Being in the market for a quick lunch, and not really eager to go the mall food court route, I was…read morehappy to stumble upon this second location for the Tibetan/Nepalese/Sherpa restaurant whose first, downtown location I've been eyeing for a while. The menu is appealing, diverse, and vegetarian-friendly (even marked for vegan items). The setting was also quite pleasant and well-decorated. What I tried was the somar tofu curry, which virtually every person who has reviewed any iteration of this restaurant anywhere online seems to recommend. The crowd isn't wrong either; the flavor starts with lemon, but takes a journey to a spicy, sweet, and sour place that isn't quite like anything else I've tried. How a restaurant purporting to be from a mountain region near the equator ends up with a lemon-flavored coconut curry I have no idea, but if they're making it, I'll eat it. That being said, it was hard to sway me off of ordering chickpeas and fried bread, and I may find myself at this or the other location to try some more things soon.

Thank God for Tibetan Kitchen in Toowong, that's all I can say…read more I've been a big fan of TK for, oh, fifteen years now, since I first discovered their incredible prawn dish, Jhinge Maccha al Raduwa (I'm SURE I spelled that wrong...). Which is still my favourite prawn dish anywhere, and actually until recently the only thing I'd ever ordered here. (Although have heard amazing things about the somar tofu curry and really want to try that next.) But yesterday I was craving Vietnamese pho. Like, CRAVING it. So I got on deliveroo thinking it wouldn't be an issue but... apparently there are hardly any Vietnamese places in Toowong?? And the ones that were delivering were charging $18-$20 for a bowl of noodle soup... WTF?? But then I noticed, luckily, that TK does a dish I'd never tried--thukpa noodle soup, for only $13. They also had calamari, which is what my kid had requested. So we went for it. I was so glad we did. The noodle soup was absolutely delicious. It was fresh, citrusy (lemongrass I think?), and delicious. It seemed very healthy too - kind of a tomato-ey broth with some chicken and rice noodles and herbs. Yum. The calamari was ok. I wouldn't have ordered it if it was me--I never order deepfried dishes for delivery because they always go soggy--but my son enjoyed it. This should really only be a 4.5 star review though. A few things could improve. First, the "raita" that was supposed to come with the calamari was just straight-up mayonnaise. Who would confuse raita with mayo?? Not cool! Second: the soup was packed in the same container as the noodles, which meant that the noodles were getting soggy and overcooked. I would have packed the noodles and fresh herbs separately from the soup broth, so that everything stays perfect: piping hot soup, and perfectly chewy noodles. The soup itself was great, but I found it really, really benefited from the addition of more fresh herbs. Luckily I had some coriander and mint in the fridge, and when I tore these over the bowl and spritzed over some fresh lime, it made the dish about a million times better. I also added the shredded cabbage and carrots that came with the calamari, and that really elevated the whole thing too. The whole dish could really be improved by packing some herbs, shredded cabbage, maybe finely sliced red onion and a lime quarter in a container with the noodles and then packing the broth separately. I reckon if they did that I'd be ordering that soup on a weekly basis. Maybe it could even replace my pho obsession....

They've got a bit of a Korean slant to the menu, and most dishes smell strongly of sesame oil, which is delicious but gets a little same-y after a while. At their worst, Vegeme can deliver something simplistic and lacking in protein; some of their dishes are rice or noodles with sauce and one or two vegetables and without a whole lot else. However, those are good as a light meal, and regardless, you can eat well for your money. At its best, however, this place offers some pretty nice things. Bibimbap should probably be considered their signature dish, and while I waited a while to try it, it was quite good and had plenty of variety with kimchi and bok choy, soybeans and tofu, and carrots and corn with plenty of sauce on the side and rice underneath, and served in a legit hot stone bowl. Other winners include their dumplings, carbonized bamboo rice cakes, corn fritters, their gigantic noodle soups, and the intriguing basil paste inari. And while one might expect a vegetarian restaurant that caters to dietary restrictions to be a small, dingy space hidden in some distant suburban strip mall, this one is a decent location between West End and the cultural center, and gets a lot of foot traffic. It fills at peak hours, but it's also open mid-afternoon when many other restaurants are not. The crowd ranges from Asian tourists to local hippies and quite a few random passers-by. For me, it's generally the place I eat when I don't know where I want to eat, and the real challenge is trying to order just the right amount to get stamps on my frequent buyer card.

This is not a bad thing; clearly having the groceries and restaurant together is a model that works. I went for the Sunday brunch buffet. This is not expensive, it is all you can eat, and I ate all I could eat. Did I really need to scarf down three baturas, three vadai, two idli, two parathas, and a wealth of chickpea curry and sambar to dip all that in (and some upma, because, you know, healthy)? I felt a tad queasy afterwards as a result, but there was nothing wrong with the food, that much is for sure. Readers who do not know what these things are would be well advised to experiment; most of them are fried, based on some combination of rice, wheat, and lentils, and all of them are delicious. To top it off, they had chai, which was quite sweet and some of the best I've had. The place is a bit of a dive, not to any scary extent but it isn't fancy. The grocery element is modest, and includes mostly packaged and frozen foods, with some nice grain and bean selection, but nothing really fresh. The place does catering, and the restaurant is open for more traditional made to order food as well as buffets at other times. If you're up for some reasonably priced, vegetarian (and reasonably vegan-friendly) food and can make the trip out to Kenmore, I'd give it a shot.

For one thing, unlike its downtown sister locations, this Vege Rama has little Indian or even Indian-ish food at all, which is odd. Their menu is about half pizza, and half of some fairly American (or Australian, or Western in general) entrees. I would have been much more excited for it if they had Indian food. The other excuse, somewhat contrarily, is that I was worried that whatever they did have would be good enough that I'd get hooked. Having finally had enough of walking by their appealing specials board, I tried a pizza with fennel, potatoes, peppers, and spinach. The array of toppings blended well, and it was flavorful enough that I would order again. The chai I got looked cool but wasn't earth-shattering. I suspect there are better things hanging out in their extensive drink menu. They are all-vegetarian, and apparently they ask everyone who orders a pizza if they want gluten-free or vegan. This is probably one of the best vegetarian restaurants I've ever seen in terms of its location and its vibe. Usually, they're fairly basic places hidden away somewhere, but this is perhaps the most visible restaurant in West End, with alfresco seating on a prominent street corner at the edge of South Brisbane. It's a nice-looking place, and it's often crowded (it certainly wasn't empty even on the cool midweek evening I stopped in) with some classically West End-ish highbrow hipster types (if ever you wanted to see what vegetarians look like, walk by here on a Saturday evening). The prices are higher than their food court location downtown, but not unreasonably so given the location and quality of dining experience. I remain miffed that I can't get a side of lentils or a dosa, but what they're offering seems worthwhile, and I'll likely be back before too long.

Carnivores be warned that except for in some of the Byron Bay pies there is NO MEAT on their menu. Max & Alberto - part-owner and restaurant manager - impressed me with their full on Italian charm. Just by their initial fervor and enthusiasm right when we walked through the door to being escorted to our table outside I knew we were going to be taken care of. Hailing straight from Italy - including the head chef - there was no doubt in my mind that the night would run smoothly. We enjoyed complimentary olives soaked in rich olive oil and seasoning with warm, herbed-focaccia bread to start us off. Since it was Mother's Day, we were given a gorgeous complimentary prosecco that I believe was called Cuvee Astoria DOC (Of course anything given on the house is always extra special because it shows that a place is willing to go the extra mile to make a lasting impression.) Started with a classic bruschetta that was served with two toast points. I asked our server that if a family were to order this dish would there be more than two pieces served and was told that they would portion it out differently but it would still be the same amount. I'd definitely recommend ordering more than one for your appetizer if that's the case. For my main I had this decadent gorgonzola risotto with mushrooms and some kind of herbed sausage. It had just the right amount of flavor matching the proper texture that makes risotto, risotto. We all know that risotto is a hard dish to execute, especially since it's easy to make the dish too heavy on your stomach if done incorrectly, but I'd absolutely recommend ordering it at Grey's since everything from taste to portion size was superbly done. I licked my plate clean. We finished the evening with Gancia Moscato D'Asti Prosecco as our dessert/digestif. The sweet, sweet taste of sparkling wine dancing on your tongue always tastes better after a languid, engaging dinner with a loved one at a restaurant that makes you feel right at home. We felt at home at Grey's. First-rate food, great conversation, and a night full of charm and wonder. What more can you ask for while dining out?

So, being curious, we decided to stop in, at our own peril, to happily discover the previous owners have returned, turfed out those they sold to, and have really made the place look more Lebanese fast-food fashionable. There's a massive menu board with a broader array of kebabs, meat options and salads, and more much-needed interior seating. However, there's been a big change to the pricing too with a Shish Kebab previously $9.50, now $16, and lacking tabouli...which used to be on every kebab and made a disappointing difference to the Lamb & Beef Shawarma Rolls (aka Doner Kebabs) we ordered today. They lacked flavour that the tabouli added and with just diced lamb and beef, lettuce, tomato, hummus, onion and a squirt of tahini wrapped in a toasted pita bread it just wasn't the same. And this from the original owners and their kebab recipes! Can adding tabouli really be that unprofitable? We're happy that No No's has returned to it's "almost" former self and there were plenty of customers enjoying the Lebanese food. And while the place looks great inside and out, it just wasn't the same that we had come to know and love before the carnage of the sale and buyback. Please consider a return of tabouli.

The sweets cabinet was nearly empty and the cabinet kept with the vine leaves and kibbie were not on display but were all covered in thick plastic bags. If the new owner continues down this road, he will have killed off all the "good will" the previous owners built up.
