Just the other day I was craving Peruvian food, today I was walking around in Harlem and looked to my right and that's how I stumbled upon this place. Don't be turned away by the name! Now if you are anything like me, you understand how important it is to enjoy food that is fresh. I rather a plate of food that is extremely fresh over the taste & how well seasoned the food is, thankfully, here I got to enjoy both! I was worried about the fish. To many times have I had fish that was under seasoned. This fish was amazing. It was soft, seasoned well, had a lot of meat and I'm extra happy I didn't swallow (or shall I say choke) on a bone like I am prone to doing lol The fish dish was served with fried plantains and a side of some type of coconut sauce. I didn't think it would pair well together, I didn't really even think that I needed it at all. But, I took the plantain, put some fish on there and poured the coconut sauce over it and boy, I am so happy I had this meal today. It was fresh, well balanced, and light. Fortunately, there were enough plantains to fish ratio, even if it doesn't seem so in the pics. To this point, my partner had the lomo saltado, and he is not a man to ever choose red meat (it's a beef dish) after he was done he was like "wow, isn't it weird that this doesn't feel heavy at all". I took some of his food and can attest to this also! I walked in really really wanting the ceviche, cuz how do you go into a Peruvian establishment and not opt for that lol? There were three things on the menu I was in between and I am satisfied with the dish I had. On the table, there is a little menu that says you get a free dessert for writing a review on Yelp or Google. I didn't tell the owner I would write a review. He saw me taking pictures and I assume he knew exactly what I would be doing when I left. I thought it was a matter of doing the review and getting the dessert perhaps on your next visit, or doing the review before you leave. Which, I did neither. It was nice of him to bring the dessert. It's a passion fruit cream brûlée, which I have never heard of before or had. The passionfruit is prominent, but not sour at all. I had no clue what exactly I was eating beforehand, but knew just on the flavor alone. It was sweet, soft and light. Ohh, honorable mention- the chica morada (between me and you, I might've have two cups) something I NEVER do lol. I'm a sucker for corn, purple corn at that, and anything that is specifically cultural to a place, that you can't just get anywhere. It's refreshing, tasty, and not too sweet. Would recommend this spot! I look forward to going back and trying other dishes on the menu.
Discovered this cute Peruvian restaurant located in Harlem, so came here with a friend for dinner. The space was colorful and comfortable, with a cozy atmosphere. I ordered the Salmon and Shrimp in saffron butter sauce, served with orange rice. This was delicious! The Salmon had a slight crisp to it, and was delightfully tender, as well as flaky. Shrimp was succulent and nicely juicy. The savory sauce was well seasoned with plenty of yummy saffron flavor. Rice was perfectly cooked and tasty as well. For dessert, I wanted to try the Sponge Cake with Lucuma ice cream. This was different than I expected and the ice cream I was served was vanilla. When I inquired about it, I was informed that they did not have Lucuma ice cream. I would have preferred it if they let me know upon ordering, because I would not have gotten it. Service was good. Our waitress was friendly and everything came out in a timely manner. Prices were reasonable overall. I would consider returning to try the Pasta with Steak and Tostones.
I found this place a 20 minute walk from Columbia University because me and my bf wanted chicken. We ordered the whole chicken with rice and salad, and it was really great. Very filling for just $25. The service was great, the waiter was super polite! Ambiance was also very nice!
I've yet to have a bad experience at Harlemite. I especially love the fried fish with plantains and that coconut sauce. Yum. Cocktails are refreshing, outside seating weather is here! Overall service is attentive and usually polite. Great for solo, small groups or even a larger group.
This Peruvian restaurant is known for its seafood, but their meat and rice dishes are equally stellar. This was my first visit to Harlemite, and everything was exquisite -- from making the reservation to the food and the service. Our waiter was very friendly and gave helpful recommendations on what to order. My pollo a la brasa (rotisserie chicken) came with rice or fries and salad, but I requested to substitute the rice/fries with tostones, and they happily accommodated at no extra charge. The meal was affordable and super flavorful -- no one does rotisserie chicken like Peruvians! And that's coming from a non-Peruvian. My friends ordered lomo saltado and shrimp chaufa (fried rice). The lomo saltado was a bit heavy on cumin, but the portion was generous and otherwise well seasoned. I'd definitely come back here. I do wish they were on OpenTable or Resy since I had to message them on Instagram to make the reservation, but fortunately they're responsive. Now to get that free dessert!

On my list of neighborhood go-tos! Can't go wrong with Harlemite. Love having a Peruvian option on the row, and delicious at that. We went during their soft opening a couple of years ago. They were just sort of playing around with the menu, but even then it was good. I don't think any of those menu options survived, unfortunately. Among them were lollipop chicken and I believe a version of mofongo. I don't know what took us this long to return, but I could kick myself for missing out! We suggested it to our friends who were visiting from Columbus OH and we all agreed it was a great choice. Clean plate stickers all around! We had plantains, yucca fries, various chaufa and fried rice and saltado. And it's so cute. Indoors as well as the red tabled back patio. And great friendly patient attentive professional service. Thank you, Harlemite!
The place is clean and the workers are attentive. I got my food to go. I ordered the combo with chicken, salad, rice, and fries. Unfortunately, the flavor was not there. The rice was bland and tasted mostly of sesame oil, and the chicken lacked that Peruvian flavor--sigh. The green sauce had no taste. It just wasn't what I'm used to when I eat Peruvian food. Maybe the flavors have been gentrified because the area is changing--I don't know. In any event, try at your own risk.
Food was some of the best Peruvian food I've had outside of Peru. Absolutely fantastic experience, and the staff are so friendly and create such a fantastic environment.
Delicious food, decent prices, great service. Comfortable covered patio in the back that may be dog friendly.
Love the ceviche here! The fish is super fresh and chicken is super juicy. Service was very attentive and efficient. Laidback and comfortable vibe!

This is a cute, unassuming restaurant. Although it's on a busy street, it was pretty quiet on a Saturday evening. They have three outdoor tables and a bar in the front of the restaurant. The owners are Peruvian. To drink, I had the house red sangria. I loved that you could specify sweet, semi-sweet, or tart. I went for semi-sweet. It was nice and fruity and you could taste the wine. My husband enjoyed the strawberry pineapple wine punch, which had a bold pineapple flavor. They have several vegan entrees. I got the vegan chaufa with tofu. It was full of veggies and the fried rice was rich and well prepared. The tofu was nice and firm. I asked for hot sauce and they provided a red and a green option. The latter had cream in it. Our waitress warned that the red was quite spicy. It did have a kick, but it wasn't crazy and gave the dish the added flavor I was looking for. Their sweet plantains were satisfyingly charred for a crisp bite. Service was fast. read more
Recently tried Harlemite Peruvian Cuisine and had an okay experience. I will say, the customer service here is super friendly, and I didn't feel rushed to leave throughout my meal. Some of the pros included their great happy hour specials, which included $8 drinks. The space itself is pretty small with an outdoor option. The day we came it was pretty warm out and unfortunately the AC wasn't working so this made dining a bit uncomfortable. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. However, homemade fries were a standout for me! Prices seemed fair as well. read more

Made a reservation 815p 4 ppl. July 2nd real hot outside. With my mother arrive at 8:02 with "We have no room, you made the reservation for 4, yeah I was going to cal you" while I now have sweat stains on a gray t shirt. I replied I made and have a confirmed reservation "oh yeah I'm sorry" I finally say I'm all wet and you were going to call me. My mom lagged behind 3 min with my brother. DONT ADVERTISE YOU TAKE RESERVATION AND YOU WONT GET A SHOTTY REVIEW. Change your front of the house. Currently 96 degrees. read more

Stumbled upon Harlemite as me and my friend were walking your usual place and we were seeing so many new places and this one was intriguing if as it was empty, decided to tier a chance on it and was definitely wasn't disappointed. We decided to sit in the open garden area as it was a nice day. We were attended to right away and it was happy hour too so that was a plus! We went with a traditional Pervuian dish as an appetizer and got the salmon dish as our mains. All of it was amazing that I would definitely order this again. We both cleaned our plates and left very happy. The only downside was that hh the time we were ready to leave it was hard to get the attention of a server as it got really busy and there were only two people. They definitely need more hands to help the over whelming amount of consumers they get but other than that great place! read more

We had a lovely meal here. The restaurant was pretty and the ambiance was quiet and relaxed. It was easily accessible by subway. Our server was great and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. The traditional ceviche was flavorful with very fresh fish that was not over "cooked" in the marinade. The salmon dish was as beautiful as it was tasty. The lomo saltado with pasta on the side was delicious. We would definitely go back! read more

The service here is pleasant. Drink wise, the business does not have hard liquor so you have the option of soft drinks, wine, beer or wine based cocktails like spritzes. For food, I ordered the lomo saltado which was decent overall. The French fries were cold and unsalted while the meat/veggies seemed to need a bit more salt. I don't think I'd come out of my way for a meal but I'd consider using it as a spot to meet up for light drinks and a snack etc. read more
