Go for the dessert degustation, which for two people at $26, is a great way to taste most of the dessert items. The dessert degustation is a plate of: (1) Chocolate alchemy cake, (2) Raspberry Mousse, (3) Chocolate hazelnut cluster, (4) Belgian mousse, & (5) Chocolate ice cream. I bought chocolates at 156 first. Everything I saw was $6 for 100 grams, but I didn't know what 100 grams of chocolate looks like (darn Imperial system) so I ended up getting a pre-packaged and wrapped pack of 4 random goods for $30. Mixed bag whether it's worth it or not. Buying the 4 packs separately would have been cheaper, but the milk chocolate-covered strawberries in the gift set weren't in stock individually at the 144 store.

I'm not the biggest fan of hot chocolate, as it's usually too sweet and heavy for me to finish (I know, strange, because I can finish a whole Chipotle burrito), but I decided that the unusually warm weather called for an iced chocolate. We were greeted by a really friendly barista who helped us right away - and well - the iced dark chocolate and dark chocolate mocha were pre-bottled, so there wasn't much work. The iced dark chocolate, made with organic milk (I think?) and fair trade chocolate, was quickly consumed! It wasn't too sweet, and I would definitely go for it again. The iced dark mocha was also really good, and not at all grainy, which often happens in a lot of mochas. My only complaint was that the bottles were a bit harder to open (I prefer Bean's bottles), and the straws were too short and kept falling in! Their sign caught my attention from the corner of my eye and curiosity sealed the deal for me to walk in, up the stairs and to the loft space that is home to the usual NCF range of chocolates, their signature hot chocolates and coffee. It's spacious, more so than the Adelaide Street stores, with ample seating for group get togethers. Their light pine fitout remains and the neon "Made in Queensland" sign shines bright from the back wall. I opted for a hot chai mocha with their milk chocolate and on a windy city day it was just the drink to warm your hands as I walked back down the mall. So next time you're in the Queen Street Mall and a craving for freeze dried chocolate covered strawberries presents itself, you know where to go!

The truth needs to be said. So, my most recent experience at The Blue Cat was really positive. We browsed the array of delectable, beautifully presented chocolates. The service staff was welcoming but not particularly personable. For reasons I'll disclose later I decided to ask a few questions. I began to query the woman about the chocolate cooking classes they had on offer. Initially she was pretty vague but was quite clear in insisting that emailing the person in charge would alleviate all of my concerns. A friend of mine purchased two small pieces of chocolate before leaving, which I was able to steal a bite from. I have to admit that the chocolate is quite delicious and well worth the gourmet price tag. Over five years ago I went to The Blue Cat as a high school lad and I had a totally different experience. The woman at the counter treated us very poorly for absolutely no reason. A friend of mine approached the counter during the incident and the woman barked, "don't maul at the counter". In this moment I tried to ask the woman to calm down and raised my arms to my chest before she snapped, "don't raise your hands at me". After that we left immediately, intent on never returning again. So, here I am five years in the future unsure of what to tell you. I can tell you that my most recent experience was quite exceptional and the product was delicious. I can also tell you that I also had the most shocking customer service related moment of my life here. In addition, one merely has to google The Blue Cat Fine Chocolates and you'll find an array of contrasting reviews that essentially say what I am telling you. The people running The Blue Cat may be a little eccentric but I don't know if that necessarily justifies their behavior.
