I visited this location two nights in a row and got the espresso affogato with stracciatella the first night, and then the hot chocolate affogato with stracciatella the second. Both are clearly listed on the menu as 5.50€. The second night the employee charged 7.50€ and argued when we pointed out the error. She refused to correct the price and complained about us to her coworker, probably thinking I couldn't understand her. Despite overpaying, the gelato is indeed very creamy and the right amount of sweetness. It is the perfect accompaniment to a hot beverage.
We had some midmorning gelato here because.. well.. why not?! I was excited to try this fully gluten-free gelato place, including some crunchy gf cones. They had lots of flavors to choose from, and I selected the ricotta and fig and the coffee. They were delicious, and the cone was crunchy (though the chocolate dipped part was really firm and hard to eat). The husband of mine enjoyed the stracciatella and lampone. It's definitely a spot not to be missed by anyone following a gf diet, but especially for celiacs.
Chain gelato spot that's just off the main path around the Cathedral. Came here to grab some gelato while other members of our party were waiting in line for the Reparata. We had a cone that we split with two flavors - strawberry and pistachio. Credit cards and cash accepted. There's no indoor or outdoor dining so it's primarily a takeout spot.
Grom's gelato was just alright. I'd seem gelato places with this name all over Italy and decided to finally visit while in Florence. I tried about 4-5 flavors and only really liked one of them. Because the crema di Grom was their specialty flavor I decided to get two scoops of a caramel flavor and the crema di Grom. I soon realized that was a poor choice as I did not enjoy the crema di Grom. It had a very grainy texture since its made of maize and I don't really care for corn flavored ice cream. The caramel was better so I finished that portion of my gelato and let the other half go to waste. All in all, I tried multiple flavors before ordering and was not a fan of most of them, which should have been a sign to walk out of there and find another gelato shop. Not impressed and wouldn't come back.
Grom's principles speak to my SF foodie soul. They use organic ingredients (single origin chocolates like Ocumare from Venezuela, vanilla from Madagascar, fruits that are in season), they don't use preservatives or emulsifiers, they have compostable spoons and cups and they recycle! It does take a bit of an effort to find this place (which is also around the corner from a great pizza place, Le Bertucce) but it's close to the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore or Il Duomo. Just keep your eyes open for a long line of people. I made my decision in a flash: got the Tiramisu and Marsala gelati. Gelato melts faster than ice cream but this is the best! it's creamy but not heavy, the flavors are pronounced and it just tastes so pure. Quality ingredients are good for your body ... even if the calories go straight to your hips! ;-) The lady who helped us was patient with my broken Italian, actually, the staff is probably used to the hordes of tourists who come here everyday. It was raining when we came, but it was still pretty busy! Did you know that Florence invented gelato? that automatically makes it the best in the world. Go.
I fell in love with the Grom franchise at this very store. Grom's awesome mission to serve organic yet delicious gelato (flavors are seasonal) came to my attention through a travel guide - it was the one time I was glad a travel guide did not screw up by directing me to some overrated tourist trap. If you want to know what REAL gelato tastes like without the artificial flavors and coloring, Grom will show you. I had the lemon, coffee, apple, and pistacchio flavors...and I have to say this happened over the course of three visits in the cold fall. Not once did I feel like each flavor was too sweet - each of them tastes as exactly as you would expect them but in a very natural way. I can't really find the words to elaborate further unless you give Grom a try (There is now one in Malibu, CA). This Grom is small but clean in a minimalist with its signature white walls and blue information boards adding to that effect. It attracts lines even when it's cold outside and is located conveniently between big tourist spots such as the Florence Cathedral (Duomo) and the Uffizi. Should I ever be lucky to visit Firenze again, I will not hesitate to visit.

Best authentic gelato in Florence! Salted caramel and Stracciatella are my favorite. Even the cone was light and not over sweet. Simply the best I tried gelato in Pisa, Lucca and Milan and couldn't find a better spot than Grom read more
Grom was cited as one of the top spots to get gelato in Firenze, so of course we had to check it out; I made it my intention to grab gelato as much as I could while in the city, so after dinner we decided to stop by here before turning in for the night. Like most other gelaterias we visited, Grom isn't a large space. Walking in we were immediately greeted by the cooler, and besides that there isn't much standing room. The typical flavors were there, and I decided to order the smallest size cup which optioned me two varieties; after some deliberation I went with the stracciatella and the cream. Both gelati were good - I don't tend to go too much off the beaten path with flavors and these stacked up well against the same flavors I've tried in other gelaterias. Service good - efficient and before I knew it we were out the door. Overall, worth a stop if you're in the area - the gelato is good quality with just the right amount of flavor and sweetness. read more

Compared to other gelateria in the area, a little bit more than expensive at about 4.50 euro Love this flavor which is ricotta and fig! A little bit too sweet for my taste but enjoyed the creaminess that the ricotta brought to the gelato read more

I heard about Grom through a friend of mines and how it is supposed to be good gelato for a chain place. I have to say it is definitely one of my favorites here because of how fresh the gelato is here (they cover them with tin lids!) and how real the taste is. I got the pistachio and apricot ( apricot was recommended by the worker) and boy both flavors were so rich. I felt like the pistachio almost tasted like peanut butter at one point.. The gelato is a little more expensive for 2.5 euro if you want a small cup. There are other as good places around for 1.5-2 euro for a small, but do check out Grom if you please. This is also known as a tourist spot so expect a line! read more

Best gelato in Italy! Periodt!!! They have seasonal fruit flavors and everything is super naturale, so no preservatives, just real natural ingredients and flavors. Taste is the best I've had so far in Italy read more

I know there's a GROM in NY now, but I had to try the actual Italian one. The signs are all in Italian, which is a good sign, and all of the gelato is hidden under tin lids, which is more legit than the pretty open displays. The people working there speak about as much English as I do Italian (ie not very much), but we got by ordering without any problems. Small cups with two scoops are €2.60 each. Compared to US prices for small batch ice cream these days, I think it's a steal (though I think it just means the US prices are ridiculous these days.) They had about 20 flavors and let you sample. Seasonal flavors: - Torta di mele: basically apple pie - Torta di Novembre: hazelnut cream with biscotti Classic flavors: - Salted caramel: less sweet than in the US (I liked this more) - Bacio: dark chocolate - Limone: not overly tart, pretty clean tasting I ended up with the two seasonal flavors above. Both had intense flavors of the ingredients without being super sugary, and I liked that both had various textures (pieces of apple, biscotti, etc). The gelatos were smooth but not super heavy. I am definitely going back multiple times on this trip. It's a small space, but there's some standing room inside. Cash only. read more

Best gelato I've ever had, including in the states + my time in Italy. And I had gelato almost every day. My friend recommended it and luckily it was close to Duomo, so after climbing all those 343287 stairs and back down, it was definitely needed. I got the yogurt and pistachio flavors. OMG!! I have never in my life tasted pistachio gelato like this. I normally like the Haagen dazs pistachio ice cream but this was a whole 'nother level. It is so creamy, with the perfect nutty after taste. The yogurt was also very refreshing, and just the yogurt tasting gelato flavor I wanted. Back in California and missing Grom so much!! Everybody in my family enjoyed their gelato here. read more

When exploring Florence on foot, it is often easy to justify a pause in the journey for gelato!! We made several stops for gelato during our week-long visit to Firenze in March 2012. Of the various gelato shops we visited, Grom was the standout favorite. Grom's tagline is "il gelato come una volta" . . . meaning "gelato as it once was". This is a very appropriate promo as you'll feel as though you're experiencing a 'taste of Italia' in each delectable bite. I'll stop short of recommending any specific flavor, as it really doesn't matter what you choose, I'm certain it will be awesome!!! Go with your favorite flavor . . . Chocolate perhaps . . . . and see if it doesn't fulfill your taste fantasy!!! We enjoyed 3 different flavors @ 3.50 Euros each, escaping . . . refreshed . . . for 10.50 Euros. Then, onward, with our exploration! read more

Hands down the WORST gelato experience I've had in Italy. Not even just gelato but worst service I've had in Italy. And it's a small gelato shop, well known enough to be international (there are locations in the U.S.). I walked in and there was barely any line (YES), so I had little time to ponder my options, although I couldn't understand the all-Italian menu, anyway. My sister ordered first, leaving me to make my choice. The gelato server asked me what I wanted, but I wasn't sure so I asked about a few of the flavors. I could tell from the look on her face that she was getting annoyed with me, but she answered my every question. She asked me again what I wanted, and I wasn't sure so I said one moment. At the point, she put both elbows on the counter and started rubbing her temples and face in annoyance. I was feeling terrified, so I finally pointed to the chocolate chip (although I didn't know it was chocolate chip from the name) and asked what it was. She rudely said "that's chocolate chip, just chocolate chip," and then started naming all the gelato flavors for me, lifting up the tin lids and slamming them down each time she named a flavor. At that point, I should have just walked away. It was the rudest I have ever been treated in the service industry in my entire life. I ended up meekly ordering a small gelato with two flavors, chocolate and cream. It was melty and not unique. I will never visit a Grom ever again, whether in Europe or in the U.S. Some standards need to be met, service wise, especially if it is a service that has expanded beyond local franchising to international lines, and how the server treated me was inappropriate, disrespectful, and should never be repeated to another customer. read more
Rating: 78/100 pts Grom is a gelato giant. Originally from Turin, they have taken the country by storm, currently having locations all over Italy, a few in Japan, one in Paris, several in New York, and even one in Malibu*. I was intent on trying it from the get-go, but thought it would be most prudent to do so in Florence, the city where gelato was purportedly invented. *Update: They also just opened one in Hollywood, CA! Grom prides itself on their exclusive use of natural ingredients: their fruity varieties use real fruit, and they proudly claim to use "no added flavorings, colors, preservatives or chemical additives of any kind". The first thing I noticed was their list of interesting flavors, many of which differ from location to location and change with the seasons. For my long-awaited first Grom experience, I decided to go with Persimmon (which was in season) and Ginger with Chocolate (the flavor of the month). This gelato was good. Very good, in fact, and better than most of the other gelato I had on my trip. However, it was not the best, nor the best I had in Florence (that would be the local Gelateria dei Neri, if you must know). Still, my first experience with Grom was positive enough to warrant repeated visits, and I am definitely looking forward to trying their other flavors, including their signature "Grom Cream". And thankfully, they have a location right by me in Los Angeles. I will definitely be continuing my Grom journey back home! read more

Like any other grom in Italy. There's a freaking long ass line! They have grom in Rome and in NYC, it's a big gelato chain. I must say I was reluctant to try it because I had it in NYC. But I saw the line and couldn't resist... They didn't have strawberry! What?! That's the most common gelato, their selection was limited, so I got raspberry and vanilla. It was quite good, the vanilla reminded me of vanilla bean from Starbucks. Wipe cream is an extra .50 euro. It was the best gelato in florence that I've tried... So it was good, creamy, and rich. read more
Rick Steves guided me to Grom when I was in Firenze on vacation. In his guidebook, he says that many locals claim Grom is good but not the best, preferring Gelateria De Neri; however, Steves still maintained that Grom serves up good gelato. Found Grom serendipitously after walking down from the Giotto's Campanile (Bell Tower). Grom is just off on the side street near the Bell Tower, closely situated to Duomo. Came here twice while I was in Florence. Ordered chocolate, zabaione (light custard made with Marsala wine), pistacchio, and yogurt flavors. All very good - creamy, consistent texture, very smooth, and fresh ingredients. Liked it so much the first time that I had to go back for a second try. It definitely blew away the gelato I had in the Mercato Centrale. I'm not sure how it compares to Gelateria De Neri, but it is very good gelato for a chain shop. read more
