As a Downtown (pseudo)professional, I have the joy of finding convenient places for errands and such. With a pair of broken glasses, I stopped into Solomon Optical and had them repaired in no time. The staff is incredibly quirky (in a Seinfeld kind of way), endearing, and helpful. They, usually a staff of three, run a somewhat fly by the seat of your pants ship as they dodge piles of papers, glasses orders, various items from the 90s, and promotional materials. How endearing, I thought. So, I made an appointment with their optometrist who's in once a week since I was due for a check up. With the appointment I made, they didn't charge me for fixing my glasses. On a side note: if you buy glasses from them, adjustments are always free of charge. When I arrived for my appointment the following week, I let them know that I was only interested in getting contacts but they sat me down anyway and had me try on about 20 different glasses. I'm glad they did this for the woman who was helping me knew exactly what she liked and didn't like for my face and coloring - so helpful! They really do offer great service that is honest and upfront. The reason I'm giving them three stars is mostly attributed to the chaotic state of things. The optometrist was a very nice woman and completely capable. The exam room, however, was cramped, inefficient, with outdated/uncleaned equipment, and no sink to wash my hands in before sticking my fingers in my eyes. I just don't know if I can get over the actual condition of the Solomon Optical space. read more

I was one of those kids that REALLY REALLY wanted to wear glasses because the frames were cool but did not need them. Well, now I do and I went on a hunt for great service and subtle sexy style. After visiting places on the Uptown strips, Edina Area, value shops and so on, I stumbled into Solomon's with little hope and a lot of need. I purchased my first pair of glasses a few months ago and !wow! are they fabulous! The service was out of this world for Minnesota and the prices varied enough for the budget shoppers. I was fitted for my glasses, chose a case and they were ready to pick up in just a few hours! As a first time optical assistance owner I was taught how to clean and adjust my new sexy helpers from a pro. If you're looking for replacement frames, a new set, or funky casuals stop in here before heading to the other places! They are frank and upfront -ask about prices. read more

Being "blessed" with nearly perfect vision, I've had the privilege to go to the optician annually to get a new pair of frames for the past six years in a row. Needless to say, I'm not new to the game. I've never been more comfortable at a new optometrist before. The staff there, Barbara and her colleague, are incredibly knowledgeable. You sit down, explain your style and what you are looking for and what you are willing to try and they will bring the glasses literally to you. Barbara even gave me a few pairs that were outside of my normal comfort zone but because she handed them to me, I was willing to try. I'm now the proud owner of RED frames (perhaps I will be spunky and post a picture for your review!). Barbara even did a quick maintenance on my existing pair of glasses - tightening the screws, giving them a nice cleaning and even treating them with anti-fog stuff so that they wouldn't get misty in the lovely Minnesota winter weather! I was also in the market for new contact lenses and the ladies were so generous as to give me multiple different kinds to try. They work with you on price and you are in and out in an hour - exam and all. They also have been in business over 60 years, so these folks know their trade... Overall, a GREAT experience! read more

The Optometrist was great! Really down to earth and hardworking type of woman. She appeared tired, but was matter of fact and communicated well, explaining my eye issues and things like that. I feel more comfortable when a professional can explain things to me as they work on me. It makes you feel safer and feel more informed about your own health. The front desk woman was pleasant enough. She wrote the prescription and bill down on old-timey billing parchment paper. The bill for the fitting, eye exam, and contacts were more expensive than other places...so if you're looking to save $$, go elsewhere. Like others have mentioned, the place is a hoarder's dream come true. If you feel uncomfortable or claustrophobic in tiny spaces and large messes, you definitely should avoid this place. Tiny cluttered environments stresses me out and so this is my first time and last time coming to this place for my eye needs. I can't help it, I prefer clean minimalist environments where I can have peace of mind. read more

When I first walked into this business, it was quite chaotic. Some of that is my fault, they were able to fit me in last minute with a same day appointment which is the main reason I am giving them four stars. If it weren't for that fact, I would probably give them 2-3 for the following reasons... 1. It's a hoarder's paradise. Filled with papers and memorabilia, I'm concerned that when my glasses come back from the lab, they will be lost in the shuffle! I can't imagine this place has a very reliable filing system. 2. The staff was not overly friendly/helpful to me. I do have state insurance at the time being so I truly hope that this is not the reason for this. The optometrist was terrific, efficient and super friendly. However the woman who assisted with my paperwork and the gentleman who helped me choose frames (about 4 pairs to choose from) seemed like they were in a bit of a hurry to get me out of there. Over all, I was super pleased with being able to get an appointment the same day I called which was awesome. Other than that, my experience was so so. :) read more

this place is something else. barbara is the best. she is very helpful, knows eyeglass fashion better than the magazines, and will go out of her way to make your experience successful. this is a family owned business and barbara really cares about her patients. if you fall asleep on your glasses, they will adjust them for you...for free, just stop in. want your frames made into sunglasses, they can help. need specialty frames for a photo shoot? they can help. service is fairly quick, rates are reasonable, and they are willing to work with you. just tell barbara what you need and she will make it happen. an example: my partners 13 year old son broke his glasses. we were out of town so i called barbara and asked if we could send the him in without us. she said sure. he rode the bus downtown and went to the appointment by himself. she took care of everything from there. read more

I had been searching for an optometrist for weeks and finally chose Soloman Optical based on reviews. The staff, both opticians and optometrist I saw, was awesome. Extremely friendly and I felt completely relaxed and comfortable while I was there. Yes, the location as mentioned by another reviewer is ... unique. It's a very tight space and a bit outdated. However, I still believe I received excellent eye care and would definitely recommend others to use Solomon for an eye exam. 4 stars because their glasses selection is somewhat limited. Prices seemed pretty reasonable though. read more

I made an appointment here because I work downtown and they could get me in over my lunch hour. Really interesting place! They are kind of behind the times as far as their filing system and credit card payment system goes but don't let that scare you. They have some of the most interesting, funky frames to choose from and a very knowledgeable gal that probably has been working there forever that will help you pick. (See my profile pic) I would've never picked the glasses I ended up with but I have received so many compliments that I am thankful I listened to the professional. My glasses took two weeks to arrive which I think is acceptable. Prices are a bit steep but it totally helps if you have eye insurance...like I did for the first time in 10 years. Now if I need my glasses adjusted I just swing in on my lunch break and it is taken care of right away! Check it out! read more

I came in with a pair of Ray Ban aviators that had lost their pads. I dropped them off, and came in the next day to find that not only have they replaced the pads, they also fit significantly better! They have the coolest glasses in town and the greatest taste when it comes to selecting a pair for you! I am particular when it comes to my glasses. They brought in 3 different colors of my choice pair and helped me choose a dark tortoise. Now my daughter, relatives and good friend have all copied my great looking glasses! The pair of glasses I received from Solomon Optical are OK, but the place is too eccentric for it's own good. The oddness of their operation undermined my confidence. The place is a mess, it looks as if it could stand a thorough cleaning. The store insisted on having their optometrist do an eye exam -- to which I objected. The optometrist did the test and found that the prescription I presented was exactly right so waived any fee -- which was only appropriate. The staff are pleasant and competent (if their style is odd by current business standards). read more

The only good thing about this place was that there were a lot of different frames to try on. However, their frames are marked WAY up and you can find the exact frames for 1/2 if not 1/4 of the price that this place is selling them for. I am a newbie to "glasses" and got my first pair over a year ago and decided it was time for another pair. I went into Solomon because it looked like they had a large selection, which they do. Everything else though - was not so good. My biggest suggestion for people who go here is to get a written quote for how much your entire purchase will be prior to ordering with them. They are extremely unorganized, don't communicate well, and don't give the customer an accurate representation of what the cost will be before the order is in. I was very disappointed with the service these two provided and will not be shopping for new specs with Solomon Optical again. read more

Excellent service. I was a name and face, not a number. I got EXACTLY what I wanted, and I did not at Lens Crafters, Visionworks, or Pearle Vision. They were patient with me with picking out eyeglasses, and my exam was professional and thorough. Talk about a convenient location--downtown and in the skyway. They accepted my insurance too. read more
