La Strega Nocciola was one of several gelaterias that I tried while in Firenze. I made it my intention to try as much gelato as I could in the city so when we had some down time post-lunch we thought that a little sweet would hit the spot. To be transparent, one of the things that drew me to La Strega was the name, I wanted to see what was so witchy about this gelato - and of course the positive reviews helped. The gelateria itself was lovely - soft music playing with intricate decor and a good amount of space. There were a few chairs and stools in case you wanted to sit and enjoy, though they were a little awkwardly placed. There were several flavors of gelato as expected - instead of being on display they were in tubs covered in lids. I heard that's the "proper" way to store gelato as it remains fresher, though the jury is still out for me on that one. Anyway, I got the smallest cup size where I was able to choose two flavors - so I went with the cream and the chestnut. The gelato was really good - creamy with great flavor. Service was great, and overall this was a solid gelateria - La Strega is definitely worth stopping into when in Firenze. read more

Modern with exposed brick wall, with touches of Tuscany! Natural light awakens the soul! A few years back I studied the art of artesian Gelato and recognizing authentic Italian Gelato - at the top is avoiding the shops with mountains of glossy colored stuff. In fact, La Strega Nocciola is one of the few shops where the Gelato is enclosed in metal "cold boxes" with lids, so really you're only seeing the name plate. Taste testing if preferred, but for me, I order what the local Italians order. So I ask Ms. supermodel. Her response: Buontalenti and... Buontalenti and Hazelnut it is! It is also agreed that true Buontalenti Gelato can only be found in Tuscany. After all, the exclusive Buontalenti flavor is named after Bernardo Buontalenti, the founder of the Italian dessert! It's ironic that nothing in the ingredients is crazy or hard to find... it's simply cream milk, sugar, eggs, but I guess the so called "secret" is usually a liqueur (such as Di Saronno Amaretto). Alternatives include, a pinch of mixed spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Buontalenti and Hazelnut firmly in hand! The moment of truth as I turn the keys to this exotic Lamborghini! For example, the mango and pistachio that I ordered actually tasted like mango and pistachio. The dairy gelatos are so good and creamy. This was my second favorite gelato place in Florence (and probably second or third favorite in all of Italy) - there are a few locations in Florence, but this location is located close to Ponte Vecchio which can be really touristy, but the gelato is anything but a tourist trap. The quality of the gelato here is really great: creamy, rich, and not too sweet. This place has a lot of traditional flavors (hazelnut, chocolate, dark chocolate, stracciatella, pistachio) and a few more unique flavors like bergamot, a cream & Nutella. The gelato comes in the stainless steel tins with the lids (always a good sign of homemade/good gelato) vs the touristy, sugary place that have a huge mound of gelato with artificial flavors and artificial coloring. The stracciatella was definitely one of the best renditions of stracciatella I've had - with a creamy base but not too sweet, with real chunks of not-too-sweet chocolate. If I came back here, I would just get a full scoop of this and not split it with anything else, it was that good. I also got a cream + Nutella + puffs flavor that looked interesting, but this was a bit on the sweet side for me and I much preferred the stracciatella. If you're in the area or close to any of the locations, make a trip here and skip all the other gimmicky gelato places. Prices here are pretty reasonable, with a small costing 2,60€, a medium 3,50€, large 4,50€, and extra-large 6,50€. I would recommend this place if you come to Florence! read more

I choose the chocolate hot pepper, lavender, and pistachio. The lavender was my favorite. It had a strong lavender taste and they used real lavender! I loved the pistachio too. That's one of my favorite gelato flavors and it was delicious! There were real chinks of pistachios in the gelato. My least favorite flavor was the chocolate hot pepper. At first, the gelato has a strong rich chocolate flavor, but after a while you notice the spice all throughout your mouth that you have a hard time enjoying the chocolate flavors. I don't think the red peppers enhance the decadent chocolate at all. The gelato is creamy, rich, and thick. I will be going back during my stay in Florence! read more

We fed the kiddo her first authentic Italian pizza and then made her walk despite the jet lag. She complained...a lot. She was thoroughly unimpressed by the city's architecture. The Ponte Vecchio was 'ridiculous.' The pigeons were creepy. But when we finally turned her through the doors of La Strega Nocciola she smiled broadly. With one chocolate cone in hand she was suddenly a much happier girl. I ordered a medium sized cup of two flavors: the same milk chocolate as the kiddo and an orange cream. It was a delicious combination of flavors. The gelato is served from a temperature controlled counter with lids atop each flavor. It's much different than the traditional presentation of mounded ribbons of gelato overflowing from open tubs. The quality was still very good. Its texture was heavier; more similar to a softened American hand dipped ice cream than a creamier gelato. It was heavy on the cream as evidenced by the emergency stop to grab water afterward to cleanse the palate. But we liked it a lot and the flavors were delicious. It was a solid choice after walking in the heat. The shop was busy. So we clearly weren't the only ones who enjoyed their offerings. read more
