As the photo stream will indicate, I've been to Vegeme quite a few times, and ordered the majority…read moreof their menu. Experience shows that their dishes aren't all equally good. They've got a bit of a Korean slant to the menu, and most dishes smell strongly of sesame oil, which is delicious but gets a little same-y after a while. At their worst, Vegeme can deliver something simplistic and lacking in protein; some of their dishes are rice or noodles with sauce and one or two vegetables and without a whole lot else. However, those are good as a light meal, and regardless, you can eat well for your money. At its best, however, this place offers some pretty nice things. Bibimbap should probably be considered their signature dish, and while I waited a while to try it, it was quite good and had plenty of variety with kimchi and bok choy, soybeans and tofu, and carrots and corn with plenty of sauce on the side and rice underneath, and served in a legit hot stone bowl. Other winners include their dumplings, carbonized bamboo rice cakes, corn fritters, their gigantic noodle soups, and the intriguing basil paste inari. And while one might expect a vegetarian restaurant that caters to dietary restrictions to be a small, dingy space hidden in some distant suburban strip mall, this one is a decent location between West End and the cultural center, and gets a lot of foot traffic. It fills at peak hours, but it's also open mid-afternoon when many other restaurants are not. The crowd ranges from Asian tourists to local hippies and quite a few random passers-by. For me, it's generally the place I eat when I don't know where I want to eat, and the real challenge is trying to order just the right amount to get stamps on my frequent buyer card.

I enjoyed the lentils and slow cooked creamy polenta. My sister loved the avocado toast made with house made gluten free bread, home made Vegemite and of course, fresh avocado. The…read moremenu looks like a menu from any other Australian cafe, offering things like French toast and polenta and a wide drink selection. The fact that all of it is vegan seems almost incidental. It is as hipster as most non-vegan Brisbane cafes, but by no means intimidating for anyone not wishing to be indoctrinated in a religion or lectured about animal rights. More than perhaps any competitor I've seen thus far, this seems to be the vegan place for non-vegans. All of which is great as far as I'm concerned. The food I ordered came out remarkably well. French toast without eggs is not easy and I've seen it be a tripping point for other cafes, but theirs was creamy and satisfying. It took a decent while for me to receive it, but the carmelized sauce on top sure tasted fresh. The pepper ice cream was presumably coconut-based, but I hardly stopped to think about it as I scarfed the whole dish down. Given that I never liked eggs anyway, I was quite satisfied and gave nary a second thought to its vegan-ness. The only thing I could have asked for was a more generous helping of fruit on top. The potato cake on the side was likewise delicious, and I was glad to have sweet and savory options together. Their menu offered a nice range of things that looked appealing. They still have a few kinks to work out, in my estimation. Their drink menu looked great, but I was asked about ordering from it probably one more time than was necessary. Their recycled wood tables are atmospheric, but I felt like I almost got a splinter on one. Between their website and their actual menu, they still seem to be trying to figure out what their prices are; there was a lot of variation. They will purportedly be open for dinner in the future, which I would really like to see, but at the moment it is a breakfast and lunch place. All told, I would probably back a few more times were my stay in this country not coming to an end, and I hope they are still here when I visit again.

I suppose I have two excuses for waiting so long to visit this local restaurant so obviously…read morecatered to my needs. For one thing, unlike its downtown sister locations, this Vege Rama has little Indian or even Indian-ish food at all, which is odd. Their menu is about half pizza, and half of some fairly American (or Australian, or Western in general) entrees. I would have been much more excited for it if they had Indian food. The other excuse, somewhat contrarily, is that I was worried that whatever they did have would be good enough that I'd get hooked. Having finally had enough of walking by their appealing specials board, I tried a pizza with fennel, potatoes, peppers, and spinach. The array of toppings blended well, and it was flavorful enough that I would order again. The chai I got looked cool but wasn't earth-shattering. I suspect there are better things hanging out in their extensive drink menu. They are all-vegetarian, and apparently they ask everyone who orders a pizza if they want gluten-free or vegan. This is probably one of the best vegetarian restaurants I've ever seen in terms of its location and its vibe. Usually, they're fairly basic places hidden away somewhere, but this is perhaps the most visible restaurant in West End, with alfresco seating on a prominent street corner at the edge of South Brisbane. It's a nice-looking place, and it's often crowded (it certainly wasn't empty even on the cool midweek evening I stopped in) with some classically West End-ish highbrow hipster types (if ever you wanted to see what vegetarians look like, walk by here on a Saturday evening). The prices are higher than their food court location downtown, but not unreasonably so given the location and quality of dining experience. I remain miffed that I can't get a side of lentils or a dosa, but what they're offering seems worthwhile, and I'll likely be back before too long.

Tea Master has some annoying limitations, most notably their hours (closed at 8 pm and on Sundays)…read more However, they do offer a very interesting menu and their tea selection is impressive. The teas I've ordered (my favorite being the genmai cha with toasted rice) have come with a full set of pots for steeping and cooling and a sealed bottle of additional water. They're really quite nice. The food is all-vegetarian. Some of their dishes have been a little too basic for my taste, and I was notably underwhelmed by their none-too-spicy ma po tofu. They seem to really, really like bok choy as it's come with pretty much every dish I've had. However, if one gets deeper into the menu, they offer some appealing things. Notably, I was pleased with their hot pot, an impressive display of ingredients with a lit burner under the soup containing a variety of fake meats, noodles, and rice cakes and sets of vegetables, rice, and sauce (very hot sauce if you go for the spicy option) to add to taste. I couldn't even finish the thing and they were nice enough to pack it in several containers to go. They also kick out some nice fried little appetizers. It's small, but I've often seen it well-attended, and it is a go-to in the Fortitude Valley area for me.

Tea: It's one of the few places in Australia that brews their tea properly. They give you three vessels. A pot for brewing, a vase for holding liquid that has been brewed to perfection, but doesn't fit in the cup, and the cup itself. There is nothing worse that over brewed tea and this classic Chinese set up prevents it. They have a lovely selection of greens and oolongs to choose from, in addition to your traditional black tea. The tea is of average quality, so tea snobs won't be all that impressed, but it's still far better than anything you'd find in a Brisbane cafe or coffee shop. Food: The chili bean noodles, deep fried radish cake and the cold sautéed bean sprouts were all fantastic. Their food leans on the salty side but in a good way. What a lovely find!
