Had a positive experience at my exam with the doctor. Picked out a pair of cute glasses. Took almost 2 months to receive my glasses. I had to call about 5 different times to see when they would be ready. Normal wait time is 2-3 weeks. They offered to waive my remaining bill (I had paid about 2/3 of the cost already) which was nice. But then I received a bill from them about a month later. I called to make sure I didn't owe anything and they said I didn't, they just hadn't processed the waived fee yet or something. A few weeks later I get ANOTHER bill from them. At this point I'd given them the benefit of doubt a few times already. They really need to get it together. I will not be going back. read more

I called in the morning and they got me in that afternoon because of a cancellation. When I arrived they told me what my insurance would cover for frames and lenses right away. The doctor was great and answered all my questions. When it came time to pick frames, the staff were helpful and honest about what looked good - definitely didn't pressure me to buy more expensive frames, which I appreciated. Hands down the best eye exam and frames-selecting experience I've ever had. I've had glasses since I was very young, and have a difficult prescription to fill. I had my appointment with Dr. Heinnonen and she took pictures and readings that I'd never had done before at other vision places. She also took time to explain why she was doing it and showing me what she saw on the charts. The eye exam was a great experience. I'm not a candidate for surgery or contacts, so I needed to pick some frames. The staff helped me look through a huge selection of frames, from classic to trendy. I was able to find a great pair of more modern glasses (with magnetic sunglasses - you have no idea how great that is for someone like me who can't wear sunglasses). I have great vision insurance, so I'm not sure how expensive they are compared to other places, but I can say the all-around service was second to none. read more

I've been a patient at CVC for over 25 years. That's taken me through several different sorts of extended wear contacts, all the way to the current excellent variety. Exams have always been thorough, never rushed, and FUN (thanks to the ebullient personality and zippy brain of Dr. Granville Lawrence). I've had several pair of glasses made there, too-- I wear them rarely, but they've all been perfect. One thing I appreciate is that you are encouraged to return as often as it takes (at no further charge) to get the rx right, both in contacts and glasses. Example 1: I got my first pair of progressive lens glasses, and hated them! I felt I could no longer see-- pretty bad result with glasses, obviously. I returned to express my loathing, and the optician on duty took them, seemed merely to breathe over them and perhaps whisper an incantation, and they were magically PERFECT! ( I think it had to do with a micro adjustment of the frames.) Example 2: I tried a new brand of contacts a few years ago-- they were supposed to be the best yet devised. Same rx as my previous brand (which were perfect). I found them more and more aggravating, as I just couldn't see. They kept giving me slightly altered strengths (as samples), and nothing worked. I finally just went back to the previous brand-- again, perfect. Obviously some of the proprietary chemicals in some contacts just don't work with some people's chemistry. That really demonstrates something I've appreciated about Dr. L and DVD: a very generous sample policy. You get a healthy supply to test out before you buy some-- and you can just keep at it as long as it takes to achieve a happy result. Prices are higher in general than the discount optometrists, obviously. However, you have the combination of long experience, attention to detail, and an insistence on successful vision correction that isn't necessarily available at a giant franchise. read more

I've been a patient at Calhoun Vision Center for the past 8 years or so, coming in annually for standard vision testing and contact lens exams. I have always been 100% happy with the service here! Dr. Granville is awesome, as is the rest of the staff--they are always so helpful and friendly. My eyes tend to get really dry and scratchy due to the type of work that I do, so much so that I have difficulty wearing contacts some days (or just look permanently stoned because my eyes are so red), and Dr. Granville was able to find a solution to my problem that cost me no money at all. During my most recent visit, I decided to update my horribly outdated glasses for something that says "sexy librarian." I had my choice in frames narrowed down to 6 options, and Betsy helped me pick the winner. I can't wait to get my new specs, and no longer feel hideous on days when I want to wear my glasses. :) read more

I always get great service at Calhoun Vision. The entire staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and provides little extras like adjusting the frames I'm wearing when I come in. The Doctor provides more than just a thorough exam, he truly connects with patients, listens to needs and concerns, and provides options and alternatives. I always feel like an individual, not just a number in a file, when I visit. Sometimes I order glasses online and sometimes I get my frames here- either way I get caring, prompt service. The actual medical care was just fine. But they don't teach you how to put in contacts they have you watch the video. When I had a problem in the first week inserting my contact they refused to help without charging another $40. I spoke with the manager and she offered to waive the $40 fee but that's not the point. The point is they should provide this service as a follow up. I won't go here again even though I do believe the medical care was just fine. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Lawrence since I was in high school and getting my first pair of soft contact lenses. I just turned 61 and he has been seeing me all of these years. Now the lenses are multi-focal. I have been moving further and further away, but I still keep coming back to CVC. It is like coming home when I come to have my eyes checked. This was my first time here and the experience was less than ideal. The doctor made me pretty uncomfortable during the visit making numerous inappropriate jokes. I would prefer to just have my eyes checked instead of of listen to sexist banter. On top of that when I ordered my contacts, the order was wrong. They ordered a second time and yet again, the wrong prescription. I move in one week and don't have time to send these contacts back again. A total waste of time and money. read more

Am a big fan of this place and have been coming here for my vision needs for over 20 years. Dr. Lawrence is a high energy pro with great chair side manner and spends time getting to understand what it is that you are seeking. In addition to the expected modern technology needed to address vision complaints, I was most impressed by the ethics of the place in that there was no attempt at up-selling me on something I didn't need. No pressure to purchase frames or lenses from them and when I decided to look at buying contacts from an on line distributor to save a lot of money from paying full retail prices, they were more than happy to accommodate verifying my Rx for the on line company instead of giving me the hard sell to buy lenses through them. That type of behavior alone encourages me to spend my money with them on other items such as frames and lenses. Parking is plentiful and the service here is great. Good location that's just West of Uptown, with plenty of parking. Support staff is all great. The two staff Optometrists, Dr. Granville and Dr. Heinnonen, are both extremely competent and explain everything. Their styles are very different, so between the two of them, they probably cater to most people's personalities. They are very knowledgeable about advances in contact lenses if you are not a candidate for Lasix. I haven't purchased glasses there, so can't comment on their selection of frames. read more

I have surely experienced better exams and surely better quality frames and more select that CVC. The only thing I will go in there from again is an adjustment to the frame that are so twisted that the vision is distorted with the lens siting twisted. Their branded for them frames are cheap and this pair does not seem to be stable at the hinges. My eye exam seemed to go okay until the glasses came back. The person helping me may not know enough about optics to know how much bending the lens in curved frames is too much for good quality vision. The frame would not work as the lens was bowed too much. A repeat eye exam came up with another Rx. This new Rx and a pair of their branded frames went back to the lab. Adjusted many times the days they came in, they never felt right. I kept feeling I had developed a crooked head and ears one up a lot from the other. The vision seemed off and I was not going to get them to repeat the exam a third time. I have Lasik with near 20/20 correction but wanted a progressive lens to make desk work and crafting easier on the eyes. I went out to my Lasik provider and paid for another eye exam. this was an extensive exam. what they found was the lens from CVC had prisms in them and they could not figure why that was done. Nor was it neccesary to correct for astigmatism. can you imagine what looking at the world through their RX in the twisted frames was like. I left the glasses in the bag when I got home and they stayed there these 7 months. My best option was to order Spare-Specs with my RX from the Lasik provider, one pair for drives and one for close work and to just take the glasses off when I needed to switch. I am now trying to do tax returns and handle a lot of figures and small print. So, I pulled out this glasses hoping I could use them at my desk to handle the close papers and the far distance of my monitor. I cannot even get the glasses to lie flat and the ear pieces are foreign looking at each other after the last adjustment made at CVC. I will not go back. I'll drive the extra miles back to where I use to go and have a perfect exam result and choice of 10X's the frames as CVC. This is what I get for trying to do business right in my own backyard. read more

I've gone there for many years and have generally been happy with the glasses. And I have a very strong prescription and a progressive lens. However with my most recent pair of glasses, they could not get the prescription right even after sending the lenses back to get remade. They noted that VSP is not reimbursing as much as before and they are forced to use lower quality lens makers. read more

He was an intelligent and "Seasoned" eye professional that not only helped me with my immediate eye issue but he gave me lots and lots of understandable eye knowledge to help me as I live life! I have been a patient of the Calhoun Vision Center for many years and go in yearly for checkups. This year I was informed my previous doctor was no longer practicing there, so I saw Dr. Lawrence instead. I have to say I absolutely LOVE him as my eye doctor, he is very educational, takes the time to see to all a persons needs and concerns. Years ago I also bought my contacts here as well but many times the orders would become mixed up easily. I believe this problem is most likely fixed, but I have started ordering my contacts from another source. This is the only reason I did not give 5 stars. read more

I see other reviewers love this place but I have to say I am not one of them. I was giving them a second chance after a problem 5 years ago with a pair of glasses for my daughter. I would have thought they would have improved but I guess not since I'm on week three of waiting for a pair of glasses now for my son. Apparently they were sent to the wrong lab and had to be shipped to the correct one. With overnight shipping I don't understand how this takes an additional week but that's the story I'm getting. Needless to say they will not be getting my business again. I advise anyone who goes here to ask questions and keep checking in with them on status of your order as they won't call you if there is an issue. read more

I had cancelled by vision insurance earlier in the year due to what I considered too high a price for the benefit. Not to worry, I felt the regular non-insured rate was very fair for a great exam. I had been going here for a couple years. They have an excellent selection of frames. I kept coming back because Jackie was so helpful, however she does not work there anymore. I went in there about a month ago to have my frames adjusted and to schedule my anual exam, and I was not treated well at all. I was told that my frames could not be adjusted any better (even though they have NOT been constantly falling down my nose for the year that I have owned them). The woman who helped me was rude about scheduling my appt. and did not believe me when I told her that I have not had an exam in 2011. I felt like I was totally wasting everyone's time. Well, I wont be doing that again, I canceled my appt. and went back to Look and See, even if I do have to drive further to get there. read more

High cost, wasn't told I was being charged for certain services until they had taken place. Had dry eye that the dr. prescribed a $70 eye drop for and then had me come back for another check up to see how the drops worked (another $70 bucks) just to tell me I can use over the counter drops for dry eye. One of the biggest pains in the ass about moving to a new city? Finding new docs, of course. I'm blind as a bat in daylight (what large E?), so I don't mess around when it comes to getting annual eye exams. It's necessary to make sure my retinas are still healthy and not at risk of detaching. Calhoun Vision has the latest tech for retina mapping (love being able to see for myself the results too!) and Dr. Granville Lawrence is awesomely thorough. His whole office is - from making the appointment to explaining my new insurance to getting my new contacts (in less than a week peeps!). They also have a great selection of glasses and my all time fave brand of disposable contacts (even with samples in my bat-eye 'script. y'all have no idea how rare that is.) And the doc...well, it's like getting an exam by an old friend. There's laughs, chatter, back/forth, and before you know it, the exam is over and you're sad to have to go. But the waiting area is full, and you know you'll be back. So glad this practice is on my new insurance, but I'd return here even if it wasn't. read more

A doctor literally got onto his knees to talk with me and his dad, the other doctor/owner jollily offered me peanuts and is known to tell people when they don't need glasses or an "upgrade." I chose Calhoun Vision because it was close to home and they accepted my insurance. I wish I had made another choice. I have been wearing contacts for 32 years. I hadn't gone to an eye doctor in 2 years because I didn't have insurance. I stocked up on contacts that can be worn for 2 weeks, but I wear them for much longer (until they bother me) because I didn't know when I would have insurance again. When I had my exam, I didn't tell the Dr. this because I was a little embarrassed. She accused me of illegally purchasing them on the internet. She then rushed through my exam. I was sent home with 1 pair of contacts to try. I then went to the lobby and looked at glasses, hoping to find a pair I liked. No one offered any assistance. I went to the counter and asked, and was offered a few prices. I feel like I would have bought a pair if someone had actually offered me assistance. After trying out the contacts, I found them uncomfortable so they gave me a different pair to try. Then they had to order me a pair. That took a while, and I received 1 more pair. I didn't want to keep coming back so I ended up buying 6 months worth of contacts. The thing is, I can't see. My old prescription felt better and my vision was much better also. I can see to drive and watch tv but nothing up close. Now I'm stuck with 6 months of contacts and I can't see. I wish I could just go somewhere else but insurance only covers 1 exam a year. read more

Dr Johnson was insensitive toward my health history. I responded to Dr Johnson's insensitivity and told her she was insensitive and offensive. I had not reported the negative experience I had with Dr. Johnson to the clinic owner and only learned now, a year later, when trying to reschedule an appointment that she reported me as being abusive. I find this to be more of the same insensitive behavior. How can a physician whose patient pointed out that their bedside manner is insensitive and offensive toward the patient's traumatic health history turn around and claim that the patient is abusive. Furthermore, the clinic did not follow-up with me to determine what took place and I only learn of Dr Johnson's accusation's when attempting to make another appointment with a different doctor in the same clinic. There are many eye clinics in Minneapolis - choose another one! Also, if you have a bad experience with a physician - report it, to the clinical director and to their licensing board if you have to. We shouldn't have to tolerate such substandard care. read more
