One of my customers recommended this place to me after we were commiserating about the cost of garden soil. I have raised beds and wanted to top them off with quality stuff, but the good stuff is like $30 a bag. He recommended GreenCoast and said they have great options. I went a couple of weeks ago and was immediately greeted by the employees who were just finishing up with another customer. I told them what I was looking for and they had great recommendations for raised beds - the Fox Farm Ocean Forest Blend was an amazing deal there! I also asked for a good potting soil for my indoor plants and I got a huge bag at the fraction of the price I was paying to make my own blend. I wasn't going to pay $30+ for a bag of fox farm soil like I did in OC. I did a quick yelp search on where to buy fox farm soil & GreenCoast came up. It's catered to hydroponics but you don't have to be into that style of growing to find this store useful. It's located in a random business park & the entrance is in the back. At first glance it doesn't seem like much but step inside & there's everything you need from netting to cloning gel. A big bag of the Fox Farm soil was $14. Such a steal ! I haven't seen it that low anywhere. I will be coming back here for more when I run out. Friendly service too. read more

8/13/23 Blame it on supply chain issues, they're out of perlite-except for the mega size, too big for my purposes. The staff are attentive & are very knowledgeable about their products because I've inquired about several questions for my plant care. Recommendations are very useful in terms of which types of soil for which plants are being repotted. Their main draw is hypothetically grown plants & they're definitely designed to cater for these growers. Sometimes I wish I set up this system because it does appear to be more sustainable & earth-conscious. If you're serious about your gardening, check this place out! read more

Don't be fooled by their promotion. all lies. I was drawn to the store by a promotional ad from their email and Instagram stating 45% off a certain brand. I wasted a free day driving through la traffic all the way to long beach only to be told they knew nothing of a sale. I showed the employee the email and he still refused to give me the discount. I reached out via email and ig and still nothing. Edit. The ig person I talked to was very nice. I showed my receipt more than a week ago. I followed up and they gave me some bs about list price and the price on the label were different. Even when the attendant said a different number. I bought the items they said were on sale for a price similar to other places without a sale. All in all they bs on their promotions. 45% off should not be the same price I can get on Amazon. read more

Entering the store I was taken by the stock. Many products and well organized. I waited a few minutes as sales folks took care of others. Then Mikey helped me find an insecticide and measuring cups, etc.. We then talked about the stage my plant is in and spoke about root growth and health. Good sales staff, Mikey. And prices are fair. I'll be back. Ok I came back to return a humongous drying tray set. A week ago I came in to ask about drying and if they had a rack or tray? For my four skinny initial outdoor growth. I figured I might harvest a couple ounces in total four if everything clicked. The sales clerk steered me to a 50 dollar hanging tray set. It looked very compact in its nice holding bag. Although the price was higher than I could afford I bought it. Man when I opened it, I was shocked! It had four black net trays in two units. Oh, about three feet in circumference. I need to return this tray set as it is for about half a pound per tray. This is not what I asked for nor is it what I expected when I opened the bag. So today I'm hoping for goodwill and understanding from the folks here at Green Coast. Update! I returned home to find the receipt. Didn't find it . These guys are better than the competition, but not by much. It seems every hydro shop in Long Beach is run by kids who think they are doing the world a favor by being open. Sure this place has excellent products, but the 10 employees they have sitting around never offer to help or even show much of an interest when you do ask. The information they give is usually incorrect, and they automatically assume you are there for illicit reasons. This place would be great if they could get a good manager to keep watch on the employees and make sure they are friendly and helpful. With the Internet, you can order the same supplies they offer for half the price and shipped overnight. People go to a local shop for the service, and this place really needs to step it up. read more

The two stars is for two employees I have interacted with at greencoast that have egos the size of long beach. Multiple times I have gone in needing assistance with a specific product, and I've been told that it's not needed or a good idea, followed by them trying to convince me otherwise, ending with "trust me, I'm a professional grower". Maybe if my crop was failing, or I was just starting out with no experience, those would be comforting words, but it's just annoying when the reality is that I am experienced, and having wonderful success with my system, despite their professional opinions. Before reviewing the Long Beach location of Green Coast Hydroponics, it might be helpful to describe my gardening background to give the reader some insight into how this store may or may not meet my needs. I garden on my apartment's six feet wide, south facing balcony. Due to the size and limited sun exposure, I must be very efficient with my layout and use of the shorter growing season a south facing container garden provides. However, that doesn't prevent me from growing more green beans, peas, pickling cucumbers, chiles, and grape tomatoes than I can eat on my own. I purchase my seeds from online distributers, and my soil, containers, latticing, etc from hardware stores. More important than all the above in optimizing my production is getting a jump on seed starting and growing stong, healthy plants under a grow light prior to transplanting to the balcony. This is where I turn to Green Coast Hydroponics. I really enjoy the open, albeit slightly dark and unorganized, layout of the store. Every product is easy to browse and hold. You can really get a feel for each item, and making side by side comparisons is easy. That's one significant advantage brick and mortar stores have over online retailers. Their inventory is topnotch. To date, I have purchased rock wool cubes, ph downer, an incredible T5 florescent light fixture, nutrients, measuring eqipment, basins, heating pads, and that's barely scratching the surface of what they offer.o I've been fully satisfied with each product and their prices. If you research products before entering the store, and have a solid idea what you want, then Green Coast Hydroponics is wonderful. However, if you're looking for an education... well that's a differnent story because that requires interacting with the employees. The employees aren't mean or rude or snobby, and I've never been made to feel unwelcome. I guess indifferent and unattentive is the best way to describe them. Of course, the level of service really depends on who is working during your visit. One employee was extremely cordial and attentive and helped me select seed starting gear. During another visit, an employee had a lip full of sunflower seeds, periodically spit them into a cup while talking to me, and drank "soda" and ice from a tumbler. So on one hand, you won't need to worry about someone breathing over your shoulder, pressuring to buy something you don't want. On the other hand, no one is going out their way to help you. The Long Beach location of Green Coast Hydroponics is great for an experienced gardener or for someone who does his or her own research. For a noobie, though, I can see it being frustrating. In the end, it really needs to have two ratings. I give 4.5 stars for its inventory and prices, but 1.5 stars for its customer service and staff resulting in a mediocre 3 star average. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE, Shaun & Boots will always give ya great advice and tips and make ya feel welcomed every time you walk in the door, even if there slammed. If they don't carry the exact product your looking for, they'll be more then happy to order it for you and usually have it there within the week. Just plan ahead. If it's a product that you'll be using it a lot, they'll even start carrying it just for you, aren't you special now. AND $10 CO2 tank refills..... FUGETTABATIT (Sapranos is on TV right now, lol) All in all, never once had a bad expierience here, or felt like the employees didn't have a clue what they were talking about, which seems to happen a lot when I walk into other garden shops when I need something in a pinch. Great price, better than the big box store and every possible size you can think of. Even if you have a small yard space they have the simple black no-frills pots for you. They take good care of you too. I have a packet of seeds that didn't come up and Sean (manager) is looking in to that for me. New Grower, and me and my grow partner have been shopping around different hydroponic places. First of all, the fact they carry the whole line of Advanced Nutrients is a huge plus for us, and like many others have said - Loyal Customers get hooked up, and Boots is my go-to guy. My grow partner and I personally did a lot of research before we started our grow room, and we just had a few kinks to work out (Air Conditioning, because ours broke; as well as trimming aids to make our timeline not so delayed.) Boots was very happy to help us and showed us the available things in our budget. They DO NOT JUDGE YOU based on your growing expertise. All levels of growers were there, some guy was loading 100 bags of soil in his range rover (that was a sight to see for a newbie). Some additives can be a bit marked-up and others go out of stock (BigBud) every so often, which is understandable. Gotta be honest tho.... some times they reeeeally try to push certain products if your seeming gullible. Just do your own EXTENSIVE research before purchasing anything, ijs. This place is amazing. Costco of hydroponics comes to mind. They have a giant wall of nutrients with a million brands that i have never even heard of! They have a large sales staff, so there is always someone who is around to talk you through the details of the products. It's nice to be able to walk into a hydroponics shop and not feel weird being the only girl. They have women on their sales staff! My favorite part was when the sales guy (Joe, i think?) handed me an info sheet that gave me all the info i needed to kill off fungus gnats in my garden. Super helpful!
