We were called to West Chicago for an emergency and hadn't eaten all day. Upon finishing, Dr. Robert insisted we hold out for a ride to St. Charles and the world's greatest Irish pub. Heard that before, Rob. McNally's is cute and all but nothing like the greats. It has a comfy cozy atmosphere that, initially, I found relaxing. Then the server showed-up with a nasty disposition and the patience of a child. After waiting entirely too long for a check-up, I ended up asking the bartender for a refill. How hard is it to just grab the server and tell her to add a drink to our tab? No can do. I was dismissed, very short and coarsely, and told to order it through my waitress. The saving grace was their menu and quality of food. The scotch egg, shepherd's pie boxty and the Guinness chocolate mousse were spot on. I had a bite of their bangers and mash and easily could order that, too. I didn't handle the bill but I can tell you the place is pricey and there's not enough here to justify it. So I've been here multiple times. And each time has been very good until last night. I even gave a very good review a few years back. My girlfriends chili came out luke warm and she said was like something out of a jar. She never said anything or I would of sent it back. The Ceasars salad she had was the opposite. It was like it was room temp, not cold. We sat upstairs and our waitress was the only one up there. Maybe was too much. I read reviews like I always do and a few reviews said same as far as food temp and service. I ignored it because I've been there four times now and the three were good. Unto my fish and chips. I always get this. Was 3 pieces of fish. Then last time two. Now I got 1 piece of fish. It seemed a little bigger but not to equal two. It tasted good but more chips than anything. The black and tan was good but hard to mess up. Im afraid this will be our last time here. There's other restaurants nearby. Oh and my girlfriends stomach been hurting since las night and still is. Great spot I stopped by impromptu on a Thursday night. The decor is cute and on brand with the Irish pub vibe. Strung lights and pub style decor. The menu has a great variety of options, many savory styled meals with fun twists. Like the crepe corned beef and the jam with the cheese curds. Great traditional Irish food! Everything I've ever had here has been delicious from their shepherds pie, boxties, bangers and mash, Rueben sandwich to their full Irish breakfast I've never been disappointed. Decent atmosphere but not great food ! I ordered the fish and chips and they were terrible. The fish was greasy and apparently had been cooked much earlier. The fries were mostly overcooked and again gave me the impression that they had been sitting for some time. My wife had the Rachel Ruben and she didn't even finish half . My niece had the burger which she ate but without much enthusiasm. And then, the waitress just presented us with a single bill, not bothering to ask if we wanted separate checks. Walked Out Due to Terrible Service I used to love McNally's, but wow... what a disappointment tonight. Walked in and stood at the hostess stand for 10 minutes -- no one in sight. Tried asking the bartender about a table, and she rudely said, "I don't seat people, go see the hostess." Except... there was no hostess. Then a server in a checkered shirt walks by with a to-go order. I ask politely if I can get a table -- "You need the hostess," she says, and walks away. Still no one helps. The place was practically empty, yet somehow everyone was too busy to do their job. Even the guitar player performing noticed and tried to help me get seated (how embarrassing is that?). Meanwhile, the bartender was focused on chatting with one person at the bar, and the checkered-shirt server seemed more interested in taking a break in the back room than helping a guest. Would've been so easy to get me a simple Shepherd's Pie. Instead, I walked out and went across the way to Gia Mia, where I was instantly greeted with a smile and had a lovely server within seconds. Now I'm happily eating pizza instead. McNally's has gone downhill -- the service is trash, the energy is dead, and judging by how things looked, I wouldn't be surprised if the food quality followed. We enjoyed the outside dining. Service was a little slow but it looked like 1 server for 3 tables outside so who knows what she was dealing with inside. We ordered a (generous) cup of potato leek soup served with a nice slice of irish brown bread; cod nuggets; brisket nachos, and reuben boxty. We eagerly tucked right into the soup and fish bites and were delighted with both. The brisket nachos were an adventure with a creamy cheddar-colored sauce under the chips. This was followed by some white cheese, brisket, sour cream, guacamole among the usual toppings. The potions were very generous (happy we were sharing) so we never made it to the boxty (though it looks amazing and we will enjoy for dinner I'm sure). Went here with my family for St. Patrick's Day. WORST service I have ever had in my life! The waitress was rude and virtually ignored our table. After ordering our meal, we waited for over 90 minutes for our meals while tables all around us were being served. Note that the other tables were seated 15-20 minutes AFTER us! The waitress not only didn't apologize for the delay, but she made up a lame excuse that 'the kitchen was backed up'. Again, everyone else was being served. Finally, we couldn't take it any more so I told the waitress to just charge me for the drinks and she could keep the food. Shortly after, someone came out with our food. The rest of my family had already left to go to the car, and I told her to keep the food. Again, NO apology. She handed me the bill, ran my credit card, and told me to "Have a good evening". UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! I will NEVER go to this place again!!! If I could give a -100 rating I would, but there is no option for that. Really need to talk to a manager but am too pissed off at the moment. Absolutely horrible service twice in a row. The second time was the last straw. 2 people in our party ordered soup to be brought out ahead of time. After waiting for awhile we asked the waitress about it and she claimed she would tell the kitchen to bring it out now. They brought it out with the food anyways 3 of our 6 orders were incorrect. They made the absolute wrong thing for one of them and switched 2 burgers. The food runner grabbed the burger with his bare hands to try to switch them which is absolutely disgusting and probably a health code violation. After 45 minutes we finally got the other 3 orders and 2 of them were still wrong and the food was cold. There was member any offer of a discount or anything. No manager came over. Just a weak apology from the waitress. On the way out, the manager said "have a good night" and none of us acknowledged her. She then said "tough crowd" in a snotty tone. We then told her about what happened and she didn't care. Dont bother coming here. You'll get mediocre food and it'll take forever and probably wrong. The food is always good and consistent. We usually get the cheese curds for starters and the fish and chips as our meal. We usually go before its peak hours for dinner (usually around 5PM) so our service has been good and attentive. The whole place can get petty packed at later hours so I would be a bit patient. Rode the motorcycle up to try a new Irish Pub since the weather here was unexpectedly awesome! Worth the trip! A nice cold pint (just one) and a Sheppard's pie were just the ticket! The pie had that authentic feel with ground meat, sufficient veggies, and gobs of melted cheese... What a great spot! Shay - The Ambassador, makes everyone feel welcome. He even came and sat at our table for a few minutes. He also introduced us to all of the locals and cruised the place like a Star. He really makes this Irish Pub feel like a neighborhood gem. We were in town for Jazz Fest and caught some live music on the patio. Great music, delicious food and Shay. What more could you ask for?!?! The al fresco area is large and connects to 3 other restaurant patios. It makes a gorgeous look for everyone. There is a lot of seating, foliage and charm. I ordered one of their summer specialty cocktails and it was delicious. The have Boxties on the menu. We had to look up what it was and this history behind it. My friend ordered a Veggie Boxty that was not on the menu, but they created it just for her. Nice touch. I ordered several sides because I wasn't in the mood for anything specific. I loved everything. The crowning jewel is the made to order donuts. I was expecting a tasty finish to our meal but - come on! They were the best I have had in a very long time. They were hot with a dusting of sugar and cinnamon. They came with 4 dipping sauces. We couldn't stop eating them until they were gone. I am still thinking about those cute little donuts! I've frequented McNally's often over the years. The new addition is quite nice and opens up a spaciousness to the darker, more intimate main area. I had delicious, crispy battered but tender fried fish and comforting potato and leek soup yesterday, with excellent service to boot! This is a great place to come by yourself to read/write (which it what I did yesterday), or for a pleasant time with family and friends. The staff would randomly sing along to the songs being played over the sound system, which was so cheerful, and then a band came in later. It has that warmth of a true Irish pub. read more

Staff made a smart comment to us on the way out after we left a good tip and almost escalated into an argument. We will not be returning after being customers for over 20 years. Best Irish pub in St. Charles at least. It certainly has Irish pride. McNally's is better than expected after going to so many mediocre Irish pubs around here thankfully. Actually has not only lots of good drinks but there's also some decent food. This is beyond the typical crap like chips with greasy meat. Came in with a friend. It was pretty quiet even though it was a weekend so it was kind of an odd feeling in here. This place certainly gets more festive at a good time. It has the typical Irish drinks. They have the usual beers on tap. I had a Guinness. It's $6.50 a pint. The beer goes good with a burger, and I was in luck as they had one I could actually eat there. I had the Vegetarian Burger. It's $12 and is a pretty big one. This has a Beyond patty with avocados, lettuce, and tomatoes. She had the fish and chips but she's evil. They looked like they were cooked nicely and she liked them at least. After this I felt lucky. It must be the luck of the Irish to stumble into this fine pub. I love this place. It makes me feel like I get a glimpse of Ireland from the menu, to the warm and friendly staff to the regulars that add to the festive atmosphere. Been to McNally's many times always a good experience friendly staff and good food. Went there for the day before st. Patrick's day, what a mistake. Ordered the Corned Beef and Cabbage, the food was cold poor quality and nowhere near the usual portions. We sent it back the 1st time and when they reserved the meal it was no better. Cold and dried out the server told us the kitchen was slammed after the weekend and although she was sorry she was told there was nothing she was allowed to do about it and there was no manager available. We haven't had a fish fry like this since 2017 when we left Illinois. We lived in Lake County IL and had several places. Everything we are doing is in St. Charles, so Lake County was too far. I took my son here for lunch a couple weeks ago. I had eaten at McNally's a long..... long time ago. I really don't recall how long ago it was, it was probably prior to 2003, maybe even the late 90's. All I really remember of my first trip was that we went to see an Irish band. The food was good, and I had a good time. I've been meaning to go back for a while, yet I always seem to end up someplace nearby. We arrived around 1:30 pm on a Saturday. It was fairly busy, as in we thought the lunch rush would be over. The manager, or owner, or both... I don't know... told us it would be a wait, but as soon as a table opened up he'd seat us. We ended up waiting for around half an hour before we were sat. There was no one before us, it's that people were sitting at their tables chatting. We were assured multiple times by the bartender and the manager/owner/both that a table was going to be leaving soon as they had paid. It's not the restaurants fault people enjoy the atmosphere so much they don't want to leave. I found it amusing. When we were sat it didn't take us long to figure out what we wanted. My 17 year old son had the Shepard's Pie and I had the Reuben Boxty. Getting a teenage boy to eat doesn't take much, but he plowed through his Shepard's Pie without saying a word. It was almost horrifying to watch him consume his meal in a speed and focus that even the group of teenage girls that walked by did not get his attention. I would tell you how it was but his comments were "ermf mmmhmmf derhermfeh" I still haven't figured out what he said. Every sentence was short and incomprehensible. I think he may have forgotten to breath. He also wouldn't share it, and I was afraid that if I tried to snag a taste he'd take my hand off. For those that aren't familiar with the eating habits of Teenage boys, that means he really liked it. As for my Reuben Boxty. This was amazing. It's basically a potato pancake with reuben fillings in it. It also came with a side of cottage fries. The Corned beef was cooked to perfection. Great flavor, juicy, tender. It wasn't stringy at all like you see with some corned beef. I could have eaten just a plate of corned beef by itself. The fries were good. Nice and crispy on the outside, but not over cooked. Just the way I like them. I thought the atmosphere was amazing. It had that old European feel to it. Very welcoming and relaxing. The place isn't as big as I remember it being, but again, it was a long time ago. Plus there is in upper level, but it was closed when we were there, we sat on the main floor. Well, we've been going to McNally's for years although not as much as we did years ago. We went early on a Friday and the place filled up quickly. It's very loud. We sat in the front at a high top. They have good beer on tap. Guinness. I had the Rueben sandwich and it was excellent but I could only eat half. Huge portions. Various sides were offered and I had the homemade chips. The chips were crispy but a little salty. My husband had the fish fry. Pretty good but a little dry. He got another helping that was much better. read more

This place is great. They serve authentic Irish cuisine. There are Irish meals here (like a boxty) that I've never had anywhere else. On Fridays they have unlimited fish and chips that are amazing! A standard hard boiled egg surrounded by a generous coating of Irish sausage and Panko. This portion is large--about the size of a tennis ball--so it's enough to share (see photo). Recommended! Soup: Potato Leek (included with entree). A thick, well seasoned soup that is genuine to its Irish roots. See photo. Entree: Corned Beef & Cabbage ($18). A generous portion of corned beef, cabbage, carrots, and potatoes. This dish is very filling and as good as you can get in Ireland. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. (See photo) Service: Marnee was a prompt, attentive, and friendly Server. Great service! Ambiance: Dark tones, with old ceiling timbers gives an authentic setting for an Irish Pub. We ate here on the patio after browsing around at the scarecrow fest, today. The manager (i think) was so nice and asked about our dog (they allow dogs on the patio) and got us seated right away. And while we understand it's busy, our server could not have looked more annoyed and crabby if she tried. She looked pissed off that she had to take our table as she was done for the day. It wasn't like we requested her or to sit in a certain section (we would have rather not had her, if it was up to us). We were a table of 5 and got our order ready before she even came to greet us. We had to flag someone down though for her to come to our table. No hello, no my name is xxx, no I'm going to be your server, just "what do you want for drinks?" Stunned, is an understatement as we've never had someone with that much attitude before. We asked to order our food, but she said she'd get our drinks first. When she came back, again, "what are you eating?" No smile, nothing. At least pretend to act like you want to be there. On to the food: My brother ordered the chicken wings, which came out raw and fatty, he was so grossed out he had to send it back, which he wouldn't do normally (we also had to flag someone else down to get our server to come back). He then ordered the bacon wrapped bacon.. and if you ever wanted to try jello-ed bacon fat... that's what you should order. We just took it home though and paid and left. We just wanted out of there. It will end up in the trash, though. So the star is for the nice manager and host, and the pretzel bites.. other than that yikes. read more
