarita cocktail to start my meal. I love that dinner comes with pickles & onions & cornbread- a great way to start the meal (I ate all of the pickles). All four of us loved our entrees- 2 of us got the Louisiana Fried Chicken- it was perfection. I can't wait to go back and try it again, especially because I actually liked the vegetables. I was pleasantly surprised how delicious my dinners have been here. From what I understand, whatever this place was before Grumpy Goat, it wasn't that great. The cheese curds are my favorite! I've had them multiple times now. They have an extensive whiskey menu, and the boyfriend enjoyed his flight he chose. We love to meet at Grumpy Goat because it's midway for everybody. I am sharing this only because perhaps management should plan a little better for special holidays. We had 12:30 reservations, everyone had arrived by 12:45, we received our food at 2:00. And unfortunately cold french fries, cold macaroni and cheese for little ones. My husband and I made reservations for our 1st wedding anniversary and made a request to sit by the fire place. When we arrived they had our table saved in front of the fireplace and it was wonderful. This was our first time there, btw. The service was perfect and the food was even better. The steak special they had for their Valentine's menue was honestly the best steak ive ever eaten. Their house pickles and onions are surprisingly addicting. The food comes out in a timely manner and the portions are of perfect portion. The drinks we tried from their bar menue were also no less than perfect. The Louisiana Fried Chicken is killer good! They loose a star because they had this "secret envelope" promotion where we got a prize but was sealed in an envelope and had to hold onto it for almost two months without opening it. Was supposed to be either a free app/zert, $5, $10, or $50 gift card. We were pretty excited to come back and open it for a night out without the kids. Sever opened the envelope and it was $1 off. I'll definitely be back. These guys do a lot of dishes that are twists on classics. Although there are lots of really safe options on the menu there were a few unique dishes that make the place stand out among the hundreds of burger pubs in the suburbs. The meal started with a bang with the complimentary jalapeño corn bread that was outstanding. I got the chicken po boy and the Cuban sandwich. The po boy was served on a pretzel bun instead of a French roll and garnished like a burger, making it just a chicken sandwich with some andouille sausage. It was good but forgettable. The Cuban sandwich was piled high with pork, the homemade pickles and pickled onions were fantastic, and the corn meal crunch on the bread was a nice touch. Both pretty solid, but neither was as good as the stew and biscuits Wifey-Poo got. That was amazing. Enough spice to be interesting, perfectly browned biscuits on top of a cauldron of chicken stew. Another family member dining with us got a very forgettable creole chicken plate, but the pasta jambalaya saved the day for them. That was definitely worth the trip out to try. Definitely interesting and executed well. The house made mac and cheese was very good. The bay seasoned fries were definitely worth trying as well. I was going to rate this a 4-star because the po boy was executed poorly and the chicken plate was so forgettable, but the service was good, prices were fair, and I'm happy that there's a place in the suburbs taking chances on some unique dishes. read more

I've been here four times now, trying four different meals and none have disappointed. Unique menu items, excellent beer selection (can't go wrong with Revolution options on tap and in a can) and even better service! A few of the items I have enjoyed; seared ahi sandwich, bayou burger, meatloaf melt, bacon-jalepeno slaw and the deviled eggs du-jour. Hopefully, with some marketing, it will become a mainstay. After moving away from Elgin and coming back to visit, they actually open an awesome place in the neighborhood. Food was exceptionally better than you would expect from an Elgin restaurant. In fact, you might get lost and think you're in Schaumburg after eating here. Tuesdays are half off burgers and chicken sandwiches. They also have other daily food and drink specials. The place is very cozy and upscale which is another unlikely trait of Elgin restaurants.
