Hanoi style steak sub on sourdough
    Tammy L.

Another exam down! Just a little bit before a sweet, and rather short vacation to Melbourne! We were good girls and attended lecture after our exam, so we decided to treat ourselves to a delicious lunch at Lady Marmalade, another cafe that's been on my wish-list for quite a while now. It's another one of those suburbia cafes, and although a bit smaller than I expected, it was quite a cute little place with windowsills lined with trinkets. It took a while to get here by bus, so by the time we got there, we were famished! All three of us ordered the Saigon coffee, which is a novelty that just might be increasing in popularity in Brisbane! It's a Vietnamese style iced coffee (sometimes slow dripped) with condensed milk as the sweetener, and it's super delicious. It can be a little too sweet if you mix all the condensed milk in, but I would definitely recommend it. It even came with cute flamingo and cactus stir sticks! I had a difficult time deciding between the special Japanese fried chicken sandwich and the Hanoi style steak sub. I chose the latter, which is a shredded beef brisket with veggies on a sourdough bread, which was pretty much like a fusion Vietnamese sandwich (banh-mi). The meat was really tender, and although it was a bit sweet, I liked it! I think it was actually the condensed milk "bungalow mayo" that I was tasting, but the herb and sprout slaw balanced it all out. The allale rice crackers on the side amused me too. The other items on their menu also sounded good, so we are thinking of revisiting this place one day...

Highly rated cafe, the popular (and busy) cafe -- the food is good. Staff seemed a bit distracted and took a while to take our (table service) order. Prices for breakfast/lunch mains in the $20-30 range.

This kitschy little cafe gives out deformed toys instead of table numbers and has a playlist that would make you think the '80s aren't dead. It has only a couple of indoor seats, being at an oddly shaped corner, with a larger proportion of sidewalk seating. What I liked about them was their menu. They had a variety, and it was a variety that most people could get behind regardless of diet. The savory waffle I got covered in creamed corn with feta and some sort of pesto was interesting and reasonably filling, and given the day was "chilly" (by Brisbane standards), the coconut milk hot chocolate was welcome as well. I took a very sweet pastry to go. It wasn't perfect food or a huge amount for the money, which leads me to think that the current star rating here is about right. Altogether, it was an interesting meal, and there were things I'd want to go back for, including an appealing array of soft drinks and vegan gumbo. The location was a bit of a discovery for me, but as it turns out this is highly accessible and not far from a number of things, including the local hospitals. If you're at a hospital and need a reminder that life is not always hard, head on over.

Saigon Iced Coffee. Vietnamese coffee with sweet condensed milk. Ice. Presented to you in a jar. Stir. Sip. Sit back in caffeinated bliss. As I sat on Lady Marmalade's foot path dining area, a cool breeze and storm clouds forming, it was a grand spot to take in lunch. You see, since Lady Marmalade first opened I've only been back a handful of times. Not for lack of want, but for knowing this former record store has become so popular that finding a table is like finding a needle in a haystack. A tummy rumbling their Po'Boy special of slow braised beef brisket, roast corn and bell pepper salsa and homemade ranch dressing was a spectacular combination and one I'd gladly eat for breakfast or lunch. Just listen to the waiter when he tell you it's what you had. I did, and I don't regret it for one second.

"Hey babes. What would you like" automatic like button is pressed. Not only a chilled/indie/fun atmosphere but an element if realness graced the cafe. This super quirky relative of shady palms (located just down the street) leaves you with nothing but warm fuzzies. I enjoyed receiving a leopard to take to my table instead of a boring table number. It's the little things that mean a lot. Another "little addition" is the vegan option on the menu at the moment. Yum yum. Vegan. Friendly. Fun. I enjoyed my food, I enjoyed my iced tea. I enjoyed my crocheted blanket that I placed over my little cold legs. All things cute and glorious reside here and it would be if benefit to you to check it out and see what all the fuss is really about. (Seriously though to my vegans: vegan okra, black eyed peas/ tomato style sauce was pretty decent. Please try.)

I'm not from around this area so I found this place on yelp and I'm glad I gave it a go! The staff are really friendly and actually have a personality which is good to see. I loved the B-Hal-T (toasted turkish bread with bacon, grilled halumi, spinach and tomato. YUM) sooo much I came back a second time. The girl even remembered my name from my first visit! I had mine take away but this is a great place to chill for sure. Nice vibes. I thought the nitted chair backs were cute and a nice touch of personality. I dont recall there being much in the way of music but that can be a good thing depending on how you look at it.10/10 would eat there again!

I've been here twice now, and really want to like it more than I do. I really love the atmosphere here, it's one of those places where I feel like I can just sit back and take my time. There's no rush on anything. The staff here are beyond friendly and helpful. I couldn't help but be immediately placed in a better mood after ordering. The downside though, is when it comes to the actual food and drink, which for a cafe is a bit of a deal breaker. I found the coffee to be average (a bit too weak for my liking), but now after reading the reviews I really wish I had tried the Saigon Iced Coffee. That seems to be where it's at. Both trips to Lady Marmalade I found the portion sizes a little small for the prices I had paid. The menu does have a little something for everyone though, just don't necessarily expect to leave full unless you indulge in some of the sweets they have on display at the counter. It is mostly foothpath dining, with only a few barstools inside. The place can get a bit busy and there's no table service, so if you're with another person make sure someone grabs a table while the other orders!

After eating at Lady Marmalade twice, I am placing it firmly into my list of "reliable, consistently wonderful places to eat alone or with company". The first time I visited I bought my boss' boss from Melbourne for an early work-day breakfast. Having lived in Melbourne for many years myself, I was drawn into Lady Marmalade by memories of Smith-street bohemian decor (plastic animal placeholders, Nana style crochet blankets and mismatched dinnerware anyone?) and thought it would offer something familiar to my guest. Upon entry and after lining up behind the throng of people ordering their morning coffees we found ourselves desperately searching for a blackboard, specials board, or ANY kind of menu.. it wasn't until we had made our way up the front that we had the chance to peruse the written menus, meaning we had to relinquish our spot in the line and causing some ordering confusion. I think this could be easily avoided by a simple menu board above the counter and would save diners assuming the contents of the glass cabinet was the only fare on offer. We both ordered the Gringo Eggs after I introduced him to the concept of Yelp and the many recommendations for this particular dish - hopefully by now he's registered or is at least consulting it for suggestions around his own city. The eggs were not a disappointment. Amazingly presented in a toasty warm dish still steaming, with soft poached eggs and the most flavoursome beans with herbs and goats cheese. Every time I remember it I salivate. Simple, hearty, robust and well seasoned. We were both in heaven. We sat inside the modest inside area after almost freezing our cabooses off outside at a table. Well, maybe it was just me complaining about the chilling wind tunnel. Mr Melbourne seemed to think it was quite balmy. The only drawback to this place is the seating arrangements. There is rarely enough possies for everyone who wants to sit and enjoy their meals, and what is there on offer - while being homely and funky in all the right ways, is quite frankly hard on the backside and not that easy to sink into with any comfort. Lady Marmalade is the kind of cafe you want to savour. You want to take your newspaper or magazine and while away half an hour partaking in comforting, healthy food around smiling genuine faces. Instead both visits, I've found myself struggling to get comfortable. Maybe I have a delicate patootie? My second visit was a solitary one. I'm a sales person by trade, and I find myself all around the Brisbane suburbs from day to day so dining alone is not a new concept to me. That being said, there are definitely places that lend themselves to dining alone and in my mind Lady Marmalade is one of the better ones. I ordered the chicken pie and requested a "nice salad" to accompany it. The chick-pea was recommended, and while it came out with a very modest serving I was incredibly impressed at the flavour punch it packed. So much was going on, but it all melded seamlessly and everything balanced incredibly well. It also complimented the "meaty" pie loaded with beans, herbs and spices within a flaky, buttery pastry case. I could only manage to get half way through, but demolished my salad. Next time I'm thinking a take-away salad alone would be a fantastic lunch option to take back to the office. I'll be back to this cute little oasis, and I plan to make my way through the entire all-day breakfast menu. It's a tough life, but someone's got to do it. ;)

Vietnamese coffees and our table animal

We kicked off our Sunday morning breakfast with Vietnamese coffees - served in jars with condensed milk. The milk is at the bottle of the jar with coffee and ice on top. You get to mix it up yourself and then sip and enjoy! I tried the vegan breakfast - Okra, tomato, bean gumbo with crumbled tofu. I had to get a side of Haloumi with it, so technically it wasn't vegan anymore, but it was super tasty. The crumbled tofu really made that dish something special! My husband ordered the baked eggs with beans and toast soldiers - the eggs and beans were served in a hot ceramic ramekin and looked amazing! Slighly overdone for our liking (I like runny yolk), but still very enjoyable. This cafe gets very busy, so be sure to arrive early. You still may be waiting a while for a table. They have self serve water inside.

"Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir? No? Well how about breakfast at this little place in Stones Corner instead..." If you think you recognise the owners from this funky little corner cafe from somewhere, trust the impulse. Mal and Bec were contestants on the TV show 'My Kitchen Rules'. They didn't win but they took leveraged the limelight they found themselves in to launch the cafe of their dreams, serving home style fare with loads of character from what used to be a bank building. I absolutely love the breakfasts here, particularly their beans and poached eggs served in a cast iron casserole dish. The last time I had this dish it was given a slight 'daily special' twist. The beans were given a Mexican treatment, becoming 'gringo beans'. The bread was still delicious - thin, toasted slivers of Turkish with rich creamery butter.

Interesting place! I like the old building and the fit out suits it. A varied menu, reasonably priced. Service is quick and friendly - at least on the Monday morning I was there although I understand weekends are busier. I had the Hanoi style sub (see photo of menu for description) which is probably better suited to lunch rather than breakfast - my bad. Reasonable is how I'd describe the food without getting carried away. Genovese Coffee was good.

I was just looking for a cuppa to-go, but was rather tempted to plant myself and look around. The cafe isn't big, but there is a good amount of table space, either to study at or to play the many board games that this place houses! I was quite pleased at their game selection of Cluedo, Scrabble, Jenga, and more! This is also one of the few cafes in Brisbane that provide free wi-fi. So much win! As for the coffee, I've only had their skinny latte, which I do enjoy. For Brisbane, it is definitely good - a bit bold, but not overly dark, like I find the places around here.
