Grisette is one of my friend's favorite restaurants, and he that we come to enjoy their legendary steak frites. This restaurant is absolutely adorable, though bear in mind that their seating is somewhat limited. For a larger group, we ended up sitting outside, but luckily the weather worked out well, and they had a heater and blankets if needed. I definitely recommend making reservations for this place. We started out with some of the duck pate, which he also loves, which were absolutely delicious. I'm not usually the biggest fan, but I loved all the accoutrements that they included alongside the pate. The cocktails were all delicious, we enjoyed all the ones that we had. I had to the steak frites medium rare, which was very delicious, and the fries or something to write home about - they're so crispy and flavorful, we ordered a whole extra one to share. I do feel as though the steak on its own was a bit underseasoned and did need the bearnaise sauce to really appreciate it fully -- I think just a bit more salt and it would've been perfect. The setting is lovely: a beautiful spot in Church Hill near Chimborazo Park, right across from Alewife, with the kind of neighborhood charm that makes you want to linger and order another cocktail. What impressed me most was how precisely the food evoked the French countryside. Every dish felt like something I might order in a small village like Tournon-sur-Rhône: perfectly cooked and unfussy, focused on ingredient quality and balance rather than flourish. The rockfish arrived with a seasonal mix of corn, tomato, okra, and green beans that tasted like summer on a plate. A melon, cucumber, ricotta and berry salad was clean and fragrant. Profiteroles and a peach cake wrapped things up with the right lightness. Even the pork belly dish, which can so easily tip into heaviness elsewhere, was handled with restraint and care. Grisette IS a place to visit on celebratory occasions! We were seated at the two-top behind the bar. It is a small space with lots of foot traffic, but we were told that table had less traffic than the other two-top away from the bar. My mom mentioned it was my birthday and the manager brought over two glasses of complimentary cava - such a nice touch. We also each ordered different gin cocktails - she had one with dill and I had one with egg whites. They were tasty. To start, we requested a cheese plate. My mom wanted the gouda and I asked our server to pick two of the others that weren't blue cheese. He selected the dirtlover and challerhocker, which was a Swiss cheese. I was OBSESSED with the challerhocker - legit soooo good. He mentioned that one is his favorite, too. For my meal, I ordered the fettucini. My mom ordered the duck confit, but it was very tough so she sent it back and also ordered the fettucini, which she enjoyed much more. It came with a dusting of Aleppo pepper on it. I can handle pepper in very small portions otherwise it makes me sick, so I'd recommend they add it to the menu description for dietary restrictions. I still enjoyed it though and it did give the pasta a nice little kick (and I didn't get sick so we're good!). For dessert, I couldn't help but order the profiteroles and my mom had their mango cake. Grisette is such a treat. We made reservations for Thursday night. When I first got there I was thinking there was no need for the reservation but it got packed fairly quickly. Our waiter was great with the suggestions and his patience. I let him pick the items for the smorgasbord. I was definitely the more adventurous eater of our party and was more than satisfied with the options. The highlight of our starters was the tomato and melon salad. So fresh, light and refreshing with the sweetness of the cantaloupe and the peaches. Definitely a must try while they have it! The steak frites were amazing! The fries - crispy and so good! The steak - no better description than beefy. You know you're eating a good steak when it's simple and the real flavors come out. For dessert we split the profiteroles. I will be back just for those and a glass of wine. Overall the experimenter at Grisette was nothing short of special. From the second you walk in the staff makes everything easy. Decided to try Grisette out after a funny accident and thinking it was Alewife. The hostess was lovely and kindly redirected us. She playfully said we could stay if we wanted. I decided on a whim to try it out a few weeks later. I managed to snag a last minute reservation on the patio. The vibe was cozy and laid back. The service was top notch and every recommendation- especially every wine was 10/10. Service was not rushed and that's really rare and something I truly appreciate. We had the special app (collar with salad and pickled ramps)- so freaking good! We both went with the steak frites. Those fries though- addictive. And for dessert, the strawberry pavlova. To get a reservation at this place on a weekend evening is tough! Everything fills up pretty fast because it is a very in-demand place. We showed up right at opening time on a Saturday and we were able to sit at the bar luckily. The wait staff was pretty attentive and friendly. You could tell this place was very classy and they were trying to keep everything good with their service and their good food and the overall ambiance. My friends both got one of the chicken dinners but they probably should have shared it because the chicken portions were very big! We also shared one of the bread and cheese plates which also was just so good with so many different options and you get to choose on some of them. I also had the anchovies over bread just because I knew I was going to get really full and it was excellent. With all the appetizers, I knew I needed a small dinner so I'm really glad I picked another appetizer for my main entree. All the food here was amazing and everything smelled so good. We went to Grisette during an almost fall like evening breaking up the enormous heat wave we've been having. We were able to sit outside and it was beautiful and great neighborhood vibe. Our waiter asked us if we wanted to do a surprise menu (not the word he used but I can't remember) basically a chefs choice. We said absolutely! We started with the shishitos with peaches with ricotta and a pistachio crunch. It was lovely. Next came three enormous beef bone marrow. Tough one for me. I regularly receive bone marrow biopsies as I am recovering from Leukemia. NO WAY for the chef or staff to know that, but I just couldn't stomach it. My husband ate it and it was okay. It needed bread or something to sop it up as it was gelatinous and greasy. Next was a wonderful melon salad and the steak and frites with an added foie gras on top. It was seared to perfection with a wonderful crust and the foie gras was a decadent touch. My husband wasn't a fan, but I loved it. The biggest complaint was the length of time between courses. It took a very long time between courses then at the end the waiter asked us to move tables because another party needed ours. I mean WTF? They took forever bringing our meal and then kicking us out of our table. Uhhh. No thank you. We got the check and that was that. Overall it was good but not great. Our waiter was very enthusiastic and took good care of us. The menu is constantly rotating so you'll always be able to try something new. They had extensive charcuterie options and lots of wines to choose from. I ordered the duck confit and it was delicious! This restaurant is an intimate setting. There's patio seating outside and bar seating inside as well as some tables. It's not huge and you can feel tucked away pretty much anywhere. Soon thereafter, I realized I had booked the wrong one, so I swiftly cancelled on the app and also called to explain. They were understanding and assured me not to worry about being charged. The inside is very nice and intimate. Perfect for up to four people. I'm not sure how it would be with a larger party, but for four it was absolutely perfect! I can't say enough great things about Andres. ***Drinks*** 5 Stars Our table of 4 split the Evesham Wood Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley) and the Camino de Chile Sauvignon Blanc 2022 which were both excellent and paired well with the SMORGASBORD and the flounder main course. *** SMORGASBORD / Appetizer *** 5 Stars Marketed as quote: "Our favorite 3 meats & 3 cheese at the moment. All served with our bread, pickles, mustards, jams, and such. Check the chalkboard and chat with us about today's selections." Our wives consulted and chalkboard and made the selections. Probably one of the worst steaks I've ever had. I don't know what cut of meat it was, but it was chewy like a junk piece of SHANK beef. I've had flank steak that was more tender than the sinewy dryness I was served. There was zero seasoning, not even a dash of salt. I asked for medium rare on the cook and was given medium-well. The frites were the star of the dish and were perfectly cooked and seasoned. I supposed one could argue that the dish originally calls for rump steak and the flavor comes from the Béarnaise sauce but in 2023 we use entrecôte; THANKS. The steak should be able to stand alone on its flavor; period. Send it back you say? To do what? To magically produce a better raw ingredient, you don't have? I'm not going to wait over 20 minutes for a re-fire when my guests are plowing through under seasoned flounder. I'm going to cut the steak into small pieces, take the L, and just power through. Yep, the fish sucked too. All the dishes photographed well but there was an astonishing lack of seasoning. *** Dessert *** 4 Stars The Profiteroles with chocolate sauce helped to rescue the night. They were delicious and we wiped that plate clean too. When you combine the Profiteroles with A+ service, good wine, and an amazing CHARCUTERIE you end up with 3 stars instead of 1. Went to Grisette for the first time on a Wednesday night (with reservations, which I recommend). The place was packed, not too loud, with a great vibe or atmosphere. Small tables with vintage plates (they chose the plate to fit the food - so smart) and short but mighty menu. We shared the homemade bread with obviously fresh anchovies in olive oil - Devine! My friend had the rockfish entree which was perfectly cooked & I had the special Pork Schnitzel with spaetzle & mushrooms (took 1/2 home and it was just as good the next day) Both were wonderful. The best thing I had at this place is Smorgasbord that you get to choose your own combination of meat and cheese so you don't stuck on the ones you don't like. I had the chicken liver mousse, rabbit rillette and lamb terrine, cheese names are not familiar so we asked for recommendations they Are all very good. For the main I had Bouillabaisse There's barely and squid in it and A piece of fish, there are a lot of broth but not much flavor to it and I don't know if should drink all of it or what to do with it. There's not much mussel flavor int he broth either despite with a bowl of mussels in it. My spouse had the steak there's barely 5oz of beef, portion is so tiny. And also over cooked. I was excited to try Grisette based on reviews. However there were some negatives. First, being seated next to the door. With outdoor tables seated the door constantly slammed with the waitstaff rushing back and forth. Second, I spent close to 500 for dinner for 4 and while eating dessert we were told to leave as the table was needed for the next seating. Food quality was good, not outstanding for the cost. Atmosphere and being rushed out is why I will not recommend this restaurant . read more

Grisette has been one of those restaurants that has been on my radar for a bit, but I just hadn't found time to actually dine there (mostly due to hours / having a toddler). However I am SO glad that in thinking through where to do our anniversary dinner that we were able to grab a reservation here because I think Grisette is now in my top restaurants of Richmond list.... Ok so what made Grisette so great!? First off, you can tell right away that everyone who works there is like a family and they are so passionate about what they do. We ended up sitting at the main bar and it was such a great vibe with 2 very friendly and extremely talented bartenders - and that's coming from an 8 month preggo lady who was treated so nicely with non alcoholic, custom drinks out of the kindness of their hearts. I mean come on, such a nice touch. The menu is very, very limited and this is one of the main reasons I think I had not prioritized coming here but everything on their menu that we tried was phenomenal and it made so much more sense why they keep things to a shorter list. We got the carrot salad, the steak frites, the fried pork rilette, and then both of the desserts (profiteroles and this special cake they were doing). Everything was spectacular and literally my thought as we finished each dish is when can I come back to eat this again??? All in all, Grisette is a restaurant you should not miss. The duck was served on a bed lentils with mushrooms, topped with chopped apple. The lentils themselves were a bit tough, however, it did not detract from the meal due to the deliciousness of the duck. The cubed apple balanced the saltiness so well; seriously genius. For dessert, I got a cake with ice cream and rosemary caramel. The last piece of the meal was a well rounded and safe dessert option for any one unfamiliar with French dining. My *only* gripe with the dessert was that I wished the cake had been served warmer to melt the ice cream. My waiter was extremely kind, attentive, and personable. The restaurant itself is rather cozy, and I might recommend not brining a first date here as it could be rather loud. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and would love to come back. This was the worst dining experience I've ever had in Richmond. If your a person of color please beware before dining here. My and friend and I came for dinner on a Wednesday night and sat at the bar. At first our bartender/server Dane was pleasant, he read us the specials and we ordered drinks. My friend ordered a glass of red wine and I ordered a cocktail, then we both ordered the Steak Frites for our entree. This is where the issues start, I ordered my steak medium and it came out completely well done, no pink; my friend ordered her's medium rare and it came out medium well. I was so surprised such a highly rated restaurant couldn't cook a steak. We ordered one more drink each and got our check. We split the bill down the middle and left. Once leaving we noticed we were charged for drinks we did not get, so we came back in for a refund. At first Dane refused to acknowledge there was an error, then he finally called the manager Hannah over for a refund. Hannah had a huge attitude with us the entire interaction, which was confusing because we just wanted our bill corrected. After much back and forth we were refunded, and recharged the correct amount. I check my account this morning and they NEVER refunded us for the original charge and we were charged TWICE (almost $300) for a mediocre meal and cocktails. Totally unacceptable. Like stated we were the only people of color in the restaurant including the staff, our food was overcooked and we treated rudely when they made a error and received no apology. I'm not sure where their high rating came from because we certainly did not have a 5-star experience. read more

TOO LOUD!!!!! Could not hear the wait staff or have a conversation. Empty booze boxes were stacked up near our table like we were sitting in a warehouse storage room. Chairs were uncomfortable with no cushions - just metal/wood back and seat. Everyone was yelling in order to be heard at their tables. Air-conditioning was practically non-existent (95 degrees outside - mid 80s inside!); wait staff was smothering by asking questions every 5 minutes while we could hardly hear a word. Brother Rat Donnie has done a great service to Richmond with this restaurant. I didn't even realize he was the man behind the curtain until months later when I read an article about him. Came here on recent trip for a date night at recommendation of family, my first time dining out in Church Hill. Overall my experience was fantastic. The space and ambiance were delightful, especially the high ceilings and tall windows pouring in light. The space felt sophisticated while paying homage to the heritage of the neighborhood architecture. It was a little loud for my taste, so first dates beware... Food wise, everything was delicious. I really enjoyed the DIY smorgasbord which made my spouse happy as well since we could select what we both liked instead of being told what we get. Great job there. For main, of course I had to try the steak frites which were served in very generous portions. Meat was cooked to my liking, though a tad dry on the outside.
