Grinis Grill Restaurant is Dominican food not Spanish. My mother is from Spain and Father is Dominican I have my fair knowledge of the difference. The food at Grinis is delicious! My favorites are Mangu con los tres golpes, Bacalao con guineos y Moro de guandules con Pernil. I Love Pasteles especially during the holiday season but I will not order from them again. The pork filling is shredded and has no flavor along with the masa so pale. Other than that everything else on the menu is worth a try. read more

$6 won't get you much in New York. Harlem is it's own little word of amazingness. Grini's, in such a world, has got to top the list. I ordered rice, red beans, and stewed chicken (on the bone), and I can't even begin to describe the flavors! The staff are friendly, and the prices seriously, cannot be beat. Ever. Anywhere. If you like flavor, you have to eat here. The meat melted off the bone, and the gravy was so perfect. You wouldn't expect a large quantity of food for the price either, but they cram their containers full. They use take-out dishes, so if you're in a hurry you can pack up and go, or if you're staying there, you can plop in a chair at a table and have-at-it. I only ate about half before I realized I wouldn't be able to move soon due to food-coma, so I packed up and went for a walk. I saved the rest for later, scraped the rest of the meats off the bone, and stuck my left-overs in my purse. Dinner was just as delicious (as it was the same thing) and reheated very nicely. Grini's is one of my favorite Uptown eateries. It's Spanish cuisine hits the spot every time. My go to meal is the grilled chicken, yellow rice and black beans - so good! Their plantains are also very good. Kind of on the sweet side, but that's how I like them. The prices are very affordable. I usually get a medium meal (which fills me up perfectlyg) and that comes to around $6. I'm taking away one star because the service isn't that great here. Honestly it kind of sucks. No matter how many people are there, it will always be a long wait. It's probably because they take phone orders as well, but they need to figure out a better system. I went in there yesterday. I ordered up a half chicken, arroz con gandules, and a pork pasteles. The food was good. Seasoned well. You know when people get their food without even tasting it to add accouchements? I almost became that person! I grabbed my fork and tasted it before I added salt to it, and I'll be damned. It didn't need it. My only gripe was, my food was lukewarm. I didn't notice til I got home because everything was wrapped up well, which is good. I would have given it zero stars if that's am option. My experience with this venue is just awful. I found a menu left outside my apartment and decided to try it. It was really hard to get through the phones. When someone finally picked up, they sound annoyed. Maybe they are really busy. I spent ten minutes screaming and got the sense that they are not even listening. So was I surprises to find they messed up my order once it was delivered? How do you mess up a salad? Instead of providing me with oil and vinegar on the side, they gave me two cups of oil. How am I supposed to eat my salad with two cups of cheap oil? When I called back, they were not apologetic. They didn't even care. They were so frustrating that I eventually hang up. I feel like I should demand a refund but I would have to paid to talk to these people again. O. The salad is terrible. It has no taste and they don't believe in giving you dressing except for oil. read more

When I first moved to NYC, I lived right across the street from Grini's. My bedroom window overlooked the front entrance and every delicious smell that came from that place wafted into my open windows. While frantically looking for a job that first month, I was home for a good chunk of time and was definitely on a budge - so Grini's was very much utilized and appreciated. If long lines, and aged greasy food is your thing, then this is definitely the place for you. No matter what time of day or night it is, don't expect to walk out of here in less than 30 minutes. Being that Grinni's is one of the only Dominican food establishments on this side of Harlem, it is very hard to find decent tasting food, and thus, we must settle for crap. Their customer service is terrible, and it takes them at least two tries to get your order right. If you're really hungry, don't even bother trying to get food delivered, because it will take 2 hours plus. They get 2 starts instead of 1 because of their extensive menu options. They make all kinds of wraps, and other items not typically found in a Dominican restaurant. Their "fresh" juices are also pretty good. Other than that, save your time, and patience and walk a little further west to find great Dominican food, and customer service worth your while. read more

Such good chicken and rice here and super cheap. I usually get chicken with rice, plantains and gravy and only $7. Very filling and definitely could be a meal for two people. Ocassionally get the pastelitos which are also pretty good. The first couple times I was here service was very slow and workers had a hard time understanding what I was ordering. Best kept secret in Harlem. Well, not really as it is a popular hang out for the local police officers and bus drivers. Neighborhood people know that this place is where you go when you have $5 burning your pocket and you are starving for some real home cooked food. They have one table mostly Spanish (Dominican?) specialties and the other table usually has roasted chicken, stewed chicken, rice beans and other offerings. It's pretty hit or miss as to the days that they offer skirt steak, pork chops and shrimp but if you see those you'd better get them when you can. Let me tell you, everything I that I have eaten from Grini's has been good. They are friendly and of course the line can get very long in there as is the case with places that serve good food. Most people take out but there are quite a few tables in the place that are usually occupied by the civil service workers in the area. Again, the portions they dish out are generous and the prices are right. If you have a sweet tooth they make wonderful fruit shakes for $2.50 using evaporated milk and real fruit. They also sell cakes and desserts. Try their tres leches cake $3.00. If you are watching your waistline get the grilled chicken salad. The best in the neighborhood. I love this place. The food is very tasty. I love the rotisserie chicken, the grilled shrimp, the grilled chicken salad and the salmon. They will make you almost anything if you can find a way to pass the language barrier since most of the people who work at Grini's speak spanish as there first langue. I would recommend going into the store because if you order for delivery they don't always get the order right and it could take a while for them to come. The food here is amazing! Theres always a line but well worth it. Everything is made when ordered which is a good and bad thing. It can take up to 15 minutes just for your order to be made and thats after standing on line to place your order for about 10 minutes but at least you know it's fresh. What I do is pre order so once I get there my food can already be done. I have lived in the neighborhood 4 years before I tried the place. I LOVE their Cuban sandwich- the roasted pork is amazing! they put it on a huge cuban roll which is basically 2 meals! I work from home so when I am craving one, I walk over and stand in line, $5.00 for a huge delicious sandwich-it's worth it! It was 9:30 and I just got off a flight and I had my suitcase in tow and all I wanted was a good breakfast of salami, eggs, and mangu. I walked inside and said Buenos dias with a smile on my face and I was ignored. There were 3 ladies behind the counter all heavily involved in conversation and whatever task they were engrossed in. So I made eye contact with all 3 ladies, making sure they knew I was ready. I still wasn't acknowledged. About 7 minutes later a Hispanic man came in, said good morning and he was greeted immediately. He said he wanted 2 pans of white rice and she grabbed two pans. I said excuse me and she motioned over to the rice. She started to dish it up and I walked over and said, I guess you didn't see me standing here the whole time huh? Now everyone is looking at me like I'm the bad guy, but I'm furious. Why must I beg for equal service? Why is it foreign that I expect it? I just bought food from this place today an now I am in the Emergency Room for food poisoning 9/26/2013

The reason why I gave it 2 stars is because their food is great some days and not so great some other days. For example, their pineapple cake taste delicious when it's not fall/winter since it hardens because of the cold. I'm not sure why they don't keep it in a warm place but eating a piece of cake that is hard to bite is not a pleasant experience. Another example is when you can really tell that the food is leftovers from the day before. I'm hispanic myself so I do know how hispanic food is supposed to taste like. You can easily tell if the beans and the rice are fresh or not (not being 50% of the time). Their baked chicken is delicious 80% of the time great but that 20% can greatly impact your day. Their "pollo guisado" or chicken stew is just terrible. You can taste all the fat and the uncooked skin. I find that their pastelitos and their salmon are always good. I have experienced better. The big letdown is not knowing when you ordering if the food is going to taste like yesterday garbage or a nice fresh meal. I wish the quality of their food improves since there is not that many hispanic restaurants in harlem. read more
