Grumps Café is a family favorite for us. My kids and I always enjoy stopping by for a quick, satisfying meal, and it's consistently a great choice whether we're coming in for breakfast or lunch. This place a classic breakfast spot feel. You order at the counter but they assign you a table. We got the chicken and waffle and banana & chocolate chip pancakes. The waffle was not hot and had cinnamon which was a weird flavor combination with the fried chicken and gravy (which were both good). The banana & chocolate chip pancakes were very good! It's hard leaving this review, but I hope the feedback is received and adjustments are made if they want to expand their customer base beyond their loyal regulars. First, I'm a customer who might stumble in but might not return like me. The food was okay. It was not necessarily cooked to my request. The food wasn't particularly seasoned, but seasoning was provided at the table, so it's not a major issue. The sausage links didn't feel fresh and didn't have that crisp casing you'd expect on a freshly cooked sausage link. The bacon was nicely salted and crispy. They had all the condiments. I liked the self-serve drinks with free refills. My main issue was the service from the moment I was greeted -- or rather, not welcomed. I was handed a menu and told I needed to order at the register. I asked if I could sit down first and repeat that I wanted to sit down. I asked again if I could sit first, and with a very reluctant look, I was given the menu. I then sat down without any questions, no inquiries about whether it was my first time, no explanation of how things work here. Nothing. The nice gentleman who pointed me to my table and brought my food was the only one who checked on me. Besides that, no one asked if I needed anything. I was finished eating about five minutes when I realized no one was coming to check on me. I got up, went to the self-service counter, and asked if I could get a to-go box or if it would be given to me. I was told by the staff that all I had to do was ask. Not good vibes at all -- it really gave me the sense that it was a family-owned business. If this is a family-owned business, I would strongly suggest that they hold a family meeting to discuss what needs to be done to keep the business within the family or hire outside the family and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere when customers walk through the door. I'm leaving thinking... is this why the place is called Grump? That shouldn't be the thought on a customer's mind. read more

Well, I just found this place looking for all day breakfast. They serve breakfast until 3:00. The place is smallish but not confining. Very casual. Not sure if Veteran owned but flags inside pay homage to our military. This place is a little different. You are assigned a number and an animal so they know where to serve food. I was 22 with a giraffe. Cool. Don't forget your number. If you do, remember your animal. I walked in just before Noon. I ordered and paid at the counter. I had my meal almost as I sat down. As we passed Noon the eat in crowd grew so I imagine service could slow a bit but still pretty quick. I loved my meal. However, and I hate to report this, I found a small hair, not mine, in the hash. I absolutely hate that. I did not finish the hash. The hash also had a slightly sweet taste that that I'm not used to but it was good. Because I think this place has potential I will only knock one star off for the hair. Normally, I would go as low as one star. Like I said I like this place and believe they can do better. I would add that it would be nice if they checked on you one time but this place is a hybrid between self serve and table service. Everyone else here looks like they are enjoying their food. Met a friend here for lunch. The service was fine. The menu was extensive, which made me nervous. I should have stuck with their all-day breakfast menu, but opted for their meatloaf special (meatloaf, mashed potatoes, fresh spinach). We ordered at the counter, got our drinks and as soon as sat down, our food was delivered, which also made me nervous. I ate half of the meatloaf slice, which was served with a small bowl of some congealed, thick gravy that I didn't use. The potatoes were lumpy (real mashed) but not great and the spinach was fresh, not overcooked, but swimming in some flavorless oil. The meatloaf's texture was mushy. It crumbled when cut with my fork and tasted of too much Worcestershire sauce. The whole thing was messy and disappointing, and made me nauseous for the rest of the day. If I ever go back, which I doubt, I would stick to breakfast. Really, though, there are better places to go if you want diner food and a diner atmosphere. read more

Stopped here in search of mid-morning breakfast. They have a pretty big menu, but I decided to keep it simple and go with chocolate chip pancakes , which comes with sausage or bacon. The pancakes come with cinnamon butter, but I requested regular butter, which another Yelper recommended, and the staff was happy to make the change. The dine-in area was pretty busy for Monday morning ,and I also saw cars picking up curbside orders. Asked to add onions and peppers "while cooking," potatoes, however they were added after. The potatoes were chunks/cubes and lacked flavor. --Veggie omelet and we added hash inside. We order this at other venues, but this presentation was different. Veggies were not sautéed before adding to the egg and looked more like the egg was lightly scrambled instead of an omelet fold. The flavor missed the mark as well. --waffle. This was good. Not great, good. Food was not piping hot when arrived which is puzzling since the kitchen is not 30 ft away. Grumps Crofton is the BEST! We came on a busy Saturday morning with our two dogs, and the staff was very accommodating and found us a table in their warm outdoor tent. The menu is extensive, and covers all bases for both breakfast and lunch. The staff (mostly high school kids) were so kind and all went the extra mile to ensure we had a great experience! It's been quite a while since I've visited this establishment, but I can say that it's still as good as I remember. My order was take out, I ordered the Philly omelette with home fries. The omelette was decent, not great, but the home fries were very flavorful. I got pancake breakfast for the kids, which came with a Mickey Mouse pancake, sausage, and cheese eggs. They seemed to enjoy it when they ate. The staff wears grump cafe t shirt with pajama pants (don't really understand or care for this concept, but whatever. lol.). There's plenty of seating so you can bring a few friends along if you plan on dining in. The wait wasn't long at all, I Sat in my car to wait on my order because I thought it would be a while and after about 10-15 minutes the host was bringing my order out to me. I'm still a little confused by this place. It's obviously very popular, and we could tell why after trying the grumpiest melt which was exactly what we needed. But the service experience was odd to say the least. At first, I assumed that because of the name it was intentional and the staff were being purposefully grumpy or distant. Hidden gem in Crofton. This place was recommended to me by a friend and it didn't disappoint. Came on a Sunday, early afternoon. I thought it was crowded as every table inside and out was occupied. But about 30 minutes later is when the line was almost out the door. You order first, and then wait to be seated. Which, if you wait a little for a table like we did, then the timing of the food to come out is actually perfect. We had a couple burgers and some wings for lunch. Everything tasted good. Trying this cafe on a Saturday morning for brunch was a good surprise. First you check in with the hostess and she assigns you a table number if you're dining in. Then you stand in a short line and you order in person from a full 2-page menu that states Breakfast Served All Day!!! Since breakfast is my favorite meal this was a treat. I chose the Grump's Favorite Waffle topped with crispy corned beef hash & two eggs with a cold brew coffee; and he had the Country Fried Steak & Eggs with sausage gravy, toast & grits (or you can choose crispy potatoes) and a birch beer. Everything was delicious and we will certainly be back another day as their menu is intense with lots of yummy selections! I forgot about this place as it sits off the highway. I stopped in for an early breakfast. It wasn't crowded but I had no idea of how the service was going to go. When you walk in you're in a line and it's like a hospital cafeteria setup. You go through line and they give you a dinosaur figure to bring food to your table. I tried Grumps at 9:30 on a Wednesday morning. It was my first visit here and tables were pretty full. I looked for, and saw no hostess station. There were people in line at the register ordering food, so I got in line behind them thinking it was like Mission Barbecue where you order at the counter and then go get a table. Nope. He assigned me a table number and took my order. I got blueberry pancakes, sausage, and coffee. When I got to my table, I noticed that someone had wiped it and the chair off. Problem is, it was with such a wet, greasy rag that I had to use the single napkin that was provided to clean off the chair and then ask for more napkins to wipe off the table because it was not drying. At the end of my meal, the part of the table that I didn't wipe off with the napkin was still wet looking and streaked with grease. My food arrived quickly. I would've liked more butter for my three gorgeous blueberry pancakes. They looked wonderful. The sausage however, was burnt and a bit shriveled. Once I cut it open, I could see that it was pink and rubbery inside. I think it was microwaved. I couldn't eat it. I didn't have any confidence that asking for a new sausage would give me a better result so I just left it on the plate. I don't think I'll try again. I'm giving this place a 4 star because it's important to know that this is a counter service place, which means that after ordering you get no check ins, no remakes if your food isn't good, etc. I'm not a picky person and I've never had to have my food remade, but it's still nice to know that's an option. We weren't impressed with the freshness of the food, the cinnamon rolls were hard on the outside and the omelet was pretty bland. definitely a good place to go if you're looking for VERY casual and fast, but not really my style. The staff is wearing pajama bottoms and T-shirts as a uniform, and everything is very homestyle. Guests have to get their own drinks and refills, which adds to the "dirty" vibe. Breakfast is by far my favorite meal of the day, so I relish in the fact living in AA Co we have a plethora of options for delicious, reliable breakfast eats. Discovering Grump's-we decided to stray from our normal go-to morning spots to check out some of their more unique combination options. (I was drawn to their comedic, homey-feeling menu options, with creative names, and yummy plating combos). I opted for the Country Fried Steak & Waffle combo and my hubby the Spanish omelette with marble rye bread & potatoes. Picking up our order -to-go- their service was very pleasant. Staff was super friendly, hanging out in their pajama outfits, welcoming us right away and ensuring we were in and out. They plated the meals really well, adding a lot of side sauces to anticipate any at home condiment need. As for the food: Overall, while the combinations sound delicious, everything was pretty underwhelming, just an average diner meal-nothing stood out as absolutely delicious and nothing really impressed us enough to ensure Grump's would end up on our routine breakfast rotation list. The omelette was over-cooked, under stuffed, and under-seasoned. Meant to include chorizo, peppers, onions, and cheese- there was barely any chorizo inside- the eggs tasted dried out-maybe the dish needed a sauce (or salsa), and the cheese got over-baked in (added too early would be my bet)- as for the size, the cost is on par with omelettes from our other go-to places but the size was considerably smaller (seemed like a skimpy 2 egg), they also skimped on the side potatoes (though the potatoes did have a delicious, well-seasoned taste). The country fried steak was very tasteful, and they have a decent sausage gravy with a nice peppery-nip, but the waffle was nothing special (blan-flavorless- just fluffy, but needs a pep to it whether they need more butter, cinnamon, I don't know)- so while it hit the spot that morning, I wouldn't order again. It is an every-day run of the mill diner, you can get a decent meal, but compared to other breakfast eateries in the area offering bold, flavorful packed with ingredients dishes, we won't find ourselves returning to Grump's. read more

This is such a funky cool place for amazingly delicious breakfast/brunch and lunch/dinner food! We were in the mood for brunch today being Sunday, so we tried another place but found that they had a 1.5 hr wait...but then we found Grump's nearby and they had a unique and incredibly efficient counter service/reserved seat system that is just pure genius. When you check in at the front, they give you the menus and assign you a table with a numbered toy. You then get in line to order your food and meanwhile they get your table ready, placing your numbered toy on the table. By the time you are done ordering, you can easily see where you're seated and then your food I brought out to you when it's ready. And you get your own water and coffee at the stations. Super easy and help yourself to as many refills you'd like without having to be waited on! And the decor was definitely beachy laid-back vibes. Very casual and relaxed! And the food is so satisfying! I had probably one of the crispiest and most tender Country Fried Steak with scrambled eggs, grits and toast. Everything was cooked exactly the way I ordered it. We also ordered a burger with grilled mushrooms, lettuce and tomato and a side of garlic fries. Wow this burger was super thick and juicy cooked to a beautiful medium temperature. And the garlic fries were so nice and crispy the way fries are supposed to be and the garlic added such good flavor. We sprinkled some of the seasoned salt in the shaker, too. This is definitely a hidden gem. I recently found this place on google and decided to give it a try. I ordered online(you can call in also), be aware that your order has to be confirmed by the restaurant and that can take 5-15 mins. It took about 15-20 for our food to be ready after the order was confirmed. I would recommend ordering ahead if you are doing take out. There are two entrances, the entrance we went through was on the side that takes you straight to the counter for pickup. Thankfully we called ahead, the line had about 10 ppl and all the tables were occupied. The environment is similar to a local diner or mom&pop shop. Our food was ready for pickup once we arrived and we were acknowledge as soon as we walked in. Ordered waffle side of sausage, grits, french toast(3), french fries total $35 with tip. Waffles 8/10 with syrup and cinnamon butter, sausage 5/10 it was something about the texture i didn't like, grits 6/10 it could have been cooked just a little longer (i prefer my grits gritty and creamy) these were on the grittier side, my bf rated the french toast 5/10 and the fries 9/10. Well I don't know who this Grump is but I'd surely like to meet Him/Her Because this place is just totally awesome. Normally I don't even attempt to review unless I've been to a place two or three times but in this case I'm confident in doing so beforehand because of the well oiled machine I saw working in this place. You go through the front door and they hand you a menu and they tell you your number and they place some sort of plastic statue or plastic toy with a number on it on your table which will be your number when your food is delivered. You then proceed down a short aisle to the cashier/order station and order your meal. If you've chosen a beverage you take a right turn and you go down an L-shaped aisle that has hot water, ice tea, standard soda beverages, at least two kinds of coffee with creamers next to the pots. Than with your beverage in hand you proceed to your table. Today i was # 16 and i think my "numbered toy" was a whale maybe? (See pic). Great: The tables are amazingly arranged so that you're not bumping elbows with your neighbors or touching anybody's tables when you go back for coffee. When someone vacates a table it is immediately cleared and washed off very well. Grump's has obviously discovered that a way to keep this place running so smoothly is to have an adequate amount of staff. And yet they are not intrusive. Not one of them sprayed chemicals all over the table to wipe it off. I Hate that because because everyone is inhaling that stuff while you're eating. They instead clean the tables off with what appears to be a sanitized cloth. Thank you for staying with me so far with my long excitement over how this place operates. Now onto the food. Today I had the southern sass Benedict. Boy was I surprised with something new. The base was a thicker slice of ham that was grilled, with a beautifully fried green tomato on top, topped off with a poached egg and a wonderful Hollandaise sauce. Loved it! My Cinnamon coffee was incredible. I never once felt rushed. I perused the entire menu and the prices are good. Their interpretations of standards are devine.
