I've been here a few times over the years but just like everything is else in the world these doctors think they can just start charging us for things even if we don't want it. I simply needed new lenses bc I took mine with me to the gym and they got messed up. It's literally been 12 1/2 months since my last visit but I was going to make an appointment anyway to see if my eyes had changed any: After I had made the appointment the lady or gentleman said "oh I just want to let you know you have to get an additional test the provider wants you to have and that's $50 on top of your deductible " uhm listen to what you just said. You want me to pay for something THE PROVIDER wants to do. I Bet they do want to charge everyone $50 extra but it should be a choice not a you have to do this bc the provider wants extra money. I just requested my prescription and will order it online. So much for being able to build local relationships bc everyone is so money hungry it's not enough to see someone for what their insurance will cover. You now have to try to squeeze more out for a test that is NOT necessary for a routine eye exam. I will Be moving myself, wife and kids to another company that doesn't force services on you.ppl can barely afford to buy groceries and you want to add some extra stuff is wild. read more

I have been coming here for 6 years now. I have never had a negative experience until today. When I had Dr. Handschumacher, for the first time. He preformed my eye exam quickly after I explained mg symptoms then explained he would be ordering medication to the pharmacy I chose. However, he never took the time to explain what his formal diagnosis was. I understand it is the holidays, but I am paying to be seen here and have for years. I should never feel like I'm begging for his time. Second, I told him I was concerned about not being about to wear contacts in my eyes because my glasses need a higher prescription. He replied "that's why we get our prescriptions filled isn't it" ---- being the "board renowned optometrist" he is and "college educated" you should know that insurance companies typically only cover contacts or glasses not both--his demeanor is off putting, tone death, lacks bedside manner and egotistical. I had no issue with the woman optometrist I was seeing before him here. Please be better. read more

Ordered these glasses and the lens are protruding from the frames. I took them back and they wanted me to pay $60 after already paying $200 for the glasses was told it was the frames I chose and that to get thin lens I needed to pay extra. The optical tech should know this and inform me how it would look. Theses glasses look awful, it make me look like a fool. This is bad business. read more

My experience with Family Eye Care was poor at best. I came for my annual exam as a new patient at the beginning of May. Dr. Handschumacher informed me my astigmatism in one eye got worse as usual and gave me trial contacts for each eye to hold me until my new ones came in. They were the same power for each eye that I had been in for the last year, which I made a point to mention and confirm this was accurate. He said yes. At the front desk, I spoke with the girls submitting my order about having them shipped to the office as I would be out of town on a work trip when they would deliver. They agreed to hold them for me until I returned and I confirmed this once more before I left. Fast forward a week, and I get a notification that the contacts were delivered and a delivery picture of them outside my front door where they were exposed to that day's storms. Upon calling the office, they had no notes saying to deliver them to the office despite my confirming TWICE. They did reorder them. Upon first opening them to use I realized the right eye contacts were incorrect. They were a different power and had all sorts of other writing on the packaging. They were not the same as the trials I was given and did not situate right in my eye whatsoever. They were extremely uncomfortable. I called the office and was told they were correct and they were toric lenses. I mentioned I was never told this is what I'd be put in, I wasn't give an opportunity to try them, and I even confirmed with the Dr. the trials he gave me were correct. I asked to speak with the Dr. and was told he left for the day and may or may not be here next week and it was "up in the air because he would be on vacation so they weren't sure if he'd be coming in". Despite that absurd answer, I called again the next week and lo and behold he was in office but unavailable at the time, so I was told to call back at 1pm. At 1pm I was told by another secretary that Dr. Handschumacher refuses to speak to patients over the phone and you can only correspond with him via email or make an appointment. His response to my email was that the toric lenses are better for astigmatism and even though the curvature and weight are different, most people don't notice and they don't do trials as they are expensive. He gave no explanation as to why this information was never communicated to me to start with. I wore them for a few days and they did not fit my eye correctly and gave me headaches so I requested a change. The Dr. finally listened and ordered me different brands of trials to try and told me to let him know which I prefer. A week ago I informed him of my choice that I wanted ordered. I called yesterday for a tracking update and was told the order was never placed. So, it is now almost two months after my original appointment and I still don't have my correct year's worth of contacts. The unprofessionalism and lack of competency of this office is astounding. read more

Never got notification glasses arrived called in to check weeks later, said they were there so I proceed to get there after the phone call and acknowledgement that I was on the way.. I arrived with a few minutes to spare and before closing, Lights off office closed early. With no regard to the conversation that had just taken place. Go elsewhere, and to an office that takes people's time into consideration. Highly upset because my daughter needs her glasses. Would not recommend. read more

They claim to accept medicaid for glasses but it is a fraud. They collect their cash and your glasses sit in the "medicaid lab" for 3, 4 months (I'm up to 3 and still have not received mine). They have no right claiming to accept medicaid, avoid at all costs if you don't want to be home alone, blind for the rest of your life unable to go outside because you have no up to date prescription. read more

My husband and I have been coming here to see Dr Jeff Handschumacher for many years. The staff always are friendly and so helpful. I couldn't ask for a better group to always take care of our eye health. My husband has diabetes and Dr Jeff Handschmacher is always monitoring his eye health. Buyer Beware I brought in two pair of glasses to show them what I wanted. I did an eye exam so I could update everything and that side was professional. I then showed the employee my two glasses and told her I would give her one and to make everything exactly as I have it in these two. When I received my new glasses I immediately noticed that the lens was falling out of the frame and showed it to them for the shoddy workmanship. I then asked why it was so thick as it didn't look at all like my 2nd pair, that I had not given them. He quickly said it was due to the fact it was plastic. I didn't order some lousy plastic lens. I showed him my original pair and told them they got it wrong. The guy at the counter got mad and didn't care and walked away. I then reached out to the owner to share their error and this is his response. Thank you for sharing your concern. I reviewed your record and plastic lenses are what were ordered. If you would like to upgrade to High index, the Davis Vision co-payment for that is $55.00. If you would like to upgrade your lenses, please contact my optical manager and he will be happy to get it taken care of for you. Jeff Handschumacher OD He just verified that they did it wrong and now wanted me to pay more for their mistakes. That is not what I ordered and he didn't care either. I trusted them to take care of me and they failed. I followed up and was shut down with awful customer service and an owner that doesn't care either. My family and friends will not be back here and I will find a quality optometrist with ethics and staff that is actually trained. Do yourself a favor and do your research then go elsewhere. I now have to pay a new Dr. to fix everything and do it correctly. read more

Absolutely the worst place to be seen for eye exams and glasses. They do not own their responsibility of mistakes on orders. When you question what was ordered and actually completed they ignore it and say to buy some store warranty they push. The lenses are the absolute cheapest lenses I have ever had in my 24 years of owning glasses. I paid for the best upgraded lenses and they are terrible. They scratch with the slightest touch. Save your money and insurance benefits and go somewhere else. A pair of reading glasses from the Dollar Tree will hold up better than these over priced cheap lenses they sell. I imagine they are having us pay for upgrades and never actually ordering the upgrades, pocketing the difference. read more

This is the most unprofessional office I've ever dealt with! I've had the same insurance coverage for decades and never had an issue going anywhere for eye exams. This place refused to take me because i didn't have a "separate" vision policy within my insurance coverage. My vision coverage falls under my medical but they refused to even try to straighten this out. Basically told me to go elsewhere because they weren't authorized to call my insurance company to verify coverage. How did all the other places I've gone I've r the last 26 years check? I think this is just a case of somebody being too lazy to look this up. Glad it happened though because I don't think I'd want to go here anyways. read more

Will never return to Family EyeCare Center again! My husband and I had been previously and thought I could trust Dr. Handschumacher to perform an eye exam for my elderly mother. My mother's only request was to not have her pupils dilated and Dr. Handschumacher violated her rights as a patient to refuse and have time to make an informed decision. He instead forced dilation eye drops into her eyes seconds after she said no and I said the same thing. He then turned to me and said "it's done, and I don't understand why she wouldn't want it. I don''t want to put myself in a position to get sued down the road." I'm in shock at how Dr. Handschumacher continued to then justify himself by saying that as a "care provider he can make decisions for his patients" - keep in mind that this is my mother's first visit with him and she had reservations and fear regarding having her pupils dilated. I've worked in healthcare for many years and a good optometrist and care provider will listen to their patients, provide them with options, and then let them decide. Dr. Handschumacher has no respect for patients and their rights to ask questions and refuse treatment if they wish to do so. His primary concern is to prevent potential ligation for himself in the future. Although the staff was great, I immediately canceled my appointment that was scheduled and my family will not return here again - I'd encourage anyone to avoid Dr. Handschumacher at all costs. read more

There is not enough words I can say about the difference in my life that finding Dr. Handschmacher and his wonderful staff, especially Gavin who heads their front optical department. I have a medical condition of Dysautonomia (a malfunctioning autonomic nervous system). It eventually caused my sight to start failing at only 40 years old. I went to multiple eye specialists who were supposed to be top in their field. None could help me. Then a doctor I was seeing told me about a patient she had who had serious eye issues and could not be helped until he had found Family Eye Care Center in Raleigh. I made an appointment and took the 2- 1/2 hour drive to see Dr. Handschumacher. He was able to properly diagnose my condition of Superior Oblique Palsy where my eyes had gone out of proper alignment with each other causing the constant blurry vision and migraines. I have now been going there for three years, and not only have the staff kept me seeing well, Gavin has gone above and beyond to make sure my glasses have always been exactly perfect for me. If my glasses are not centered exactly right on my pupils, it throws off my vision. When the lenses were made incorrectly from the lab, Gavin made sure to get them reordered and fixed for me and even made the glasses a whole lot better to make sure I got the best vision possible. When the changes Gavin made to the lenses made my vision so much better, I couldn't help but give him a big hug. What a difference it makes to be able to truly see well. And people like Gavin and Dr. Handschumacher are ones who truly care about their patients and want to do everything they can to help you have the best quality life with your sight as possible. I can't recommend them highly enough. People are quick to write bad reviews much more so than they are to write good reviews, and Family Eyecare Center still dominates with 5 star reviews over the bad ones. Take this from someone who traveled a good distance to find them, and I continue to make that trip there every year to keep my eyes seeing well... whether you need your vision checked or you simply need new glasses, this staff will do everything they can to help you. Clarification from my previous post. I took my son to pick up his glasses only. My son did not get an exam nor did he see the Dr. there. The previous review was for the front office/optical department only. At the time I meant to say if I where to get services there such as an exam or purchase glasses and contacts I would have to think about it. I personally did not purchase nor get an exam at this facility. After I posted the original review Dr. Handschumacher reached out to me and extended another opportunity to try his business again. Good selection of high end eyeglasses. Takes insurances which is important. I got my Gucci glasses with transition lens with dark brown color all in all for around $700. The ophthalmologist is easy to schedule and easy to talk to when explaining stuff. They seem to have All the equipment needed. Nice clean space and ambience. Ample parking area and they close as late as 6pm. Good front staff are the best very accommodating and pleasant as well as the technician. They claim they can get your glasses in a week and they call once it comes in. My son had .25 and did not need glasses so it was not recommended. Satisfied with the glasses and services this is my go to place. read more

2 stars for great customer service and we were in and out in no time. I took my 7 year old son there for his first routine exam ever and I was slightly disappointed. I currently work for an ophthalmologist and noticed a lot of things were skipped for a pediatric exam. The doctor found a glasses rx and that about it. There was no retinoscopy, no worth 4 dots for monocular vision, no dilated health exam, did not ask about any family history of glaucoma, strabismus etc. This is a great place if you want a glasses rx and out the door but if your looking for a full health exam for your child, look elsewhere. I literally typed pediatric eye exam in google and this place came up. I think that is false advertisement. Also, my child was spoken to as a adult so he was unsure of what to do. The tech kept giving instructions as if my child as done this a million times and it was LITERALLY HIS FIRST EYE EXAM!!! HE HAS NEVER SEEN THESE MACHINES IN HIS LIFE! So now I have to pay out of pocket to have his eyes re-examined with a full dilated exam elsewhere! I pretty disappointed to say the least. read more

The doctor is wonderful except for how he manages his practice. The optical department leaves a lot to be desired. Most of my time selecting (doesn't take too long, not a lot to choose from) and paying for glasses was wasted with useless chatter. It took well over an hour just because of Chatty Cathy. Just when you think you're finished, you have to wait for the doctor to come by and approve everything. Apparently they can't work independently. Wait again to check out because those people can't put the needs of customers first. Then prepare to be confused because you are directed to read a sign when you try to pay. They actually charge extra to pay with a card. They won't say it out loud. They will only direct you to the sign. It's ridiculous. Why can't the person speak instead of pointing to a sign??? Plus, you're spending well over $500 and they want to charge an additional fee based on how you pay. Get with the times! That's so last century. The prices are not competitive. Shop around, you can do much better with at least the same quality. Then comes their billing practices. I paid the charges they added that the insurance wouldn't cover (yes, think hidden charges) after I received the EOB from my insurance, only to have them call after it was paid and threaten to turn it over to collections because it was over a year old. It was from the previous calendar year, yes. Over a year old? No. It wasn't even two months old when it was paid. I told the collections caller that I was a loyal customer and did not appreciate collection threats and that I would speak to the Doctor if necessary. She insisted he had told her to call and kept arguing with me about how it was over a year old. Um, the year changing does not make something a year old, you actually have to wait twelve months!!! But it was all nonsense because I had already paid the bill. I just didn't want to be called and threatened. She tried to get rid of me by telling me to "have a blessed day." Like, that makes it OK? Bringing God and blessings into it. What does her religion have to do with her right to call and threaten me? You can't just say "have a blessed day" and think that covers up all manner of sins. I'm calling to tell you that you owe money and won't pay it, are basically a thief and a liar but you go ahead and have a blessed day? What does that even mean in this context? Well, shock here, I have no religion! And, I've already paid my bill. You don't have to be a Christian to pay your bills and be able to track the passage of time. All I asked to do was be able to tell the Doctor that I didn't appreciate his collection practices. I didn't get to do that. But I did get to share this ridiculous true story of what happens when you visit Family Eyecare Center. read more

No appointment, fairly busy lobby, yet they were still able to get me in! First of all, I have been working too much to use my vision benefits in two years, so on a whim, having a random day off, I walked in -- Jenelle was so pleasant and accommodating, and she was able to fit me in. I asked her name because she was so nice; yet I should have asked everyone there, as it was efficient and pleasant throughout the office...Dr. Finn was accurate, funny and took the time to thoroughly answer my questions, even with a lot of people waiting. I was even able to order glasses as the gentleman helping me with that balanced his time between me and a couple trying to also decide on frames. Overall, positive experience and I can't wait to get my glasses! There's a guaranteed replacement on the life of the frames, too-- ask about the "Steppers" (I asked if they're called that because people, like me, step on their glasses sometimes?) read more

Beautiful location and friendly staff, but beware and know your coverage before going here. I went to the Raleigh location for a eye exam and contact lens fitting. They wanted to charge me $110 for a contacts lens fitting that clearly stated covered in full. When I also informed them this was covered in full, before preceding on with the exam, I was told under their contact with my insurance provider they are still suppose to charge me $110 for the fitting regardless if it says covered it full. They said different providers have different contracts with the insurance company. I did not proceed with the exam and called my insurance company that informed me that this was not true and my fitting is covered in full at all in network providers and there are no individual contracts. My experience was untrustworthy and unethical. read more

I went to the Rocky Mount location and had my eye exam by Dr. Handschumacher after dealing with several months of vision problems despite seeing a different Optometrist in a different state before I relocated to NC several months before. The staff at Rocky Mount were very professional, personable and polite.The exam was very thorough. Dr. Handshumacher listened to my symptoms and within a short period of time was able to get to the root of the problem; the last prescription from my previous doctor significantly overcorrected my vision. I have been using my new prescription for a week and I can't believe how much my vision has improved. If I remain in North Carolina I would definitely use Dr. Jeffrey Handschumacher again and would recommend him and his office to family and friend. read more

I had a schedule appointment for a contact eye exam. I was 15 minutes late and they told me I had to reschedule instead of attending me. There was no one Inside, all they were doing was shuffling glasses around basically doing nothing but couldn't assist me. Unbelievable. read more

After completing a survey discovered through a WRAL story on meterologist Mike Maze and his experiences/successes at Family Eyecare Center, I promptly received a call that my score on the survey indicated a need for an appointment with Dr. Handschumacher for possible binocular vision dysfunction. Although there was more than a 2-month wait for an appointment, I proceeded and was impressed on my first visit. My conversations with Janel and one other office staffer were positive by phone and in person prior to and during my first appointment. Even though Dr. Handschumacher's evaluation did not result in a diagnosis for binocular vision dysfunction, he wanted me to try different contact lenses from what I was using. I did and found them ineffective; consequently, I called and spoke to Janel before my 2nd appointment, told her the contacts weren't working for me, and explained that I didn't want to come in for a 2nd appointment if they would be charging my specialist copay--I already had an optometrist near my residence and was a satisfied patient of that practice. Janel assured me that there would be no copay charge for follow-up visits for the contacts (acknowledging that I was not being treated for binocular vision dysfunction). She assured me that I would be permitted to come as many times as necessary to get the contacts right and would not have any additional copay charges. Thus, I went to the 2nd appointment; Dr. Handschumacher reiterated that I was not a binocular vision dysfunction patient. He tested other contacts and, in the end, told me to that my contacts I had been using prior to visiting him were the proper prescription. When I went to the counter, I was told my charge for the day would be $85, my specialist copay! Immediately, I told the staff member that Janel told me before I came for the follow-up contacts appt. that there would be no charge. The woman assisting me had me wait to speak to Janel, who came to the counter and informed me that there would be an $85 copay. I reminded her of our previous phone conversation and told her that I definitely would not have come for a 2nd appt. had I been told there would be a charge. Her previously kind demeanor became quickly defensive. She told me--in obvious frustration--that she would take care of it. To no surprise really, over 3 months later, I received a statement dated November 9, 2018, showing a balance due of $85. For starters, I had paid the required $150 to get on their schedule for the binocular vision dysfunction evaluation. I also provided an $85 specialist copay following the first visit. Thus, the $85 I just now paid for the November statement means I paid $320 out of pocket to be told I'm not a binocular vision dysfunction patient. My insurance also has paid this practice. I'm sure Dr. Handschumacher and staff have coded the two visits in a way to meet insurance regulations. While I clearly made a choice to make the initial appointment after the survey results said I may be a candidate for treatment for binocular vision dysfunction, there is an apparent lack of intergrity when it comes to charges for my follow-up visit. It appears that the Mike Maze story and the online survey are being used to get patients into the office for evaluations and subsequent charges. I did not need a new optometrist but trusted Dr. Handschumacher to assist with my treatment based on his binocular vision dysfunction evaluation. My frustration with paying the additional $85 copay is surpassed by my disappointment in the practice's lack of integrity. Beware! read more

The staff are always polite and I've gotten several eye exams over the past two years here. The doctor did identify an eye issue I had and quickly diagnosed and assessed and set me up with a rx for glasses. The glasses sales side left a lot to be desired with the sales person frankly not listening to my requests or desired at all which is why I did. It purchase glasses here.
