We needed to remove a bath/shower tile surround to re-waterproof and retile, and replace the fixtures. We went with GUB after getting their name from a tile vendor and meeting with more than one alternative. GUB were the most expensive by far but also were the most responsive and had the most professional and comprehensive bid. All of the legal paperwork and their license information was included, along with a detailed scope of work and examples of past work. Adi Aiish was our Field Manager. He's friendly and very responsive and our overall impression was that the additional cost would be worth it to have a professional job. To be succinct, here are the pros and cons from the project: Pros: - Responsive field manager - Very fast demolition and quick work overall - Crew was hard working and polite, especially Antonio - Tiling work looks good Cons: - When a piece of plumbing broke and flooded the ceiling below, the response was that things like this happen. It took 5 days for the field manager to take a look and offer an apology. - During demolition, the mess was off the charts bad, leading to a lot of cleanup for us afterwards. During the project only the floor was covered (and on one day not at all). I've had other renovations done that were much cleaner. - The finishing was not as polished as I would have hoped. The caulking around fixtures was messy, the tile tilted slightly revealing the old seam around the floor, painting that was in the bid was only one coat until I asked for more. I think the M.O. is to work very quickly and fine tune the finishes only after being asked. Overall we're happy with the result but would have liked them to go a little slower to be more careful. read more

In 2023, Ground Up Builders finished building an ADU for us as part of a garage conversion. This became a unit for my parents to live with us. Between 2016 and 2020, they also remodeled our kitchen and two bathrooms. Every time we have needed some work done, I call Uzi. Basically, there is no contractor/builder like this--it is now 2026, and I called Uzi today because of a concern about a leak that we discovered with the recent rains. He sent out his team immediately (eg., same day) and they discovered that squirrels had caused some damage. They covered the area to prevent further problems until we can get this fixed. This was our first time going through any type of remodel, so we were seeking a contractor and company with a great reputation along with demonstrating patience, competence, and professionalism. Long story short, Jacob was awesome, and we really felt as if this was his own home and took time and empathy from all angles of the project from concept to completion. We live in West Hollywood, so not an easy city to work with for permits along with an incompetent HOA, which Jacob navigated effectively whereas I feel others would almost give up or deprioritize simply bc of the hurdles in headaches. Not the case with Ground Up... Their overall work and craftsmanship were spot-on across all aspects of the remodel fit our vision and managed to get very close to the estimated time of competition even though the City and HOA were not on our side. I purchased my first home with my dad last year and really wanted a pool in my small backyard. I was worried it wouldn't be possible just due to the huge dirt hill we had taking up half of the space. When we describe our remodel experience to people, people are shocked at how smoothly it went. Ground Up is a unicorn among contractors. Our cost and time estimates were correct. 8/9 months for a bathroom and bedroom addition, kitchen remodel, new floors all over and updates to windows and current bathroom, and new patio. We didn't start out with that much to do, but of course we did expand the scope once we discovered how great Uzi's team was at getting things done - and it didn't add much to the time. We figured it was best to do as much as a we could while Ground Up was on site and it could get done quickly and reasonably. Uzi cares endlessly about the quality of his work, as well as the timeliness of it. He knows his stuff and has a good eye. He runs a big operation, but he manages it so well that it ends up being a big plus to the client - motivated and friendly workers who we really liked, crews that always show up day after day, everyone really working hard to get things done well and on time. We've been through construction before, so we know it's sort of unheard of to think of your contractor like a friend after going through the hell of construction. There's nothing quite like the feeling of being a satisfied customer and sitting down to write a review of a business that I first noticed because of all the other satisfied customers. Does not happen enough, that's for sure. From the initial late-night reply & follow-up (to my late-night inquiry) from Eric, to meeting Avi the next day (!) to discuss our budget and options --- GUB immediately stood out as a company that takes their work and their customers seriously. I met with a few others before GUB and was getting a sense that no one was going to care about our little project given that our max was at or below the standard minimum, and that everyone seemed quite busy already. The only other company I could find that even remotely compared to Ground Up in terms of reviews and quality of work, sent what I would call a junior contractor who spent a grand total of about 3 minutes here before saying something like "Not to be mean or anything, but we're kind of a big company..." lol. No thanks to him, I'm guessing. Avi completely shattered my expectations from the get-go. He asked thoughtful questions and gave thoughtful answers with resourceful ideas and creative possibilities to help us track down that illusive buck bang. I could tell immediately that he genuinely cares about the work and the process which, oddly enough, includes the clients too! Hooray for the customer, someone still knows we exist! In the end, Avi remained both the only one willing to hit our number and the only one I actually wanted to work with. The next lowest bid was well over $5k more, by a far less polished contractor, who couldn't even include everything from our list. The difference was so stark, in fact, that some family back east were quite suspicious at first. I could not blame them! It seemed way too easy!! Thankfully, no one remained suspicious for long. Avi was a rock. He got right in here after contracts were signed and during the various delivery delays he remained patient, checking-in, and at-the ready. Also -- always available via text or call as we had various moving parts in terms of shopping for sizes of things, and some custom elements reliant on other things. When we finally won our game of musical vanities that caused weeks of delay... Avi and his team --- who were all very nice and respectful btw --- were right back here in a matter of days. Here's what you want to know: Avi & GUB delivered exactly as promised while practicing straight, honest, good faith, handshake business, with truly competitive pricing.
