How much would it hurt to let patience know the coverage change? If I need more dental work, it won't be at this office.

I had been dealing with an off and on wisdom tooth pain since before Christmas. It finally returned not going away. After recommendation of coworkers I called up Dr Koterwas office on a Thursday. I was able to secure an appt 4 days later on Tuesday. This was an absolute positive. When I was a child, I had 2 teeth removed at once for braces. It was a traumatic experience as I was not fully numbed and the Dr did not care and continued, with me fully feeling much pain. This left me very anxious for this apt. I arrived at 1:45pm for my 2:00pm apt with my paperwork prefilled out and previously taken X-rays. I was taken back at 2:05 and mouth swabbed. Dr Koterwas came in at 2:10 and went over the procedure. He numbed the wisdom tooth with several needle sticks which were painless. At 2:25 he returned and asked if I felt numb which replied I was. He got right to it and in a min or 2. The culprit wisdom tooth was out! Zero pain! And I immediately felt relief in my mouth in general. I was given instructions and on my way, leaving at 2:35pm. Literally 30 min in and out! I hope not to have any more teeth pulled but should I need to, I will B-Line it to Dr Koterwas!! I highly recommend him.

SO that's a two month wait for an appointment, I planned to pay for braces out of pocket already told them this. I walked in 5 mins early for intake, took 3 mins to fill out. I returned the clipboard waited about 30 mins but while waiting I looked up from my phone and the receptionist was locked in on me, when we made eye contact she rolled her eyes. uhhh...okay. WEIRD When the hygentist (im guessing) came to the door and called my name, she did not speak loudly or clearly - almost in a mumbling tone (the lobby was packed btw) so looking to see that I was most likely next - I asked who? she said your daughter? which sounded like your dog ... no lie. I asked what did you say? and thats when I found out she said your daughter. NOW!. When I got back to the room I waited about 15 MORE mins. no problem. But while waiting the sign on the front door says something to the effect of due to osha only the patient must be in the procedure rooms. MAN I WILL TELL YOU. Some teenagers next to me knew other people in other rooms and they were having full on unprofessional conversations... WHAT? This is what did it for me. Before the doctor came into my room... He was told by someone that he has a new patient in room 5 & I swear to God he said "Ugh... and they couldn't go to Frederick?" 1) I am in hagerstown I live in hagerstown two months ago I made the appointment FOR HAGERSTOWN lol. SO WHAT?! 2) HOW UNPROFESSIONAL. 3) He literally walks in 10 seconds later, How could I NOT hear that? Some lady dressed casually walks in behind him, no introduction.. bossing him around about how much cost will be and what procedures I would have to have done. etc - This is just consultation. As I am paying out of pocket. So the Dentist puts gloves on, I open and bite down so he can guesstimate what procedures would look like. He takes his gloves off. No lie, the lady and he are arguing about how much cost will be. I thought about $3000 They both say $6500, He changed on paper and verbally with excuses, to about $4800... WHAT? Telling me he doesnt use wire retainer. I thought I had options. Was the weirdest experience ever! But thennnnnnn Upon their argument he tries to show this "Casually Dressed Lady" the inside of my mouth WITH HIS PEN! Trying to touch my face without gloves and after biting his pen. Was so UNPROFESSIONAL, DISGUSTING. Every interaction that I had with the staff there SERIOUSLY NEEDS A BUSINESS ETHICS COURSE! I CANNOT BLAME THEM AS THE DEMEANOR OF THE ACTUAL DENTIST IS ILL-MANNERED SO How can I expect any more from anyone else? Seriously. PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE. The office staff is also lovely to deal with and they are in-network with most insurance plans! The only negative thing I will say is that if you have an emergency, they may or may not be able to get you in. Their schedule is just super busy. If you have an emergency, try Potomac Dental Spa, but be prepared to pay out the nose there as they don't take insurance.

The procedures that I would need he told me could take place in his facility and that he could perform all the work that needed to be done. Because of the extensive work needed and given my medical history I opted for a second opinion, and I am THANKFUL I DID! The second opinion dentist I saw said that the procedure I would need and that Gilbert suggested was not a simple one. In fact it was extensive surgery and needed to be conducted by an oral surgeon. He also said, given the work that needed to be done, it would be insane not to put me 'under' which would need to be done in an outpatient surgical facility. And that if the surgery was not properly done and scheduled immediately, my gums could very well become infected (as they had previously which put me in the hospital for a week) and that the infection could easily travel to my brain and become fatal. Taking into consideration all this, and that Dr. Gilbart knew of my medical history, but failed to advise me of about the risks, I can not imagine where I would be if I had taken his recommendations and allowed him to do the work himself. If you need a dentist to perform regular check ups, exams and X-rays, I'd say he would be able to do the job. The only reason I gave him 2 stars was because he had a good bedside manner and seemed to be a real people pleaser. But outside of that, I would get a second opinion or skip his all together!
