Mostly are done in Chinese, but I believe that they can also teach in English. They have private tutoring classes as well in Chinese string and woodwind instruments. It's a husband and wife team. Mrs Cheng, a beautiful woman and her husband are well known in the Chinese classical music industry in Canada. They have a number of CD's of various music in their collection of performances. We were shown the $800 dollar GuZheng, but that wasn't what Mum wanted so Mrs Cheng brought our a few others to show. When the final selection was made and the purchase done, she tuned the instrument, offered the free stand and the free chair. We didn't get the chair, but daughter will get it next time. The ones that they had at the time were too small. There was a mumbling in the car of how expensive it was, but that it was more affordable than the other places. The Daughter hopefully really likes it (which she did) and that she'll take the lessons and learn it well. If not, Mom will take lessons! The service was quite nice. And after Daughters first class, she said that she enjoyed it. Soon, the melodic tunes of the skillfull GuZheng student will fill the air in the house with music. A Rhapsody in progress.

From these lessons, I went on to study music at Douglas College, before transferring to UBC studying with Michael Strutt. The current teaching group is just as strong. One of the current teachers at SMC, Phil Korytko, I have had the honour of playing guitar with from time to time. I can easily state he one of the best guitarists I have ever met. When it gets busy there, expect to waste 30-45 mins just waiting for someone to help you. While I…read morewas there, the lone sales guy was nice enough to help a lady fill out an instrument rental form... but at the cost of making a room full of people wait. The lineup to simply pay for an item took 30 mins. Some advice to speed things up: No one wanders into a music store and spontaneously decides to rent an instrument. Most ppl will do research beforehand. Offer an incentive for ppl to fill out forms online or come WITH the paperwork already completed. If staff needs to walk costumers thru the process, have ppl book a time or charge an administration fee. When you've got customers with a product in hand, waiting to pay & leave, there is zero excuses to why they need to spend the next half hour listening to people fumble at filling out a simple form.

In fairness, though, I have to give a solid shout-out to the input of Howard Lee, at Tom Lee Music in Richmond (no relation I'm told), for his impeccable technical work on my Buffett clarinet, both in its initial prep for me to resume my playing, and in keeping the instrument in top-flight performance condition over the last 6-7 years of my rather frequent playing schedule. While I find Howard to be a "typical" Tom Lee employee (first patronised them through their Hong Kong store eons ago) -- like Howard, they are generally knowledgable, conscientious, customer committed and proud of the high-quality services that they provide. In the esoteric world of woodwind instrument maintenance and repair, however, Howard Lee stands out: I've encountered no one with higher standards, work ethic, and reliability, than Howard Lee -- a true musical repair artisan.

I was there for 20 minutes, and was trying the pianos and making noise, so it's not like they didn't see or hear us! It's the worst service of any piano retail stores I've been to in the lower mainland. Do NOT shop there.

My family has been taking piano classes from Ms Allison for almost 5 years. Latest is with my…read moreyounger child who started with Ms Allison during Covid. Through zoom and later in person lessons, Ms Allison has patiently coached my child into a little pianist, capable of reading notes, playing various pieces and most importantly enjoying music. Note she teaches in the classical style, vs Suzuki method. Ms Allison has been great about encouraging my child's interest - for example, my kid likes to sing and Ms Allison, who has a lovely voice, will encourage them to sing along while practicing to keep a consistent rhythm. At other times, it was about composing little pieces on the piano when there was interest in that. My child has enjoyed the various recitals Ms Allison has put on as well. Ms Allison is a wonderful, kind and patient teacher!

I asked my piano tuner, Brad Fant, for suggestions for other piano teachers. He gave me a short list. Two were not in Pasadena. Because I'm a Senior Citizen without 20/20 vision (its 20/40 in one eye and 20/70 in the other), I did not want to drive out of Pasadena. Voila! Allison and I had a trial lesson at her house and we clicked. Then, Covid hit. Her partner created a great setup for Zoom lessons. She can show me an overhead shot where I can see her fingering technique. She can hold up my theory homework page, which I scan to her, and we can discuss it. Then I turn my laptop so she can see me play the current lesson music! Zoom isn't like being together in person, but I am enjoying our time each week.
