A good friend of mine told me that the way you know good gelato is that it's kept extremely cold in a case (not piled up high like cotton candy), and the pistacchio will always been more brown than green. Grom definitely lived up to both! I had Grom three times while in Florence and each time was delicious!!!!! The first time I tried Bacio (chocolate with hazelnut) and Pistacchio both had tiny bits of nuts in it with great flavors. The second time I tried the flavor of the month: Crema Pasticcera al Torrone di Nocciole (custard with hazenut nougat) which was also so yummy. The third time I had Zabaione (egg cream and Sicilian Marsala - excellent!) and Cioccolata Fondente (made with Venezuelan chocolate)- best gelato of my LIFE!!!!! Ten days in Italy now and I think Grom is my favorite spot thus far! Super creamy and full of flavor. We found out about this place since our born and raised Florence tour guide pointed this out as one of her favorites. The gelato is kept hidden from sight in the freezers with round lids. She mentioned that real, creamy gelato shouldn't be standing in glass cases with the pretty decorative peaks. Grom takes the gelato cake, for sure. I've had my fair share of gelato after studying in Florence, coming back, traveling, and I still posit that Grom is the best. I also got a tour and chatted with the gelato makers when I visited once. Bonus. They have flavors that they introduce and change out with the seasons. They do their best to keep things organic and natural. Double bonus. The good: fantastic gelato, for one. Also, kind servers who deal well with throngs of tourists trying to order in Italian. The bad: long line. But is that really a bad thing? You can essentially stare at the duomo while the line cuts down. Must do: snag a seat on the curb and eat. Natural flavors are not this bold (mint should not be green!) There are countless gelato shops in Florence (and Italy, for that matter), but Grom is definitely one of the best. We are on a taste test of all the artisan gelato shops and this one is on top for me. Just how we do it in Oakland, fresh, natural and delicious but with gelato! A must try I had to go back for more and promised my children that after we went to the Uffizi just to see the Michelangelo I would take them to Grom. After eating at 5+ different gelato places throughout the week, Grom has earned the consensus of the best gelato in Florence for our group of 10+ tastebuds. We had every type of tastebud from the simple chocolate and vanilla to the more adventurous tasteris ... hands down this modern and simple place made us return here again on our last day. The ingredients are focused seasonally so in our winter gelato tour of Florence, we stuck mostly to chocolate, coffee (caffe), and crema based flavours. The coffee (caffe) flavour here earned gasps and wide eyed joy as the first bite was savoured. No one could believe how potent and creamy it could be till we had our own cup or cone (no sharing was ever offered for good reason!). Other wonderful flavours included the seasonal chestnut (marron glace), crema di Grom (chocolate and biscuits in a lovely milky custard), dark chocolate (super condensed essense of chocolate with none of the sugary overload), limone (light and refreshing bright citrus), zabione (sweet milk custard with a light masala wine flavour), and pistacchio. It's clear this is the good stuff as the gelato is properly held in stainless steel containers and not displaced in piles out in the open. Also, they are muted colours so there's no food colouring and the only colours come from the ingredients itself. The service here is funny as the older gentlemen help makes suggestions to the best in house and comments how you come to the best place in Italy and surely you must try THIS flavour instead of THAT. The portions are definitely smaller compared to the other places but the quality of the gelato is what makes it feel like it should be worth much much more. Each time we went, there was never a line up in January so there was always room to sit and relax while savouring each bite. read more

Yes, it really is the best gelato in Florence. Just barely out of view, you'll only find this place if you're luckily stumbling upon it by accident or you already know it's there! Long lines are synonymous with great products, so expect that. Abrupt service sometimes also comes with the territory of being known as one of the best--so don't expect them to smile, let you sample half of everything, and let you take your time by the time you get to the counter. That said, you better know which flavors you want! Be ready, pay and enjoy your treat. It's super smooth and delicious. They use organic ingredients from their own farm, and tend to have flavors based on what's in season. I myself got the caramel with pink Himalayan sea salt and my hubby got the grapefruit and lemon--all outstanding and creamy to boot! Be careful cuz sometimes they don't put the scoops on the cones very well. I saw several land mines of unfortunate droppings outside never making it to their owners lips, so I'd get the cup as opposed to a cone if I were you. No mess that way either! read more

Grom is an amazing stop for Gelato. The flavors are all delicious and the gelato itself is rich. It is served out of tins (which is a sure sign of authentic gelato). I was told by a Italian man named Francesco that this place boasts the best gelato in Italy. I haven't tasted all the gelato in Italy (I will, don't worry), but among eating gelato in various towns in Italy, and of course other countries, this is hands down the best gelato I have ever tasted. At Grom you will taste what real gelato is *suppose* to taste like. Real chocolate, real matcha, real hazelnut, real lemon, real vanilla, real pistachios, real figs...and more. No artificial colouring or additives here. And yes they have cones, but who eats gelato in cones? It's always busy. I came here mid-afternoon, there was a line, but nothing to major as it moves quickly. Take a seat by the bar and watch the handsome Italian men stroll by...and have as much fun as I did. ;) read more

This is one of the best and most convenient gelaterias in the center. Located within a couple meteres from the Duomo off one of the side streets. You don't have the heaping piles of fake gelato here. They make it fresh in their store daily and have a large selection of flavors. They list their flavors on the wall so make your selection from that while you wait in a short line. Then take you cup or cone and head back to the piazza to enjoy while you admire Brunelleschi's master piece. My favorites are the usual flavors of caffe and cioccolato. What's interesting about this gelato place is first off, it's hidden in an alley by the duomo. And second, they don't show you what the gelato flavors look like. So, my friend and I had heard about Grom for weeks. In search of the ultimate gelato, we'd scoured the city long and hard. The locals we were working with kept asking over and over if we'd been to Grom yet. One day, while walking around after work, we we poking around some side streets and saw a long line. In Florence we came to realize, counterintuitive-ly to American thought process, if there was a long line... just get in it. There was probably a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
