I've loved being a patient at Grove Eye Care. You know how everyone has a doctor visit they're kind of afraid of? Eye doctors used to be that for me, but after my experience with Grove Eye Care, I feel much more confident and relaxed. I had my first visit back in 2023. I was looking to start wearing contacts and to get a new glasses prescription. Booking an appointment was easy. My first visit is a bit of a blur since it's been over a year, but I did have main takeaways. Whoever it was that guided me in how to put on contacts was the kindest and most encouraging person I've met. In my experience, a lot of eye doctor visits have involved inpatient people (I can understand because I would feel inpatient hearing the same six letters over and over again). I did not feel this way with my contact teacher. She was there to support me and made me feel welcome. I highly recommend getting contacts here. The contact experience involves getting the right prescription for you with a doctor, learning how to put them on, getting trials for a week, then returning to see if you'd like to order them. I have VSP which helped with the cost and have enjoyed the Bausch and Lomb Infuse 1-Day contacts. As for eye exams themselves, on an annual check-up this week, I did have a more impatient examiner, who didn't really explain all the machines to me which I didn't mind as much because I felt more confident, but had wished she told me when bright lights were flashing. They have a machine you can pay extra for so you don't need to get your eyes dilated which is nice. My first examiner in 2023 did explain everything. I think you just need to ask. My doctor is Dr. Schwartz. She helped me with my contact journey as well as treating headaches and dry eyes. She's very direct and to the point and can answer any questions you may have. I've enjoyed having her as my doctor. During my visit this week, I explored possibly purchasing new glasses/lenses at the shop section. It was a bit out of my price range, but do know you can get your prescription for free and if you need the distance of your eyes it's a $10 charge. If you're feeling uneasy about eye doctors, this is a great place to feel more confident and comfortable with them. The parking is easy here with a lot out front. It's near Carytown. And there is a gender neutral single stall for bathrooms. I highly recommend. read more

I appreciate how the doctor shows you the scans of your eyes and explains the different things he's looking for and why. Have been seeing Dr. Levy for years but he recently retired. All I wanted was Glaucoma testing which is covered by Medicare. Make sure you tell them that's the reason you are there nothing more and nothing less. I had to have it done on 2 separate days, 2 months apart (7/19 and 9/5), which is the first time for me. My experience was very negative with some of the annoying testing that was done on my second day which I felt was testing my reflexes and patience rather than my eyes, as I had to click when I see flashing lights. There was additional testing and I said I had enough no more testing today for me. I was told to wait so the doctor would go over the results. I waited and about 5 minutes later the tech comes to tell me that the doc had a flat tire and it's going to be a while and she would call me. I left and told them that the doctor did not have to bother to call as I was annoyed and frustrated. I was charged I am going to say $100 (during the first visit) as they said Medicare did not cover a certain testing (maybe it was this one done today 9/5/2023). I thought maybe something changed with Medicare's coverage and really did not push to ask if this was a testing connected to Glaucoma testing. The customer service, cleanliness, and state of the art technology makes Grove Eye Care the best place to go in Richmond. They even welcome you at the door. I have six family members with different needs, and they are all addressed. The best part is that Dr. Levy takes that into account and doesn't recommend more than what we need. My 7 year old went today and he could have a prescription but it isn't immediately necessary, so he recommended we wait to see if it changes in a year. The nice thing about this place is that it is not a chain. However despite it being in business for years there are a lot of flaws and pitfalls to this place. For example when you call and asked to schedule an appointment I was told that I would be on a waitlist for any earlier appointment. No one had ever contacted me. When I call back later on and ask if there's anything available I was told there's some thing within two days clearly this waitlist was nonexistent. Eye exam is good but of course they try to sell you everything. Avoid the dilation, avoid retinal exam if you're young and healthy. Optician was rude and condescending and clearly in a rush she told me she had to get back to her work. She also was trying to sell a lot of extra things, was not good explaining things, was annoyed when I had questions. Poor customer service. Because I was asking questions she said I was acting like a child. A bit disappointed in her. I also accidentally left my glasses behind. She did not try to reach out to me or call me thankfully I remembered and drove back otherwise curious what would've happened to my glasses. read more

If you have nothing better to do then wait for a scheduled appointment then I recommend going to this place. I scheduled a visit for 2pm. I left work and showed up in the parking lot at 1:58pm and checked in right away. I didn't get a phone call to check me in until 2:22pm. Buyer beware. Went for my eye exam and then to their optical shop. Waited three months, that's right, months not weeks for my glasses. the delays ranged from the lab never got the frames, to they came in but didn't pass inspection, to they came in but the lenses are falling out-we could silicone them in for you while you wait for a new pair but they still might fall out. They offered me a duplicate pair for the hassle, which I accepted. When my new glasses finally came in, the prescription was worse than my old glasses. I couldn't focus near or far. The technician checked the lenses against the prescription and said they were accurate so the prescription needed to be "tweaked". I said I wanted a refund and was told they don't give refunds. So I asked to see the manager and was told she wasn't there. the next day I got a call and was told "my only course of action" was to continue the tweaking process until they got it right. I said I didn't want to do that and wanted a refund just for the glasses. they could keep the exam part because it included overall eye health. Nope! Basically, their position is why should they lose money? I said because you made mistakes. Why should I pay for your mistakes. I was told Trish would get back to me. I waited a week and no call. So now o have to pursue other means to get my $600.00 back. save yourself the hassle. Go somewhere else. I would leave zero stars if I could. I went in for an eye exam and needed to update the prescription for a pair of vintage frames that belonged to my Grandmother. After the exam, I met with the person in charge of pricing out the cost of my lenses and I was presented with a waiver saying the office doesn't bear any responsibility should they break your frames. It was odd because I have a few vintage frames and never have had to sign one of these at another optometrist's office. I had a bad feeling, but since I had already gone through the motions, I signed the waiver and completed the sale. After the sale, they called me with a higher price because they underquoted the price. Again, I had a bad feeling, but I paid the additional cost. Two weeks later, I got a call from the office. They broke my frames. The girl was upbeat and was devoid of any empathy whatsoever. She told me my frames were 40 years old as if it was their age that caused the break. The frames were made from a heavy plastic, much better than some of the newer materials today. She went on to tell me I could add the lenses to a NEW pair of frames from their office for an additional cost! Imagine that. Obviously, I declined. I should have paid closer attention to all of the negative reviews about this place because I'm experiencing all of the same emotions as those reviewers--some of them going as far back as 2016. I requested a full refund and then went back and forth with them before I finally got a refund. I switched optometrists and realized I now pay much less for a more comprehensive exam. If they are so negligent with your frames, lack empathy, and go around in circles about a refund, imagine what could happen they were negligent with your eyes? If you're looking for an optometrist, keep looking. read more

The eye exam was the only good part of my experience, and even that was a little iffy. Despite scheduling my exam early in the morning, and arriving early, I still had to wait over a half an hour to be seen. The optometrist I saw was very thorough and knowledgable, and friendly enough. Dealing with the optical department left much to be desired. Their selection of frames is small and expensive. On the day I visited the show room, the staff were visibly flustered and panicky. Placing a special order also turned out to be a headache, as the frames I wanted to try on took over a month to arrive. They did not update me on the status of the frames, and I had to call them for information and was frequently put on hold. My calls often only reached an answering machine. I ultimately decided to purchase glasses elsewhere. Communication between the receptionist office staff and the optical department was also lackluster. Receptionists would say one thing when I called, only to find out the opposite was true from optical workers. Just getting a copy of my prescription was a hassle that I had to initiate and follow-up on every step of the way. Overall, the exam was okay, but everything else was not worth it. The team at Grove Avenue Eye Center is top notch and incredibly helpful. The imagining they do is not necessarily covered by vision plans, but having them read the imaging does enhance the quality of care you receive. I've been going to this Center since 2003, and I highly recommend them. The doctors are all very interested in you as a patient, not as a cash source. And the staff have been nothing but friendly and knowledgeable about benefits. My only beef is that I made an early morning appointment to get in and out and it still took a little while to get back and in the examine room. read more

These guys are really outstanding, I've never had a bad experience. I go in for routine eye exams and to get my contact lenses, etc. Everyone is polite, friendly, and competent. An annual check up will take about an hour, which is reasonable, and I really feel like I'm getting quality service. And I love the automated appointment reminders, every office should use those. [I amended this review because a year later I went back. Dr. Neidig apologized for the state of the glasses department back then and found that my prescription had been wrong. I got a pair of glasses on the house as a result. It's encouraging that this place may be on the upswing again! I'm surely rooting for them.] The eye exams here have always been well done, although they have no ability to make an emergency appointment. Keep in mind that you'll wait about a week even if you need glasses/contacts because you lost or broke your current pair. The on-site glasses store is abysmal, though. It should be malpractice for the optometrist to just funnel you in there. My experience: they told me glasses would take 7-10 days. On the 9th or 10th day I was asked to come in, and when I did we discovered it was the wrong prescription. I was told a rush would be placed on it. A week later I called wondering what was going on and left a message. I did not feel like a week constituted "a rush" and if it was going to be the same period of time couldn't they have simply let me know? I left a message at 9:30 AM and got a message back an hour later saying that they would be ready in a few days. I drove in the next day to see what the problem was and spoke with Brenda Moye, who I assume is some sort of manager there. She apologized for the problems, offered a partial refund, and said the glasses would be ready on Monday. Now we're over 3 weeks for a pair of glasses at this point. This morning I got a message from her saying my glasses were ready. However, in the message she disputed that I had never received contact from her office, claiming an employee had left me a message earlier before I had to go in personally. This was patently false (I double checked my voice messages) and needlessly combative. When I went in to get my glasses fitted, she forgot about any talk of refunds. I run a business and nobody is more sympathetic to dropped balls than I. Every chance I could give them, I did. In return, I got a lot of standard managerial talk about sympathizing with me and wanting to correct the problem, but in the end they neither owned up to it (blaming me for the miscommunication) and no real follow through to ensure that a long time customer would bother coming back. I was taken aback at how this place made me feel during my short time as a patient: inadequate, cheap, and like it was a privilege to be seen by such eminent physicians.... Furthermore, I asked for my prescription after my exam and was instead directed to the glasses outlet in the back which was staffed by condescending and haughty individuals who became increasingly annoyed at the amount of time I was taking to fit glasses in my price range. I know now that Grove Eye Care was possibly acting unlawful in not providing me with my prescription immediately after my exam. I hope all current and future patients are aware of this. Under Virginia law, you don't have to shop for glasses there and you have every right to receive your prescription without needing to ask for it. read more

I just happened to ride by Grove Avenue Eye Center and decided to stop by and look at their glasses selection. They had a great selection of designer glasses. It was 4PM on a Friday and they were so helpful and I ended up giving them my prescription from my eye doctor and purchasing my glasses. As with most people I have been going to see an eye doctor since I was young. Having been in glasses and contacts since the age of 10 I have seen my fair share of doctors. I have to say that 2 years ago I was lucky enough to go to Grove Avenue Eye Center as recommended by my sister. Dr. Tira is honestly the best doctor I have EVER been to. She is helpful, intelligent and actually seems to care about her patients. For the most part every doctor I have ever been with seems to hate their job and their life and would love nothing more than to be anywhere but working with patients. One of the BEST things about her is she still wears contacts and hasn't gone through vision correction surgery as all of the other doctors there have. She understands exactly what it is like and can really relate to her patients and give useful advice and suggestions. Every product she recommends is because she personally has used them and tried them out. Not like other doctors that are getting a kickback and have no idea what it is actually like to use. If she ever leaves this practice I will follow her wherever she decides to go. She is phenomenal! read more

Update: I still think the medical exam portion of this business is 5 star. However, they told me that my glasses would be ready in 5 - 7 business days and now it is looking like it is going to be closer to 2 weeks. This was unexpected due to staff illness, but I had to call and ask for someone to call me back to give me an update on why I hadn't been contacted to pick them up. So bottom line, maybe consider taking your rx to a different place to actually get the lenses made, but I'd still recommend them for the eye exam itself. read more
