Great brunch place. I would highly recommend the mango smoothie and the Belgium waffle. Price: Is that of other brunch places in west end. Expect to pay around 20-30 per person for brunch. Service: Can be hit or miss but they're usually very friendly and quick to correct any mistakes. The miss part is that the few times I've gone there were always something wrong. First time was got the order slightly wrong. Second time their deep fryer broke so none of the fried items were available. Third time drink order was mixed up. So... just try to be clear and speak up if they do mess up. They were friendly each time. Food Great food. A wide range of dishes. I've gotten the pork burger which is now served in a sandwich form. Sauce was delicious. Portion is fair.

I had heard this place is one of the best for breakfast in West End. It really is! Amazing coffee and fresh food. I had the smashed avocado and hubby had sauteed greens with poached eggs.

Patience is a virtue. A virtue I lack most days. So lining up for anything, especially breakfast, has meant I've often shaken my head at the number of folks lining up for breakfast on a weekend at The Gunshop. Sure it's a good meal, but to line up for? Different folk, different strokes! But I digress for this review is not for breakfast. This review is for dinner. In the area one Saturday eve, my group and I were in the mood for something simple and fuss-free but not take-away. We tried the Spaghetti House but they were fully booked. We wandered down and were pleasantly surprised to be able to be seated immediately at The Gunshop. A one-page menu meant decisions were easy to make and in a split second we'd decided upon toasted sourdough with confit garlic and cultured Pepe Saya butter (anything with Pepe Saya gets my vote), house made potato gnocchi with beef + wild mushroom ragout , pinenuts ,parsley & shaved grana padano and Tasmanian Clover Creek lamb shoulder tagine served with cous cous, pickled fennel, mint yoghurt, toasted almonds and coriander. Calm your farm and know that seated in the magical courtyard of this Brisbane stalward one of the best local dinners I've had in a long time was placed before me. The flavours were rich but satisfying, the portions perfect to have eaten ample but not feel overwhelmed, the service top notch. It's casual dining with an affordable price tag without compromising on quality of food. Gunshop, I've misjudged you and that courtyard you've got going on is something beautiful. If you're planning a special ocassion this could just be your spot!

Fruit salad with mango and mint sorbet - Flavour Explosion!

You could be forgiven if you get lost in the rustic experience of the Gunshop Cafe and forget you are sitting in an inner city cafe. The menu is inviting with it's adventurous combinations of locally sourced faire. On this occassion I enjoyed breakfast with a large group of workmates. We were well accommodated and our drinks orders were taken and delivered quickly. My coffee was tasty. I ordered the Fruit salad w/mango and mint sorbet. My dish was an explosion of flavours which teased my taste buds with sweet and sour contrasts. The mint sorbet was the perfect compliment and the overall portion was generous. Gunshop Cafe staff were friendly and helpful.

So. Gunshop. The first time my husband and I tried to visit Gunshop, the line for the place was literally down the street (a good sign, typically - right?). With the wait estimated at being "at least half an hour" by staff, we decided to move along and try on another occasion. On our second - and successful - attempt we were lucky enough to score a table outside. Perhaps the queue or constant recommendations instilled me with inflated expectations, but the bottom line is that I wasn't crazy about my experience. To be fair, it certainly wasn't bad. The setting has a real 'homely Australian' thing going for it, and the service was extremely attentive. Their soy chai is delicious and the honey is acquired locally. The meal on the whole though - whilst not being poor wasn't exciting either. The strange menu system that means you can't just order eggs on toast for breakfast was frustrating and frankly odd. Having travelled to Brisbane six times this year, this isn't a place I'd keep going back to (certainly not if that queue is a common occurrence) but I wouldn't complain if someone else wanted to try it either. Final verdict: OK.

Menu as of February 2015. Good lord, look at the 'gunshop new' section

I ordered the potato & feta hash cakes with tomatoes and baby spinach. It was a LOT of food, which was excellent, and the tomatoes were perfectly cooked so I was also happy. But, the potato & feta hash cakes themselves weren't exactly rocking my socks off. The food was okay, nothing really stood out to me this time round which was unfortunate as all the other meals I saw coming out looked amazing. Coffees took forever to come out, and the time to get a menu was several minutes after seating, a bit too long for my liking. They were quite busy though as it was around 8am on a Thursday. I will definitely be coming back, as its got a great atmosphere and the staff are so friendly, albeit slow today, and that warrants another shot. The new items on their menu look scary good, so I will order again, then resubmit a review!

The Gunshop is a super trendy spot among locals, and rightly so. The food is incredible, the atmosphere is laid-back and the interior design is low-key. I've been more than once and both times had a great experience. Unfortunately I've only had the pleasure of road-testing their lunch menu; they are known as more of a breakfast spot. Judging by the lunch they serve I can only imagine how amazing the breakfast must be. The last time I went it was a fair while before anyone could decide what to eat; there are almost too many salivating options. I eventually decided on the Tasmanian Lamb Salad. This is a quality place; the food is artfully presented on plates that at home you would consider highly impractical, all the ingredients used are topnotch and Goldilocks herself couldn't fault the portion sizes. If for some reason you are leaning towards skipping dessert, don't. There are only five or six choices but the bite is much more powerful than the bark. I especially recommend the flourless chocolate cake.

I love love love it. I love the Gunshop café. Even though I had to wait ten minutes in line to get in. Who cares? On a Sunday morning, you're just looking for a nice place to eat and waste some time until your hangover wears off, and the Gunshop café is perfect. It has such a high reputation for service and food quality and it was just what my tired soul needed for a Sunday morning. Their food is fresh, the coffee is hot and strong, and the air is charged with fellow breakfast enthusiasts out to enjoy their day - starting with a great meal at the Gunshop café. The place is classy, yet also natural and homely. It's not the conventional environment for a restaurant and its exterior belies its interior somewhat; I was expecting a casual and someone dishevelled place to greet me but I was blown away at the dark furnishings and the welcoming atmosphere of the Gunshop café. The meals are amazing and yes, they are a little steep in price too, but I'm in love with the environment enough that I'll go back. Plus their avocado on sourdough is ridiculously good. Have a flat white, relax, and soak up all the goodness on offer here.

    Mooloolaba prawn omelette
    Andrew P.

I had one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. The Mooloolaba prawn omelette was absolute creative fusion genius. It was a delicate roll on a bed of seaweed and covered with Japanese kewpie mayonnaise toasted sesame and just the right amount of wasabi. A side of soy was an accompanying touch to add to taste. I ate here over a decade ago and the memory of the sesame encrusted seared tuna, prepared by the founding owner chef Matt Christensen still remains one of the best seafood dishes I have ever had. Despite the changes in hands it appears that the gun shop has maintained a high standard. For those that reminisce of the Gun Shop's hay day you will find Matt and his brother Benn at the Crosstown Eating House which you may want to try out.

This has been a favourite breakfast spot for many years, but today I was not so happy with my experience. I went alone, the cafe only had about 6 tables in use, with two staff. Good ratio. I was seated immediately, but then waited 5 minutes before anyone came to give me a menu or take a coffee order. After this, the waiter seemed to forget my existence all together, and it was a further 10 minutes before I managed to call aside another waitress to take my order. She was very apologetic, which was nice. She must have rushed my order through because my meal arrived shortly after. I had the potato hash cakes. Unfortunately, due to the rush to get my order out, my hash cakes were cold in the middle. I ate them anyway, and the rest of the dish was fine. Not my best experience here, and makes me think I'll try somewhere new next time.

The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.

I've been wanting to try Bunker for the longest time, and today was the day. I love the vine covered hub, which reminds me of a burrow, and of a cafe that I used to visit back in L.A. Instead of getting my usual latte, I went for the bottled ice dark chocolate (5). I'm not the biggest fan of hot chocolate, as it's usually too sweet and heavy for me to finish (I know, strange, because I can finish a whole Chipotle burrito), but I decided that the unusually warm weather called for an iced chocolate. We were greeted by a really friendly barista who helped us right away - and well - the iced dark chocolate and dark chocolate mocha were pre-bottled, so there wasn't much work. The iced dark chocolate, made with organic milk (I think?) and fair trade chocolate, was quickly consumed! It wasn't too sweet, and I would definitely go for it again. The iced dark mocha was also really good, and not at all grainy, which often happens in a lot of mochas. My only complaint was that the bottles were a bit harder to open (I prefer Bean's bottles), and the straws were too short and kept falling in! The drinks were so delicious it didin't matter though....
