    Filter coffee served in teapots
    Mel P.

As the name suggests, Bunker is set in an old bomb shelter/bunker - appearing to be hiding in a large hedge. Cool factor established. Cue iPhone photography frenzy. Inside is what really counts though, so luckily for Bunker it is filled with great staff making amazing coffee to avoid being just a kitschy joint for hipsters to get caffeinated. When we arrived they were about to start a cupping, but having been the third coffee on our rounds, we opted to just have a filter on the grass out the front and enjoy the sunshine. Served in little teapots, the filter is easily shared between two or demolished by one. There's also plenty of cold coffee on offer (great for summer) and the hot chocolates are supposed to be pretty special too. Definitely a must-see on the Brisbane coffee rounds.

Funky little coffee place in the 'burbs, which is set in an old bomb shelter. The coffee here is fantastic! And they serve their cappuccinos with REAL chocolate shavings (either milk or dark) on top. Whilst I didn't get to try it this time, the hot chocolate menu is extensive and I've heard it's a must-try. There's also a small selection of sweet treats for those that like a little something with their coffee, and various magazines to browse through as you sip your drink. The only bad thing about Bunker is that it isn't closer to my work so I could visit every day.

Bunker only gets four stars because of my bitterness towards it only opening on weekdays. Bunker's coffees, hot chocolates, and iced bottles of both, are truly delicious. Whenever I find the opportunity these days, I will drop by and stock up on a week's worth of happiness in the form of a six-pack of mixed iceds. I love the challenge involved in shaking the bottle enough so that the milky seal that's formed at the top of the bottle gets dispersed. While they did make their best efforts to open on Saturdays, they gave up after only a month or two. The worst part is that they gave up their regular Saturday spot at the Village Markets at Kelvin Grove to give the Saturday opening a good run. (That market spot was taken over by some very worthy gentlemen, but there is still a longing in my heart.) I'll never forget that first hot white chocolate with lavender I had at the Village Markets. I long for you always, Bunker. (The few twitter friends that like to tweet the daily hot chocolate flavour special aren't helping to ease that, either.) I guess it does make it all the more special when I finally get to visit, though. On that note, I have a day off work on Friday, so... you know where I'll be. I sure hope the hot chocolate flavour is snickers. Wait - or lime! Crap, no - sea salt! Ahh, I don't care, just give it to me. (IMPORTANT UPDATE: hot chocolate flavour was jaffa/orange, iced chocolate flavour was lime AND sea salt. BOTH, PLEASE!)

A free bite sized lamington for every coffee or chocolate bought here on Australia Day (today!) so get in quick. Love the free stuff. What an interesting little coffee place, it's unique for sure. With a lot of cyclist traffic on weekdays it's not hard to see why they frequent this joint in crowds. The coffee is made quite quickly and while sometimes the flavour seems diluted, the actual coffee they use is really quite tasty. I guess it used to be an old garage or an actual bunker, i'm not too sure, but it's got a solid feel when you walk in to it for sure. Try a double shot latte, they're served in these shot glasses that look like they are very fancy and cost a bit (don't break them okay), the coffee really does hit the right spot here. The only thing I would stress is to go in off peak times, during peak times there is a crowd and you do have to wait, but it's pretty worth the wait to try the coffee.

Bunker's store front. Very efficient use of space.

Bunker is literally a hole in the wall coffee spot and it is amazing. The latte I had was among the best I've ever had and definitely the best coffee place we encountered in Brisbane. We have been missing this coffee ever since we left Brisbane. You can buy their coffee online through their supplier 5 Senses. The downside is they only ship within Australia so if you're wanting to ship internationally, you're out of luck for now. Parking isn't too difficult. There is enough street parking in the area that you can find a short term spot to grab your drink and a pastry. They have limited bench seating inside if you want to stay and enjoy your drink. The baristas were all extremely friendly both times we visited and you can tell they have a lot of regulars. If you are in need of caffeine and are in the area, I highly recommend Bunker. 5 stars.

In an unsuspecting garage, in unsuspecting Milton, there hides a little coffee shop that should be experienced by everyone. The vine covered Bunker was originally...well...a bunker! It has since explored many identities. A car port, storage garage, and now a specialty coffee and chocolate shop. It's the design that strikes you immediately. Although a tiny space (fitting 10 people at a squeeze) it has been utilised beautifully. The staff clearly have a great rapport with the regulars, and were friendly and welcoming to this stranger as well which added to the lovely laid back vibe the place has. I had been pre-warned that once I try a hot chocolate from Bunker I won't want one from anywhere else. This warning was totally correct! Despite being tempted by the hot chocolate flavour of the day, lime & sea salt, I decided to stick with the traditional. Served in a clear glass and topped with real chocolate shavings (none of this chocolate powder business) was the best hot chocolate I have experienced. It might sound like puffery, but I kid you not, this is a beverage not to be missed out on! I indulged in a coffee as well and made my choice to go with the blend roasted by Cup in West End. Smooth and rich and lovely. It's the hot chocolate I will be back for though!

Not only can you buy an assortment of all things chocolate, as gifts or for your own treat (as you would with any boutique chocolatier shop), you can also come in here to sit down to experience full table service and order from their salon menu. There's appetisers, ice cream, savoury, desserts, warm brews & sweet things "for the young at heart". We liked that their menu caters for those with allergies & intolerances as well. Starting off with some hot chocolate, how could we possibly decide which item to order when they all sound so amazing? Easy. Go for the dessert degustation, which for two people at $26, is a great way to taste most of the dessert items. The dessert degustation is a plate of: (1) Chocolate alchemy cake, (2) Raspberry Mousse, (3) Chocolate hazelnut cluster, (4) Belgian mousse, & (5) Chocolate ice cream. The truth needs to be said. So, my most recent experience at The Blue Cat was really positive. We browsed the array of delectable, beautifully presented chocolates. The service staff was welcoming but not particularly personable. For reasons I'll disclose later I decided to ask a few questions. I began to query the woman about the chocolate cooking classes they had on offer. Initially she was pretty vague but was quite clear in insisting that emailing the person in charge would alleviate all of my concerns. A friend of mine purchased two small pieces of chocolate before leaving, which I was able to steal a bite from. I have to admit that the chocolate is quite delicious and well worth the gourmet price tag. Over five years ago I went to The Blue Cat as a high school lad and I had a totally different experience. The woman at the counter treated us very poorly for absolutely no reason. A friend of mine approached the counter during the incident and the woman barked, "don't maul at the counter". In this moment I tried to ask the woman to calm down and raised my arms to my chest before she snapped, "don't raise your hands at me". After that we left immediately, intent on never returning again. So, here I am five years in the future unsure of what to tell you. I can tell you that my most recent experience was quite exceptional and the product was delicious. I can also tell you that I also had the most shocking customer service related moment of my life here. In addition, one merely has to google The Blue Cat Fine Chocolates and you'll find an array of contrasting reviews that essentially say what I am telling you. The people running The Blue Cat may be a little eccentric but I don't know if that necessarily justifies their behavior. For the adventurous shoppers out there I encourage you to go to The Blue Cat, grab something sweet and share your story, cause I have a feeling each encounter with the lions at The Blue Cat will be different. I do hope they purr sweetly for you.

The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.
