Logistics aside, I've been consistently intrigued. Malaysian cuisine is not a thing where I'm from. The basic elements are what you'd expect from any vegetarian Asian cuisine: noodles, rice, saltiness, soy products, etc. However, there is something slightly different; perhaps most notably when I ended up with some fried "chicken" product and watermelon juice and thought in my head that I might be eating comfort food from the American South. Among the many options I've sampled all have been palatable, and I'm still waiting to get around to the more recognizable names like nasi goreng and laksa. I've ordered differently every time, and if I were to repeat an order it would probably be for the roti chenai, a curry with fried bread that was much more delicious than the ones I've tried elsewhere. You can't go wrong with the noodle dishes either. It isn't the cheapest, but things are cooked fresh to order, and they're worth ordering. They also offer super cheap loose leaf teas. The worst that can be said of them is that once I came and they had closed during the slow hours on a weekday afternoon (inconsistently with their posted schedule), which in my experience is unthinkable for an American business, but not uncommon by looser Australian standards. Otherwise, the service and food have been on point, and I'm quite happy to have found them. I suspect vegetarian Malaysian will be a new thing for most diners as it has been for me, but I would suggest trying it.

Indeed, there are several of these, more coming, and they're not in snazzy beach locations, but spread around Brisbane's banal suburbs. It's almost as if going out for an acai bowl is a normal thing to do. Like most of these sorts of places, it is not cheap, but the bowl I got was quite delicious: a hazulnut "nutella"-ish creation with a respectable variety of fruit and granola. It works because it's the sort of thing I would struggle to do by myself; it's awfully difficult to keep around fresh fruit. The menu is mostly acai bowls and smoothies, but other dessert items and a few savory dishes are there as well, all completely animal-free. It was good enough that I would want to return, though I would more likely sample another location.

Half the fun of visiting is wandering the small but well stocked aisles to look at what products are there. For example, the toothbrushes made from recycled yoghurt containers I carried home from Wholefoods in the US - stocked here. Plus, the owners have branched out into a humble but delicious cafe where you can enjoy eats like the mushroom and mango salsa burger (DELICIOUS) or a sweet treat (like chocolate ganache cheesecake - totally vegan) from the cake cabinet. The coffee, Sacred Grounds, is organic fair trade and not like any blend I've tasted. Plus for those of us that can't handle too much lactose, I'm 99% sure my flat white was made on soy or almond milk which gave it an interestingly pleasant taste and yet no after effects of too much milk.

The interior is pretty spartan. You most definitely wouldn't come here for the decor unless 'prison cell' is your thing, but hey, we were here for the food, not the scenery. I ordered the beef burger, which came with a side of sweet potato chips. Burger was actually quite tasty. Chips... well I don't like sweet potato, but if they had been a little more crunchy then I think they'd have worked for me. I followed up with a vegan dessert thingo, a mint slice. It was quite nice! Washed down with a smoothie which was probably the best part of the meal. Anyhow, would I come here again? Probably not. You're paying far more than you should be just for that 'organic' word, and there's just so many choices in Nundah these days. That said, if organic is your bag, go nuts. So long as their organic, free range nuts.

I think they forgot our tart as we waited such a long time and I had to ask after it. It then appeared immediately but was literally freezing cold in the middle. We already had to leave for school pickup so I gave them my feedback and asked for a refund as we hadn't eaten. Well we waited again for the manager and she questioned everything we said and was very snarky and rude about it. Eventually she capitulated but only when I started to get upset. Will never go back. So disappointed. I will still shop in the grocery store and garden shop but am absolutely appalled at the manager of the cafe. Shame on you. I worked in hospitality for 20 years, you don't know the meaning of the word.

It is as hipster as most non-vegan Brisbane cafes, but by no means intimidating for anyone not wishing to be indoctrinated in a religion or lectured about animal rights. More than perhaps any competitor I've seen thus far, this seems to be the vegan place for non-vegans. All of which is great as far as I'm concerned. The food I ordered came out remarkably well. French toast without eggs is not easy and I've seen it be a tripping point for other cafes, but theirs was creamy and satisfying. It took a decent while for me to receive it, but the carmelized sauce on top sure tasted fresh. The pepper ice cream was presumably coconut-based, but I hardly stopped to think about it as I scarfed the whole dish down. Given that I never liked eggs anyway, I was quite satisfied and gave nary a second thought to its vegan-ness. The only thing I could have asked for was a more generous helping of fruit on top. The potato cake on the side was likewise delicious, and I was glad to have sweet and savory options together. Their menu offered a nice range of things that looked appealing. They still have a few kinks to work out, in my estimation. Their drink menu looked great, but I was asked about ordering from it probably one more time than was necessary. Their recycled wood tables are atmospheric, but I felt like I almost got a splinter on one. Between their website and their actual menu, they still seem to be trying to figure out what their prices are; there was a lot of variation. They will purportedly be open for dinner in the future, which I would really like to see, but at the moment it is a breakfast and lunch place. All told, I would probably back a few more times were my stay in this country not coming to an end, and I hope they are still here when I visit again.
